Specialist toughened glass man-ufacturer TuffX has just had a third glass toughening furnace installed. Part of a planned invest-ment of £1.2 million in 2015-16, the Tamglass (Glaston) Furnace FT 500 means the company now has a weekly glass production capacity of 25,000m2 of 4mm toughened conservatory roof glass and is one of a select few manufacturers with three furnaces.

TuffX’s Graham Price said, “We have three Tamglass furnaces because they are the best on the market for toughening glass. The quality they give is excellent, which is exactly what we want for our customers.”

wider programme of investment scheduled to take place this year. Elsewhere in the business, a new factory extension, which will take manufacturing space from 55,000 square feet to 80,000 square feet, is due to be completed in August, helping to meet growing demand for TuffX’s glass products.

TuffX’s meticulous approach and comprehensive range of spe-cialist toughened glass makes it popular for both high profile large scale complex commercial contracts and smaller fabricators and installers looking to add value to their portfolio. Further value is added with the company’s approach to product innovation, the perfect example of which is a brand new product called Am-bi-Solid glass that bridges the gap between tile effect

conservatory roofs and solar reflective glass roofs.www.tuffxglass.co.uk

The new furnace gives TuffX a great deal of flexibility. It can toughen glass with thicknesses of 4mm – 19mm, but perhaps most eye-catching is the size of the sheets it can handle: up to 4.2m x 2.4m.

Graham commented, “Investment in a new furnace gives us the in-frastructure to produce processed glass for an even wider variety of complex commercial applications, giving us greater scope to supply developing markets.”

TuffX has a policy of continuous investment in its business to allow it to constantly meet and exceed its customers’ expecta-tions and the furnace is part of a

Eurocell – one of the UK’s lead-ing manufacturer, distributor and recycler of window, door, conserv-atory and roofline products – has announced the acquisition of Vista Panels from CorpAcq Ltd. Vista is a major manufacturer of com-posite and PVC-U entrance doors, with a turnover of approximately £14 million. CorpAcq bought Vista in April 2008.

Vista has been at the forefront of growth in the composite doors market in the UK, with a strong presence in the social housing and private RMI sectors. It is also the sole supplier of entrance doors to Eurocell and a significant consum-er of Eurocell profile. The Wir-ral-based company employs over 100 people nationwide.

Eurocell offers a wide range of PVC-U doors, including French doors as part of its Eurologik and Modus systems and in-line patio doors in bar length and kit form. It is also the UK market leader in PVC-U bi-fold doors, with the Eurocell Aspect system still the only product currently available to achieve both BBA and full Secured by Design accreditation.

Keith Sadler, Managing Director of Vista Panels Ltd, said: “I’m delighted. We have forged a close working relationship with Euro-cell over 10 years, so we feel like a member of the family already. For all of us at Vista it’s genuinely exciting to be part of a group with such a track record of success and clear roadmap for future growth.”

Patrick Bateman, Eurocell CEO, commented: “Keith and his team run a successful company. But it’s their energy, enthusiasm and progressiveness that makes Vista stand out. It’s logical, therefore, that we wanted them to join forces with us. Together we have a stronger proposition in markets strategically important to both businesses.”

Home Security Sense, the indus-try-wide campaign to encourage home insurers to offer discounts on policies if doors and windows are accredited to a Secured by Design (SBD) standard, has se-cured political backing.

Member of Parliament for the Ribble Valley, Nigel Evans MP, has picked up the mantle, writing on its behalf to Minister of State for Housing and Planning, Bran-don Lewis MP raising the points made by the campaign.

The cost of home insurance claims for burglaries average at £2,178. Secured by Design accredited building products and specifications can deliver a dramatic reduction in break-ins and have the potential to save the insurance industry tens of millions of pounds each year.

But despite this very few insur-ers offer reduced premiums for the installation of SBD products. “This is absolutely incongruous with what the Government is trying to do to design-out crime”, said Ian Longbottom, Chairman,

ing door SBD approval in 2009. Since then, the company has added its Ultimate Aluminium bi-fold door – another industry first – a second PVC-U bi-fold door system and an extensive range of composite doors.

Sliders UK is encouraging the window and door industry to get behind the campaign ‘Home Security Sense’, by promoting the benefits of SBD products to homeowners.

The fabricator is also encourag-ing systems companies, install-ers and fabricators to write to their local MPs, highlighting the contribution that SBD products can make in cutting crime.

The calls have also received support from both the police service and SBD.

Ian concluded: “It’s a massive oversight, and in effect is leav-ing consumers out of pocket, whether or not they have in-stalled SBD products, because nationally an opportunity to lower the incidence of burglary is being missed.

“This is not only a cost to insur-ers in pay outs but to each and every one of us in higher premi-ums to cover them.

“It’s a very simple equation – the more SBD products we fit, the lower the rate of burglary and the lower the cost to insurers.

“This saving should be passed on to homeowners who install SBD products, while in offering lower premiums for those who do, insurance companies have an opportunity to kick start a positive cycle of investment.”

Sliders UK.

He continued: “The introduction of Part Q in new build is founded on a recognition that SBD and PAS24:2012 independently ac-credited doors and windows can contribute to a significant reduc-tion in crime.

“This contribution is recognised at an industry wide level by the Association of British Insurers but this doesn’t translate into lower premiums for homeowners in the same way as for example, fitting a burglar alarm might.”

In a letter to the Sliders UK Chair-man, Nigel Evans MP writes: “You’re campaign draws out some valid points in regard to insurance. Given that as you say, Secured by Design products can reduce burglaries by up to half, it seems that this should be a very significant factor in premiums.”

Sliders UK became the first PVC-U patio door manufacturer to be accredited with Secured by Design status in 2008, it also secured the first PVC-U bi-fold-

Stevenswood, a West Lothi-an-based manufacturer of in-dustry-leading PVC-U systems from The VEKA UK Group has been selected as one of the London Stock Exchange Group’s (LSEG’s) prestigious 1,000 Com-panies to Inspire Britain in 2016.

Described by the LSEG as “an annual celebration of some of the fastest-growing and most dy-namic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK”, the report – now in its third year – is supported by numerous senior politicians including the Chan-cellor, George Osborne MP, with media partnership from indus-try-championing national news-paper, The Daily Telegraph.

Only 56 Scottish companies, and 104 from the manufacturing sec-tor throughout the UK made the list, further highlighting the prow-ess of Stevenswood’s achieve-ments over those of its peers.

Managing Director, Ron Hepburn commented: “To be listed in the report is reliant on a business’ performance over the last four years – a period of significant growth for Stevenswood – and we’re thrilled to have our accom-plishments recognised by such a prominent exponent of UK enterprise.

“2014 saw us relocate to a new five-acre home, streamlining our manufacturing, with all processes now taking place under one roof. Capacity more than doubled within months of the move, com-fortably making us Scotland’s premier trade fabricator and one of the UK’s top 30.

“Early last year, we secured £3.5m investment from the Business Growth Fund (BGF), enabling us to further expand production and double our trade counters throughout Scotland

from 6 to 12. Thanks to the cap-ital that the BGF invested, sales grew by 23% in the 12 months to 31st October 2015, and we now plan to open 10 additional trade counters in 2016.”

The boost in production and sales has been reflected in Ste-venswood’s employment figures, with 60 new jobs created since the BGF’s investment, taking the company’s total workforce up to 158.

“Stevenswood’s growth has been rapid but sustainable”, Ron continues, “and we’ve never compromised the quality of our product or service. Our main market remains the loyal trades-people we have built up over the years, but increasingly we’re working with homeowners who want to ‘do it themselves’ too.

“The VEKA UK Group is the ideal systems supplier as it more than satisfies every link in the supply chain. Homeowners love the quality, versatility and perfor-mance of its products, and its installer support programmes provide reassurance that the fit will match the finish. As a fabri-cator, we know that the demand for VEKA products will always exist – especially given its pro-pensity for technical advance-ments – and we don’t underes-timate the role our relationship with The Group has played in our continuing success.”

Dave Jones, Managing Director of The VEKA UK Group com-mented: “We’re thrilled to see the work of one of our leading fabricators celebrated in such a wide-reaching and well-respect-ed resource. Stevenswood has fearlessly grasped every op-portunity open to it, and thrived through a tough economic period where so many have fal-tered. On behalf of The VEKA UK Group I offer my sincere congrat-ulations – long may their success continue!”

Edgetech UK has been accred-ited with Passive House cer-tification for three of its Super Spacer® products, reflecting its total commitment to energy performance in buildings.

Super Spacer Premium has been certified with the Passive House Institute’s best available energy efficiency class stamp of phA+ whilst Super Spacer

Alan Fielder, Sales & Marketing Director at Edgetech UK said: “I’m delighted to hear that the Passive House Institute has recognised that these spacer bars are eligible for use under the Passive House standard – a sim-ple approach to building super energy efficient homes.”

While Passive House only ac-counts for a small percentage of buildings in the UK, many more developers and specifiers look for products that offer top ther-mal efficiency.

The Passive House Institute also considers hygiene when certi-fying spacer bar components. By reducing condensation and maintaining comfortable humidity levels, Super Spacer can virtually eliminate the potential breeding ground for mould growth and as-sociated health problems. Super Spacer’s qualities have made it popular for hospitals and medical facilities all over the world.

Alan continues: “This acknowl-edgement from the Passive House Institute further secures Edgetech’s place as the leading voice for energy efficient win-dows.”

TriSeal/T-Spacer Premium and Super Spacer TriSeal/T-Spacer Premium Plus have both been accredited with phA standard.

All three of Edgetech’s spacer bars significantly exceeded the required minimum specific edge resistance and were certified for the Arctic climate component efficiency class stamp, as well as for all climate zones with lower

SmartestEnergy provides customers with renewable electricity recognised as having zero carbon emis-sions under Scope 2 reporting, and backed by an Emissions Factor Model certified by the Carbon Trust.

REHAU’s UK Chief Executive Martin Hitchin said: “This is the latest evidence of REHAU’s commitment to an energy efficient, sustainable future – not just in the products we manufacture but in how we manu-facture them.

“As a group, we’ve targeted a 30% reduction in pri-mary energy consumption per tonne of production by 2020 (based on 2009 figures) and here in the UK this is a significant step in our progress towards that.”www.rehau.com

Just a few months after the publication of its latest report setting out its progress towards demanding sustainability targets, REHAU has made another big leap with a switch to 100% renewable electricity for all of its plants in the UK.

This includes not only its window system and pipe-work production facilities in Blaenau and Amlwch, but also its head office in Ross on Wye and its distribution warehouse in Runcorn.

Provider SmartestEnergy has issued REHAU with a certificate acknowledging its commitment to purchas-ing renewable electricity up until the end of September 2016, and REHAU has already confirmed that it will continue into 2017.

Specialist PVCu and alumini-um fabricator Mercury Glazing Supplies Ltd has just reported a 16% year on year demand for its bifold doors.

The impressive increase demon-strates Mercury’s growing reputation as a niche manufac-turer of high quality architectural aluminium and specialist PVCu products. Chris Reeks, the company’s Sales and Marketing Director comments, “Being a niche manufacturer means we can supply installers and fabri-cators alike without any conflict of interest.”

The company works with leading industry names such as Smart, Jacks Aluminium, Spectus and VEKA. The company is the UK’s largest manufacturer of the Spectus vertical slider and it has just added the VEKA FlushSash to the range to enhance its rep-utation as a niche manufacturer

still further.

Alongside the high quality product portfolio, the company’s commitment to customer service adds further value.

Mercury offers a 24 hour turna-round on both PVCu and alumin-ium quotes, a timescale that has been maintained even with the recent increase in demand for estimates.

Delivery turnaround times are

impressive too, with bifolds in white and anthracite grey now available in just ten days.

And the commitment to cus-tomer service doesn’t stop with turnaround times. Chris reports a recent story of the delivery team carrying an order for a new trade customer down a narrow country lane on foot when the road became impass-able for vehicles. “Needless to say, the customer was very impressed with our commitment to going the extra mile – literal-ly! – and we’re expecting further orders from them as a result.”

So with demand for the prod-uct range growing, the product range increasing, delivery times improving and the extra mile of commitment being the norm, the outlook is definitely hotting up for Mercury!

our plans,” said Managing Director Greg Johnson. “Warwick specialise in high-end, meticulously-crafted products, and the investment means we can scale up while continuing to provide our customer base with the best products and most reliable service around.”

The new corner cleaners and quad welders are just the latest in a string of investments made by the forward-thinking fabricator as it pursues ambitious growth plans for the year ahead.

2015 saw Warwick invest a further £500,000 in a second Schirmer Saw Centre, integral to the launch of Innolux, the company’s signature line of premium windows and bi-folding doors. This followed the launch of a rebranded Warwick North West, bringing together previously separate Warwick Developments and Warwick Sliders as a unified business focusing on specialist products. Continuing to look to the future, the company has also taken on four new ap-prentices.

Go on fabricating or start buying in and concentrate on installing? It may be a dilemma for many companies, but not for CJR Glass & Glazing – the Southamp-ton based company decided on a strategic plan to do both and now, with the help of trade fabri-cator Glazerite Windows Ltd, the strategy is paying dividends.

CJR is still manufacturing white casements as well as resi and French doors but now turns to Glazerite for all other coloured

The move was part of a consol-idation overhaul that also saw the company change over to the Veka system and move from two separate factories into a single, much bigger premises. Also the new unit includes a showroom, which means CJR can show its newly expanded range of prod-ucts at their best, especially with support from Glazerite on show-room display materials.

Glazerite Director Jason Thomp-son said: “We have encouraged many small fabricator-installers to shut the factory and concentrate on what they do best – selling and installing. And now here is a company that has found its own twist on that philosophy and it is doing very nicely as a result.

“Getting out of fabricating is still the best option for many but we realise it’s a big decision to make. CJR has shown how it is possible to make the best of both. Fabricating white frames in core designs gives them a simple in-house process with low stock levels and no complications, while buying in coloured foils and the premium and specialist systems gives them a large and varied offering that no business this size could ever dream of fabricating cost-effectively.

“CJR has shown the way here and if it has given anyone else any ideas, we would be very hap-py to help them to develop it.”

foils and window styles, including Vertical Sliders and Residence 9 as well as composite doors and bi-folds and is enjoying the best of both worlds, as founder Clive Ret explained:

“I didn’t want to get out of fabri-cating altogether. For one thing, we get a lot of council emergen-cy work such as break-ins. So now, I can still make and install a white window or door in 24 hours but at the same time, offer cus-tomers a wider range than ever.”

Emplas has installed front and rear facing cameras and re-al-time tracking throughout its fleet as part of a new drive on road safety and customer ser-vice.

The rear camera tracks loading and unloading of product. This footage is then transmitted back to Emplas operational hub for review to make sure that win-dows and doors are being dis-patched and handled correctly.

The front camera provides a record of how the truck is being driven, while data on breaking, acceleration and performance are also collated and transmitted back for download.

With seven 44 tonne trucks now on the road, the initiative sits as part of a dual commitment by the G15 Fabricator of the Year to road safety and the welfare of its people and service and product quality, as its Operations Direc-tor, Kush Patel, explained.

and logistics operation. This has included the extension of its factory production bar-cod-ing system to its dispatch and delivery operation.

As part of a rigorously con-trolled process, individual ele-ments of each order are auto-matically checked as they are prepared in the loading bays. They are then re-scanned onto the lorry, eliminating the ship-ping of incomplete orders.

At the other end of the process each product is scanned off the lorry, which doesn’t leave for the next delivery until all products and ancillaries are accounted for.

The paperless system then automatically issues a notifica-tion of receipt to the customer and the invoice, providing a clear audit trail, which supports their customers evidence their ‘factory management systems’ required under CE Marking.

As part of the real-time tracking process, Emplas customers also receive a notification ahead of time of the imminent arrival of their delivery.

Kush added: “We’re first and foremost working with our drivers to make sure that they get to where they need to go safely. There is, however, a dual benefit in that in doing so we’re improving our service and ulti-mately driving forward the end product quality that we deliver to our customers.”

For more information on Em-plas visit www.emplas.co.uk , email [email protected] or call 01933 674880.

“The cameras are as much about customer service as they are about road safety. The data we collect means that we can work with our drivers to pro-mote road safety and to opti-mise the performance of our fleet, minimising the impact of our logistics operation on the environment.

“It also allows us to monitor the loading and unloading of prod-uct to make sure that it’s being handled correctly, from a safety and welfare perspective but also one of product quality and potential damage in transit.

“It gives us real-real time data on how the trucks are being driven. Heavy breaking for example, triggers an automatic email alert. It’s an opportunity to drive continuous improve-ment throughout the delivery process.”

The road safety drive comes as part of a wider investment by Emplas in its manufacturing

SWISSPACER, manufacturer of high-performance warm edge spacer bars, reports an excellent start to the year in the UK and Ireland with sales up 10.2% in January on January 2015. It’s a positive start to a year which promises continued growth and exciting developments.

John Cooper, SWISSPACER’S Head of Sales & Marketing UK & Ireland, is looking forward to 2016: “We kick-started the new year on strong sales and we expect this to continue on the back of exciting new products

and our unique Marketing Toolkit launched at the end of last year. The Toolkit is a comprehensive

suite of selling aids designed to help fabricators and installers sell the benefits of warm edge easily and confidently.

“We’ll be at the FIT Show again this year and our new Toolkit will be the centre piece of our stand,” continues John. “We’ll also be showing our latest product development, SWISS-PACER Air, an innovative device that regulates the air pressure in sealed units to prevent break-downs caused by changes in altitude. It’s an exciting time for us and recent developments will ensure SWISSPACER maintains its leading position in the UK and Ireland.”

“We’d been looking for some time for a systems supplier to help take our business forward; not only through superior prod-ucts but a great support package too”, explains Pyramid Profiles’ Managing Director, Paul Bailey. “You need only read the trade press to see story after story of customer support and satisfac-tion with Halo. And The VEKA UK Group’s #JustTheFACTS campaign mentions more than

many of his customers receive as part of The VEKA UK Group’s phenomenally successful Ap-proved Installer Scheme: “In the past, our systems supplier had seemed content to ‘leave us to it’ as long as the orders kept rolling in! With VEKA and Halo there’s a much more proactive approach to ensuring success for each link in the supply chain; helping installers to promote their businesses to homeowners and, in turn, generating business for fabricators like us. It’s clear to see why over 600 companies have joined the scheme in less than two years since its launch.”

The VEKA UK Group’s Managing Director, Dave Jones welcomed Pyramid Profiles, saying: “It’s a bold move for any company to venture into partnership with a new systems supplier, especially after being loyal to one provid-er for over two decades. We’re thrilled that the combination of our products and support attracted Pyramid Profiles to The VEKA UK Group, and that we’ve emphatically made good in demonstrating the improved relationship that can and should exist between suppliers and fabricators. We hope our new pairing will be stronger than ever in 20 years’ time and look forward to continuing our work with Pyramid.”

Paul adds: “The ethic that comes from being a family com-pany is strong here at Pyramid, and the same is true with The VEKA UK Group. We can feel that everyone is working to-wards a greater good, and it has already given us confidence that didn’t exist with our previous systems company – to grow, expand production, and bring in new customers. We’re glad we made the move and look forward to what the future holds for Pyramid Profiles and Halo together.”

100 companies switching profile systems with them in the last 12 months which gave us extra confidence in changing over with them.

“We’d always liked the looks, quality and versatility of Halo’s Rustique profile, and because they are part of The VEKA UK Group, we knew they’d offer stability, longevity and product investment.

“The recent Imagine suite of doors is a great case in point – a collection that’s been designed from the ground up with no expense spared, to meet every challenge that might be thrown at it. Our customers love how it ‘ticks all the boxes’ – securi-ty, energy ratings, adaptability, weatherproofing and style – for even the most demanding of homeowners, and its indus-try-leading credentials don’t stand to be surpassed anytime soon!”

Paul also notes the support, particularly with marketing, that

Faced with a continued rise in demand for their products in the South West of England, Swish fabricator Seal-Lite Group has reached the end of an 18 month period of investment in the company’s infrastructure with the company’s customers immedi-ately seeing clear benefits.

No less than £300,000 has been spent in a programme that has seen every aspect of the Cleve-don, Somerset-based company’s production facility enjoy improve-ments with an impressive shop-ping list that has included new machinery from Rotox, Elumatec and Haffner-Murat in addition to tracking technology provided by First Degree Systems. The result is not only greater than 99% on time and in full deliveries to its customers, but a marked im-provement in the efficiency with which those remarkable figures are now achieved internally.

With sales now swelling to more than £5 million including a rapidly growing trade sales division of £3 million, Seal-Lite has grown on the back of its policy of offer-ing transparency and value for money but crucially, dependable quality and deliveries. The latest investment is designed not only to allow the company to cope with the continued increase in

sales but also to be able to maintain and even improve its efficiency whilst providing ease of management and control of the company and its day-to-day output.

“We have an excellent reputation in the South West that means we will grow into the increased capacity as a matter of course,” said Chris Shearn who runs the company with brother Jim. “We were already running at very high efficiency and quality rates but we wanted to improve the processes as well as grow out-put, so we were also operating well within our comfort zone.”

Demand for the company’s products has increased through its retail sales but at an even greater rate of growth amongst trade customers. “Retail cus-tomers are the most demanding and you have to be at the top of your game to compete in that sector,” said Chris. “And that makes our offer especially sharp for trade customers who enjoy the same service and support. The Swish brand also continues to be very effective,“ he added, “backed with a huge range of brochures, samples, mailers, point of sale and even clothing that they use for their own cus-tomers.”

Swish Fabricator Seal-Lite Invests For Demand And Efficiency

L to R Jim and Chris Shearn of Swish Fabricator Seal-LiteDirect Trade have acquired an additional 40,000 square feet production facility enabling them to further expand their product range.

“The addition of the new facil-ity will allow us to expand our product range and offer our customers more choice and an improved service” explains Ste-ve Green, Direct Trade’s Man-aging Director. “The factory will be dedicated to the manu-facture of PVCu Door products, Composite Doors, Conservatory Roofs and Aluminium Windows and Doors. In addition to this, the Doncaster based facility will also house the internal sales team within a state of the art office environment.

“We are delighted with the new premises. To be in a position to increase not only production capacity but also our product portfolio is excellent news. This expansion will ensure we are responding to the growing de-mands within the market whilst continuing to deliver the highest level of service to our custom-ers.”

Guardian Industries UK Ltd. (Guardian) has earned the covet-ed BES 6001 accreditation for its responsible sourcing of materials. After independent assessment by the British Standards Institution, the awarding body, Guardian UK received a “Very Good” score, highlighting the company’s long-term focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The Building Research Estab-lishment (BRE) Ltd.’s BES 6001 certification assesses how well companies operate within strict standards of supply chain man-agement and environmental and social responsibility when man-aging relationships with suppliers. Specifically, it acknowledges the “Responsible Sourcing of Con-struction Products.”

glazing industry and how the standard could be applied to ad-dress this construction product in the supply chain.” Chris Duguid, Guardian’s – Float Production Manager, led the implementation.

Various sustainability assessment methodologies, including the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) recognise re-sponsible sourcing, which counts toward the credits required to assess the code level of a build-ing. BREEAM is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings and communities. It sets the standard for best prac-tice in sustainable design and has become the de facto meas-ure used to describe a building’s environmental performance.

Architects and specifiers ask for this accreditation as they apply for the buildings they develop to be assessed by BREEAM. Having BES 6001-accredited building products provides addi-tional credits that are necessary to achieve the higher levels of performance. A higher BREEAM score also can make their build-ing more marketable.

The BES standard requires an organisation to demonstrate good management of trans-port impacts, greenhouse gas emissions, and the impact on employment and the local com-munity. And the holder also must show that it engages with its own supply-chain partners to deliver sustainable policies of their own.

“This process took time and it was a challenging task to achieve the ‘Very Good’ rating that we were awarded,” said Chris Du-guid. “We’re delighted that our efforts in the area of environmen-tal responsibility have now been recognized by a respected and independent party.”

Part of Guardian Industries Corp. – a leading global manufacturer of high-quality commercial, residen-tial, interior and automotive glass products – Guardian secured accreditation in late December.

Having the BES 6001 certification not only shows Guardian to be a responsible company that cares for the environment, noted Ste-ven Scrivens, Marketing Manager for Guardian Glass UK & Ireland, but it also helps it to stand out amongst its competitors.`

“We’ve been following the devel-opment of this standard for many years,” said Scrivens, who was actively involved in the process. “We worked with both British Glass and with BRE – the authors of the standard – to help them to better understand the glass and

CMS Window Systems has been named in an influential report by the London Stock Exchange as one of the top 1000 most excit-ing and dynamic businesses in Britain.

The 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain 2016 report, which con-tains a foreword by the Chan-cellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, along with other lead-ing politicians in the business community, identifies CMS as one of only a handful of com-panies in the door and window industry that are inspirational in their success to date and growth potential. London Stock Ex-change Group CEO, Xavier Rolet, describes these 1000 businesses as the ‘engine of the UK econo-my’ because they help create an ‘antifragile’ SME economy which is more robust, more flexible and less prone to boom and bust.

With growth from a £1.4m turn-over business to a £35m com-pany employing more than 245 people in just 10 years, CMS has excelled consistently thanks to a sustainable business strategy which delivers a range of high performance building envelope solutions with the flexibility to suit the varied demands of the housing and commercial building sectors.

CMS provides a total building envelope package which up-grades the thermal performance and visual appeal of any building to roof height through the instal-lation of external wall insulation (EWI) and cladding solutions in addition to designing, manufac-turing and installing windows, doors and curtain walling. All its solutions ensure Britain’s housing stock and buildings can achieve 21st century energy and comfort standards by fabricating products using the best availa-ble components from industry leading supply chain partners like Kawneer, Metal Technology, Sheerframe, Yale and Saint-Gobain.

At the helm of CMS since its inception is Andy Kerr, a UK winner of the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2015. He says: “It’s fantastic to be recognised by the London Stock Exchange and feature in their Top 1000 Com-panies to Inspire Britain report. Our rapid growth is testament to the fact that having a truly sustainable business strategy – environmentally, socially and economically – is key to being successful in today’s ultra-com-petitive market. For further information visit www.cmswindows.com.

20 installers have so far enjoyed free training ses-sions courtesy of Buckingham-based sash window specialists Roseview. Since last year, Roseview managing director Willie Kerr has been delivering two half day courses – one designed to improve product knowledge and one explaining how to sur-vey and install sash windows – to roomfuls of eager installers wanting to learn more about how they can succeed in the buoyant and lucrative VS market.

“We’ve been delighted by the success of the sash training school,” said Willie. “The two courses give us a chance to put to bed the outdated myths and stereotypes about sash windows being difficult to fit, and explain to installers the unique features and benefits of the Rose Collection. We all know the market is getting more competitive, and installers now need high-quality products to help them stand out from the crowd. By the end of the course all delegates should understand how our sash win-dows differ to others on the market. Demand is such that I’m now running one per week and we’re planning to increase this over the coming months.”

Marketing manager Mike Bygrave followed on from Willie’s comments: “The courses are free and give us the chance to show our commitment to our cus-tomers. The aim is to equip our installers with the knowledge they need to sell and fit sash windows – all they have to do is give us a call to book their place.”

Though based on REHAU and Eurocell profile systems, Roseview’s signature Rose Collection offer a unique take on the uPVC sliding sash. The Charisma Rose, Heritage Rose and Ultimate Rose have been carefully designed and expertly crafted to deliver the most authentic-looking PVC sashes currently available. The G-Award-winning Ultimate Rose features mechanical joints and elegant run-through sash horns, and has been approved for use in numerous conservation areas.

In April, Roseview will be showcasing their prod-ucts, as well as those of their secondary glazing sister company Incarnation Windows, at the FIT show for the first time.

Investment in student housing continued to grow in 2015, with contracts awarded to build more than 4,500 new student bedrooms, the highest annual amount in over five years.

The total value of construction projects for student housing was worth over £2.3 billion in 2015, with investment in the sector showing no sign of slowing down. There was an overall increase of 26 per cent in student bedrooms be-ing commissioned for construction in 2015 compared to the previous year.

The peak of student housing con-struction came in the final quarter of 2015, as contracts were award-ed to build 2,117 units, the highest total recorded since before the recession.

Commenting on the figures, Michael Dall, lead economist at Barbour ABI, said: “Student housing has undergone a signifi-cant amount of change over recent years, with rising rental fees and a higher level of expectation from the occupying students.”

Universities and investors are behind a wave of more modern accommodation, with Wi-Fi to en-suites now becoming the norm as they attempt to attract prospect-ing students with high end living facilities. A wave of post-graduate accommodation has also come into play and I expect this to con-

BFRC has issued its 25,000th Homeowner energy efficiency certificate this month. It is the only such certificate available in the UK glazing sector.

The recipient of the 25,000th certificate, Linda from Sussex, told us why she wanted one: “I think it’s important to have so that I can prove that I have rated windows when it comes to selling my home. I’ll show whoever needs to see it.”

2385 Building Reg Cert Window A+1Each certificate is specific to the property and the products installed and features the installers name and date of installation as well as the well-known ‘rainbow’ colour label.

If an installer uses BFRC energy ratings as the route to compliance for ADL (rather than U-values) then this Homeowner Certificate can

be issued for the client. At the point of notification on the FENSA website installers are asked if they would like to issue one for their customer and it is dispatched with the FENSA certificate.

The certificate gives homeowners proof of the level of energy effi-ciency of the windows and doors they have ordered as verified by the premier, independent authority on window and door energy rat-ings. It can be kept by the home-owner and presented to an Energy Performance Certificate surveyor and any prospective purchasers when it comes to selling the prop-erty.

“The message that homeown-ers need to use BFRC registered installers and manufacturers is hitting home,” commented BFRC managing director Chris Mayne. “More and more installers are

issuing certificates – and increas-ing numbers of consumers are demanding them.”

This BFRC Homeowner Energy Rating Certificate costs the install-er just £1.50 (ex VAT). As it is not mandatory homeowners are also able to purchase this certificate direct in the event that the installer does not provide it – costing £10 (ex VAT). Replacement certifi-cates can be purchased in the event of loss.

The appearance of a number of glazing companies in the prestigious ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Britain 2016’ report reinforces the strong standing of the industry, according to glazing & construction market-ing specialist Balls2 Marketing.

The third annual report, creat-ed by the London Stock Ex-change Group and published in conjunction with the Daily Telegraph, celebrates the achievements of the UK’s most

“It’s heartening to see that Brit-ain’s business community rec-ognises the exceptional work taking place in the UK glazing sector,” comments Andy Balls, Managing Director of Balls2 Marketing.

“Glazing is a dynamic indus-try that showcases the best in UK manufacturing. Companies are continuing to invest and to innovate, and the result is a range of solutions made with precision, delivered within fast lead times and tailored to what customers actually want.

“It’s no coincidence that glaz-ing was amongst the fastest sectors to come out of the recession. The industry recog-nised the possibilities in home improvements – today, glazing solutions are being created that offer unmatched security and thermal efficiency, while achiev-ing exceptional aesthetics.

“That gives homeowners and developers the confidence to invest in their properties by adding windows and doors that not only look good but deliver in long-term performance and reliability.

Celebrating 25 years in business, it’s all smiles for Northern Ire-land-based Profile 22 customer Super Seal.

Opening its doors in 1990 in the midst of the double glazing boom, local businessman Kenneth Taylor identified a sig-nificant gap in the market and quickly capitalised on it. Identifying a distinct lack of quality uPVC window and door products in the local area, Taylor and his team set up shop in a small premises in Castledaw-son making 50 frames a week. Now a market leader in uPVC window and door manufacture and instal-lation, Super Seal has grown from this figure to now manufacture more than 2000 frames per week from orders received through four sites across Northern Ireland.

“Despite our rapid growth, we made sure to re-main true to our core ethos,” explained Managing Director Kenneth Taylor. “We value the individuals who helped us to grow and this is reflected in every aspect of the business.”

Initially manufacturing traditional uPVC windows and doors, Super Seal has grown to specialise in producing an array of uPVC products, including fully reversible windows for the Housing Executive market and has now opened a new composite door factory in Lurgan.

“More recently we added aluminium windows, doors and bi-folding doors to our range,” said Tay-lor. “We’ll also be launching an exciting new product at FIT Show 2016.”

With customer service an important part of Super Seal’s business, according to its Managing Director the company has always aimed to be recognised as a highly customer focused supplier. Hosting three nights of celebrations with its north and south customers for hitting 25 years was therefore to be expected.

Hosting celebrations late last year at the Lough Erne Resort in Enniskillen, the Clarion Hotel in Cork, and the Red Cow Hotel in Dublin, besides the anniver-sary buffet and company speeches the celebrations gave Super Seal the opportunity to tell its custom-ers about the exciting new range of niche products Profile 22 are set to reveal at this year’s FIT Show.

The VEKA UK Group’s inaugural Supplier of the Year awards has seen EWS (Manufacturing) Ltd. scoop the overall winner’s prize. EWS provides steel reinforce-ments for the Group’s indus-try-leading PVC-U systems.

The awards were split into four disciplines, with EWS trium-phant in the Technical – In house design category before going on to win the main prize. Renolit was named best Manu-facturing Consumables supplier, with OMYA and Chick Plastics successful in the Raw Materials and Ancillary categories re-spectively.

“We’re meticulous in our vendor selection”, commented Nicola Woods, Purchasing Manager for The VEKA UK Group. “Every month our key suppliers are provided with a Vendor Rat-

month, without fail – in order to remain our approved sup-plier, and we also hold regular face-to-face review meetings to develop relationships that are beneficial to both parties. Through these interactions, we have the utmost confidence in the efficiency and robustness of our supply chain, and we can pass that assurance on to our valued customers.”

The Vendor Rating scores for five key areas – product qual-ity, on-time delivery, customer service, quality system (ISO 9001), and environmental man-agement system (ISO 14001) – were compared for all sup-pliers, with EWS achieving the highest cumulative score of all.

Andy Richardson, Chairman of the Wolverhampton-based cold-rolled production special-ist said: “I am delighted that EWS has won The VEKA UK Group’s Supplier of the Year Award. EWS is honoured to have enjoyed a trading rela-tionship with VEKA for more than 25 years. The Supplier of the Year Award is a reflection of EWS’ determination to excel and the commitment and high standards of EWS’ employees. We’re proud of our contribu-tion to ensuring that The VEKA UK Group’s systems meet the most demanding standards and accreditations.”

Dave Jones, MD of The VEKA UK Group congratulated EWS, saying: “Our aim is always to work with companies that up-hold the same exacting stand-ards as we do, and nurture those relationships to create a stronger partnership. These awards are a great way for us to encourage superior perfor-mance in all our suppliers, and deliver the benefits to our cus-tomers. Well done to EWS for demonstrating excellent quality and service, in this, the awards’ first year.”

It also provides the data from which we’ve calcu-lated our top-scoring suppliers, and now – with these awards – acknowledge the crucial contri-bution they make to The VEKA UK Group’s continuing success.

Free FENSA Window and Doorset Energy Ratings were launched on January 1st. Al-ready hundreds have asked to Opt In. But what is driving this surge in interest?

FENSA surveyed the installers that emailed in January to ask them why they were so interest-ed. 76% stated it was because they wanted to sell FENSA rated energy efficient windows dis-playing labels that will have their company name on.

Only 63% stated they were Opting In to FENSA Window and Doorset Energy Ratings because they are free.

“FENSA knew that its Window and Doorset Energy Ratings would be popular,” commented FENSA managing director Chris Mayne. “But we have been taken aback by just how much demand there is. I think that we were right to believe that they would change the face of Window and Doorset Energy Ratings. In 2015 53% of notifications were using energy ratings to comply with Building Regulations. I think we can safe-ly predict that this will rise dra-matically by the end of 2016.”

FENSA Window and Doorset En-ergy Ratings are free for FENSA certified installers. It is totally voluntary. All they have to do is Opt In, agree to the rules and be supplied by a BFRC licensed fabricator.

These new Window and Door Energy Ratings are operated and independently verified by BFRC. It is exactly the same as the

existing BFRC scheme in terms of ratings, ratings bands, license scopes and windows and doors covered. Labels provided will cover windows and doors rated ‘A++’ to ‘G’.

The only difference is these new labels are branded FENSA and will have their own marketing support. These ratings will be marketed heavily at consumers in the second half of 2016 to raise awareness and drive con-sumer demand.

Existing BFRC Authorised Retail-ers can quickly and easily switch to be a FENSA Authorised In-staller – by Opting In by emailing BFRC.

The benefits of Opting In to FEN-SA Energy Efficient Windows and Doors Ratings for installers are: an easier product to sell because homeowners under-stand and recognize energy efficiency labels; installers get their own labels; it is the easi-est route to Part L compliance; a listing on BFRC website (the first port of call for homeowners searching for energy efficient product); consumer publicity support & recognition; installers can source glass & frames sep-arately; opportunities to upsell; technical & marketing support and advice.

The Opt In process for FENSA certified installers is to email the Operations Team on [email protected] with their company name, registration number and name of their fabri-cator supplier. FENSA will do the rest.

DEAR GERALD

Dear GeraldThe new PAS24:2016 has arrived!

Some said it would never get here. It would be kicked into the long grass, or watered down so it wouldn’t affect them. Sit tight and do nothing, they said. Wait until we let you know.

If you listened to that advice, you’ll be 6 months behind your competitors who acted.

They’ve been selling doors that pass the new PAS24:2016 test. They can continue selling to New Build, conversions where Building Regulations apply, and Social Housing where housing specifiers are already insisting on it.

Secured by Design is going to adopt it.

Whatever your market, you’ll be affected by the new PAS24. Independent tests show 7 out of 10 composite doors fail this test. They fail because the GRP skins on their doors are too thin to offer the necessary protection

If the skin on your GRP door is 1.6-1.8mm thick, you’re out of luck. It won’t pass. Skins need to be at least 3.6mm thick. And since GRP skins are the most expensive component in a GRP door, prices will rise sharply as composite door manufacturers upgrade their specs to pass.

In a recent article, Mila Technical Manager Strafford Cooke said there will be a period of grace for manu-facturers, because not all UKAS test houses are set up for the tests yet. So there’s no reason to rush to change supplier.

Technically he’s right. But everyone’s been talking about the new test for 6 months. Housebuilders, private developers and Social Housing specifiers have been listening to the same debates, and read-ing the same magazines as you. They’re already asking for secure doors that pass the proper tests.

Given a choice between doors that pass and doors that fail, whose doors will they buy?

More alert homeowners also want proper doors, and predominantly they search online to find them. They don’t want to be palmed off with doors that let burglars in within seconds.

Every month, 45,000 homeowners looking for doors visit our website to find installers who sell our highly secure, premium quality, stylish doors.

One definition of marketing is, selling products that don’t come back to customers who do.

Don’t installers want that? Happy customers who keep coming back because their doors don’t?

Just for the record, Solidor, with its solid lami-nated-hardwood timber core, passes the new PAS24:2016 test with ease. In January we also standardised on Ultion, the most secure cylinder door lock.

So now we say, with a considerable degree of con-fidence, that Solidor is by far and away the most secure composite door.

Sincerely

Gareth Mobley CEO, Solidor

32 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

DEAR GERALD

Most of us lust with our eyes and buy with our heart. When our eyes and heart are not engaged, we quibble about price and other details. But when our eyes and hearts are fully engaged, we want it now, soonest. We can’t wait to spend what it takes to get our hands on what we fall in love with.

Is love too strong and emotive a word?

Who’d have thought we’d fall in love with technolo-gy? Call it what you like, but brands like Apple have created an overwhelming desire, an emotional reso-nance with a series of stunningly beautiful products. Apple’s computers always looked more attractive than others, but the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Macbook Air, iwatch and Apple TV have moved billions of us worldwide on to a different level altogether. Even Apple’s packaging excites longing.

This ‘emotional resonance’ is what underpins Apple’s faster sales and higher prices. Consumers find the money and pay the price because their products are different, desirable and simply lovely. Humans have always behaved differently around beautiful people and beautiful things.

Now, unlikely as it seemed a few years ago, peo-ple are behaving differently about some windows, doors and conservatories today. Pretty windows, beautiful doors and a wide palette of lovely colours are turning hearts and heads.

We should welcome this, because it means many more exciting opportunities. I certainly do, because over and above our best-in-class performance, Deceuninck designs its windows and doors to look beautiful and stand out. It’s why installers talk about Deceuninck’s pretty windows.

My forecast for 2016? This will be the year when beautiful windows and doors take off, when great looks and design move up a level and change the market.

The FIT Show 2016 will be dominated by a few absolutely stunning, stylish new windows and doors that will turn hearts and heads. And beautiful colour will become the main act, as it is on the continent. Keep a lookout for Deceuninck’s new stunners and prepare to drool!

Platforms Still Relevant.

I note with interest articles by Roy Frost on “Pretty Windows” and more recently from Dan Gill of R9. As someone who has been around PVC-U window & door system R&D for many years, I have long been

an admirer of Dan’s work and eye for detail, indeed I was of one his first customers in a previous life.

The entrepreneurial intention of both articles is in keeping with our industry’s history in finding new and evolving methods to push purchaser’s buttons by making decisions on beauty and/or fashion.

I’m no salesperson – but after 30 years in our industry – I do understand the need to give the pur-chaser what they want. However, there is more to fenestration innovation than fashion: beauty goes beyond simply what you see.

Brand new windows and doors are a major pur-chasing decision; most of us only do it once or twice in our lifetime. They are not fast moving, short-term consumer goods like mobile phones in shiny packaging. How many of us would purchase a car without knowing the full spec and what is under the bonnet?

Whether this is uppermost in the purchaser’s post-recession, decision-making process right now is a discussion for another day.

Today’s 70mm PVC-U window systems bring to the ‘user’ (not everyone owns their own property, or lives in a stone-built ‘chocolate box’ cottage) many, economic, social and environmental benefits as Dan mentioned such as energy efficiency, security and weather performance. However, what is not mentioned is longevity and durability. The PVC-U products which are installed in buildings now will be there for many years to come. They will proba-bly perform just as well for the next generation and beyond but at some point will become a legacy for a future generation once either the window or the building is no longer cost effective or can’t be renovated or repaired.

PVC-U has huge benefits as a material for windows because of its durability and cost effectiveness in relation to alternative materials, however the raw or virgin material is still derived from fossil feedstocks.

Mark Barsby

DEAR GERALD

WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016 33

Resources and materials are finite. It is reported that globally we are currently consuming natural re-sources of 1.6 Earths to support the current popu-lation. Estimates say that this will rise to 2 Earths by 2050 as global population increases.

As an industry. we have worked very hard at recy-cling, collection and sorting schemes and recycling numbers are impressive, increasing year on year, but we still have far to go on our ecological journey.

Planners and purchasers can specify/buy what they want, but selling on fashion and beauty should not be the only method. +90mm systems with many chambers are all well and good but they are con-suming approximately 30% more raw materials without the equivalent improvements in perfor-mance.

Longevity and durability are already high on the agenda with operation and maintenance sched-ules and manuals required for NHBC, CE Marking and Building Information Modelling (BIM). Design-ing windows that will last longer and can easily be maintained or upgraded and use less or smart materials is not ‘pretty’ but at VEKA, we as systems designers have a history, but also feel a sense of responsibility for designing products that consume less and are recyclable, that minimise legacy for consumers, users, the industry and the planet. VEKA was the first systems company in the UK and mainland Europe to invest in recycling plants to pro-cess and recycle post-consumer PVC-U windows.

Designing by the ‘modular/platform principle’, or ‘systems thinking’ makes a window much easier to dismantle, separate and recycle at the end of its useful life. A decision which was uppermost in our thinking when we re-designed our new Matrix 70 Infinity. A window that can contain up to 80% post-consumer recycled PVC-U, while still being stylish, modern, thermally efficient, secure, weather tight and durable. M70 Infinity is VEKA’s 2nd gener-ation recycled platform system. Does it give all the ecological answers? Probably not, we are on an evolving journey, but for the reasons set out in this letter, platform systems and modular thinking are very relevant to the longevity of our industry.

For just the facts about Matrix 70 Infinity, come and visit us at The Fit Show stand No. 150

Mark Barsby

The VEKA UK Group

In his recent letter, Mark Barsby, VEKA UK, says “Planners and purchas-ers can specify/buy what they want, but selling on fashion and beau-ty should not be the only method.” He adds: “90mm+ systems with many chambers are all well and good but they are consuming approx-imately 30% more raw

materials without equivalent improvements in perfor-mance.”

Today, purchasers expect their windows to meet all their basic needs. They expect excellent weather performance, security and energy efficiency. They expect low maintenance and a long, trouble free life. Like everything else they expect their windows will be recycled at the end of their life, and they will. But they don’t get excited by needs, any more than they get excited about separating their household refuse into different recycling bins each week. And they won’t pay any more for them.

Perhaps deliberately, Mark concentrates on their needs and plays down their wants. But purchasers have moved on.

Conspicuously, traditional PVC-U window systems have made no headway in conservation areas and listed buildings. That’s despite trying for decades to ignore planners, and install inappropriate windows that stand out like a sore thumb. Perhaps it’s time the industry moved on too.

That’s why I based the design of R9 on the dimen-sions and detailing in Article 4 directions, the plan-ners’ bible. Rather than try to persuade planners to accept standard shiny-white 70mm PVC-U win-dows they didn’t want, I designed windows the way they’re meant to be. R9’s 100mm system was not an arbitrary size, it was designed for period properties and the conservation market. And because R9 is ex-actly right, homeowners don’t have a battle on their hands. Planners recommend R9 to them.

If systems using less PVC-U were the answer, as Mark implies, he wouldn’t have discontinued his 58mm system.

Quite rightly Mark emphasises longevity, but most PVC-U windows are recycled well before their time. Typically, homeowners replace functioning PVC-U windows when they move home, retire, or see neigh-bours or friends upgrade their windows and doors. Usually they upgrade because they look tired, ugly

or inappropriate, and they upgrade mostly because they want to, not because they have to. They up-grade to enhance the appearance of their home, so it looks the way they want it, or it looks the way it was meant to be.

They resent paying a penny more for windows they need and have to buy, and negotiate keenly to get the price down. But they’re happy to pay a lot more for the windows they want.

So let’s stop telling homeowners and planners what’s best for them, and listen to what they’re telling us.

Sincerely

Dan Gill, Chief Designer and MD

The Residence Collection

Mark Barsby VEKA UK refers to my ‘Pretty Win-dows’ article in a recent letter saying “Planners and purchasers can specify/buy what they want, but selling on fash-ion and beauty should not be the only meth-od.” He also dismisses 90mm+ systems with many chambers saying: “they are consuming ap-

proximately 30% more raw materials without equiv-alent improvements in performance.”

Deceuninck don’t sell a 90mm window system in the UK, and I’m not defending any particular sys-tem depth, but doesn’t VEKA sell a 90mm (and an 82mm) window system in Germany? And for now at least, aren’t we still one Europe?

Regardless of frame depth, British specifiers and homeowners like slimmer, prettier systems de-signed to suit our architecture and character.

Mark makes much of recycling in his letter. We believe it’s important too. That’s why Deceuninck in-vested in one of the largest, most modern recycling plants in Europe.

But we need to be clear about needs and wants.

We have to satisfy people’s needs. Homeowners,

developers and specifiers expect their windows and doors to keep the weather and burglars out and the heat in, and last a long time with little trou-ble or attention. No one gets excited about that. Maybe they should. But they don’t.

People don’t get excited by what they need, they get excited by what they want. And when they’re shopping for wants, people buy with their eyes.

Selling to people who are shopping for needs is hard work because buyers don’t really want to buy. You have to persuade them. But when you sell wants, buyers get excited and persuade them-selves.

Needs and wants aren’t interchangeable. Wants mean desire, lust and longing, powerful urges that demand to be satisfied. When our eyes lock on to beauty, our hearts and wallets follow. If we really want something, we’ll do whatever we can to get it.

Designing windows is complicated, but looks shouldn’t be an afterthought. By and large, all lead-ing Syscos can manage needs.

Installers sell looks, because in a market where so much is so similar, that’s what homeowners buy. That’s why we get a kick when installers say people prefer Deceuninck’s pretty windows.

In order to provide additional support for its ever-growing cus-tomer base, Liniar is delighted to announce that Terry Grant has joined the sales team – and after six months of gardening leave he’s “chomping at the bit” to get started.

With almost a quarter of a centu-ry of industry experience under his belt and a well-known face in the trade, Terry brings with him a wealth of know-how as he re-unites with several of his former colleagues.

Terry began his inauguration in the industry in 1992, working at Regency Plastics for two years before moving on to KB Sterling for a further two years, and then spending four years with Dip-lomat before joining Eurocell in 1999. He spent 16 years there

before leaving his role as Re-gional Manager in the South last June.

“I’ve been thinking about taking on a new challenge for some time now and the opportunity to join Liniar was just too good to refuse,” Terry explained.

“The message coming through from the customer base has pointed to a desire for product innovation to meet the require-ments of movement and de-velopment in the market place. You only have to walk around the showroom at Liniar to see that philosophy of innovation is behind everything that they do.

“I was attracted by the fresh opportunity of working with a successful and profitable com-pany,” continues Terry. “I already

had great relationships with several of Liniar’s sales direc-tors, Howard, Martin and Ken, after working alongside them at Eurocell. And, of course, it will be great to be working with Roger again.”

Terry took six months of gar-dening leave due to the terms of his contract with Eurocell, which also prevents him from contacting any of his old cus-tomers until July this year. So what has he been doing to keep himself occupied during his enforced break?

“Well, my garden is now im-maculate! Seriously though, it’s been quite nice to have a break. I’ve managed to get around to finishing off plenty of long over-due jobs around the house and garden.

“But as well as DIY, I’ve had time to get my clubs out and enjoy a few rounds of golf, go on a couple of lovely holidays and see some of my four grand-children in their nativity plays over Christmas – something I was never able to do with my own children unfortunately.”

So, has Terry become ac-customed to being a ‘man of leisure’? Apparently not.

“As much as I’ve enjoyed a rest, I’m chomping at the bit to get back to work! I’m looking forward to introducing myself to all of my new customers and developing relationships with them.

“I’m passionate about helping to develop the businesses that I work with. My job isn’t just about selling, it’s about offering customer support and a quality service.”

Terry will be on the Liniar stand at the FIT Show in April for anyone who would like to come along and say hello.

As a result, we saw a huge growth in demand for our laminated product. My fo-cus was then to ensure that we could cope with this demand going forward, and so we de-veloped a plan, invested in new equipment, refurbished existing equipment and increased our headcount to make lamination a 24/5 operation able to respond to customer needs. In 2014, we produced over 10 million metres of laminated product!

Barry Gets The Green Light At Glazerite

Glazerite, one of the industry leading manufacturers of PVC-U trade frames, windows, doors and conservatories, has an-nounced the appointment of a new Group Environmental Man-ager, Barry Baddock.

Barry, who brings nearly 10 years of experience to the role, has been tasked with reducing the amount of waste produced by the company across all its sites, and has already introduced a raft of new measures designed to improve recycling efficiency and ensure a significant reduction in the amount of material sent to landfill.

“The whole system for the dis-posal of used materials has been revamped. Last year we pro-duced something in the region of 174 tonnes of general waste,

including just over 17 tonnes of glass, but we’ll only generate a tiny fraction of that from now on,” Barry explained. “For in-stance, old and used frames are now stripped of all their metal components, such as the metal inserts, and 99% of this can be processed back into the factory, which has the added benefit of saving money of course. And be-cause the material we’re return-ing to VEKA for recycling is now 100% PVC, that also provides us with additional revenue.”

The role of Group Environmental Manager is an entirely new posi-tion created by Glazerite which, as a long term Network VEKA member, is extremely proud of its green credentials.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of the Glazerite team,” continued Barry. “Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill is my number one priority and it’s fantastic that I’ve already been able to implement a range of new procedures to help achieve this goal, as well as develop a long term strategy for environmental-ly friendly manufacturing at the company.”

Senior new appointment for dynamic

Dempsey DyerFollowing the news that trade fab-ricator Dempsey Dyer will be im-plementing a controlled expansion of their 64,000 square foot manu-facturing facility, the company has announced the appointment of a new production manager.

28 year-old Mark Beaumont joins Dempsey Dyer from Jeld Wen, where he oversaw the composite door production line, and is tasked with helping the Pontefract-based company ramp up productivity and increase capacity to meet its highly ambitious 2016 growth targets.

Managing Director Peter Dyer comments: “2015 was the most successful year in our 38 year his-tory and our ambitions for 2016 are huge. Mark’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Dempsey Dyer and considering he’s already proved himself elsewhere in the industry, we’re confident that he’s the man to help us take our busi-ness to the next level.”

Mark commented: “I really en-joyed my time at Jeld Wen but was looking for a fresh challenge and Dempsey Dyer seemed like the ideal career move. I’m relishing the challenge of having responsibility

not just for timber fabrication, but uPVC as well, and spearheading our ambitious growth efforts in the year to come. What’s more, I’ll be responsible for preparing for the launch of a brand new product coming later in 2016 – something that will take Dempsey Dyer in a new and exciting direction.”

“I’m also hugely passionate about lean manufacturing, and one of my biggest priorities this year will be ensuring we maximise our produc-tivity, and ensure every penny of investment is being used efficiently to deliver the highest quality prod-ucts to our valued trade custom-ers.”

Peter Dyer concluded: “With experienced and ambitious new starters like Mark coming on board all the time, it’s the most exciting time I can remember at Dempsey Dyer. We’re starting the year as we mean to go on – more people, more investment, more products, and, as ever, the very best stand-ard of service for our trade cus-tomers.”

Dekko Window Systems, the Lancashire based trade fabrica-tor, has appointed Lee Reynolds as internal sales manager as part of a strategic growth strategy. Lee, who joined Dekko in April in

another role, brings a wealth of all-round industry knowledge to the position.

“Lee seriously impressed me dur-ing his first few months at Dekko and we quickly decided he would be the perfect man to head up internal sales” said Dekko sales director Kurt Greatrex. “Lee pre-viously worked at an installation and a fabrication business, and that’s enabled him to gain a really deep understanding of the needs and priorities of installers, plus an encyclopaedic knowledge of the products we offer. I’m delighted Lee has taken us up on the offer and I wish him all the best in his new role.”

Lee commented: “I’m delighted to step up my involvement with such a cutting-edge fabricator. In recent years Dekko has surged forward with massive growth, moving into a 50,000 square foot new factory, and launching innovative new products. Our high-end product portfolio means we’re perfectly positioned to take advantage of the market’s contin-uing appetite for premium win-dows and doors, and anticipate sustained growth in the years ahead.”

Hardware supplier Winkhaus UK, has recently made some well-planned key personnel appoint-ments.

The company’s German Board has appointed Justin Harris as Manag-ing Director, following the upcom-ing retirement of long-serving in-cumbent James Hurst, whilst Anita Brinkworth has been appointed as Financial Director.

Anita is in her twentieth year at Winkhaus and brings a wealth of financial experience, having worked in all areas of accountancy for the company, most recently as overall Financial Controller. “I am very happy to take up this role and look forward to ensuring that our financial practices continue to compliment the needs of our growing business,” comments Anita.

Having spent 18 years at Winkhaus, Justin took over as

Commercial Director in 2013, and has shaped a sales strategy that has seen the company grow by 34% in that time. His thorough strategic knowledge of the busi-ness and market will ensure con-tinuity and further strengthen the company’s position as a market leader and innovator of hardware solutions.

“I’m looking forward to leading Winkhaus through the next stage of development,” said Justin. “Over the past 20 years, James has implemented great struc-tures and systems and has left us fantastic foundations to further build on. I want us to continue the tradition of stability, constant im-provement, and product innovation that make Winkhaus so unique. That means continuing to deliver great customer service, diversify our product portfolio, while at the same time promoting our already hugely successful solutions like the AV2 Family, and our recently

launched FireFrame – the fire door solution that’s helping our clients achieve compliance with all the new regulations.”

Justin has brought about other changes within Winkhaus’ senior management. Mike Rushen has become National Sales Manager, after eleven years with the com-pany, first as a Project Manager, and more recently as Commer-cial Manager. One of Mike’s first tasks in his new role is to recruit two new regional Project Manag-ers for the South-East, and the North-East regions. Mike will also be responsible for managing the sales team.

David Joseph, an experienced Project Manager since 2000, and member of both the Master Lock-smiths Association and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers, has also been promoted to Architec-tural Contracts Manager and will continue to develop Winkhaus’ growing reputation in the Archi-tectural and Veneered Timber Fire Door Market.

“I feel very happy, and privileged, to have such an experienced team around me,” Justin con-tinued. “By taking over respon-sibility for monitoring our sales performance and opportunities region by region, Mike frees me up to take a more strategic view of the business – while David will use his extensive experience to create new strategies and direc-tion for emerging markets. I am also blessed to have three other directors who between them have over 65 years’ experience working for Winkhaus, and it’s that knowl-edge and insight that ensures the continuity which is fuelling our ongoing success. We will all strive together to make sure that contin-ues, whilst also ensuring that the company remains a great place to work,” concludes Justin.

Based on independent tests and an upgrade to the Ultion cylinder lock as standard, Solidor con-firms its claim to be the most secure composite door on the market.

An independent test house put Solidor and two market leaders through the new, more demand-ing PAS24 cut test. Solidor passed, but two doors repre-senting 7 out of 10 composite doors on the market failed the test in under 90 seconds. Based on this, Solidor claimed it was ‘almost certainly’ the most secure door on the market. In January, Solidor announced it was now selling Ultion, the most secure cylinder lock, as stand-ard and has improved its claim to be ‘The most secure compos-ite door’.

Solidor passes the new PAS24 cut test, so it’s compliant with

Approved Document Q and can legally be installed on new builds.

Composite doors will pass the new PAS24 cut test if a 50mm square hole cannot be cut through the door using two chisels and a Stanley Knife in three minutes. If a hole can be cut through the door in that time, the door fails. The size of the hole is big enough for a hand to reach in and open the door from the inside using the key or thumb turn.

Solidor CEO Gareth Mobley says: “The industry has been talking about security and Ap-proved Document Q for the best part of a year, and I’m pleased the industry is taking action to upgrade the security it offers homeowners.

“The changes to the PAS24 cut test aren’t limited to hole size. A tester can now cut anywhere up to 700mm above or below the lock, so that’s most of the door. And the test applies to key/key locks where before it was thumb turns only.

“The new PAS24:2016 cut test will start to come into force from March 2016,” adds Gareth, “and is much more demanding than that required by PAS24:2012. It means some manufacturers have to work on their door con-struction to make sure they pass the new test.”

The most secure composite door

Specialist composite door fab-ricator, Vista, have launched the first video in an ambitious new marketing strategy for the year ahead. The stylish 25-second clip showcases the compa-ny’s best-in-class composite door, XtremeDoor – delivering a punchy breakdown of its securi-ty and weatherproofing features, while roving over its authentic woodgrain finish and polished stainless steel hardware.

This first video will be followed by eleven others in the months to come, as part of a year-long campaign to increase brand awareness, and help the fabri-cator’s installer clients promote XtremeDoor to end-users.

With a bespoke Yale 5-point lock, tripled-sealed outer frame and stainless steel hardware backed by a 25-year guarantee, XtremeDoor is renowned indus-try-wide for its robustness and reliability. The door has with-stood rigorous weather test-ing by Winkhaus laboratories, brutal security testing by Greater Manchester Police and has been proven to be 19% more thermal-ly efficient than the solid timber core composite door and 17% more thermally efficient than the traditional timber panelled door.

Distinction Doors launched its 70mm door in 2014 and demand has been increasing ever since. For Andy Grogan, Distinction’s National Sales Manager, there are many reasons why more and more fabricators are turning to Distinction’s 70mm solution to meet the growing demand for high performance, highly energy effi-cient composite doors across all markets.

First and foremost it’s vital the addition of this product is as trou-ble-free as possible. This starts with the ease with which it can be added to workflows. “Our 70mm composite door is compatible with all existing 70mm PVC-u systems, which gives it a wealth of advan-tages,” Andy comments. “For example, PVC-u fabricators will find that the same hardware and furniture can be used across both systems for ultimate flexibility.”

When it comes to machining, providing fabricators have an edge bander that will open up to ac-commodate the 70mm door thick-ness, fabricators who machine in-house only need limited additional tooling to enable them to create a gasket retention groove. “We can assist fabricators by writing the

necessary CNC programme based on an SCM machine,” says Andy. “Failing that, we can offer a prep-ping service based on the required PVC-u profile specification.”

Glazing is similarly straightfor-ward. “The 70mm glazing system is cosmetically no different to the snap cassette system used on our 44.5mm composite door,” says Andy. “When used on a 70mm door, the inner and outer connec-tors are mated using simple con-nectors that have a de-glaze ability designed in.”

Distinction Doors also offers com-prehensive technical support for fabricators adding the 70mm door range. Andy says, “Our technical team works with customers to put together machining specifications for options including their choice of PVC-u outer frame and sash system, hardware and furniture and low PVC-u and aluminium thresholds, as well as assisting with any training requirements. Furthermore, for customers need-ing assistance with developing marketing materials, support is available from Distinction’s in-house marketing department.”

Aluminium door specialist Alu-FoldDirect has launched its first range of Secured by Design (SBD), thermally efficient commercial doors, in order to meet the grow-ing demand amongst specifiers for high-quality SBD-accredited solutions.

The company has seen rapid growth in aluminium bi-fold doors and is now putting its expertise in aluminium towards the commer-cial sector. The new AluFoldDirect commercial door offers a durable, thermally efficient and secure solution that can be tailored to suit regular usage, emergency and anti-panic requirements, or a mag lock variant for maximum protec-tion.

All AluFoldDirect thermal commer-cial doors are Secured by Design accredited, Q Mark accredited and Document Q-compliant, having passed PAS23, PAS24 and BS EN1627 standards. They offer real thermal efficiency and can incor-porate a range of performance insulated glass unit options.

The robust construction and variety of security options with the AluFoldDirect commercial door make it ideal for high-traffic build-ings in the public sector – such as schools or hospitals – or private businesses, such as hotels or larg-er corporate organisations.

The range is being launched following research by AluFoldDi-rect, which suggests that – fol-lowing the legal requirement to use Secured by Design in certain new builds and refurbishments – specifiers across the country are increasingly being asked to adopt SBD as a matter of course.

Craig Miller, Managing Director of AluFoldDirect, explains that: “Many architects and specifiers are turning to the obvious ben-efits of SBD-approved products as they make the process more transparent and easy, right the way through to the client.

“As Building Regulations head more in the direction of fully ac-credited and certified products for high-value installations (such as schools, installers must be able to prove they have installed to the standard specified.

“SBD is a sure-fire way of getting products installed that have with-stood the rigours of extensive test-ing, under the gaze of a respected authority,” Craig adds.

To secure SBD status, the com-mercial doors tested include widths on single doors of up to 1250mm wide and 2350mm high and double doors to 2400 wide. Tested designs also incorporate emergency escape devices and controlled lock entrance devices.

AluFoldDirect will work with archi-tects, specifiers and developers to select the right door for each access point. In some occasions this will have been legislated for. “We’ll look at your plans on a door by door basis. The duty of care rests with the manufacturer to ensure a solution is fit for purpose, so you might say the responsibility literally ends at my door,” confirms

Craig Miller.

“We’re extremely confident in the design and manufacture of our range of commercial doors to offer safe passage where desired and real protection when needed. Frankly, you’d need a tank to bring down our max-protection door.”

Craig anticipates that the mo-mentum towards SBD-accredited solutions will not be reversed.

“Secured by Design is fast be-coming the go-to standard for the industry and will become com-mon practice. We’re providing a commercial door that ticks all the boxes: it is easy to specify, easy to install and will provide long-lasting results, so you don’t have to worry.

“Our new commercial doors are only the start of our commitment to SBD. AluFoldDirect is now also finalising the arrangements to launch our fully accredited SBD window range also, having suc-cessfully undergone the product testing phase.”

This latest model to join the Modus range is possible thanks to additional preci-sion-engineered mouldings inside the frame which remove the need for diagonal corner welds – a distinc-tive characteristic of standard PVC-U windows.

The new joint detail adds considerable authenticity to the appearance of the window and enables installers and fabricators to provide a product with the look of timber, while retaining all the optimum energy effi-ciency and virtually maintenance-free performance benefits of PVC-U. Conservation areas are a No Go zone for most window companies. Their windows are rejected by Planners. With over 8,000 conser-vation areas across the UK and a further 150 or so new areas added every year, it’s a growing problem. That’s why Residence 9 (R9) is growing fast. Its authentic looks and outstanding performance are designed for conservation areas.

R9, the super-premium compos-ite window system, is designed to match the drawings found in Article 4 directions, the Planner’s bible for conservation areas. It’s what Planners use when deciding if windows look authentic or not. The directions focus on the look of the windows and how they work, not the material.

Dan Gill, MD of Systems Compa-ny, The Residence Collection and designer of R9, says: “I spotted a gap in the market for high perform-ing windows in areas restricted by conservation rules. Planners refer to Article 4 directions which set out the dimensions and detailing of how windows should look. They don’t specify what they’re made

of. Using these specifications, I designed Residence 9 windows, ‘the way they’re meant to be’.”

R9 is foiled inside and out, and with a range of 42 colour combina-tions in stock, homeowners select the colour combinations, inside and out that sets off their home to advantage. R9 is a beautiful window, flush outside with equal sightlines and mechanical joint-ing; decorative detailing inside, because that’s what homeowners see most of the time. It’s designed to be highly secure, and with nine chambers it’s highly energy efficient, achieving A++ window energy ratings.

“Properties in conservation are-as and homes with character are no longer limited to replacing old timber windows with new timber windows,” adds Dan. “R9 gives homeowners the choice to en-hance the look and performance of their home with beautiful long-last-ing low-maintenance windows and doors.”

Just two months after its official launch, RegaLead is delighted to announce an overwhelming-ly positive response to its new Georgian lead profile, so much so that new sizes and colour op-tions have already been added to the range.

Seen for the first time at the company’s open day in De-cember 2015, the new profile replicates the look of aluminium Georgian bars, but with a host of additional benefits, including the in-house manufacture of even complex grids, and a significant reduction in the costs associat-ed with face fixed astragals. The specialist powder coating tech-nology, meanwhile, ensures the product is suitable for external use.

Guy Hubble, Joint Managing Di-rector at RegaLead comments: “We’re really pleased with the response we’ve had so far to our new Georgian lead profile. In line with demand we have already added a 22mm option to the range, as well as four popu-lar new colours across both the Georgian and standard lead pro-files: White, 9001 Cream, 7016 Anthracite, and Chartwell Green. It is certainly generating a lot of interest, with many customers telling us they love its flexibility for use in a variety of what might otherwise prove problematic applications.

their protection was a key re-quirement in creating the dis-plays. This was achieved by placing the works behind glass in specially designed show-cases. However, it was equally imperative that the glass should not interfere with the visitors’ enjoyment of the relatively small paintings.

GRDPR023bTraditionally, glass is used to create a barrier to protect its encased environment. Howev-er, selecting the wrong glass can impact the overall aesthetics by affecting unwanted glare, reflec-tion, and by fading the original colours of the artwork.

When the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, the Netherlands staged “Pleasure & Piety,” a unique exhibition of works by Joachim Wtewael, Guardian Clarity™ anti-reflective glass was selected to provide the perfect solution in terms of protection, low reflec-tion and high light transmission.

Joachim Wtewael (1566-1638) was praised as one of the great-est Dutch painters of his time. A unique feature of Wtewael’s was that he produced a number of works on copper. Pleasure & Piety is the first-ever large mon-ographic exhibition of his works. Organised by the Centraal Mu-seum in Utrecht, the exhibition brings together 40 paintings and 10 drawings from European and American museums and private collections.

These works are priceless, so

netron sputtering glass coating technology, Guardian Clarity is unrivalled in applications where reflection and glare can spoil the benefit of clear sight and pristine views. Used in combination with lighting, Guardian Clarity anti-re-flective glass was able to meet the Museum’s need to maxim-ise visibility with minimum light reflection and superior colour originality.

Kristine Kavelaars, Senior Pro-ject Coordinator at the Centraal Museum said: “These works are very special and although they are centuries old, they still look fantastic. We needed to strike a balance between delivering the highest levels of security for these often small and delicate works whilst meeting our visitors’ desire to get as close as possi-ble. Moreover, as custodians of our cultural heritage, we need to ensure that future generations too will be able to enjoy these masterpieces. We achieved this with Guardian Clarity glass.”

Describing Guardian Clarity as “unexpected glass”, Ms Kave-laars added: “I have to say that I had never seen anything like the ‘no glass’ effect. Many of our vis-itors, too, were not aware of the glass layer until it stopped them from touching the paintings. As a result we had to clean the glass quite frequently.” An interesting point is that whilst the exhibition has moved to the USA, the glass has remained in Utrecht – where it can be re-used in future exhibi-tions.

Henk van der Vlugt, owner of Glashandel van der Vlugt was responsible for designing the displays, and has worked with Guardian Clarity before. “The main reason for choosing the product for this solution was its performance: the quality of the anti-reflective coating. An addi-tional consideration though was the fast on-time delivery Guardi-an® was able to offer through its dealer network.”

TuffX Processed Glass, manufacturer of specialist, toughened safety glass, was selected to supply the glass that was needed. The technical team at the company specified the use of Pilkington Op-tiwhite™ low iron float glass to give the shop the wow factor it needed.

Because it’s a low iron float glass, Pilkington Op-tiwhite™ has a very high light transmission and is practically colourless, so for projects where trans-parency and purity of colour is desirable such as the Swarovski shopfront, it’s the perfect solution.

In total TuffX manufactured 20m2 of 12mm tough-ened Pilkington Optiwhite™ for the Swarovski shopfront. All edges were polished and drilled and notched to suit patch fittings to create a visually sophisticated finish and enable easy fitting once on site.

Graham Price at TuffX commented, “We were delighted to be asked to supply the glass for the Swarovski contract and are very proud of the re-sults. The purity of the glass is emphasised by the lights inside and makes the shopfront very bright and attention grabbing for passers by.”

Until now, window fabricators have had to carefully consider the difference in air pressure between the production site and point of installation. If the win-dows are to be installed at high altitude the performance of the glass unit can suffer because expanding air inside the unit puts pressure on the panes of glass. That can damage the seal which allows moisture in.

SWISSPACER Air resolves this problem completely. Invisibly integrated into the secondary sealant, SWISSPACER Air is a discreet component that helps to regulate the air pressure between the panes of glass as it changes with altitude. Anoth-er key benefit is that SWISS-

Leading warm edge spacer bar manufacturer SWISSPACER is launching SWISSPACER Air, a new innovative device that reg-ulates the air pressure in sealed units and prevents sealed unit breakdowns caused by chang-es in altitude. Air fits unobtru-sively into the spacer bar and sealant and relieves build ups in air pressure inside the unit that causes unit failure. It will be displayed on SWISSPACER’s stand at the Fensterbau Frontale trade show in Nürnberg on 16-19 March.

Mercia Marina Logic 11

“This was a large and complex job requiring the installation of doors and curtain walling, and we knew that Jack Aluminium offered the right solution,” comments Murray Pullen of Logic Aluminium.

Jack Aluminium worked closely with Logic to tailor its offering to suit the specific environment at Mercia Marina during the con-struction phase in 2014.

The Jack Door TD68 was de-signed to reduce fabrication time and wastage, while being thermal-ly efficient. It is also a Secured by Design approved product when manufactured using Jack Alumini-um’s technical information, further meeting the demands of modern commercial property developers and owners.

This is complemented by the Jack Aluminium Curtain Wall Suite

The benefits of a commercial door and curtain walling system from Jack Aluminium have been recognised after it was specified for an award-winning leisure com-plex in Derbyshire.

The £1.7 million development at Mercia Marina, near Willington, has transformed this popular venue – the largest inland mari-na in Europe – with the addition of the Boardwalk, a promenade comprising boutique retailers and a bar/restaurant. The project has been the recipient of both regional and national awards from the LABC Building Excellence Awards.

Jack Aluminium’s customer Logic Aluminium, a Nottingham-based specialist in the design, manu-facture and installation of com-mercial aluminium solutions, was hired to provide commercial doors and curtain walling for the Boardwalk.

which utilises a combination of aluminium and PVCu to assist the building performance, in terms of thermal efficiency and long-term aesthetic appearance. Aluminium does not rust or warp and can be selected in a number of finishes.

The Boardwalk was officially opened in October 2014 and immediately caught the attention of the building industry for its success in boosting the profile of an already popular location. After being voted overall winner at the LABC Building Excellence Awards’ East Midlands region-al ceremony in July 2015, the project went on to be crowned Britain’s Best Small Commercial Building at the national awards in October.

“Aluminium’s fusion of durability and aesthetics make it the ideal material for high-end commercial projects like the Boardwalk at Mercia Marina,” comments Jeff Pearson, Sales & Marketing Di-rector at Jack Aluminium. “Logic Aluminium have done a superb job that really complements the overall development and we’re extremely proud to be associated with this award-winning venue.”

ers to know where to look when sourcing their hardware needs, but a useful rule of thumb is this: it’s all about the service.

A reputable hardware partner will be able to advise and recommend on the best solutions for any given window or door, bringing years

With FIT Show rapidly approach-ing, the glazing industry is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to view the latest innovations in window and door technology. Yet while you’re being wowed by the latest advances in materials and systems, don’t forget to take a closer look at the hardware that adds those essential finishing touches.

From handles to hinges, no door or window would be able to per-form without the right hardware in place; likewise, with a wide variety of aesthetically pleasing options available, hardware can also enhance the ‘wow factor’ of a home.

With so much choice, it’s often difficult for fabricators and install-

of technical knowhow to help streamline the decision-making process. This is even more im-portant these days, given the rise of high-spec solutions such as bi-fold or lift & slide doors. Sim-ilarly, new materials bring fresh challenges – for example, the rise of engineered timbers such as Accoya have particular character-istics that help to determine the best hardware for the job.

Working with the right supplier will also ensure reliability of delivery. After all, the last thing a manufac-turer needs is a drop in the supply of crucial components, so it’s vital to take into account the distrib-utor’s stock holding capacity, sourcing capability and delivery parameters.

WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016 59

At the most basic level, there are two routes towards hardware procurement: to deal direct with the individual manufacturers, or to work with a distributor.

The direct approach is fine pro-vided you know exactly what you want; maybe you’re loyal to a specific brand, or the parts you need are particularly rare or unusual. Yet, in all likelihood, that won’t apply to every single piece of hardware you need, meaning you’ll need to spend considerable time in researching the market to find the right partners for every item.

Once you use multiple suppliers, you’ll need to deal with the add-ed complexity of having several invoices… which will likely add up to a large hardware bill given that you won’t benefit from economies of scale. Logistics also becomes more problematic, as you’re committed to receiving multiple deliveries into your factory. Man-aging the Goods In yard becomes a matter of juggling a fleet of lor-ries and vans to avoid frustrating bottlenecks.

In contrast, a hardware distribu-tor brings the convenience and stability of a single-source supply chain. One invoice, one delivery – and access to a wider range of product. The biggest distributors will attract the biggest hardware brands, saving valuable time on research because the distributor has already done their homework to find the best possible solutions for any given need.

Likewise, by working regularly with different products, you’ll benefit from the distributor’s experience in solving problems. If you have an issue, the chances are that the distributor will have encountered it before and be able to walk you through the answer.

Finally, a distributor will have an extensive supply network that takes the hassle out of deliv-ery. Sealco, for example, deliv-

ers anywhere in the UK and will support customers wherever they are. Indeed, my role since joining Sealco in late 2015 is to develop relationships with new and exist-ing customers in order to provide the best possible service when it comes to hardware.

And with all eyes on the FIT Show,

Sealco is exhibiting for the first time in order to demonstrate the breadth of brands and products we can offer. So look out for our ‘warehouse on a stand’ in Hall 2, where I’ll be delighted to speak to you about your hardware needs.

Yale Door and Window Solutions is now offering a maximum security Platinum 3 Star cylinder to provide the highest level of security against known cylinder attack methods.

Delivering multiple benefits to fab-ricators, installers and homeown-ers alike, the new maximum se-curity Platinum 3 Star cylinder has been designed to protect homes with its anti-snap, anti-bump, anti-pick, anti-drill and anti-pull technology. Its TS007:2014 3 star accreditation means this An-ti-Snap, British kitemarked cylinder offers an innovative solution that will deter even the most deter-mined intruder.

To achieve the highest TS007:2014 3 Star accreditation the Secured by Design Yale Platinum 3 star cylinder has been independently tested by BSI (British Standards Institution), against known cylinder attack methods. The benefit of the 3 star accreditation means no additional security door furniture is necessary to achieve the highest level within the standard.

Paul Atkinson, Sales Director for Yale Door and Window Solutions, said: “We’re delighted to offer

another cylinder in our range that has achieved the maximum secu-rity, TS007 3 Star rating. This high security cylinder offers maximum protection for homeowners and social housing residents across the UK and Eire. The Yale Platinum 3 Star cylinder can work together with other door furniture, such as the recently launched Yale 2 Star cylinder pull, to make up a door set of superior security or used with any furniture of choice whilst still meeting the standards.”

CWG Choices customers can now upgrade to Ultion on all its doors. Ultion is Brisant Secure’s flagship high security cylinder lock.

CWG Choices Director Jason Wilder says, “I’d heard about Ultion from a few different sources, including Solidor, so I looked into what it might add to our range. When I saw Ultion’s accreditations, I was impressed. We had to take it on.”

Ultion has achieved Sold Secure Diamond (SSD). It’s passed a series of real-life security tests carried out by Master Locksmiths Association locksmiths. There is no time limit on SSD tests, and if the cylinder breaks, it fails. If it doesn’t, it passes. Most cylinders fail the test within 1½ minutes. The MLA locksmiths stopped trying to break in after 2½ hours.

Endurance Doors has become the first composite door manufacturer in the UK to start using Mila’s fast-est to fit ProSecure door hinge.

Mila has produced a new version of the hugely popular hinge spe-cifically for composite doors and Endurance Doors has leapt ahead of the competition by becoming the first in the UK to start offering it to customers as its standard flag hinge option.

Mila’s ProSecure hinge made waves when it was launched last

year because it is a one piece unit which can be fitted straight from the box in less than a minute. In test installations before launch, Endurance Doors’ fabrication team were immediately able to reduce the average time taken to fit three flag hinges onto a door from six and a half to less than five minutes and is now on target to get that time down even further to less than four minutes.

Managing Director Stephen Nadin said: “Once we’re in full pro-duction, we expect to be able to

reduce the average hinge fitting time on each door by almost 50%, and when you’re making as many doors as we are, that’s a hugely significant saving.

“It’s not just about speed of fitting though – the ProSecure hinge has lots of other benefits which we’re keen to pass on to our customers. For instance, it’s available in a range of colours to suit changing consumer tastes and it’s easy to adjust onsite – from the front and not just from the side.”

Endurance Doors is the fastest growing solid and secure compos-ite door company in the UK and attributes much of that success to its strong product proposition and the fact that it chooses to partner with quality, trusted names in the industry like Mila.

Mila’s Managing Director Richard Gyde added: “The ProSecure hinge is an ongoing success story. It has already won significant market share in PVC-U doors and now, with the launch of this new composite door version, it looks set to do the same in that sector as well.

“It’s a product which perfectly demonstrates many of Mila’s strengths – it’s cleverly designed and engineered with tangible ben-efits for both the fabricator and the installer and it is backed by the best service and supply chain in the industry.”

Titan AF windows is very smooth regardless of how many locking points there are.

Each AF window includes a Sash Lift Roller to ensure the sash locates into the frame smoothly and cor-rectly. This, coupled with the KoPiBo cams, reduces wear and tear and ensures that the user enjoys easy operation even after many years.

The concealed hinge solution features Axxent 24+ hinge components. Axxent 24+’s low stack height helps overcome air gap clearance issues but does not adversely affect the hinge’s strength. Sashes weighing up to 150Kg can be accommodated with-out the need for extra support. This ability to carry heavier sashes with minimal hardware is becoming more desirable with the emergence of triple glazing and as designers favour larger, therefore heavier, win-dows to bring added light into buildings.

Fitting of Axxent 24+ is further speeded up by the fact that no jigs are required. The hinges simply locate into the frame corners.

VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson says ‘Titan AF has been tried and tested in continental Europe before Siegenia developed the tilt before turn, or TBT, version used here in the UK. The Axxent 24+ hinges are a brand new development. Their load bearing capabilities and compact size, along with the fact that no jigs are required to fit them are sure to gain a lot of admirers amongst fabricators, installers and specifi-ers.

‘All three of our tilt and turn hardware partners have introduced exciting new systems over the last few months. We’ve built our business on supplying our customers with the best solutions for their needs and this is clearly demonstrated by the top quality TBT options that we can offer.’

More information on the VBH range can be obtained by calling 01634 263300.

Hardware specialist VBH now stocks Titan AF, the latest tilt and turn system from Siegenia.

Titan AF is available in both surface fit and ‘Axxent 24+’ concealed hinge options, and has versions to suit PVCu, timber and aluminium windows with sash weights of up to 150Kg.

Titan AF has been designed with the manufacturer, installer and end user in mind. The hardware clamps into the Eurogroove prior to screw fixing and VBH advises that the ‘click-on’ coupling feature makes the hardware extremely easy to fit. The security level can be easily upgraded from ‘basic’ to RC-1, RC-2 or PAS24 level by changing just a few components.

The system features KoPiBo roller cams that act as a standard roller cam or a mushroom cam depend-ing on the striker plate used. It is height adjustable to automatically compensate for clearance tolerances and expansion and contraction in the window frame caused by dramatic temperature fluctuations. effectively fabricate either a lever/lever or a lever/pad system from just one lock.”

The high specification door lock is a practical alter-native to traditional twin spindle locks which require a longer back plate for all types of operation. It incorpo-rates a standard 92mm centre, which accommodates both long and short back plate handles and either a solid spindle to create a lever/lever lock or a split spindle to create a lever/pad lock. This solution is a versatile alternative to traditional twin spindle locks which need to use a longer back plate regardless of the operation of the lock.

Like the rest of the Excalibur range, the Excalibur split spindle door lock has been developed to provide exceptional levels of security for the homeowner. Benefitting from three hooks, two steel anti-lift bolts and three rollers, it is designed to provide trouble-free performance.

For convenience, the Excalibur split spindle door lock is easily extendable. It utilises a gearbox which is sprung to overcome the need for costly sprung handle sets. A wide choice of components, including a one piece keep, individual hook roller and centre hook latch and roller keeps, is also available.

An added advantage of the door lock for installers is its flexibility after installation; the operation of the door set can easily be altered by simply changing the handles and spindles without having to change the lock or re-route the door sash.

Kenrick has marked a successful first year since the launch of its Excalibur split spindle door lock. Demand for this versatile product has exceeded anticipated levels and the Excalibur split spindle door lock now accounts for 20% of Kenrick’s door lock sales.

Steve Williams, Sales and Marketing Director at Kenrick, said: “We are delighted with how well our split spindle door lock has performed in the first 12 months since its launch. We developed this product in response to customer demand for a product that delivers guaranteed speed, simplicity and versatility to the fabricator, without compromising on performance. Several top hardware distributors and fabricators have added the lock to their range of products and are reaping the benefits of being able to quickly and cost

Trojan’s door hardware products that meet the requirements of Document Q are the Patriot Plus 3D High Security Door Hinge, the 3D High Security Composite Door Hinge, the PAS 24 Stainless Steel

Document Q, the latest addition to building regulations that cov-ers security, came into force on 1 October 2015 and left many hardware products non-compliant. But Trojan’s core product range already met the requirements, meaning that for Trojan fabricators and installers it was business as usual.

Trojan’s window hardware prod-ucts that meet the requirements of Document Q are the Stallion

Letter Plate and the TS007 2* Stainless Steel Door Handle.

Document Q states that all win-dows and doors installed in new dwellings (that means new builds and conversions) need to conform to PAS 24:2012. Full details of the requirements and how they affect fabricators and installers have been laid out in a leaflet that Tro-jan has prepared. Breaking every best practice guideline in the book, Mila has instructed all of its sales managers to lift and carry their new window samples just by the handle.

It’s not any ordinary handle though, but the new Mila GRIP espag handle in ABS, and Mila wants to provide fabricators and installers with real life evidence of just how strong it really is.

Managing Director Richard Gyde says: “Obviously, we don’t usually

advise customers to lift windows using just the handle when they’re out on site, but we know that it often does happen and we’re absolutely confident that our GRIP handle can cope with it.

“In fact, we got the idea from one of our biggest customers who challenged us to prove GRIP’s strength by carrying a window up a ladder with just the handle as some of their installers do. We went one better and got our Test Centre engineers to carry a 1000mm x 800mm 25kg window up and down a ladder over and over again using just the handle. Of course, at the end, there were no signs of damage or weakness.”

Obviously, GRIP has been exten-sively performance tested before launch to more than 60kg and has been successfully cycle tested

Getting To Grips With Grip50,000 times. Mila confidently states that it outperforms not only similar priced aluminium handles in terms of strength but also more expensive zinc, but also thinks that, for lots of customers, seeing will be believing.

Richard Gyde adds: “We’ve invest-ed a huge amount in making GRIP green by reducing the embod-ied carbon, and we’ve included innovations such as colour options and an anti-microbial finish, but we certainly haven’t compromised on strength or performance, and we’re on a mission to prove that.”

The GRIP handle will be on dis-play at the FIT show with another demonstration of strength which Mila says will surprise a few visi-tors.

for protection against the latest forms of attack, and can be used as part of a PAS 24 door set. This enables fabricators and installers to comply with Approved Docu-ment Q, requiring that all residen-tial doors meet or exceed British Standard PAS 24.

For maximum security, the cylin-der pull is recommended for use alongside Yale’s 1 Star Superior cylinder or the 3 Star Platinum cyl-inder, which launches soon.

The external pull has a sacrificial break point which snaps under attack, meaning it cannot be re-moved from the door and cylinder remains protected.

Yale Door and Window Solutions has launched a TS007 2 Star cylinder pull, designed to improve traditional door style aesthetics and provide superior security.

The stainless steel, finger pull escutcheon is suitable for use on timber and composite doors and can help to create an authentic ‘period feel’, visually replicating the look of a traditional Yale rim latch, when used in conjunction with other door hardware.

The cylinder pull is 2 Star accred-ited, meeting the TS007 standard

Available in chrome, brass and satin chrome finishes, the 2 Star cylinder pull is Yale branded on both the internal and external escutcheon. This recognised mark of trust signifies superior strength and provides a visual deterrent to potential thieves.

The cylinder pull is backed by Yale’s 10 year guarantee and has been tested to 500 hours of natu-ral salt spray to deliver extensive corrosion resistance, meeting the BS EN1670 standard.

THE MASTER FITTER CHALLENGE SPONSORED BY FENSA

In addition, FENSA is sponsoring one of the main features of The FIT Show, The Master Fitter Challenge competition. This year it is taking place on the first two days of the show in the Atrium/Foyer area of the Tel-ford Exhibition Centre. The entry date for companies has now passed with the finalists being selected in the next few weeks. The winners will be announced at The FIT Show Gala Dinner on the evening of Wednesday 13th April.

The FIT Show promises to be yet another special event in the industry’s calendar. A showpiece of the industry’s finest companies and the GGF Group is de-lighted to be involved across many of the key features of this award winning exhibition.

“Anyone who wants to sell to more fabricators, install-ers or trade counters should see us first on stand 381, Hall 3,” says Neil Parsonson, Database Manager of Windowbase. “We have over 14,000 verified records covering the window market, and we’re bringing them all to the FIT Show – where you can try our online database for free!”

Neil comments: “Most companies waste time and effort chasing ‘leads’ which turn out to be ‘duds’. If you’re trying to call, mail or email companies that have gone away, ceased trading or changed owner-ship it’s simply money down the drain. Accurate and up-to-date information is invaluable.”

Windowbase is 100% dedicated to the UK’s window market; the only one to have been researching the in-dustry continuously for over 25 years. Its in-house in-terviewers make thousands of calls a year to validate contact details, products and system information to ensure the data it provide is as accurate and current as it’s possible to be. Windowbase provides names, addresses, phone and fax numbers and e-mail ad-dresses along with details of company size, products and systems used and activities.

“The information can easily be tailored to require-ments,” explains Neil. “So if you only want to target Synseal installers in the Midlands, or VEKA fabrica-tors in the North, we can provide that information and that’s all you pay for. Our data is great for direct marketing by email, post, fax or phone and you can even add information to our records that no one else can see.”

Windowbase gives companies the data they need to win new customers and grow sales, cost-effectively.

Neil adds: “Come and see us on Stand 381 at the FIT Show, and find out for yourself how easy it is to get started and access our data securely online.”

“Fit Show is perfectly timed. We’ve got a fantastic range of roof systems to reveal at the show, which really demonstrates our capability to deliver against every conceivable style of extension. We made a very firm commitment to our network a couple of years ago that we would deliver a roof system to meet every style and budget of home extension – and that’s what we’ve achieved. The product will be on display on the Sealco stand – Stand 214 – in the latest aluminium-clad timber win-dow from AluWood, enabling visitors to see first-hand the possibilities of the new technology. Represent-atives from Yale DWS will be on stand to explain the benefits of the product.

“The Yale product is newly developed and never before seen in public,” comments Derek Malcolm, Managing Director of Sealco. “It’s a real coup to be able to launch such an innovative solution with the eyes of the UK glazing industry on us.”

For Yale DWS, Sealco was an obvious choice to be its partner for the product. “We’ve always had a really strong relationship with Sealco and indeed we have previously launched products into the UK with Sealco’s assistance. We feel that Sealco have the specialist market knowledge in this area of opening solutions and are delighted to be partnering with them for this important product launch,” explains Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director from Yale.

changing individual ones.

Ben Brocklesby, Sales and Marketing Director at Origin, comments: “We have designed the brand new Sale Safe system in house with the absolute intention of making the lives of our trade agents much easier. The simplicity in design and streamline of processes means that the faster they can place orders, the more projects can be completed quickly and accurately, allowing installers to improve their overall customer service and satisfaction levels. We feel that the FIT Show is the perfect place to demonstrate our system, allowing visitors to get hands-on, using the technol-ogy for themselves. We very much look forward to meeting everyone once the doors open.”

In addition to demonstrating Sale Safe, Origin will be showcasing its renowned window system, the only window in the industry to feature an internally and externally flush casement. Uniquely designed so the sash sits perfectly in line with the frame, and with no overlapping profile, it ensures a smart and elegant appearance. The clean and simple design therefore lends itself to all home styles including traditional townhouses, new builds and projects under strict planning regulations.

The Origin Window also offers an optional upgrade of space age technology, Aerogel, for out of this world thermal efficiency, making it capable of achieving an energy rating of A++.

Origin has exclusivity on the revolutionary Aerogel, and this ground-breaking material is used for insu-lation in the likes of spacecraft’s and spacesuits. Aerogel is completely unique in its properties, not af-fected by age or moisture, and provides major energy savings for the life of a home. When combined with the Origin Window, it can boost the window’s thermal efficiency by up to 67 per cent to achieve a certified U-Value of 0.9.

Visitors to the Origin stand (235) will also be able to experience Origin’s entire new ranges of made-to-measure blinds. The new blind types include Lutron electric roller blinds, Pleated and Roman blinds amongst others, ensuring that Origin’s network of trade agent’s are able to offer the ultimate soft fur-nishing solutions for additional profit making opportu-nities.

Of course, the industry-favourite and firmly estab-lished Origin bi-folding doors will be on display. Cleverly designed, beautifully made and exquisitely finished, the entire Origin Home range will come to-gether to be showcased in a quite frankly show-stop-ping stand.

For further information on Origin, please visit www.origin-global.com

Origin will be presenting its revolutionary new quota-tion and ordering system, Sale Safe, for the first time at the FIT Show 2016. The British manufacturer of bi-folding doors and windows will also unveil its new innovative ranges of blind systems, previously unseen in the UK.

Designed to drastically streamline the process of quot-ing, ordering and general admin, the new Sale Safe software can create projects, send prices and order products instantly. As a result, Origin’s network of trade agents will spend less time chasing quotes and filing, leading to increased capacity, improved custom-er service levels and closing deals like never before.

Origin will use the FIT Show, held at The Telford International Centre on 12- 14April 2016, to demon-strate the simplicity of this new ordering process, with attendees encouraged to experience it first-hand.

In an industry where a quote or order can take up to seven days, due to the manual inputting required, Sale Safe removes the quotation waiting time, as prices can be retrieved instantly. The administrative element of Sale Safe has also been hugely improved in com-parison to other ordering systems. Instead of multiple order numbers for multiple products for one customer, projects are now created pertaining to one homeown-er, and an unlimited amount of doors and windows can be assigned to this one project.

On top of the instantaneous and administrative ben-efits, Sale Safe offers distinct advantages to users. These include an intelligent cascade system, which allows an overall project preference, such as colour, to be changed and pushed through to all products in a project at the click of a button instead of manually

Members of the Synseal technical department will be demonstrating the ease and practicality of installing Celsius Solid Roof with a series of hands-on workshops each day.

A full range of residential doors will also be on display including Masterdor Benchmark (GRP), Craftsman (timber) and Precision (wrapped timber), which provide a “good,

better, best” range of desirable door solutions to drive value-adding retail sales. Alongside these will be the highly successful WarmCore “warm aluminium” fold-ing sliding door which delivers low U-values of 1.4 W/m2K using 28mm double glass or 1.0 W/m2K using 44mm triple glass.

Synseal’s knowledgeable sales team will also be on hand to provide expert guidance on best product selection including one of the largest selections of PVC-U extrusions offerings available in the UK mar-ket with no less than four full systems on offer (Shield, Synergy, Legend and Sheerframe). When coupled with the full range of Evolve fabricated products such as vertical sliding windows, patio doors and PVC-U bi-fold, not forgetting the K2 and Global roofing systems and the ever popular, market leading Celsi-us glass, Synseal aim to demonstrate that they have something for everyone attending the show.

“We look forward to presentingthe sheer diversity of Synseal Group window, door and roofing product solutions at the FIT Show with a focus on true inno-vation and ease of fitting,” comments Group Sales & Marketing Director Andy Jones. “Synseal has the broadest product range and we are successful be-cause we deliver well-engineered products that make real commercial sense to fabricators and installers.”

Synseal Group will be returning to Telford on 12th-14th April in style, with the largest stand at FIT Show 2016.

The company has launched a series of innovative products and group operations have grown signif-icantly since the inaugural FIT Show back in 2013. Synseal’s display on stand 348 in Hall 3 at this year’s event will give visitors a chance to get fully updated and appraise the sheer breadth and quality of Syn-seal’s product range.

Synseal will be launching several new products at the show, which are sure to be of interest to fabricators and installers alike. These include the much anticipat-ed WarmCore aluminium window system, the Mas-terdor solid timber Craftsman door range and a sneak preview of the stunning new thermally broken Lantern roof, all of which have been design engineered for today’s demanding consumer.

In fact several installations have been carried out for customers that immediately took to the striking appearance and per-formance of Lumi. The FIT Show provides installers throughout the UK with the opportunity to consider the potential for customers in their areas.

Lumi is beautiful but for installers, it is practical too. Lumi windows may be re-glazed on site if required and in a practical demonstration visitors to the stand will be invited to carry out the task themselves. Other Lumi styles will include two doors, a 5-leaf bi-fold in addition to a large Lumi casement designed to show the product at its best.

Apeer has been manufacturing composite doors for more than 12 years now, becoming a pioneer in the sector in the process. New at The FIT Show will be the EsiFit slab in two styles for larger fabricators to consider as a genuine alternative, together with four Apeer70 doorsets.

“This April will be the first opportunity for us to show Lumi to the UK window trade and that is very excit-ing for us,” said Asa McGillian, Managing Director of Apeer and the inventor of the Lumi window. “We have been looking forward to showing Lumi to a wider audience of window and door professionals who can consider the product for their own areas. We will learn a lot from this process,” he added.

This FIT Show Apeer will have the opportunity to talk to the professional window community for the first time about its Award-Winning Lumi window system, which was described by the G Awards judges as ‘A product that truly re-invents the window’ when they voted it ‘New Product of the Year’ recently.

Lumi is a complete range of customisable, matching frameless windows and bi-folding, patio and residen-tial doors. The triple glazed units bonded to an internal GRP subframe give tremendous strength and the uninterrupted, edge-to-edge glazing looks amazing, especially on a wide span of bi-folding doors.

Taking the theme of a ‘Brighter Future’, Phoenix Doors will be sharing its parent company’s MASCO UK Window Group Stand 216 at the FIT Show 2016 where the emphasis will very much be on colour.

The PVC door panel and GRP composite door manufacturer will be showcasing a variety of com-posite door styles from its com-prehensive ranges, spearheaded by its high-performance, Meridian Door. It will also be launching a new electronic lock – the Winkhaus AV2E keyless entry system – for the Phoenix composite doors.

Haydon Statham, Phoenix Doors’ Sales Director comments: “Giv-en the high demand for coloured doors, we have responded by investing in new enlarged paint spraying facilities to satisfy grow-ing demand in this area. Proof of our ability will be displayed on the stand – look out for our eye-catch-

ing door!”

To cope with forecast demand for coloured doors throughout 2016 and beyond, Phoenix has more than doubled the capacity of its paint facility and its dedicated spraying team. The most popular shades will be held in stock ensur-ing doors can be supplied on a five to seven-day lead time.

With sales of the 70mm dou-ble-rebated Meridian growing month-on-month, Haydon says the FIT Show provides an ideal opportunity to visitors to see the product up close and to better understand what makes it so special.

Also on display will be an ex-panded choice of outer-frames, offering a major advantage in colour-matching sidelights and toplights with homeowners’ exist-ing windows.

Haydon adds: “Colour is a grow-ing trend and one that really appeals to consumers who want to make an individual statement. As a complete door solution com-pany for the retail replacement market, being able to offer all the colours of the rainbow – and more – will help installers to ‘open more doors’ and gain more customers.”

Foams, Haffner and Business Micros – who came out on top unbeaten in all their games – all fielding players, GQA boss and proud Barnsley fan Mick Clayton is now taking names and putting together a schedule of games.

“When it comes to the FIT Show football I always get a lot of calls,” says Mick. “It seems to be one of the highlights on the FIT Show calendar.

“We’ve got fantastic facilities complete with referees with up to six teams playing each other once and the top two competing in the final.”

With a presentation taking place in the clubhouse after the tournament complete with food and drink, winners will receive a trophy each – and of course bragging rights until the next FIT Show – and will be announced as winners at the FIT Show Gala Dinner.

Exhibiting at the FIT Show and fancy signing up? The tourna-ment will take place Monday April 11th at the AFC Telford Goalzone facility. Contact Mick Clayton of GQA [email protected] to register your interest.

Joe Hague, Managing Director, Promac Group, said: “Foils, colours and specialist clad products are gaining market share year on year as consumer choice wid-ens. “U-R-B-A-N and Graf Synergy have developed machinery that produce furniture like quality that compliments high production factories but in a grow-ing and still demanding market, the efficiencies in manufacture that are key. “The FIT Show is a chance to find out just what we and our machinery can do for fabricators and glass processors.” The Promac Group supplies the UK’s most extensive range of PVC-U, aluminium and glass processing machinery and represent amongst others FOM Industries, BDM, Forel and Pertici. The Composite Wood Company is giving away the £20,000 garden room that will be seen at the FIT Show. The company is show-casing its new range of insulated garden rooms on Stand AT35, and visitors have the opportunity to win the exact example on display.

The competition is running via the company’s Twitter and Facebook feed. Follow the link to the survey to fill in three questions – what would you use the garden room for; which essential item would you keep in it; and why should you win the garden room.

To enter the competition, visit the Composite Wood Company’s so-cial media feeds or take the survey directly at: https://www.survey-monkey.co.uk/r/compositewood-gardenroom

The winner will then chosen by a team of judges including FIT Show director Matthew Glover, and will be announced on the stand on the final day of the exhibition.

The launch of the garden room represents a significance advance in the use of wood plastic com-posite (WPC) material, which has already generated interest for

decking, fencing and balustrades.

The design incorporates 70mm of insulation between two panels of WPC material – as well as a fixed panel, insulated roof and Syn-seal-profile doors and windows in PVC or Warmcore. This means the garden room has that ‘timber’ look inside and outside but with an add-ed degree of thermal protection, so that the building can be used as a summerhouse, home office, ‘man cave’ or gym – in fact, whatever you want it to be.

“Our philosophy is to deliver new composite solutions that will fire

the imagination of homeowners looking to transform their gar-dens. That’s why we’re launching our new range of fully insulated garden rooms manufactured in WPC,” explains Tony Pratt, Sales Director of The Composite Wood Company.

“Window installers are always hungry for the next big thing in home improvements that will add value to their portfolio – and here it is. We’re so excited that we’re giving it away! Come and take a look at what you could win on stand AT35, but don’t forget to enter the competition.”

years – end-users are now a lot more knowledge-able and want windows and doors in an extensive range of colour options and finishes, allowing them to shape their own personal ‘grand design’.

“While most systems companies will only provide gaskets in standard colours, usually white, black and grey, at ExtrudaSeal, we can offer them in any RAL colour to match the aluminium frames, giving our fabricator-clients a USP that really makes their offer stand out in the market place. It is this attention to detail that is helping their installer-customers appeal to the increasingly style-conscious consumers,” add-ed Paul.

The exhibition is also a good opportunity for the company to showcase its complex and innovative product portfolio that includes the exclusive Tri-Fin® wood pile, the result of a collaboration with Spanish extrusion firm TecSeal. Designed to improve weather tightness on uPVC, aluminium and timber windows and doors, the Tri-Fin®’s three-finned design allows for up to a 25% reduction in air infiltration compared with a single fin, and is only available in the UK through ExtrudaSeal.

“If you’re an aluminium fabricator interested in the lat-est innovations in weather sealing solutions, or want to reduce manufacturing costs without compromising the quality of your windows and doors, or if you’re simply looking to add more value to your own range of products, come speak to the ExtrudaSeal team on stand 342 at the FIT Show in April to find out how we can help,” concluded Paul.

National supplier of gaskets for the aluminium window and door market, ExtrudaSeal, will be exhibiting its comprehensive variety of flexible extrusions at the FIT Show in April, on stand 342.

Part of the Euroseal Group, ExtrudaSeal has dis-tinguished itself as one of the leading providers of gaskets, currently supplying approximately half the aluminium window and door market with innovative sealing solutions at very competitive prices – and, as sales director Paul James explains, the company’s FIT Show presence is yet another chance to promote the many benefits of dealing directly with a gasket manu-facturer.

“The FIT Show is a great opportunity to show alumini-um fabricators just how much they can save by buying weather seals directly from ExtrudaSeal, rather than as part of a package deal, with their profile systems. By cutting out the middleman and dealing directly with us, we estimate fabricators can save anywhere be-tween 30 and 50%.”

“What’s more, as a specialised extrusions provider, we’re much more attuned to shifting market trends. Demand for colour has exploded over the past few

Year-on-year visitor registration figures are running at more than double those recorded for a sim-ilar period in the build up to the 2014 FIT Show. Figures are also way ahead of the Award winning launch show that took place in 2013, adding to the excitement that we are heading for a record

event when it takes place in April.

Adding to the optimism are the website statistics: almost 30% more users are accessing The FIT Show website compared with a corresponding period for 2014, with an exceptionally

low bounce rate (the number of visitors that leave a site with-out interacting with it) of just 2.29%.

“The reasons for such excep-tional figures can be manifold,” said The FIT Show’s Matthew Glover. “The obvious factors of a record number of exhibitors coupled with hundreds of new products and services expect-ed to be revealed for the first time are an obvious pull. And of course a positive outlook in the market is also contributing.”

Window industry software spe-cialist, Windowlink, will be hitting April’s FIT show to promote its best-in-class design, sales and pricing applications.

Operating from stand 356 at the Telford industry exhibition, the Gloucester-based developer will use laptops and tablets to show installers how its intuitive software can help them improve conversion rates, upsell more effectively, and convey trustwor-thiness and professionalism to end-users.

Windowlink’s main applications, Vector for conservatories and orangeries and Focus for win-dows and doors, allow installers to create impressive 3D visualis-ations of their products, enabling

the homeowners to see exactly what they’re buying. A pricing module allows both installers and end-users to keep track of how much the proposed project would cost – a feature that is dra-matically improving the relation-ship between salespeople and their prospect customers.

“We’ve exhibited at the FIT Show on both previous occasions,” said Windowlink MD, Mark Dudley. “For us, it’s the perfect opportunity to show off our products – we always find that when installers get to see Vec-tor and Focus in action, they’re very quickly won over by how easy they are to use, and the difference they can make to their sales.”

“Really, what we offer is a versa-tile, engaging twenty-first cen-tury alternative to the traditional sales brochure. We designed our applications to be about ‘show-ing rather than telling’. Vector and Focus take what would otherwise be a one-sided sales pitch and turn it into a collab-oration between customer and installer. They immediately bring a sense of trust and transparen-cy to the proceedings – the price of the proposed improvements is always visible, and both par-ties can work together to design a project that meets the home-owner’s budget.”

“What’s more, they provide abundant opportunities for upselling. When a consumer can actually see that hardware upgrade, or that more luxurious window or door configuration applied to their own property, it’s much more likely to lead to a sale.”

Windowlink’s FIT stand won’t just be about showcasing exist-ing products, however – Mark hints at a number of new inno-vations set to be unveiled at the three-day event. “We’ve got a few surprises up our sleeve – you’ll have to come and find us at stand 365 in April to find out more, but popcorn and refresh-ments are a clear definite!”

The big news for REHAU cus-tomers is that AGILA is all about doors – and specifically specialist door solutions which give REHAU fabricators and installers lots of new sales opportunities.

The first product to be announced is a multi-pane AGILA sliding door with modern, contemporary aes-thetics and attractive slim sight-lines to let more light in and give

better views out.

It comes with all of the usual REHAU guarantees of easy man-ufacture, fast installation and a premium quality finish, as well as a few clever innovations to set it apart from the competition.

There will be other exciting ele-ments from the AGILA range on the FIT show stand as well – all showcasing, as the name sug-gests, the ‘agility’ and ‘versatility’ of the range.

Alongside the new products, there will also be some great news for REHAU Authorised Partners with the launch of a new online marketing portal called 360°Per-formance,developed directly in response to customer research and feedback.

360°Performanceoffers fully per-sonalised support materials, and visitors to the stand will be able to try it out for themselves, and see how easy it is to create their own literature, advertisements and showroom displays, making the most of their connections with REHAU but allowing them to pro-mote their own brand as well.

Suitable for any timber, aluminium and composite double door combination, the Winkhaus Grand En-trance range is a perfect fit for applications such as French door sets, or modern doors with an opening side panel.

“We invite fabricators and installers to our stand to see the new innovations for themselves, and dis-cover how our complex portfolio of locking solutions can help them gain a strong competitive advantage across multiple markets,” said Justin. “Visitors to our stand will also be able to see our new AV2 animation that explains in a nutshell how our most popular lock works.”

Aside from product innovations, the Winkhaus stand will also boast a ‘German hospitality’ theme, with traditional German beer and sausages.

“Being at the show means more than a business opportunity for us. It is also a chance for the window and door industry to catch up, discuss trends and share experiences, so we’ll make sure the Winkhaus stand provides a relaxed atmosphere for customers and companies interested in learning more about our products and services to enjoy,” explained Justin.

There are even more reasons to drop by the Winkhaus stand at the Show, with visitors being given the chance to win one of three iPad Mini devices, just perfect to visualise the company’s brand new web-site – another exciting development to be revealed in April. Packed full of information on Winkhaus’ range of products and services, the new website will pro-vide fabricators and installers with a comprehensive online resource.

Engineering innovation, beer and the popular ‘wurst’ are arguably three of the most well-known German trademarks, so it’s no surprise leading hardware spe-cialist, Winkhaus, has chosen to showcase them at the FIT Show in April.

Exhibiting on stand 244, Winkhaus will be presenting its newest innovation, the autoLock AV3, alongside the company’s other market leading locking solutions, in-cluding the very successful AV2 Family, and the Grand Entrance collection of high security multipoint locks.

Featuring the new ‘daytime latch’ function, the AV3 multipoint autolock delivers added practicality for the end-user, by allowing the door to be opened from the outside without a key when activated. This is particu-larly useful when instant access is needed over a short period of time, for example when the homeowner is carrying in shopping bags.

June 2014, but the strength of the door supplier’s offering was not fully apparent until Andy had chance to compare what the market had to offer.

“I went to The FIT Show to see three or four companies that I had researched, but I also picked up more as I walked around,” Andy said. “It was important because I was finalising plans for the new showroom, and I want-ed to make the most of the new site.”

Andy said he wants to see new products at an exhibition, which help him to be ahead of the game and his competitors.

Partnerships forged at previous FIT Shows have continued to flourish, long after the media storm has died down, its organ-isers have claimed, proving that the exhibition as a must for any company wanting to make the most of the recovering economy.

One such partnership is that which is shared between 2014 exhibitor IG Doors and Tam-worth-based installer Bradley Scott Windows.

IG Door’s Sales and Marketing Manager Richard Kirman and Bradley Scott Windows’ Andy Farrington were well-acquainted before the FIT Show opened in

Andy Farrington: I Liked Truedor So Much I Took The Fit Show Display!

“But I also want to see evidence of how a supplier will work with me, become my partner, and what commitment they will make to me for the longer term,” he said.

IG Doors had chosen the FIT Show as the launch pad for its brand new composite door range for the trade – Truedor – which was backed by TV architect George Clarke.

“We had such a range of peo-ple visiting our stand,” Richard Kirman said. “We had MDs and fitters and we could explain to all of them about the products and how we were going to market them.”

It was this enthusiastic approach to the show that won Bradley Scott Windows as a Truedor stockist.

“I now have the display that was on the Truedor FIT Show stand in my showroom,” Andy said. “I wanted something special for my new site, something that offered the ‘wow’ factor, and IG Doors’ Truedor gallery display was superb. I got the whole Truedor concept the minute I saw it and had to have the display too. I signed immediately.”

The relationship has burgeoned since, Richard explained. “Andy has become a centre of excel-lence for Truedor,” he said “We pass sales leads out to our trust-ed retailers and Andy is excellent at following these up. We even pass leads out to him when we don’t have an appointed installer, in the knowledge that he will deal with them professionally.”

More than 175 further exhibitors can be seen at The Fabricator Installer Trade (FIT) Show which takes place at The International Centre Telford on the 12th, 13th and 14th April 2016. Entry is free but avoid the queues by register-ing early at www.fitshow.co.uk.

This year’s FIT Show sees Eurocell focus in on four of its most popu-lar products and systems across two stands – one dedicated to its high-performance, high aesthetic window and door systems; and another for its popular Equinox tiled conservatory roofs and Sky-pod roof lanterns.

Stand AT13 is hosting the un-doubted star of the show in the form of the new Modus S, a mechanically jointed flush sash casement window, which com-bines modern materials with a truly traditional appearance. This achievement is possible thanks to precision-engineered mouldings inside the frame which remove the need for the tell-tale diagonal cor-ner welds – a characteristic give-away of standard PVC-U windows.

Also on the stand is Aspect: Eurocell’s innovative panoramic bi-fold door system. With ultra slim frames and over 30 unique features, many of them patented, Aspect is the first and only sys-tem of any material of its kind to gain BBA approval. Furthermore, it brings additional peace of mind – especially in the Part Q Building Regulations context – as it has also Secured by Design status (subject to fabricator accredita-tion).

Following recent reports of a strange glowing phenomenon at Titon’s manufacturing facilities, further details have finally come to light. Although the original whis-tle-blower has been uncontactable since the information was leaked in January, undercover investigations appear to reveal the truth…

The mysterious ‘AREA 24’ appears to be Titon’s extensive hi-tech product development and test-ing laboratory – a unit which was established two years ago and has been fully operational for some time. The facility’s primary func-tion is the testing and launching of hardware products to achieve PAS24 security levels on timber, PVCu and composite aluminium windows and doors.

PAS24 is recognised through-out the industry as the minimum standard by which compliance

with Approved Document Q (Se-curity) of the Building Regulations, England & Wales is measuring windows and doors.

New sources reveal Titon has been inviting customers to visit ‘AREA 24’ to trial its hardware on their windows and doors to see if the combination of products will surpass PAS24 on specific profile designs. There are also reportedly

durability and other testing capa-bilities available deep within the high security area, overseen by a vastly experienced team of tech-nical experts. If this is indeed the case, the facility – combined with a surprisingly extensive range of hardware for windows and doors – looks set to further strengthen Titon’s position within the industry.

To silence the rumours sur-rounding ‘AREA 24’ once and for all, Titon has confirmed it will be demonstrating some of the product capabilities mentioned previously at the FIT Show in April 2016. Visitors to stand no. 326 will have the opportunity to see behind the scenes and question the Titon personnel behind the development of the latest high quality security products. Visi-tors will need to keep their eyes peeled, before the company once again secures its hardware portfo-lio behind locked doors!

The team at G-15 Installer of the Year The Window Company (Contracts) are already making detailed plans for their visit to this year’s FIT Show.

As well as scouring the floor plan and the show guide well in ad-vance to identify the stands they most want to visit, they’ve come up with an innovative way of making sure that they don’t miss any of the people they really want to meet.

Founder and Chairman David Thornton will be visiting with Directors Rob Petre and Martin Thornton and they have put to-gether a mini profile of their busi-ness to leave behind on stands which interest them.

Rob said: “Sometimes the very person you want to talk to is tied up with someone else or they’re just not on the stand that day. Rather than just get our badge scanned or walk away and leave our business card, we thought we’d go one step further and leave behind this proper profile so that exhibitors can see what we’re all about and whether they’d like

to do business with us.

“All of our individual email addresses are on there as well so that potential suppliers even know which of us to contact for refurbishment or new build work. We’re always focused on efficiency and we think this will be the best way to make our two days at the show as efficient and worthwhile as possible.”

The Window Company (Con-tracts) has visited both of the previous FIT shows and identi-fied valuable new suppliers at each of them.

UPVC and aluminium fabricator, Sternfenster, has been contract-ed to provide windows and doors to a major North London redevel-opment project.

The Lincoln-based company has supplied 760 Residence 9 windows and 750 Deceuninck doors to the Dollis Valley residen-tial development, an ambitious regeneration project that aims to transform a run-down area of Barnet into what developer Countryside Properties PLC calls “London’s first 21st Century garden suburb”. Comprising 631 new private and rented houses and apartments, the project will also include parks, green spac-es, and a variety of community facilities.

Having delivered £540,000 worth of windows and doors for the first phase of the project, Sternfen-ster has now been awarded the £400,000 contract for phase two, set to begin on-site this Spring, and run for an estimated 15 months. The five-phase project is due to be completed in 2020.

“We’re delighted to have been contracted for such a sensitively designed, high-quality regener-ation project”, said Sternfenster managing director, Mike Parczuk. “For us, it’s incredibly reward-ing – we’re seeing our sustained investment in increasing capacity come to fruition, allowing us to take on major commercial con-tracts such as this one, while maintaining our lead times and continuing to improve on the

service we provide to our trade customers.

“We’re especially pleased that with this project, the client has benefitted from our state-of-the-art StyleLine Deceuninck doors and Residence 9 windows, fea-turing attractive seamless corner welds, rather than the unsightly corner groove that’s commonly found in PVC-U frames. As a manufacturing method, StyleLine Residence 9 is also up to 32% less expensive than the tradition-al mechanical jointing, while still delivering the high-end aesthetic required,” said Mike. He contin-ued: “It’s just one of the many benefits that we’re able to pass down the line to our trade and commercial customers, all the way through to the end-users,” concluded Mike.

Sternfenster offers a compre-hensive choice of high-end frames, from its award-nom-inated, exclusive timber-look range, StyleLine, to mechani-cally jointed Residence 9, Smart Aluminium windows and doors, including bi-folds in any colour and configuration, and Spectus vertical sliders.

Teamwork, good communi-cations and the application of traditional skills all came to the fore when more than 200 dated and decaying timber porches need replacing in Alexander Park in Manchester’s Moss Side.

PVC-U had been the natural choice for the replacement, offer-ing greater thermal efficiency as well as significantly lower main-tenance. Profile 22 was chosen as frame system, not only for its product specification but also the well-known benefits of working with its Approved Window Con-tractor scheme.

However, the entire project would have been a non-starter but for a little inspiration and traditional expertise, as Gary Wylde, MD of the chosen scheme member, Select Windows, explained: “At first it was thought it couldn’t be done with PVC-U because of possible problems lining up with existing roofs and gutters. But Tony Wood, one of our co-found-ers, with over 35 years’ industry experience, cut and re-welded the guttering to a purpose-made angle. Without his expertise, the project might never have got off the ground in the first place.”

The original porches had been part of a major redevelopment of the estate in 1994 but ongoing repair and repainting costs, as well as rotting frames and inse-cure doors made replacement inevitable. Initially, Profile 22 was asked to provide advice to City South Manchester Housing Trust, as the two have worked close-ly in the past. Profile 22 got on board with CAD drawings and a specification that was put out to tender through the Approved Window Contractors network. Select Windows was chosen, via main contractor Mears Group PLC.

During the contract, every ele-ment of the chain paid tribute to every other for good communi-

cations and co-operation that led to a smooth, efficient team effort with a completely complaint-free outcome. City South Building Surveyor Nick Moulding said: “It has all run remarkably smoothly. The product and fitting teams have been excellent. My thanks to the operatives as they have fitted 202 porches and we have received no complaints at all from the residents.

“Select attended every property on time and returned immediately to any where there was a query or problem. Many residents have mentioned how good the porch-es look and they are pleased with the added security from the windows and doors.”

Walsall-based Select Windows,

as a Profile 22 Approved Com-mercial Manufacturer, was able to access details of the origi-nal tender from the Profile 22’s tender portal, as it had done many times to gain work on previous occasions. In just under six months, Select installed 202 porches using Profile 22 doors and frames with 28mm double glazing.

Select has been in business 35 years and recently reached a milestone of producing 1,000 units a week. Around 55% of its work is commercial and 15% re-tail, with the remainder as trade supply to other installers.

A new structural glazing system from GLASSOLUTIONS has been specified for Hiscox’s new land-mark underwriting and customer experience centre in York, part of the insurance company’s £19 mil-lion investment to create its largest office outside London.

The VS-1 mullion-only system from GLASSOLUTIONS eliminates the

need for horizontal framing mem-bers, enabling Make Architects to achieve the clean viewing lines on the curved atrium screen which forms a key feature of the new building.

Make Architects’ brief was to design a bespoke office which reflects the character of the Hiscox business and delivers high-quality

contemporary design within York’s rich architectural heritage. Locat-ed adjacent to the Grade II* listed early-17th Century Black Swan public house, The Hiscox Building will establish a new focal point for the Hungate area of the city.

The spectacular four-storey build-ing will house up to 500 employ-ees in a dynamic working envi-ronment with open, flexible floor space. The light airy interior effect is created by the extensive use of the VS-1 curtain walling. This combines with a cantilevered con-crete frame and undulating woven brickwork façade to provide a workspace which fosters creativity and collaboration.

Work on site began in 2014. UK-based GLASSOLUTIONS, part of the international Saint-Gobain Group, supplied and installed the curtain walling structure for main contractor BAM Construction as part of a £1.8 million contract.

VS-1, which has also been used successfully on the Sky Believe in Better building in London, is a new type of curtain wall – a mullion only system where the glass is held away from the mullion so the glass wall visually ‘floats’. In this project, the mullions are fixed back directly to primary structural columns.

VS-1’s highly engineered simplicity delivers remarkable aesthetics for architects, developers and build-ing owners. It is the only curtain wall system where the floating glass façade is held away from the mullion without the use of obtrusive bolt fixings or transoms. Its relative simplicity reduces risk of component failure, improves constructability and reduces costs of programme delays in both con-struction and post-construction phases.

curtain wall, a bespoke structurally bonded rooflight and GLASSOLU-TIONS’ patented VS-1 glazing sys-tem to form the main atria screen and terrace parapet.

The VS-1 system façade is ar-ticulated with both convex and concave curved insulated units, the largest of which is 2.0m wide x 4.2m high. The argon filled lam-inated heat strengthened units have high performance coatings to limit solar gain, achieving g-values as low as 0.34. To meet internal thermal comfort targets, glass units with centre pane u-values of 1.1 W/m2K have been used. Com-bined with the thermally efficient frames, this creates screens with weighted average U-values of 1.3 W/m2K.

Says Make Architects’ Jason Parker, partner and the project lead architect: “The building has been designed to complement York’s rich architectural heritage whilst providing a new home for Hiscox in the heart of the city. It has been a fantastic collaboration between York, Hiscox, the designers and contractors – each contributing to a building which conveys a sense of joy from both inside and out. The incorporation of VS-1 into the design creates a light and airy space and reinforces the openness and the friendly face of Hiscox.”

Steve Langan, Managing Director, Hiscox UK and Europe, said: “The brief we gave the architects was to create something that represents a progressive addition to the long history of York – something that taps into the history of the Hun-gate site and is sympathetic to the surrounding listed buildings, while using cutting-edge architectural, design and working practices. I want it to be a centre that drives innovation and a place that both Hiscox and York can be extremely proud of for many years to come.”

Financial services company Legal and General’s property in Lotus Park in Staines consists of four two-storey office buildings and provides 79,000 sq ft of prime office accommodation.

The buildings date from the 1980s and were in need of refurbish-ment. The scale and prominence of the buildings combined with the exacting nature of the specifica-tion meant that only experienced contractors and suppliers would have the necessary credentials to undertake the work.

Specialist glass manufacturer and supplier Float Glass Industries had the track record and credentials to be able to supply and install the glazing elements of the refur-bishment and, after a competitive tender process, was awarded the contract.

Steve Ferrie, FGI’s Commercial Sales Director, said, “We have been working with the main build-ing envelope contractor for over

five years so could provide ample evidence of our suitability and expertise to meet all the require-ments of this complex project.”

The project, worth around £150,000 to Float Glass Indus-tries, took over four months to complete. It required high perfor-mance thermal and solar glass, security toughened glass, struc-tured units using Schuco retention pockets and ceramic painted units. FGI manufactured all the products in-house, including painting the ceramic units using its roller painting machine.

Steve Ferrie commented, “We are used to supplying large contracts on time and on budget. But despite our familiarity with such work, we maintain a meticulous attention to detail to ensure we get every element right and meet or exceed every manufacturing standard.”

A new primary school in Derby has become the first completed project in the UK to feature the new ther-mally-efficient PURe® windows from leading fenestration designer and manufacturer Senior Architec-tural Systems.

The innovative new aluminium window system, which is the first on the UK market to benefit from an enhanced thermal barrier man-ufactured from expanded polyure-thane foam (PUR), has been spec-ified for use on the new Carlyle Infant School in Derby. Working alongside main contractor Bowmer & Kirkland and Bond Bryan archi-tects, Senior’s PURe® casement windows were installed by leading fabricator Allied Glazing.

Key to the specification of Senior’s PURe® windows was the system’s high thermal performance that not only gives exceptionally low U-val-ues but also has the potential to dramatically improve the building’s overall carbon calculations.

Carl Broadhurst, managing direc-

tor of Allied Glazing added: “Allied Glazing is extremely proud to be the first installer to work with the new PURe® window system and we hope that the staff and pupils of Carlyle Infant School are as pleased with the finished results as we are. With any new product there is always going to be some uncertainty about how easy it will be to work with and how well it will perform but we are extremely im-pressed with the PURe® window system, particularly as it combines ease of fabrication with a techni-cally advanced construction and exceptional thermal performance. We liaised closely with Senior’s technical team throughout the contract, developing a much stronger working relationship in the process, and we are looking forward to working with the new PURe® system on future con-tracts.”

Providing a modern and inspira-tional learning environment for some 180 pupils, the new Carlyle Infant School in Derby is one of six to be rebuilt as part of the Edu-

cation Funding Agency’s (EFA) Priority Schools Programme.

The new patent-pending PURe® window range is the first in the UK to benefit from an enhanced ther-mal barrier manufactured from ex-panded polyurethane foam (PUR). Traditionally used in cladding and insulation products, the innovative use of PUR as a thermal barrier in windows gives the PURe® system the potential to achieve U-val-ues as low as 0.71w/m2k when calculated as a commercial CEN standard window.

As well as helping to cut the operational carbon emissions by making the building easier and more cost-effective to heat, the unique construction of the PURe® system can also contrib-ute to reducing the calculations of embodied carbon which looks at the energy used in the manufac-ture, transportation, assembly and deconstruction of construction materials. Not only is the PURe® system manufactured from alu-minium, which offers ‘cradle to cradle’ recycling, but the PUR thermal barrier can be re-used as fillers for other products with no requirement for landfill.

With a generic Green Guide rating of ‘A’ for use in commercial projects and a life expectancy in excess of 40 years, Senior’s most recent product innovation has also been designed to meet the PassivHaus standard cycle and exceed the current requirements of Part L of the Building Regula-tions.

Having already experienced the reliability and accuracy of Kombi-matec machinery after purchas-ing an Electric Double Mitre Saw from them almost 10 years ago, when UPVC doors and windows manufacturer KwikFrames need-ed a new one it was only right the Hull-based business called on the acclaimed machinery specialists once again.

“It was an easy decision to make,” says KwikFrames Managing Director Paul Martin when discuss-ing the upgrade of their DGS530 Electronic Double Mitre Saw. “The previous Kombimatec saw we had was excellent. It never caused us any issues and was ultimately very reliable.”

So why the upgrade? According to Paul it was just a case of staying ahead of the curve with a refresh. “It’s been in our factory for almost 10 years. If you’d had a car for 10 years with 200,000 miles on the clock you’d be thinking about a change, wouldn’t you?

CHARITY

CMS Window Systems has kicked off a year of supporting a wide range of charities with a £1000 donation to The Cottage Family Centre, which provides vital servic-es to families in Fife.

The donation marks the start of CMS’s year of extensive charity support marking the business’s 10-year anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, CMS has com-mitted to supporting ten charities dedicated to improving the lives of people in ten communities in which the business operates. The firm will make ten donations of £1000 each to causes nominated by its most valued customers.

Kirkcaldy’s Cottage Family Centre is the first charity to benefit from a donation by CMS after being nom-

inated by Fife Council. Established in 1987, the Centre gives support to families with pre-school children who are vulnerable to factors such as poverty, unemployment and health issues. As well as running playgroups and mother-and-ba-by sessions, the Cottage Family Centre provides other invaluable services for the Kirkcaldy and wider community such as adult education classes, parenting skills workshops, and children’s coun-selling services.

Pauline Buchan, the Centre’s Ser-vices Manager, welcomed CMS’s contribution to the centre: “We’d like to express our gratitude to CMS for their very generous dona-tion to the Cottage Family Centre. Local families who use the centre rely on the assistance we make

available to them – CMS’s contri-bution will help us develop initia-tives which complement, support and extend our main services to vulnerable families.”

Founded in 2006 and with man-ufacturing and recycling facilities located in North Lanarkshire and Fife, CMS has a sound reputation as a business with a strong social conscience. Its commitment to corporate social responsibility ranges from its extensive sus-tainability policies to its focus on creating local employment oppor-tunities and its support of com-munity causes.

In addition to its longstanding relationships with a number of charities CMS actively encour-ages its employees to help local charities through volunteering and fundraising. In November last year, CMS employees raised over £6500 to fund the Lanarkshire Beatson radiotherapy treatment centre by generously giving up part of their wages every week.

Andy Kerr, CMS’s Managing Director, said: “The last decade has seen a great deal of positive change for CMS. Since 2006, we’ve grown to be a leading window manufacturing business with a workforce of over 245 and a £35m annual turnover, and we’re keen to be responsible and give back to our community where we can. Our market-lead-ing sustainability and recycling policies, as well as our appren-ticeship scheme to promote local employment, all demonstrate our commitment to helping our com-munities thrive, and we feel that our ‘ten charities for ten years’ programme for 2016 will be a great way to contribute. We hope that the Cottage Family Centre is able to use our donation to con-tinue their great work helping the families of Fife.”

WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016 97

Warwick North West, one of the region’s biggest and most re-spected trade fabricators, recent-ly served as a main sponsor for a charity abseil held at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral.

The event, which sought to raise money for the Multiple System Atrophy Trust, saw famous faces including Geordie Shore star and I’m a Celebrity… winner Vicky

Pattison navigate their way down the world’s fifth largest cathedral sporting T-shirts emblazoned with the Warwick North West logo.

Multiple system atrophy is a rare neurological condition caused by the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain, leading to problems with movement, balance, and other bodily functions. The MSA Trust seeks to support sufferers

of the disease, their families and carers, while funding research in the hope of finding the cause for and eventually curing MSA.

“We were delighted to sponsor the event,” commented War-wick North West director Greg Johnson. “MSA is a rare and little-understood condition, and the Trust is a fantastic charity of-fering a huge amount of support to sufferers of the disease. We’re proud to support their work, and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Queen of the celebrity jungle descending the iconic Anglican Cathedral in one of our T-shirts.”

Based in Bootle, Liverpool, Warwick North West is a leading fabricator of premium-quali-ty PVCu windows and doors. Known for its expertise in the more specialist products such as bi-fold doors and vertical slid-ers, Warwick has reached new heights of success since the release of its exclusive Innolux range. This isn’t the first time Warwick has connected with a famous face – the fabricator recently teamed up with local celebrity Ricky Tomlinson to pro-mote their Innolux bi-fold door. CHARITY

Staff at CMS Window Systems have raised more than £6500 for the new Lanarkshire Beatson by generous-ly giving up part of their wages every week during November and donating the total to Beatson Cancer Charity.

The fundraising effort for Beatson Cancer Charity is part of a £500,000 appeal to help fund a wide range of patient and family support services, quiet areas and outdoor spaces at the new £22 million Lanarkshire Beatson radiotherapy treatment centre at Monklands General Hospital in Airdrie, which opened in Novem-ber. This will deliver treatments to 1,200 people from across the Lanarkshire region every year, the area in which most CMS employees and their families live.

The initiative was wholeheartedly backed by the CMS workforce spanning all the company’s departments, including production staff on the fabrication lines and the installation teams. Their valuable individual contri-butions were matched pound for pound by the com-pany too, as it further supported the efforts of its staff.

Driving the fundraising campaign was CMS apprentice Rachel Clark, whose grandfather has been one of the first patients to benefit from the state of the art radio-therapy treatment centre. Rachel says, “The Lanark-shire Beatson provides superb treatment and care as my grandfather and my family have seen first-hand, so it has been fantastic to give something back and get involved in raising money for the facility. The response from my colleagues has been tremendous, and I’m sure everyone wishes Beatson Cancer Charity the very best of luck in their future fundraising efforts.”

Additionally, the fundraising campaign has given Rachel the opportunity to demonstrate her excellent organisational skills, which have helped to propel her into the finals of the Lanarkshire Business Excellence Awards 2016 – Apprentice of the Year.

CMS Business Systems Director, Martin McCrimmon was also keen for the company to get behind the fundraising initiative as part of their commitment to vital charitable causes which benefit the local com-munity. He says, “We never lose sight of our position as an integral part of our local community – many of our staff live locally and it’s great to be able to play a part in helping to fund first rate local facilities like the Lanarkshire Beatson. The response from our team has been extremely generous so I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in the fundrais-ing effort.”

Charlene Elliott, Head of Development at Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “We are incredibly grateful to CMS Window Systems’ employees for the huge support they have demonstrated by so generous-ly donating part of their wages to our fundraising appeal. This is a truly inspiring way to raise money for the world class radiotherapy treatment centre.

“The money raised from the appeal will go towards funding a whole range of patient and family support services like massage and Reiki which help people cope with pain, insomnia and anxiety. It will also help to create a contemporary, non-clinical environment with relaxing indoor and outdoor spaces and quieter areas which allow patients to share worries or dis-cuss treatment plans with staff. We hope this fan-tastic fundraising initiative will inspire so many more Lanarkshire businesses to dig deep and support Beatson Cancer Charity.”

Employing more than 245 people at its HQ and man-ufacturing facility at Castlecary near Cumbernauld, as well as an operation in Fife, CMS Window Systems is one of Scotland’s fastest growing manufacturers. The company manufactures and installs windows, doors and curtain walling for the widest range of housing and public and commercial buildings across Scotland and the north of England, with external wall insulation (EWI) and cladding now also installed.

Beatson Cancer Charity desperately needs to keep raising funds to provide the best possible support to cancer patients and families attending the Lanark-shire Beatson. For more information about the La-narkshire Beatson Business Community Appeal visit http://lanarkshirebeatsonbusinessappeal.org/
