Each and every winery has a story to share and as we all know that each and every type of wine has an excellent history. The story of North Carolina’s wineries begins soon after Sir Walter Raleigh reached this place.

It is the place where the grapevine was introduced for the first time and then people started cultivating the vineyards.

North Carolina became famous for its production of top quality wine from the beginning of 20th century. In fact, it had become the leader in the American wine industry. But soon after North Carolina started to make its mark in the industry, Congress passed an act in 1919 which prohibited the wine production.

This change in the legislation forced the local producers to adopt nontraditional ways of wine production and obviously they were not up to the mark.

North Carolina’s soil is rich in the minerals and nutrients necessary for the cultivation of vineyards. The primary reason behind the success of the wine industry in this area is that people living here were mostly farmers and they had a good knowledge about the cultivation of a healthy crop.

Like the variety of grapes, people living here are also diverse in their nature. They welcome each and every opportunity and this is what has made them successful because they never stepped back even after the sudden prohibition forced by the change in the law back in 1919.

Perhaps the most attractive type of grapes in North Carolina is the Mother Wine first sighted back in 1584 by the companions of Sir Walter Raleigh. This wine has one of the thickest truck which measures up to two feet.

This Mother Wine remained hidden as most of the wineries stopped cultivating it. But in the year 2008, Duplin Winery started to grow the native Mother Vine and made the history by producing white table wine made of Mother Vine for the first time after more than 100 years.

After this, the Mother Vine again started to remain in the headlines. The quality and taste of this product has inspired some other wineries as well. Its demand has been increasing day by day and people are again found busy in research studies regarding the wine produced from the Mother Vine.
