OUR ROOTS & HISTORY OUR LOCATION
Situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands, the
family-owned Kleine Zalze winery has a
winemaking tradition dating back to 1695.
Historically, winemaking took place on a small
scale, so when Kobus Basson and his family
purchased the property in 1996, he ensured that its
soils were scientifically evaluated and replanted
according to the specific terroir characteristics
and potential. Continuous investment over the
last 15 years has seen the winery evolve into one of
the most awarded in Stellenbosch in recent years.
The small and dedicated wine making team is led
by Chief Winemaker, Johan Joubert who has
developed the wine making philosophy now
synonymous with Kleine Zalze; Clean, fresh
flavours, subtle fruit expression, where restraint
and elegance are preferred.
Relationships are understood and respected as
the most important source of long term success as
the input of all stakeholders is vital in evolving
wine styles to meet different market conditions.
Being family owned and having started from
humble beginnings, Kleine Zalze has remained
true to its core values. They filter through all
aspects of the operations and shape all decisions
pertaining to the way we do business:
Sense of family
Personal involvement, hands-on approach
Integrity and respect
Quality over quantity
Passion and pride for what we do
Rooted in and committed to Stellenbosch
and South Africa

Kleine Zalze
Kleine Zalze is situated just three kilometers
outside of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Located
on a variety of slopes, soils and aspects, the
vineyards that bear the fruit for the Kleine Zalze
range of wines are exposed to fresh ocean
breezes from the coast, which lies a mere 15
kilometers away. This cool climate yields
delicate flavours whilst at the same time
providing optimal growing and ripening
conditions to our fruit.
We also work with a number of selected growers
in the surrounding areas who adhere to our
exacting standards of vineyard management.
Kleine Zalze consciously addresses the fact that it
does not operate in isolation. The insight that success
is a function of responsible handling of all resources
filters through our entire business. Since its inception
in 1996, Kleine Zalze has grown from 7 to more than
100 permanent employees across the three entities
(wines, restaurant and lodge).
From a human resource perspective, Kleine Zalze
supports staff from previously disadvantaged
backgrounds by paying the school fees of their
children. The company furthermore assists with the
provision of housing and transport. Strong focus is
placed on training of junior staff, where their
potential and areas of interest is evaluated and
identified, so that they can attend applicable courses.
A conscious decision was also made against the
introduction of mechanical harvesting equipment
and the moving of bottling operations overseas to
avoid the loss of jobs at Kleine Zalze.
From an environmental perspective, the development
of Kleine Zalze and the adjoining De Zalze Golf
Estate were subject to the condition that the value of
land would have to be enhanced. This condition was
turned into reality through Kleine Zalze’s
undertaking of turning previously undeveloped soils
into productive agricultural land. Intensive soil
preparation preceded the planting of new vineyards,
which today yield high quality inputs into Kleine
Zalze’s wines.
Also as part of the development, a “green trust” was formed in conjunction with De Zalze Golf Estate, which
involves environmental programmes on the two properties. Kleine Zalze complies to the internationally
recognised Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme. The scheme certifies that our grapes and wine are
produced according to environmentally sustainable production methods. Compliance with the IPW guidelines
assures the buyer and consumer that the production process was environmentally sustainable and that the
minimum food safety requirements have been met. Kleine Zalze also actively supports local charities and
organisations that are involved in community upliftment.
In this manner, staff is employed and uplifted and the
important role that education plays in community
development is addressed.

TERROIR RESTAURANT
The award-winning Terroir Restaurant: Relaxed fine dining in the shade of old oak trees...
Over time, Kleine Zalze has achieved a synergistic
integration of wine related lifestyle offerings -
Terroir Restaurant, Kleine Zalze Lodge and De
Zalze Golf Course, which add to the appeal and
richness of the Kleine Zalze brand.
Terroir opened in October 2004, and over the years
has become one of the most sought-after gourmet
destinations in the Cape Winelands, placing
Stellenbosch prominently on the culinary map. The
restaurant is located on Kleine Zalze, set under
historic oak trees with views over the De Zalze golf
course and surrounding gardens and vineyards. The
atmosphere is both refined and relaxed.
It is the perfect environment in which to enjoy a fine
meal matched to excellent wines. The unpretentious
ambience and dressed-down décor belie multi
award-winning chef Michael Broughton’s
rigorously disciplined approach to food.
Classic pairings and intense depth of flavour
characterize the chalkboard menu of deceptively
simple dishes influenced by what’s in season and,
where possible, the use of locally grown fresh
produce. Care and emphasis is placed on matching
the food to specific wines produced at Kleine Zalze,
in the Stellenbosch region and further afield.
Over the years, Terroir has earned a string of
prestigious awards, including the Eat Out
Restaurant of the Year in 2006, Eat Out Customer
Service Excellence Award in 2006 and 2008, Eat
Out Top 10 Restaurant in 2005, ‘06, ‘08, ‘09, ‘10
Dine Magazine Top 10 Restaurant 2005,06,07, 08,
and SA Wine Tourism Restaurant of the Year 2006.

ZALZE : A FRESH LOOK
Zalze’s introduction to the UK and Europe
demonstrated the benefits of using Kleine Zalze’s
wine making philosophy and techniques to
create a more contemporary and retail focused
brand. The success of this brand in a short period
of time is testament to the engagement of a new
South African wine drinking audience – an
audience that is willing to experiment, but which
demands a solid track record.
The Zalze range continues Kleine Zalze’s
tradition of making wines of outstanding quality
with the aim to capture the uniqueness of the
respective varieties and the soils on which they
were grown. Cut from the same cloth, the Zalze
label was to communicate its inherent integrity
and quality, as well as the earthiness that is so
strongly associated with its origins in the heart of
the Stellenbosch Winelands. www.zalze.co.za
The Foot of Africa brand was specifically
developed to access the international
commercial off-trade market without
affecting the brand building efforts that
had been undertaken for the core Kleine
Zalze brand. Sweden was identified as
one of the first markets in which the brand
was to be launched in 2004.
As with the Kleine Zalze brand, past
efforts started paying off in 2007. The
following list illustrates the brand’s
success in Sweden achieved during the
year
• Foot of Africa Chenin Blanc: Top
selling South African white wine (in
bottle and BiB)
• Foot of Africa Shiraz/Viognier: Top
selling South African red wine (in
bottle)
• Foot of Africa Chenin Blanc: Top
selling white wine overall:
Further recognition followed in April
2008, when Sweden’s biggest wine and
food magazine “Allt om Mat” awarded
Foot of Africa Chenin Blanc (BiB) with:
• Best white BiB of all wines in Sweden
• Most outstanding value for money
from South Africa
In the 2011 Vinordic Wine Challenge the
Foot of Africa Chenin Blanc 2010 was
awarded:
• Best overall value for white BiB wine
2011
