page 2 Volume 3 The Pastor Writes…...

Dear Friends,

As you know by now, Beth Christopoulos, our super-efficient and truly car-ing Administrative Assistant, is leaving us. When you read this, she will be at Lake Junaluska in her new job. Happy face for Beth and Lake J. And for her beloved Atlas (her grandson) and his mama and papa. Sad face for us. God bless you, Beth. Thank you for your extraordinary work.

When you read this, we (the Staff-Parish Relations Committee) may have determined who her replacement will be…and maybe not. We will announce it as soon as we have found the right match for the position. Please bear with us through this process. Even when we have a new person in the office, please bear with us, as there will be learning curve to the various work that needs to happen to help us continue to run efficiently and with grace. This position is a heartbeat of our ministry together and so very important.

Whether we have made a new hire yet or not, there will be things that are not up to our current standards and things will fall through the cracks. We will, however, seek to minimize those things as much as possible. And, then, pretty soon, we will be moving full speed ahead once again in our ministry together.

I want to remind you, as well, that we are still in transition with our ministry with senior adults. Michael Copeland has been a godsend to us as our new Assistant Pastor and Director of Senior Ministries. As has Heather Case, who has stepped into the role of Windsor Hills Tours Coordinator. We have made great progress in a short two months but, again, please bear with us. Pray for your church and for these transitions, and for all the people involved. May the Lord grant us grace and strength. Peace,

Doug

35 YEARS OF CARING AND SHARING

In 1982, the Administrative Board at WHUMC approved a new ministry for our church. It was presented to the members of an adult Sunday School class and interested church members by Mental Health Services of the Roanoke Valley. It was

called AFTERCARE SOCIAL CLUB, serving adults with mental disabilities who had been previously psychiatrically hospitalized. Church members participated in several training sessions, and visited other churches already providing this ministry. Our first meeting was March 1983.

35 years later, we are still going strong. Come on March 4 for WHAT! in Windsor Hall from 4:30-6:00 to learn more about this journey, meet our Social Club members and volunteers, help us celebrate this ministry, and enjoy dinner together.

We meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays in the old fellowship hall, and it always feels like “a homecoming” when we gather together. We play games, make crafts, listen to music, exercise, and EAT! (we can always use more help in the kitchen!) When we venture into the community, it can include dinner out, a baseball game, Zoo visit, bowling, picnics, etc.

This church is amazing in its outreach to our club members! Thank you, Windsor Hills! Thank you for 35 YEARS!

UMM [United Methodist Men]

If you see a statue being erected on the front lawn of the Salem “Back to the Future” Courthouse, it’s not an image of Gen. Andrew Lewis, it’s one of Steve Magenbauer, head coach of the Spartans. Green Bay had Lombardi , and Salem now

has Magenbauer. The town is 100% body and soul behind him, under Friday night lights, and throughout the week.

On Feb. 19 Steve spoke to a good turnout of the UMM, and gave insight into his amazing overall 50-3 won-lost record, 4 class 4A state championships, and 2 4A Coach of the Year awards during his 10 year coaching tenure at Salem High.

Salem High’s success does not come from recruiting super student athletes, but from buy-in by typical Salem home-grown young people to the school’s high standards, and their acceptance of personal accounta-bility for behavior and performance, whether in the classroom, the band room, or on the football field.

Steve is old-school in establishing discipline and de-manding personal best effort from each player, with the emphasis on 11 players performing as 1 very effective football team, and the results speak for themselves. All players wear full football gear at all practices to build cohesiveness and toughness. Emphasis is placed on safe football techniques. Salem experienced no concussions during this past year’s championship season.

If I were a kid again and physically up for the demand-ing summer two-a-day practices in full gear, I’d sign on to play for Steve. He commands respect, and turns out winners, on the football field, but more importantly, in later life. From the UMM perspective, his statue on the old courthouse lawn is well deserved.

Do you need or want to learn CPR? Windsor Hills will be hosting a CPR/AED course at a time convenient for those who are interested. We have one person signed up. We need 6. The Trustees are offering to pay half of the $50 fee for the course for the first 5 people to sign up. To do that please email HelenRuth Burch at [email protected] . It is important to have people in our congregation certified in CPR and who know how to use the AED. This is not at skill that is just useful at church functions—it carries over into the rest of our lives. I am looking forward to having at least 5 people sign up for this class. - HelenRuth Burch

Volume 2 CHILDREN † YOUTH MINISTRIES page 7

Greetings In Christ from W.H.Y. (Windsor Hills Youth)

We’ve had lots going on lately! We had a wonderful time at Virginia Tech during the Wesley Weekend. The theme this year was being “Anchored in God.” It was very emotional, as students of the Wesley Center told personal stories of times when they felt lost in grief and how their faith and the fellowship of church helped them get back on their feet again. Breakout groups for the youth allowed for them to explore there own challenges and there need for the personal and ever present love of God.

We were so happy that many of you enjoyed out Potato Bake! Our sincere thanks for the love offering which will go towards the down payment for our Lake Junaluska retreat in July.

Our Sunday 2/25/18 meeting was a special Youth Group Meeting from 5 pm – 7 pm with a gathering for all Adults and Youth to form a Youth Council to assist guiding the vision of Windsor Hills Youth. You do not need to commit to joining the council but it will be an open forum to discus the dreams and

goals of the program and to discuss how the council will be a part of it.

As always, we are praying for you!

Yours in Love & Joy! Pastor Jeff and WHY (WHY? Because we love you ♥)

Hello Friends!

Warmer weather seems to be heading our way. While we are looking forward to longer days and warmer weather, Children’s Ministries hasn’t let the cooler weather stop us from having fun. We had 50 people join us for Snow Tubing at Wintergreen and 21 children attended our 2nd Annual Parent’s Night Out. A big thank you to the youth who came and helped! They provided much needed help and leadership throughout the evening.

As we embark on the season of Lent and the Easter season, invite your child to share in the journey with you as you explore it for yourself. Studies show if we want our children to have faith “that sticks” or is du-rable, we must include them by making them feel they are part of their faith community. Explain Lent is a time of serving others, fasting, and reflecting on the life of Jesus Christ. When discussing the Easter story, remember to keep it age appropriate. For most children gaining a deeper understanding of Holy Week may seem scary. Keep it simple by explaining Holy Week in terms they will understand: Psalm Sunday, Maundy

Thursday, Good Friday, and ending with Easter Sunday. By explaining Holy Week, children gain a better under-standing of Easter and God’s amazing love for us.

In the Works: Young People Greeters, Readers, & Offering Plat Helpers. I will e-mail out a schedule for when your child is set to serve in one of these roles. Our Easter Egg Hunt & Parent Brunch will be on March 25

th

during the Sunday School hour. We are also planning a Spring Carnival on May 19th which should be loads of fun!

Make sure and like us on Facebook if you haven’t already as we post pictures from our outings and events on a regular basis.
