Windows 10 v1909 User information provided by U.S. Fleet Cyber Command (FCC)/U.S. TENTH Fleet

(C10F):

This article provides NMCI users a guide to the process for an NMCI computer to update to Windows 10

1909. The user should backup data prior to the update, and disconnecting KVMs is recommended.

In preparation for the update, an application, ‘Seat Health Check’ will be installed on the machine. When

the application has been delivered and installed, the user will see the application listed in the Start

Menu, and will also see a desktop icon.

The Seat Health Check performs two functions in support of the Win10 1909 update. It enables the user

to check the readiness of the seat for the update, and also provide a means to launch the update. This

puts control of the schedule for updating in the hands of the user. However, the user should consult

with their chain of command for direction on when to perform the update.

To check seat readiness for the update, the user opens the application by either selecting it in the start

menu, or double-clicking on the desktop icon. The user may be prompted to refresh data, and should

select yes to ensure they will have the most current status.

The user will see a series of screens after clicking yes, or if user selects refresh in the U/I:

If the user is not prompted for a refresh (or after completion of the refresh) the user will see the U/I

below. This displays general information for the computer including seat name, model, asset tag, serial

number, domain, and Win 10 release version as well as when data on seat status was last updated.

To check the computer’s readiness for the update to 1909, the user should click on the drop-down

arrow at the end of the block for ‘Update Readiness Semi Annual Channel Release 1909’. This will then

display another block which includes a status summary, a Question Mark button for accessing detailed

information and a Start Update button that will be used to launch the update when authorized. Note-

the button will be ‘greyed out’ and will not launch the update prior to C10FLT approval to execute the

update on NMCI. Again, the user is reminded to consult their chain of command for direction on when

to execute the update after the ‘Start Update’ button is activated.

After clicking on the Question Mark button, the user can see the status of all conditions/systems that

are necessary for readiness and their individual status, a few of these are controlled by the user, for

example connection to AC power is required, disk free space of 15GB or more. The list includes the

current status under ‘Current’ and the required status for the update under ‘Expected’.

Note the checks for pre-loads and McAfee modules. These are delivered by enterprise level systems

to the computer while it is connected to the NMCI network. Delivery of these have been challenging in

the current teleworking environment and no call to the helpdesk is required if these have not passed.

The user can assist in delivery of these by regularly connecting using RAS VPN in the off hours, leaving

the machine on and connected for several hours at a time.

The check ‘Block Group Membership’ determines whether the computer has been placed in a block

group. This could be due to having a non-core application that was identified during the Early Adopter

phase as having an issue requiring remediation. It could also be because the Ech II CTR determined that

due to an issue such as deployment, blocking the update at this time is necessary.

If the check preventing updated readiness is the Power Status, user should confirm they are using the

correct power input for the machine and/or swap the power cord/adapter. Power modules can still

function to power the computer but have conditions the machine detects and reports as a power

related failure.

When C10FLT authorizes deployment of the update on NMCI, the button ‘Start Update’ will become

active. User should consult with chain of command, and when directed click on the ‘Start Update’

button to execute the update on the machine.

Again, user is reminded to back up data and it is recommended that

KVMs (Keyboard, Video and Mouse Switch boxes) be disconnected.

Computer must be connected to AC power for the update.

The user will then be prompted with a screen to confirm starting of the update, this also warns that the

computer will be unavailable once the update starts.

Note, the computer will initially go into a setup phase for the update and the user will still be able to

work on the computer during this phase. The user is prompted to choose between an immediate reboot

after the setup phase or a delayed reboot. The immediate reboot will execute immediately after the

preparation phase with no notification to the user.

User clicks Start Update

If the user chooses delayable reboot, the user will receive notifications and option to delay up to

2.5hrs. During the setup phase, the user will see the following in the U/I for Seat Health Check.

After the setup phase completes, a user selecting immediate reboot will receive no notifications, the

machine will boot into the update. A user who selected delayable reboot will see the following in the

U/I:

After both the immediate and delayable reboots the user will initially see the following screen:

This will then be followed by the following screen showing progress of the Win10 1909 update. The

machine will not be accessible until the update completes.

Upon logging in after the update completes, the user can check the status using the Seat Health Check

U/I, which will show the Update Readiness as ‘Already at Release 1909. The user will no longer be able

to access update readiness details.

If the update is attempted and fails to update, the machine will remain at 1803 and the user will see a

‘Previous Update Attempt Rolledback’ notification. It will also provide an ‘Error Description’ providing

the reason for the rollback to refer to when contacting the helpdesk.

However, external devices such as storage devices and KVMs can cause a rollback. If the Update

Readiness is showing ‘Ready to Update’ the user can disconnect the external devices and try again.

The Seat Health Check application desktop icon and Start Menu listing will continue to be present. In

the future this application will be used to provide status on various systems required to maintain the

machine updates and applications current.
