Lent and The Way of the Cross

While I was in Israel last November, one (early)

morning of the itinerary was given over to

walking the Via Dolorosa (way of grief or way

of suffering)the way of the cross. The Via D olorosa is in

the Old C ity of Jerusalem. Old City is entirely enclosed by

stone walls, reminiscent of a huge stone fort. The streets of

the city are all stone and they are narrowm aybe 15 or 20feet across.

I remember as we were walking along the path many

merchants were having goods delivered to them and we

would have to move to the side of the street as these small

tractorsabout the size of a riding lawn mower drove past

pulling wagons filled with various items. The Way itself is

not well marked and the stations are often very small and

insignificant looking little plaques on the side of a building. In

fact, some among our group expressed disappointment that

the Way is not mo re clearly marked and better cared for. And

I think we were all more than a little surprised to find it such a

cramped and small space. I suspect this is a common and

frequent reaction. We quite naturally expect that the sight of

such a monum ental event in the life of our faith, not to

mention for the salvation of the world, to stand out. An d yet it

is quite inconspicuous. If one was not looking for it, one

probably would not even n otice it.

I have been thinking about this as we enter the Lenten season

this year and prepare to do the Stations of the Cross as part of

our Lenten devotion. As I have reflected on the V ia Dolorosa

it has occurred to me that its smallness and seeming

insignificance is itself significant. We Christians often

emphasize Christs humility and the simplicity of his life, and, ironically, we b uild magnificent edifices to his humility and

simplicity. It is refreshing, then, that the V ia Dolorosa is

probably little different than it was on the Good F riday when

Jesus was forced to drag his cross through those narrow stone

    streets.

    P.2

There is also another reason that I find the smallness and seeming insignificance of the V ia

Dolorosa so significant. We often think of Jesus journey down the way of suffering as

something very unique to him. W e see it as a historical event; something that occurred about

2,000 years ago to Jesus the Christ. But wh en we look at the events of Good Friday in this way,

we really rob them of much of their significance. It is important for us to recognize that Jesus

journey along the way of suffering is a human journey. And as a human journey it is a way thatwe must walk at times in our life.

Of course, I dont mean to minimize Jesus suffering by saying this. We will not be

scourged and required to drag the instrument of our own torture and death to the place where we

will finally die. Thats not my point. My point is rather that we will all experience loss, sadness,

grief, suffering and a whole range of negative human experiences as we move through this

world to our own death. On the one hand, we may see these experiences as somehow

monumental because they are occurring to us. On the other hand, we may also see them as

insignificant for the same reason; that is, because they are happening to us. In reality they are

both immensely significant and insignificant too. They are immensely significant because God

cares and understands our suffering, having experienced suffering himself on the Via Doloroso.

They are insignificant because it is part of the universal human experiencewe will all suffer

and struggle from time to time in this life and, as they say, it is not the end of the world. But,isnt it good to know, as we w alk along our personal Via Dolorosa, that Christ has gone there

ahead of us? I think if we can bear in mind Christs suffering as we go through our struggles, it

may give us strength. And I like to believe that Christ was strengthened during his time on the

Via Dolorosa by his awareness that he is accompanying us and we are accompanying him.

May we all experience a holy Lent this year so that we may fully live into the resurrection.

    God Bless!

    Father Tim

    Church School / Nursery

    During the month of March

    the church school will be

    learning about the church

season of Lent as well as

    the Stations of the Cross.

    The Stations will be

    displayed in the hall. Some

of the facts they will beleaning about the Stations

    are:

    Praying the Stations, or

Way of the Cross, helps us

    remember how much Jesus

    loves us.

    The Stations have pictures

    which depict things that

    happened to Jesus on his

    journey to the cross.

A good way to pray the

    Stations is to imagine that

    we are walking with Jesus

    as he carries his cross.
