CUFFCO 96 sts. Divide sts on 4 needles asfoll: 32 sts on Needle 1, 32 sts onNeedle 2, and 16 sts each on Needles3 and 4. Place marker (pm) and join forworking in the rnd, being careful not totwist sts; rnd begins on the side of theleg and not at center back. These beautiful knee-highs feature acable pattern that weaves gently backand forth like a drunken sailor wanderingback to his ship. The pattern is an adapta-tion of the Slack Line or Drunken-SailorCable pattern from Barbara Walker’s ASecond Treasury of Knitting Patterns(Schoolhouse Press, 1998), which cleverlyuses decreases and increases to tilt thecable. Finished Size 7" foot circumference and81⁄2" long from back of heel to tip of toe;9" calf circumference unstretched (willstretch to a maximum of 111⁄2"); 131⁄2" longfrom top of cuff to beg of heel flap, and 9"long from tip of toe to back of heel. Socksshown fit women’s U.S. shoe sizes 6 to 7;instructions for adjusting foot length aregiven in the pattern.Yarn Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock (80%superwash wool, 20% nylon; 215 yd[196 yd]/56 g): #2ns manzanita (mediumplum), 3 skeins. Yarn amount is sufficientfor foot lengths up to 10"; for larger sizes,purchase an extra skein.Needles Size 1 (2.5 mm): set of 5 double-pointed (dpn). Drunken Cable

Step 1: Bring threaded needlethrough front stitch as if to purland leave stitch on needle.

Step 2: Bring threaded needlethrough back stitch as if to knitand leave stitch on needle.

Step 3: Bring threaded needlethrough same front stitch as if to knit and slip this stitch offneedle. Bring threaded needle through next front stitch asif to purl and leave stitch on needle.

Step 4: Bring threaded needle through first back stitch as if topurl (as illustrated), slip this stitch off, bring needle throughnext back stitch as if to knit, leave this stitch on needle.

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until no stitches remain on needles.

on each needle. Slip sts from Needles1 and 2 onto a single dpn for sole offoot, then slip sts from Needles 3 and 4onto another single dpn for top of foot.Break yarn, leaving a 14" tail. With tail threaded on a tapestry needle, graft toe tog using Kitchener st (seebelow).

FINISHINGWith yarn threaded on a tapestry needle,weave in loose ends. Lay socks flat toblock or use sock blockers.
