LESSONSOFA GUILTY BYSTANDERWhen I preach
As a preacher for more than forty years I received a lot
of feedbacks (positive or negative) from parishioners
of different places here and abroad. I appreciate Gods
grace and I learned much through those comments in
different communities. I also pay attention to the
wisdom of St. Caesarius of Arles (470-543) who allowedthe maximum of fifteen minutes of homily to the
people. Its surprising that this Church Father who lived
during turbulent, illiterate pre-medieval period could
suggest a maximum limit of fifteen minute homily.
Living with seminarians of St. Joseph Regional
Seminary for six years, I received their honest scrutiny
on my daily and Sunday homilies. Sometimes points
on my homilies could be disturbing or perhaps
hurting. A priest has something in common with a
medical doctor when he looks at sin as an illness he
can present a specific example for everybody to learn
without embarrassing someone among his listeners.
I never attacked somebody in public especially when I
fully know he is present in the congregation. Its
unethical to peel off somebodys character in public.
Priests have been criticized for their public actuations
during their homilies. Of course, I dont agree with
this priest who just arrived in a highly politicized
parish during his installation with these doublemeaning words: I come here to comfort the afflicted
and to afflict the comfortable.
For us priests, St. John Mary Vianney has to offer
through these comments:
St. John Vianneys sermons covered a broad scope of
Catholic morality and doctrine. His sermons were
written and delivered to ordinary everyday people just
like you and me. He had a way of exposing the many
sins that all people are prone to commit. But he didnt
stop at simply exposing these sins, he further delved
into the excuses and rationalizing that accompany these
common sins.
He helped expose sin for what it is, human weakness.
But he left his congregants in despair over their many
weaknesses. Much to the contrary, he laid before them
a path to holiness by teaching the truths of theCatholic faith and tirelessly explaining the necessity of
its Sacraments.
I am running sometimes with wild thoughts. But I hope
to face them in the spirit of truth. I am learning too
from some wise excerpts.
Evagrius Ponticus (345-399)
A disciple came to Macarius the Elder one day and said:
Macarius, what must I do to save my soul? Macarius
answered: Go and insult the dead. The disciple wentto the cemetery, he insulted the dead, and came back
to Macarius. What did the dead say? asked Macarius.
They said nothing, replied the disciple. Then Macarius
told him to return to the cemetery and bless the dead.
The disciple did so and came back to Macarius. what
did the dead say? asked Macarius. They said
nothing, replied the disciple. Be like the dead, said
Macarius. Judge nobody and learn to keep silent.
Anger is not always and everywhere a vice, however.
It can, suitably expressed and with a suitable object,
serve the spiritual life: When you are tempted do not
fall immediately to prayer. First utter some angry words
against the one who afflicts you. The reason for this is
found in the fact that your soul cannot pray purely when
it is under the influence of various thoughts. By first
speaking out in anger against them you confound and
bring to nothing the devices of the enemy. To be sure
this is the effect of anger even upon more worthy
thoughts. (Father Charles Talar, S.T.D. March 4, 2006;

ST. POPE PIUS X_________________
REV. FR. GERARDO P. ARROYOPAROCHIAL VICAR
Our saint for this week is St. Pope Pius X. He was the
258th Pope of the Holy Roman Catholic Church and
Vicar of Christ.Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, who became Pius X, was
born at Riese, Trieste Province, Italy, on June 2, 1835.
His parents were poor. He was trained for the
priesthood at Padua and became a parish priest in
Venice, where he stayed until 1875, when he became
canon at Treviso Cathedral and superior of
Treviso Seminary. Becoming bishop of Mantua in 1884,
he was made a cardinal by Leo XIII in 1893. Three days
later Leo made him patriarch of Venice. He was elected
pope on Aug. 4, 1903.In his policies Pius X reverted to the main lines of Pius
IX, forgoing the social reforms and political intent
which had characterized Leos pontificate. Pius X set
out to develop the spiritual qualities of priests and
people and to ensure that modern scientific theories
and methodology made no inroads into the faith of his
Church. Here he showed a complete and dogmatic
intransigence. He seized the occasion for action when
a group of Catholic Bible scholars applied the latest
scientific data to the Bible and produced certainconclusions. Pius X took action chiefly in the form of
an encyclical letter, Pascendi, and in a decree,
Lamentabili (both issued in September 1907).
In the letter Pius X attacked what has been called
modernism, condemning 65 propositions which
according to him undermined the traditional dogma
of Christianity. Modernism, in essence, tended to
renounce certain traditional dogmas for the sake of
accommodating certain modern scientific theories.
It represented a modernizing attempt, and hence its
name. The letter of Pius had untold effects on both the
faith of individuals and the intellectual life of the
Church as well as on the whole approach of the Church
to modern man. Many left the Church or were
excommunicated. Research and intellectual inquiry
were stifled for well over 40 years until the reign of
Pius XII.
The attitude of Pius X made the Church unattractive
to many outside it and it cut off Church institutionsfrom any active participation in the intellectual life of
biblical scholars. Pius X imposed the annual renewal
of an oath by all Roman Catholic seminary professors
and academicians that they reject the 65 propositions,
or formulations, of modernism, thus effectively
hampering the inner development of Roman Catholic
philosophy and theology. Pius X backed up this decree
and letter by relegating a whole series of books to the
Index of Forbidden Books and by imposing a rigorous
control over the Pontifical Biblical Commission, so that
all professors and students of Bible matters were
under surveillance and control.
The Catholic hierarchy has greatly increased in
numbers during these first years of the pontificate of
Pius X, in which twenty-eight new dioceses have been
created, mostly in the United States Brazil, and the
Philippine Islands; also one abbey nullius,
16 vicariates Apostolic, and 15 prefectures Apostolic.Pius X instituted a reaction against the Christian
Democrats, the Catholic party in Italy. He objected to
any Catholic in Italy or elsewhere conducting a social
or political life independently of the Church hierarchy.
He condemned popular Catholic parties in Italy and
France, including Charles Maurrass Action Franaise.
In this matter Pius carried Leo XIIIs political
paternalism to an extreme and rejected democratic
ideals. In pursuance of this policy a break with the
French government was inevitable because of thesecularizing philosophy of that government and the law
of 1905 separating Church and state in France.
Tension between Russia and the Vatican grew over
Poland. Pius X had uneasy relations with Germany,
Austria, and the United States for the same reasons.
As a Church reformer, Pius X was more successful.
He reformed the teaching of catechism and the
education and preaching of priests. He promoted

In the stirring times we have lived in, many
parishioners will remember the respect priests were
shown; for example standing when a priest came into
the room, kissing his hands after ordination.
Then it seemed after Vatican II the pendulum swungin the other direction; Do not call me, Father;
wearing lay clothes, being one of the boys; talk of
training seminarians in a secular atmosphere. In an
effort to highlight the role of the laity, some
downplayed the unique role of the priest in our
Catholic Church. So priests were afraid to be different
and for example there was talk of a pastoral council
in a parish being a mere matter of democracy with
the priest having just one vote. We see one sign of
that confusing change in that there are now few
vocations. Who wants to be a priest and make a total
gift of ones life and show absolute dedication to a
life that no one is sure what it is about, if it is just the
same as a layperson?
Of course one missing component is that a similar
process has happened also to lifelong and faithful
marriage. I suggest the same negative reductionistic
attitude is at work in downplaying marriage: It is
just a piece of paper.! So we have seen the huge
increase in de facto relationships. But neither thepriesthood nor marriage are mere human creations.
We did not invent them. They are gifts from God.
No, both are holy grace bearing sacraments which
come from the will of Christ Himself. He is their
author and source. The Church does not invent
marriage or priesthood. Both come designed by
Christ in their inner reality which the Church will
guard. At the end of the world we will have no need
of sacraments. Then we will see the reality. Until
then we only see the human sign or symbol which
contains within it the faith God reality. So strictly
we can only understand what a priest is [and
marriage] if we have faith, and the teaching of
Christs Church to explain what they are. It is a little
like looking at a parcel wrapped up. We can not know
what the parcel contains. Only the person who
wrapped it up knows. Sacraments are faith realities,
not just sociological realities able to be grasped by
human reason alone.

Do you have a dog? What do you feed your dog? Canneddog food? Dry dog food? Do you ever feed him scraps fromthe table? Most veterinarians say that you should not feedyour dog table scraps. Why? They say that table scraps arenot intended for dogs and may not provide what a dog needs. That may be true, but just try to convince your dog of thatas he sits by the table watching you enjoy a juicy steak.Maybe the meal was not intended for him, but that doesnt
keep him from sitting by the table, begging for a little scrap, hoping that just one small bite might fall on the floor forhim. Keep that picture in your mind as you listen to ourBible lesson today.
When Jesus came to earth, he came to preach and teachfirst to the Jews. That does not mean that He didnt lovethe other people of the world, but the first priority in hisministry on earth was to bring Gods chosen ones torepentance.
When other people saw Jesus healing the sick and lame, they followed him wherever he went. One day there was awoman from Canaan who came to Jesus and asked him to
heal her daughter. Jesus explained to the woman that hisfirst mission on earth was to preach to the people of Israel.
The woman refused to give up. She came closer, knelt down, and begged, Please help me, Lord!
Jesus replied, It isnt right to take food away fromchildren and feed it to dogs.
The woman answered Jesus and said, Lord, thats true, buteven dogs get the crumbs that fall from their owners table.
Jesus was so touched by the faith of that woman that hetold her that because of her faith, her daughter would be
healed.
Even though Jesus came first to the Jew, he loved us somuch that he shared his love with all of us. I guess we are alittle bit like the dog even though the meal was notprepared especially for us, it doesnt keep us from enjoyingit. We gladly sit at our Masters feet and thankfully receivewhatever crumbs might fall from the table.

Let us rejoice in the Lord and celebratethis feast in honour of the Virgin Mary,at whose assumption the angels rejoice, giving praise to the Son of God!

Ini ngaselebrasyon isa sa mga importante ngaMaria n celebrations sa kalendaryoliturhiko sang Simbahan. Ginasiling:The Christian belief in Assumption of theBlessed Virgin Mary began in the early
years of Christianity, particularly in thefifth and sixth centuries, but
was formally defined only onNovember 1, 1950, by Pope Pius XII
through the Apostolic ConstitutionMunificentissimus Deus. In theEastern Orthodox Church, the feast wasknown as the Feast of the Dormition, a
word which means the falling asleep. The Apostolic Constitution asserts thatthe Immaculate Mother of God, theever Virgin Mary, having completed thecourse of her earthly life, was assumed
body and soul into heavenly glory.
Subong man Ang Katesismo sangSimbahan nga Katoliko nagapaathag saaton nga ang Asuncion ni Marianagasiling: Catechism 966: Finally the
Immaculate Virgin, preserved free fromall stain of original sin, when the course
of her earthly life was finished, wastaken up body and soul into heavenlyglory , and exalted by the Lord as Queenover all things, so that she might be themore fully conformed to her Son, theLord of lords and conqueror of sin anddeath. [Vatican II LG 59; cf. Pius XII,Munificentissimus Deus (1950): DS3903; cf. Rev 19:16] The Assumption ofthe Blessed Virgin is a singularparticipation in her Sons Resurrection
and a n anticipation of the resurrectionof other Christians:
In giving birth you kept your virg inity;in your Dormition you did not leave the
world, O Mother of God, but were joinedto the source of Life. You conceived theliving God and, by your prayers, willdeliver our souls from death. [ByzantineLiturgy, Troparion, Feast of theDormition, August 15th.
Amo ini ang ginasiling ni Papa BenedictoXVI. The feast of the Assumption is a dayof joy because God has won, Love has
won, and it has won life. Love has shownthat it is stronger than death, that Godpossesses the true strength and that hisstrength is goodness and love. Mary
was taken up body and soul into heaven:There is even room in God for the body.Heaven is no longer a very remotesphere unknown to us. We hav e aMother in heaven. And the Mother ofGod, the Mother of the Son of God, is ourMother. He himself has said so. He madeher our Mother when he said to thedisciple and to all of us: Behold, yourMother! Mary is taken up body andsoul into the glory of heaven, and with
God and in God she is Queen of heavenand earth. Precisely because she is withGod and in God, she is very close to eachone of us. She alway s listens to us, she isalw ays close to us, and being Mother ofthe Son, participates in the power of theSon and in his goodness.
On this feast day, let us thank the Lordfor the gift of the Mother, and let us prayto Mary to help us find the right pathevery day. Today we join Mary in herhappiness. We look forward to the day
when we too can share it with her. Inthe meantime, we ask her to remember
us as w e continue our journey on earthand to intercede for us with her Son that, like her, we may remain faithful to ourcall as faithful disciples. May we knowGods will for us at all times and, likeMary, say our unconditional Yes to
what he wants for us.

reverence for the Eucharist and various
other liturgical reforms. He initiated a
rewriting of the Church Code of Canon
Law, and he modernized the Curia, or
central administration of the Roman
Church.
Maybe one of Piuss greatest
achievements was the improved
condition of Vatican relations with the
Italian state. Pius ceased labeling the state
as a usurper of papal possessions, and by
abstention from polemics he reached a
modus vivendi with the state in which
neither side admitted wrong or accused
the other of doing wrong. A more
realistic view of the facts came to be held
on both sides. The fear of socialism also
seemed to draw liberals and conservativestogether on the political scene, and
gradually Italian Catholics were allowed
to participate in political life. Pius laid
down seven conditions under which a
Catholic might vote for political
candidates. These were summarized in
the so-called Gentilioni Pact of 1913. Pius
Xs moral attitude was again clearly
manifested in his refusal to approve of the
Austrian and German cause at the
outbreak of World War I and in his
denunciation of all recourse to violence
as a means of settling disputes.
Finally, Pius X, died on Aug. 20, 1914 in
the odor of sanctity. He was declared a
saint by Pius XII forty years later after his
death, i.e., in 1954. His feast is celebrated
annually on this day as he had his
heavenly birth. In his honor a seminary
was erected after his name in the City of
Roxas, Archdiocese of Capiz in 1957 both
for minors and major seminarians by the
late Archbishop of Capiz, His Grace
Antonio F. Frondosa, D.D. It was the
seminary from which your humble
servant had obtained his classical and
philosophical studies (A.B. Philosophy-
Classical) in 1987.
