The Knox Community Health Coalition shares short articles with CHRHS each month on substance use issues. I will share these with you in an effort to keep some of these issues on our collective radar. Thanks, Principal Carlson. Monthly Substance Use Prevention Update: Prescription Drugs – What Can I Do As A Parent?

• Follow your physician’s orders and set clear rules – Make sure your teen uses prescription drugs only as directed by a medical provider and follows instructions for over-the-counter products carefully.

• Monitor prescription and OTC drug access and quantities – Take note of how many pills are in a bottle, and keep track of refills. This goes for your own medication, as well as prescribed medication for your teen and other family members of your household.

• Be a good role model – Examine your own behavior to ensure you set a good example. Avoid sharing your drugs and always follow your medical provider’s instructions.

• Safeguard your current medications and dispose of outdated medications properly – Unused prescription drugs should be disposed of through a take back program. For more information about Take Back programs in Maine, visit http://umaine.edu/safemeddisposal/

• Ask your friends and parents of your child’s friends to do the same – Make sure your friends and relatives (especially grandparents) also know about the risks and encourage them to regularly monitor their own medicine cabinets.

To learn more, go to maineparents.net To find out how you can become involved locally, contact Wanda Gamage-Wyman, Substance Use Prevention Specialist, Knox County Community Health Coalition – 236.6313, Ext. 2; [email protected] Knox County Community Health Coalition provides substance use prevention services in Knox and Waldo Counties, and is a division of the Penobscot Bay YMCA.

The Camden Hills Regional High School VPA Student of the Month for March is senior, Tatum Dowd. She has been a standout contributor to the CHRHS music and theater programs since her freshman year. Her passion for the performing arts has manifested itself in four years packed full of acting, directing, and singing. Tatum has taken advantage of every theatrical opportunity during the last four years. She has had key roles in each of our musical productions – Pugsley (The Addams Family), a member of the nun ensemble (Sister Act), Daniela (In the Heights), and Charity (Anything Goes). She has been part of the winter play each of her four years as well, earning a Maine Drama Festival All-Festival Cast award in 2016 for her portrayal of Templeton in Charlotte’s Web. This year she has written the script (You and Mia) and is the student director for the Camden Hills production. Tatum has also been in each of our spring plays since freshman year including last year’s hilarious performance as Belinda in Noises Off. In May she will be playing Cassie in the production of Neil Simon’s Rumors A member of the CHRHS Chorale, Women’s Choir, and Chamber Singers, she attended District III Choirs for three years. She is also a member and leader of the female acapella group Fortissima and has been a frequent soloist at the annual Dessert Cabaret and the VPA Arts Night. In 2017, Tatum directed a very successful production of Lin Manuel Miranda’s 21 Chump Street. She is a role model for her peers – and a leader, both within and outside the classroom. She is dedicated performer, director, and a team player who is an asset to every production. Although at this point, she is unsure whether she will major in music or theater in college, Tatum still plans to be involved in the performing arts, joining student vocal groups and participating in extra-curricular theatrical productions. The performing arts have been a huge part of her high school career. Her advice to underclassmen is to do whatever you are passionate about, and do it 110%. Create opportunities for yourself and appreciate those who find opportunities for you. Work hard because if you’re doing what you love, you’ll be able to look back on it with pride.

CHRHS Choruses to perform at Lewiston's Basilica On March 25th, the Camden Hills Regional HS Chorale, Chamber Singers and Treble Choir will perform a variety of a cappella works, perfect for the church setting. Included in the program will be Biebl's "Ave Maria," Durufle's "Ubi Caritas," "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" (arr. J. David Moore), the traditional spiritual "Keep Your Lamps" (arr. Rexroth), and Karl Jenkins' "Adiemus." The ensembles will be directed by Kimberly Murphy with assistant direction by student teachers Eben Wight and Saphrona Stetson. Camden Hills Regional HS has garnered a reputation for choral excellence, with many students chosen to participate each year in the local district festivals, Maine All State festivals, and ACDA All Eastern and National Choirs. Under the direction of Kimberly Murphy, the ensembles have consistently won Gold and Silver awards at National Adjudicated Festivals. In 2017, the choirs traveled to New York City to participate in the NYC WorldStrides Heritage Festival, and had the chance to perform at the Riverside Cathedral. That performance was a highlight for the ensembles, and culminated in each ensemble winning a First Place, Gold Award and the Sweepstakes Award. The students are thankful and excited to be able to perform in the sacred space of The Basilica on March 25th at 7:00PM.

As part of a community outreach project, musicians from Camden Hills Regional HS will be presenting an evening of music at Nativity Lutheran Church on Friday, March 15th at 6:30 PM. Organized by student teacher, Saphrona Stetson, the students will present a variety of contemporary and original works - ranging from complex piano solos, jazz trios, and Broadway show stoppers. Featured students will include Isabelle Olson, Caleb Edwards, Abby Milner, Allie Balla, Brad Watts, Elaine Landry, Lucas Marriner-Ward, Annabel Parker, Macy Pushaw, Sydney Lytton, Myles Kelley and the Extension Chords. Members of Nativity will provide refreshments and donations taken at the door will benefit the AIO Backpack Program. The program will be about an hour in length, and will be an informal evening of music and desserts. Hope you can join us on the 15th!

Blind Date with a Book in the CHILLS Library! One of our Student Library Advisory Committee members saw this idea online and thought we should try it in the CHILLS Library. The group determined that it would be a great themed display for Valentine’s Day. Student members chose some of their favorite books from the stacks, got to work thinking of a few keywords that would get potential readers intrigued, then wrapped them for the display.

Later, an English class stopped by to browse and five readers chose a “date” with a mystery book! According to the teacher, “two of the five decided to take their blind date on a second date. One LOVES his book and hugs it to his chest when we check in about it.” That’s a “happily ever after” pair!

New and RecommendedOne of the most important parts of a high school library is the diversity in the collection - diversity in authors and characters, genres, subject matter, reading levels, and more. The high school library should be a reflection of our learning community. When teachers or students recommend a book for purchase, that recommendation counts as much as a review or an award sticker. This is one way we cultivate a vibrant collection that meets our community’s needs and keeps them reading! The following titles are just a few of these recommendations that arrived in our most recent shipment and are now ready to check out!

Exciting happenings at Mid-Coast School of Technology: The new mural was approved by the school board. The mural has been in development for nearly two years and is entirely student designed. Some of these students include, Matthew Shaw (lead designer, OHS), Alexys Schaeffer (lead 3D modeler, CHRHS), and Jette Keene (texture designer, MVHS). They were able to complete this project with the support of our consulting artist and team mentor Katharine Cartwright.

Winter sports have now wrapped up except for our hockey team who is still competing in the MPA playoffs! Overall, we had a great season with many individual and team awards. This year our wrestling team has been very successful competing in Class A. The team won the KVAC held at Cony High school and the following weekend won the Class A North Regional meet. The regional meet was held here at CHRHS. It was an extremely successful event with great team effort from our boosters and CH staff. Even though our wrestling team has won the KVAC and regional meet many times before in our school’s history this was the first time that we have won both events in Class A! In the state meet the team finished in third place. Senior wrestler Noah Lang went over the 200 wins mark during the season, which is the most in our school’s history. Noah then went on to win the state championship in his weight class, as did junior Kristina Kelly in the girls’ state champion meet. This also happened to be Kristina’s first year as a wrestler! Noah Lang, Dawson Allen and Eric Andrews ------ all earned a spot to compete in the New England Meet. This year our Girls’ Varsity Basketball team finished strong and secured the 8th place tourney position in the Northern Maine Regional games. Our girls played a very competitive game against the number one team Skowhegan who came into the tournament 18-0. Senior, Kassie Krul was selected to the KVAC first team and junior, Kaylyn Krul was selected for the second team. For the boys’ team sophomore Jeremy Fraser was selected to the KVAC second team. Both the girls and the boys’ teams look to be very competitive next season. This year we also started a Unified basketball team. It has been a lot of fun for the eighteen students that have been part of the inaugural team. The team typically practices two days a week during flex time and we have hosted two home games and will finish our season at Belfast on March 5th. The Camden Hills Ice Hockey team has had a great year. The team finished the regular season in fourth place with an 11-7 overall record. Our team defeated Hampden in over time (5-4) in the quarterfinal game. Senior, Bryce Tyler has been selected as this year’s Hobey Baker Award recipient which exemplifies the ideals that “Character Builds Excellence” within the high school hockey community. The team is busy preparing for the semi-final game which will take place at Colby College on Saturday, March 2nd against the Old Town / Orono team. This winter our Alpine and Nordic ski teams had many opportunities to engage in a lot of competitions. Unlike so many years in the past, our teams were actually able to get nearly every one of their meets in due to favorable travel conditions. On the Nordic side of things Grace Wrona continues to be a standout racer in the girls state competition. Alpine team members Jessica Mann and Caellen Roberts did very well in the state competition. They were both selected to compete in the Alpine Maine High School shootout!

Both Girls and Boys’ swim teams had successful seasons. During the dual meet season both teams produced winning records of 6-3. Thanks to the students' committed in-season training they all had a fantastic championship season. The girls were the KVAC champions. The boys finished in third place at the KVAC meet. Head Coach Hodding Carter was named KVAC Class B Girls Coach of the Year. Sophomore Phoebe Root and Senior Connor O'Farrell were individual KVAC champs in one race each. The boys 400 free relay team consisting of Connor Hedstrom (SR), Angus Carter (SO), CharlieCooper (SR) and Connor O'Farrell (SR) were also KVAC champs in their event. At the Class B State Championship, both teams performed well with the Girls finishing 6th overall and the boys 7th. We had more girls qualify and compete at States than in any previous state meet within recent memory. Springs sports are just around the corner. There will be a meeting for all students and coaches right after school on Wednesday March 6th in the gym. For those students playing baseball or softball your season starts Monday March 18th. All other springs sports will start on Monday March 25th. It’s not too late to sign up for those that wish to participate. Just visit the CHRHS athletic web page for the sign up link.
