Attached to the back of this newsletter is the June calendar for 2015. The calendar includes the most up to date “snapshot” of the month of June including provincial exams, yearbook and report card distribution. In is important to note that regular classes will run through to June 19th. During the period between June 22nd and 25th, the school will host “review, completion and enrichment” (RCE) days. During this RCE period students have the opportunity to meet with their teachers in the event that they would like to review the course material from the year, with teacher permission complete additional or missed work to meet the minimal requirements for a course or to sign up in advance for enrichment activities.

I hope this message finds you and your family well and looking forward to the spring break! The break can provide a nice time for families to share time together and for students to recharge for the third and final term in the school year.
At this juncture I have only two staffing updates to share. I am pleased to report that our Vice Principal, Melanie Learoyd, has returned to work after an extended illness and has resumed responsibility for grade 8 and 9 students at Windsor. Additionally, Marjorie Dunn will be taking over her entire teaching assignment requiring us to say fairwell to Erin Ferguson who has done an admirable job providing instruction in the English and Drama departments during Ms. Dunn’s absence.
As you are likely aware, Windsor will be distributing term two report cards on Friday, March 6th in homeroom. In reviewing your child’s report card please pay particular attention to attendance data, work habits and comments. It is easy to focus purely on the percentage but the foundational elements listed above are critical to sustained achievement

of challenges, excitement and success! Term two is generally regarded as the most challenging in the school year and consequently students and teachers have been working to maximize student success. The winter season in athletics has also maintained Windsor’s reputation for excellence in sport, boasting North Shore Championship victories in: • Bantam Boys Basketball • Senior Boys Basketball
(Howe Sound Champions) • Boys and Girls Gymnastics These victories are representative of the hard work and dedication of all of Windsor’s teams and their coaches!
Following up on my letter of January 27th to all parents, the Board of Education passed School District No. 44 (North Vancouver) Capital Project Bylaw No. 116576. This Bylaw represents the Board of Education’s commitment to proceeding with the Seismic Upgrade to Windsor Secondary and allows the planning and design phase to go ahead. I have been providing updates at our Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meetings and will

This year, the Windsor Secondary School Green Team is hosting an electronics and battery drive through the ‘Think Recycle’ program. The drive will help the environment by recycling electronics responsibly and will also contribute to funding for further initiatives. Please support the Green Team by bringing in: smart phones, MP3 players, laptops and batteries to Room 207 from now until Spring Break.

Since 2008, Windsor Secondary and Obu Secondary High Schools (near Nagoya, Japan) have participated in a sister-high school exchange program. There have been two exchanges between schools to date, and the next one is planned for 2015/16. Our next exchange will have Obu visitors arriving in October 2015 and Windsor students traveling to Japan from April 17-24, 2016. This cultural exchange program is a wonderful opportunity for students in grades 9-12 next year. Participants must be in good academic standing and demonstrate a strong desire to participate in an overseas cultural exchange, as well as the ability to travel in a group as a representative of Windsor Secondary School. Thank you for your support. Community Clean-Up This year the Green Team has planned the community clean-up for Earth Day – April 22. Any and all classes are welcome to participate and there will be a pizza lunch prize for the class that cleans up the most! The cleanup area spans from Riverside Drive to Parkgate.

Organics Initiative The Green Team will be instrumental in rolling out the new Organics Initiative that is mandated by Metro Vancouver. From apple cores to pizza boxes, by keeping organic waste out of the landfill, Metro Vancouver expects to achieve an overall 70% recycling rate in 2015, and up to, 80% by the year 2020.
stay in Tokyo and a week spent in Obu City. Students attend their sister school, learn about Japanese cultural activities, visit Nagoya Castle and take a one-day field trip to Kyoto. All students and staff chaperones are hosted by Japanese families while staying in Obu. The costs of the trip include all activities while the Obu students are visiting here in
Vancouver, as well as all travel/food/activities while in Japan. If you think you might be interested in this rich cultural exchange opportunity, please see Mrs. Ottenbreit in the library for an application. Work Experience WEX12A or WEX12B (4 credit) During Grade 11 and 12, students are placed with local employers in positions that align with their interest and future career goals. The community becomes the classroom where students gain experience in the workplace and are provided with a frame of reference to review or revise their career goals. Through employer assessment, students receive valuable feedback about their employability skills and technical skills related to specific occupations.

Work Experience Teachers and the Work Experience Facilitator will work with students individually and in small groups to assist students with choosing and obtaining relevant and meaningful placements.
Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) Windsor Secondary School offers Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) in conjunction with the Industry Training Authority (ITA).
The Secondary School Apprenticeship program is designed for those students who are currently working part-time in a trade, under a certified Journey Person, or who know of someone who might hire them to work in a trade. It is possible for students to earn up to 16 credits while in school. Four credits are assigned for every 120 hours of work completed. These hours are also counted towards the total number of hours needed to become a journeyman in their chose trade. Trades are not what they use to be. The Bantam Boys Gold basketball team won the North Shore division 1 playoffs in front of a supportive home crowd 33-23 over Elphinstone. The team earned the right to host the playoffs after finishing first in the regular season with an 8-1 record. We were fortunate to have enough grade 8 boys to run two teams and the bantam green team also had a fantastic season, qualifying for the playoffs and falling a game short of playing the gold team in the semi-finals. The future looks bright for Windsor basketball with the strength of the players on the green and gold teams. The Juvenile boys basketball team ended the season strong qualifying for the V&D playoffs after a 3rd place finish on the North Shore and an exciting wildcard win over Alpha. The Junior boys basketball team finished one spot out of the playoffs but had a great season with some strong wins.

The ski and snowboard team had a great turnout at the zone competition in Whistler. Congratulations to John Forssander, Sasha Makarevski, Thomas Mcquarrie, Nicholas Rae, Teagan O'Shaughnessy, and Zachary Curran who qualified for provincials in Revelstoke next week. The Bantam girls basketball team is a talented squad full of potential. They are an enthusiastic team that will be a force in the league if they keep playing together. The Juvenile girls’ basketball team played in a very competitive league and finished with a 4 win, 6 loss league record. The team battled some injuries and a small roster but fought hard every game and showed resiliency to have a great season. The Senior boys basketball team are Howe Sound champions and off to the BC championships after their exciting 58-55 win over Sutherland on February 25th. Michael Holowaty and Bentley Heathcote were selected to the tournament All-star team while Thomas Bush was selected the tournament MVP. From February 16th to 20th
the Senior girls basketball team took part in the Lower Mainland championships to qualify for the BC's. The results were not available at the time of writing the newsletter but are available at dukesathletics.ca The gymnastics team swept the major prizes at the North Shore meet that was hosted by Windsor. The team won the boys, girls and overall banners. The team will look to continue their winning ways at the Provincials hosted by Sutherland from March 5th-7th. Spring sport tryouts have begun in junior and senior girls soccer, junior and senior ultimate, badminton, junior boys rugby, girls rugby, bantam boys volleyball, mountain bike and golf.
Suarez and Piper Steffen who placed third in the novice ski race and to Christophe de Haas' who placed first in the novice snowboard race. A big thank you to Lydia Forssander for her coaching and to Ms. McEwen, Ms. Bennet-Fox, and Mr. Lewis for helping Ms. Thomas with sponsoring the team.

As you likely know, the Metro-Vancouver-wide effort to keep food scraps out of the landfill is now in full gear. All schools are expected to fully comply with Metro Vancouver's organic waste disposal ban. To do this, we are preparing to roll out new, compartmentalized waste receptacles in all our schools later this spring. “Organics only”, “Waste Only”, “Mixed Recyclables” and “Paper” will each receive a designated bin to simplify sorting. Located in hallways and high traffic areas, the receptacles will allow for staff, students and even visitors to send waste in the right direction.

PAC was proud to present speaker Terry Small on January 8th to a crowd of nearly 200. Parents and students packed the multi-purpose room to hear the presentation “How to Get Better Grades” Those that attended had many positive comments about the unique approach to studying and learning. From apple cores to pizza boxes, by keeping organic waste out of the landfill, Metro Vancouver expects to achieve an overall 70% recycling rate in 2015, and up to 80% by the year 2020. By diverting organics from the landfill, methane, a potent greenhouse gas, will be reduced in the atmosphere (deprived of adequate oxygen to promote the decay process, food waste rotting in landfills produces methane). Even better is the boost to agriculture that will come from this new source of compost. Educational materials are being developed to help
everyone understand the importance and necessity of this initiative and staff will be advised as soon as they are available. We do recognize that this represents a change in habits and behaviours, but we hope that with everyone’s support, the transition happening all over the Lower Mainland will be straightforward in our schools. As noted above, the Metro Vancouver ban makes it mandatory to keep organics waste out of the landfill, and we want to avoid any possible penalties that could be imposed down the road for non-compliance.
