Wind Band Music in Latvia
19th Century
• Church musicians, court music, city musicians
• Andrejs Jurjāns and Jāzeps Vītols – first professional Latvian musicians educated in Russia, 2nd half of 19th century
• Two teachers’ seminars (schools for teachers) in Valka and Irlava – important role for music development
19th Century
• 1884 – Wind band in Aluksne City by Volunteer Fire Association
• During 1890s – Wind band “Hions” (conductor Drekslers) existed until the First World War
• Rubber factory band in Riga, (cond. Muračinskis)–15 musicians, mostly women
• Wind Band of Russian army (cond. Buhardts)
• Before the 1st World War small bands operated almost all major Latvian regions, cities (10 – 25 musicians)

• During 1920th, 30th active work done by JurisJurjans, Kārlis Ozols. Also wind orchestras of the Firefighters’ unions emerge (usually 12 – 14 musicians)
• Bands in all major cities, regions (10 – 25 musicians)
1945 - 1980Folk Art Centre (1948) – government organization for
amateur groups (also wind bands) in Latvia

The public procurement for the development of the wind bands for the period 2002 - 2012 is - 70 new
compositions of different difficulty levels and genres by the Latvian composers, covering both the original
and arranged music.
