WIND RIVER OPENSTACK

Product Overview

In the virtualized world, networks have gained the ability to scale up or down as capacity

requires, yet still meet the same timing and performance requirements of traditional plat-

forms. In the pursuit of the highest-performance and most cost-effective cloud infrastruc-

ture, OpenStack is a crucial project that has gained large-scale industry adoption, bringing

a rich set of features to the cloud and improving network functions virtualization (NFV) per-

formance for all sorts of cloud environments.

Wind River® has adapted OpenStack to deliver the advantages of open source with less risk

and costs. In order to better manage this scalable and flexible stack, Wind River OpenStack

is configured as a Yocto Project layer within the Yocto Project’s meta-cloud-services layer.

Enhancements around quality, export assurance, maintenance, and IP disclosures, as well

as the reliability of the Wind River global support network, make Wind River OpenStack an

ideal choice for customers who want to achieve NFV in a controlled and safe manner.

INTELLIGENT CLOUD ORCHESTRATION

Wind River OpenStack is an add-on to Wind River Linux that provides the resources and

tools required to build and deploy a high-performance cloud operating system that scales

and manages small and large virtualized data centers alike. It addresses the requirements

of networking customers who need an orchestration middleware that intelligently migrates

and balances virtual machines and network load. By providing common application pro-

gramming interfaces (APIs), Wind River OpenStack enables customers to build an intel-

ligent agent (orchestrator) to manage virtual machines that extend their NFV capabilities,

and deploy advanced cloud products and services on top of that platform.

Wind River OpenStack implements OpenStack on top of the Wind River Linux platform to

provide a unique cloud management and virtualized run-time environment. The control-

ler nodes running Wind River OpenStack controller services manage the cloud infrastruc-

ture and provide administration interfaces to clients over the management network. The

compute services running on the compute nodes connect the controller nodes over the

internal management network. Figure 2 provides an architectural overview of Wind River

OpenStack technology.

WIND RIVER OPENSTACK

BENEFITS

Some of the top reasons that companies use Wind River OpenStack and commercial Linux

include:

• Lower cost of ownership: Wind River OpenStack reduces the high technical and legal

costs associated with maintaining a do-it-yourself OpenStack project.

• Predictable delivery of high-quality software: Using a commercial turnkey solution

eliminates the risks associated with open source project development so you can meet

your deliverables schedule.

• Security assurance and worldwide customer support: You can rely on Wind River

investment in each Wind River Linux product to ensure robust, ongoing management of

patches and security vulnerabilities as they appear.

• Maintenance updates: Using a commercial solution makes it easier to keep up-to-speed

with open source innovation.

• Yocto Project compatibility: Wind River contributed more than two-thirds of the com-

mits to the Yocto Project meta-cloud services, making Yocto Project Linux compatible

with OpenStack.

• IP assurance and export compliance: The Wind River solutions reduce the risk of

breaching license clauses.
