Pest commonly occurs Pest may occur Recommended control

Notes:

Phomopsis Cane & Leaf Spot

Symptoms:

Leaf Small brown spots with yellow halos. May appear wrinkled.

ShootBlack spots and lesions. Severe infection during the early season mayresult in weakened shoots that may break during strong winds.

BerryParts of the cluster may dry out and break off, or berries may shriveland shed before harvest.

Ideal conditions for disease development:

Weather Wet and cool spring.

Downy Mildew

Symptoms:

LeafYellowish blotches (oil spots) on the top of the leaf and white down onthe lower leaf. Blotches turn brown, with possible leaf drop.

Shoot Tips will curl (shepherd’s crook) and a white down will form on the stem.

BerryWhite down on berries. Red varieties turn colour prematurely andwhite varieties appear mottled and remain hard when the remainingcluster begins to ripen.

Ideal conditions for disease development:

Weather Spring temperature of 11°C plus and a presence of rain.

Black Rot

Symptoms:

LeafSmall brown lesions (2-10mm in diameter) surrounded by a darkerborder containing small black spots (black pustules).

Shoot Brown to black elongated lesions with black pustules may appear.

BerryColour change from whitish to purple to black. They will become dryand mummified, staying on the rachi. By the end of the season theberries will be covered in black pustules.

Ideal conditions for disease development:

Weather Warm (20-25°C) and wet (lasting 6 hours).

Bunch Rot Complex/Summer Bunch Rot/Sour Rot

Symptoms:

Berry

Bunch rot complex typically results from secondary pathogens thatcolonize prior diseased or damaged berries. Berry breakdown(softening and collapse to brown and firm) with possible black spores(Aspergillus spp). Depending on the level of acetic acid a vinegarsmell maybe present (sour rot).

Ideal conditions for disease development:

Weather Warm and wet with lesions present on the berry skin.

Grey Mold (Botrytis Bunch Rot)

Symptoms:

Leaf Necrotic brown spots.

InfloresAt time of infection they may dry out, but can allow for the disease toremain latent until veraison.

BerryAppears as a grayish ash-like substance. As the berries mature theyare more susceptible enabling the disease to penetrate without alesion present.

Ideal conditions for disease development:

WeatherThe disease typically starts in a wound caused by insect, weather oraccidental damage. Warm (15-25°C) and wet.

Powdery Mildew

Symptoms:

Leaf Discoloured spots that turn whitish.

Shoot Blotches that turn from brown to black.

BerryEarly infected berries turn an ash grey colour and are covered inspores (floury appearance), with later infections causing berries to dryout, drop off, or split.

Ideal conditions for disease development:

Weather (25°C) and dry (but humid).
