Wine Tasting Notes

The Deck Sydney

Champagne

2008 Pol Roger, Brüt Eperany, France 199

A great vintage from one of the finest Champagne houses that delivers great concentration with subtle complexity and superior precision. A Winston Churchill favourite.

NV Laurent-Perrier, La Cuvee Tours-sur-Marne, France 99

Fresh, pure and elegant; significantly driven by an unusually high proportion of Chardonnay, the new La Cuvee is made from more than a hundred different Crus. It represents exceptional value at this price.

NV Canard Duchene, Cuvee Leonie Green Reims, France 145

With apple and a surprisingly large helping of lifted red fruit, combined with biscuits and dried fruit this wine is rich and complex in part due to a high level of reserve wines used (25%)

2009 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils, Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru Cuis, France 140

Boasting at least 80% from grand cru Cote des Blancs, this delicious Champagne punches well above its weight. Playing in the apples and pears spectrum with a healthy dose of citrus and a touch of lemon curd. Yum!

NV Canard-Duchêne "Authentic", Rosé Reims, France 115

Strawberries and cream with some red currants thrown in, held together with a wonderful minerality - suits any time of day!

2006 Philippe Starck + Louis Roederer, Champagne Brüt Natural Reims, France 199

Possibly the most interesting and attractive Champagne I have ever tasted. Released on only exceptional years when there have been optimal ripening conditions the approach is to simply showcase the terroir of this single vineyard Champagne grown on clay and stone. Through zero dosage, organic and biodynamic practices, harvesting the entire production in one day and co-fermenting the Pinot and Chardonnay using natural fermentation techniques in 100% oak; utilising no malolactic or racking; this "simple” approach has produced a wine of immense complexity and finesse. Treat yourself there's not much available!

Sparkling

2017 Usher Tinkler "La Volpe", Prosecco Hunter Valley, NSW 56 From 100% Glera grafted onto old Hunter Semillon vines this Prosecco shows the minerality and restraint we love

in Italian examples whilst bursting with apple and nashi pear and an almost marzipan flourish.

NV Redbank Emily, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Brüt Cuvee South Australia 34 Relatively simple with clean minerality this is a lovely aperitif

NV Marco Polo, Prosecco Brut DOC Veneto, Italy 55 Dry but textural - a good example of this style of sparkling wine.

NV Langlois Creamant, Brüt by Bollinger Loire Valley, France 65 Crafted from Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc this sparkling owned by the house

of Bolly is "ab fab". Great with nibble bits darling!

NV Marc Bredif, Brut Loire Valley, France 59 This sparkling Vouvray is at once pretty and delicate yet with a great backbone - great

with or without food.

2011 Yarrabank, Cuvee Yarra Valley, Victoria 69 This racy sparkling is the product of a partnership with Champagne Devaux and is a benchmark

for Australian Champenoise.

2011 Moorilla Muse, Extra Brut Rose Derwent Valley, Tasmania 85 Rich and powerful and with great depth yet still very elegant.

2010 Jansz Single Vineyard, Chardonnay Pipers River, Tasmania 85 Preserved lemon, truffles and oyster shells along with confectionery notes of nougat and biscuits.

From one of Australia's great sparkling regions.

Riesling

2016 Helm Classic Murrumbateman, ACT 67 More tightly wound than Anthony Mundine! If you want line and precision this is it.

2005 Jim Barry “ The Florita” Clare Valley, South Australia 110 One of Australia's truly great white wines and one of the best vintages.

Aussie Riesling doesn't get better than this.

2017 Grosset Polish Hill, South Australia 89 One of Australia's greatest producers, this wine is intense with luscious lime and floral characters

in a steely structure.

2015 Prinz Von Hessen “H” Line Johannisberger, Rheingau, Germany 59 Typical Rheingau Riesling, medium weight with refreshing notes of apples, stone fruit and

citrus, with the benefit of some time on lees.

2010 Peregrine Central Otago, New Zealand 63 What New Zealand Riesling? Well actually there are a few very good ones and this is

looking just great with quite a few years bottle age but still fresh and taut. An off dry style with stone fruit and orange blossom aromas. This will easily stand up to spicy food.

2016 Dandelion Vineyards, Enchanted Garden of Eden Eden Valley, South Australia 52

Eden Valley is one of if not "the" greatest Australian region for Riesling and this is a very good example of why. Approachable enough to be enjoyed without food.

2010 Domaines Schlumberger, Grand Cru Saering Alsace, France 88

This is Riesling at the top of its game from its Alsatian home. Still a youth though a 2010.

Pinot Gris/Grigio/Blanc

2016 Bellvale ‘Estate’, Pinot Grigio Gipsland, Victoria 49 “It’s a cracking grigio. Weighty and flavoursome but flushed with refreshing acidity. ….

Lime, nashi pear, crunchy apples and dry, chalky spice. Lovely dry finish too.” - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)……….I'll second that!

2016 Cantina Riff Progetto Lageder, Pinot Grigio delle Venezie Alto Adige, Italy 50 Crafted by renowned fourth generation winemaker Alois Lagedar, this lively Italian pinot grigio has minerality

and structure that reflect the Dolomite fossils and limestone that the vines grow on; hence the name "Riff" which is German for reef.

2016 Cave de Beblenheim, Reserve Pinot Blanc Alsace, France 59 Dry yet full bodied with orchard and stone fruits - more interesting than the "easy drinking"

label this variety wears.

2016 Swinging Bridge, Pinot Gris Orange, New South Wales 46 Great texture, notably creamy nuttiness adds a lot of interest to

this cool climate Pinot Gris.

2015 Marco Felluga, Pinot Grigio Friuli, Italy 68

Semillon

2017 Margan Hunter Valley, NSW 48 Lime and lemongrass within a slightly fuller bodied and softer package than many

other Hunter Semillons.

2009 Brokenwood Latara Hunter Valley, NSW 85 This is a wonderful expression of aged Hunter Semillon, still bright and youthful but

developing toasty honey characters over cut hay, citrus rind, almonds, apple tart and dried fruits. If you've never tried one you should.

2014 Fermoy Estate Margaret River, Western Australia 55

A very different beast from the Semillons of the Hunter Valley but top notch in its own right. This Semillon freely expresses a lot more complexity in its youth than typical Hunter examples which may not display their full potential for a decade or two. Elevage includes barrel fermentation and extended time on lees; and the resulting wine is a luscious cascade of zesty lemon curd, salty preserved lemon, straw and honeysuckle; with plenty of weight and texture.

Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc

2015 Hayshed Hill Block 1 Margaret River, Western Australia 58 Think Aussie Sem /Sav think Margaret River! This is a great example-Block 1 consists of

some of the oldest Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes in Margaret River. Classic lemon and cut grass on the nose and a well textured palate of gooseberry and fresh lychee.

2014 Chateau Turcaud Entre Deux Mers, France 65 Then there's the French version. The aromatic complexity on the nose follows through on

the palate with extreme finesse. Do ya want to, ya want to get funky? If you're not going to Sancere this might be the one.

with intelligent use of oak. Posture that befits its class!

2015 Domaine William Fevre Montmaines, 1er Cru Chablis, France 100 With more minerals than Gina Reinhart, attributable to the limestone and oyster shell it grew in, this is

everything you're looking for in Chablis-a perfect combination of concentrated fruit, perfectly integrated and restrained spicy oak, and of course the salty minerality. Scrumptious.

and roasted nut characters, with a powerful intense textural palate and a mineral precision.

2015 Vasse Felix, Heytesbury Margaret River, Western Australia 115 One of two high end Margy Chardies on the list - which are quite different. The Heytesbury

is 100% wild yeast fermented and matured in new oak for just 9 months. Powerful and intense it displays matchstick, citrus, white peach and grapefruit alongside a subtle toasty, nutty aspect from the sublime oak regime. There's a steely, tight thread of fine grained oak and beautifully-weighted fruit supported with a lancing acidity.

2013 Neudorf Moutere Nelson, New Zealand 110 Complex and Classy (no NZ jokes please) "When grapes are turned into wine by winemakers as

talented as Tim Finn, the results can be spectacular. His Moutere Chardonnay would fool many into thinking it was a fine, white Burgundy (it is priced as one, deservedly)." Jancis Robinson MW.

2016 Nova Vita Firebird Adelaide Hills, South Australia 49 The Adelaide Hills puts out some great cool climate Chardonnays. This has aromas of lemon zest,

Pinot Noir and Gamay - continued

2015 Tornatore, Mount Etna Rosso DOC Castiglione di Sicilia, Italy 78 This wine has nothing to do with Burgundy or Pinot or Gamay yet I have every confidence listing it in

this section. If you're after a Burgundian type complexity and structure you will not be disappointed. Made from 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappucio ( neither of which I expect most people have heard of) and grown on the imposing slopes of Mt Etna's volcanic soil; the complexity and structure ifs just fabulous, carved out by the crisp nights at that altitude, and sea breases compensating for the intense heat of the day. Try it you will love it.

2016 BK Carbonic Maceration, Unfiltered Lenswood, South Australia 54

Tempranillo and Blend

2012 Celeste Crianza, Tempranillo Ribera del Duero, Spain 69

Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero tends to achieve higher fruit ripeness than those of Rioja, due to the high altitude leading to very cool nights in contrast to the extreme heat of the day. This luscious example has the typically forward rich, dark fruit on the palate and more ripe tannin structure than the usually dusty, savoury Rioja. However plenty of spice, leather, tar and earthiness add complexity and leave you in no doubt it may be fruit driven but it's old world!

2014 Torres Altos Ibericos, Crianza Rioja, Tempranillo Rioja, Spain 49

100% Tempranillo from its motherland Rioja; fine juicy tannins, earthy fruit and floral notes. Lovely with salsa!

2015 Juniper Estate, Tempranillo Margaret River, Western Australia 55

This is a seriously good crack at producing an Aussie Tempranillo true to its origins, yet with a swag of Margaret River drive in the fruit to balance the firm tannins, spice, musk, bay leaf and dark chocolate. Take that to "la rumba".

2013 Casa Rojo Alexander vs Ham Factory Tinto Fino DOP Tempranillo

Ribera del Duero 75

Another hit from the "Red House', these guys are meticulous about the way they go about their wines. Selected from the best vineyards of Aranda de Duero the resulting wine is richly intense, with black fruits melded with cocoa, mocha and tobacco.

Field Blends

2014 Domaine Simha, Rouge Field Blend, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Riesling

Derwent Valley, Tasmania 75

Anyone who can say their wine has nuances of bird song is all right with me - I think they might be right! "Produced from cool climate origin varietals of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Chardonnay and Riesling. In-keeping with our natural philosophy, the grapes were picked on a flower day. The blend underwent a whole bunch wild ferment with traditional pigeage and was bottled unfined and unfiltered with natural balance. An extremely bright and fresh style; Meadows of wildflower parfum, damson plum, bird song, cherry, thyme and pink peppercorn spice give this wine great perfume and presence."

2014 Ridge Vineyards, 'Geyserville' Field Blend, Zinfandel, Carignan, Peti Syrah, Mourvèdre

Santa Cruz, California, USA 150

Jancis Robinson chose both Geyserville and sister property Monte Bello as examples of great vineyards - both unusual in that they are American and in the case of Geyserville that it grows Zinfandel. Their field blend of roughly 60% Zinfandel, 24% Carignane, 12% Petite Sirah, 4% Mataro is a stunning racy well-structured and distinctive wine , partly it's thought because of the proportion of old vine Carignan. They have just made their 50th vintage.

2015 Margan Estate Breaking Ground, Tempranillo, Graciano,

Shiraz, Field Blend

Hunter Valley, NSW 65

Brooding dark forest fruit reflecting the Tempranillo and Shiraz grown on the deep red volcanic earth of Fordwich is given extra lift and line by the Graciano. Further complexity comes in the form of red meat, struck match and spices; with some pretty floral hints on the nose. Picked and fermented togerther as a field blend it's great to see new varieties played with in the Hunter.

2011 Cascina Fontana, Barolo, DOCG Piedmont, Italy 60 Hugely rich yet austere.............sounds like an old boss of mine but this wine has a lot more

2012 Guigal Cote du Rhone Rouge Rhone Valley, France 54 Shiraz and Grenache in almost equal parts with a touch of Mourvedre, this is a benchmark Rhone which should frankly cost

more.

2014 Nuraghe Crabioni "Cannonau (Grenache) di Sardegna",DOC Sardegna, Italy 64 Nuraghe is named after the Bronze and Iron age Sardinian stone structures, one of which is found on the property! One can only

imagine how long wine has been in the area. The Cannonau (local dialect name for Grenache) is grown just 200 metres from the sea. This Grenache is a more full bodied style; warm and intense with very apparent ripe plum and cherries yet underlying is a bed of dried herbs and a touch of anise. Best with food and can be paired with a wide variety including some fish like Spanish mackerel.

Cabernet Blends

2015 West Cape Howe, Hannah's Hill, Cabernet Malbec Frankland River, Western Australia 45 Beautifully textured with intense berry fruit characters and great length this is distinctly

Frankland River.

2012 Yalumba, “Signature”, Cabernet Shiraz Barossa Valley, South Australia 95 Australia's quintessential blend and this one of the best examples with the added benefit of sometime in bottle. It gets the name

signature because they're proud to put their name on it and so they should be. Each year they honour the contribution made by one of their team with the bottles bearing their signature. 2010 befittingly bears the bosses' name; Robert Hill-Smith. Rich and opulent with captivating aroma of black fruits and aniseed.

2015 Rusden Ripper Creek, Shiraz Cabernet Barossa Valley, South Australia 59 This blend cannot be found in the old world due to appellation laws; but has proven highly successful in Australia! Blended

together after open fermentation, basket pressing and ageing in old casks, as has been the tradition - a little "ripper". Juicy dark fruits with hints of liquorice, cocao and vanilla. You beaut'!

2006 Moorilla Muse Series, Cabernet Merlot Derwent Valley, Tasmania 89 A rich and vibrant nose with fresh berry, leather, spice, hints of black pepper and herbs-

this wine will be displaying some wonderful bottle age characteristics.

2011 Flametree Jeremy John, Cabernet Malbec Margaret River, Western Australia 120 If you release a wine in honour of a loved one it better be good- this one's great.

Classic Cabernet aromas of cassis, black current and dark chocolate are fleshed out with the plum and cherry fruit flavours of the Malbec. Delicious!

Cabernet Sauvignon

2015 West Cape Howe, Hannah's Hill, Cabernet Malbec Frankland River, Western Australia 45 Beautifully textured with intense berry fruit characters and great length this is distinctly

Frankland River.

2011 Helm Murrumbateman, ACT 49 There had to be something for me to like about Canberra and this is it. Ken makes seriously

good cool climate (it is Canberra) wine. They would be happy with this Cabernet in Bordeaux.

2009 Geoff Merrill Reserve Coonawarra, South Australia 72 One of the real characters of the Australian wine scene, you have to love the fact that he cares

enough to release 9 year old wines! After that long it has developed complex aromas of dark berries and dried herbs and the palate displays blackcurrants and bitter chocolate. Produced with as little intervention as possible, which is a good job as he's too busy watching cricket!

2014 Yalumba “The Cigar” Coonawarra, South Australia 58 From the oldest family owned winery in Australia the "Cigar" has always punched above its weight but to my mind the current

vintage is the best yet. Lifted violet and blackcurrant aromas with a touch of tobacco, and a driving palate of blackberry and mulberry. Not a vegetative note in sight

2014 Majella Coonawarra, South Australia 67 An exceptionally long ripening season has helped deliver a wine of great complexity, length

and power with cherry and blackberry fruits and dark chocolate mint on the nose; plum, blackberries and cassis flavour fill the palate.

2014 Grace Farm Margaret River, Western Australia 59 A classic Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon with intensity and finesse. It exhibits a rich

concentration of cassis and blueberry supported by elegant tannins and complexity. It keeps getting accolades!

2014 Wirra Wirra, The Angelus Mclaren Vale, South Australia 96 An exemplary Mclaren Vale Cabernet pungent and concentrated with notes of cassis, cedar, tomato

and trademark bitter chocolate.

Entre-Deux-Mers, Bordeaux, France 54 2014 Chateau Gantonnet Bordeaux Rouge This is great value Bordeaux, savory and intense with anise and herbal complexity

Cabernet Sauvignon - continued

2010 Forest Hill Block 5 Mt Barker, Western Australia 99 From the oldest Cabernet vines in WA this wine exudes dark berries, tobacco leaf and

subtle earthy notes from the bouquet. The palate is equally complex with dark fruit and chocolate and a dense structure. Serious Cabernet

2014 Hickinbotham Clarendon Estate, “Trueman” McLaren Vale, South Australia 110 Elegant and pretty but powerful and persistent this is top notch Cabernet, one of Australia’s greatest.

Shiraz

2016 Teusner, “The Independent”, Shiraz, Mataro Barossa Valley, South Australia 49 A cracking wine from Kym Teusner, with the Mataro adding some lovely fleshy savouriness

to the blend, loads of leather and spice and all things nice.

2009 Galli Estate, " Lorenzo" Shiraz Heathcote, Victoria 75 Blackberries and violets on the nose with layers of intense dark berry fruit, earthiness and spice

on the palate bound together with good structure. Great Heathcote Shiraz.

2013 Flametree Frankland River, Western Australia 58 This is a fabulous wine, great weight of cherry spice and liquorice fruit but supported by a

really savoury Frankland River undertone.

2005 Teusner Albert Barossa Valley, South Australia 89 This is a big wine! Extremely powerful yet complex with pretty fragrant notes. This would accompany a nice juicy

steak deliciously. Make sure you get it decanted.

2015 Gundog Estate Hilltops, No.2 Shiraz Hilltops, NSW 69 A reasonably muscular shiraz with plenty of dark mulberry and plumb fruit layered over dried herbs. Won't disappoint.

2010 Moorilla Muse, Syrah Derwent Valley, Tasmania 120 From an area not known for Shiraz this is an absolute cracker, definitely in the "Syrah" sphere.

It will pleasantly surprise. Beautifully perfumed and floral with great structure and elegance.

2005 Mitchelton Print, Syrah Goulburn Valley, Victoria 125 This is classic Victorian Shiraz from a great vintage with plenty of bottle maturation.

2012 HEAD ‘The Brunette’, Shiraz Moppa, South Australia 99 This is a powerful "Barossa Shiraz" with fruit on the cherry end of the spectrum yet it still

possesses an elegance many do not.

2015 Gundog Estate, No.2 Shiraz Hilltops, NSW 69 A reasonably muscular shiraz with plenty of dark mulberry and plumb fruit layered over dried herbs.

Won't disappoint.

2014 Michael Hall Flaxmans Valley, Syrah Eden Valley, South Australia 79 "Rich and opulent, with a brocade of red and black berry fruits garnished with spice and a

little pepper.” James Haliday.

2014 Mitolo Angela Mclaren Vale, South Australia 65 A lovely example of Mclaren Vale Shiraz, made with restraint and poise, showing freshness

and fruit purity.

2014 Grosset "Nereus" Clare Valley, South Australia 82 New from the Grosset stable this is in fact a blend, predominantly Shiraz with a little

Nero d'Avola. Blackberry leaf and savoury it will be a nice accompaniment to robust dishes.

Dessert Wines

2015 Yalumba, FSW 8B, Botrytis Viognier (60ml) Wrattonbully, South Australia 8/38 The fruit spectrum of the Viognier - apricots, cumquats, peaches and spice - melded with the Botrytis

and with the acid structure of this wine make it really special. Not sticky - perfectly balanced.

2016 Alasia Moscato, D’Asti DOCG (150ml) Piedmont, Italy 10/48 Crisp, off dry and highly aromatic wine, with lovely notes of honeysuckle, citrus, toffee,

rosewater and dare I say grapes.

NV Vasse Felix, Cane Cut Margaret River, Western Australia 35 This dessert wine is produced from Semillon using the Cane Cut method, where each fruiting cane is detached from

the vine. The bunches are left hanging until the fruit has dried and concentrated in flavour and sugar.....a subtle blend of lemon meringue and gingernut, with hints of vanilla spice.
