Windows Server 2008 Hyper V

Overview

Virtualization is the creation of a virtual (ratherthan actual) version of something, such as -

Use of software to allow a piece of hardware to runmultiple operating system images at the sametime.

An operating system

A server

A storage device

A network resources,

Applications etc.

Hypervisor

A hypervisor is a virtualization platform that allows one ormore guest operating systems to run on a host computer atthe same time.

There are three types of virtualization forms

Type 1 (Native or Bare Metal) Type 2

Operating system installed directly ontothe physical hardware

Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM), role is tocreate and manage virtual machines

VMM here runs in User Mode

VMM here are process virtualmachines

Examples - Microsoft Virtual PC,

Microsoft Virtual Server 2005


Hybrid

Both the host OS and the VMMessentially run directly on thehardware

Host OS and VMM both share CPUcycles

VMM here runs in Kernel Mode VMM here are system virtual

machines

Type 1

A hypervisoris a layer of software thatexists just above the hardware

It provide isolated executionenvironments called partitions

Each partition is provided with its own setof hardware resources -such as memory,CPU cycles

There are two variations of Type 1 VMM:Monolithic and Microkernelized


Monolithic

Hypervisor has its own drivers foraccessing the hardware beneath it.

Drivers and third-party code runs invery sensitive area

Driver stability is a critical issue

Microkernelized

One VM is the parent partition whilethe others are child partitions

The parent partition creates andmanages the child partitions, and itcontains a virtualization stack that isused to control these childpartitions
