Women of SubstanceCelebrating International Women’s Day

On Friday evening Mayor Margot Smith welcomed a large group of around 200 women from across the shire to the Barwon Park mansion, previously the home of a very significant Victorian woman.

The function, organised by Surf Coast Shire Council, was to mark International Women’s Day which is annually held to celebrate women’s achievements throughout history and across nations. Usually held on March 8th, the function has been moved forward to coincide with the final days of the Love, Desire and Riches exhibition. After reminding guests that the Surf Coast Council currently has a majority of female councilors, she introduced the host, Mrs Elisabeth Austin aka Shirley Power, who came to welcome everyone to her home.

Reminding the group that she had come from modest beginnings, Mrs Austin told how her life was divided into three periods. The first 25 years on a farm

in Somerset, England and migration to Australia with her brother to live on a farm at Winchelsea.

The next 25 years saw marriage to Thomas Austin, raising a family of 11 children and increasing their wealth, property holding and social standing largely through grazing of sheep. Six months after moving into the new mansion around 1870, Thomas died and after years of grieving, her final years became a period of continuing social involvement and philanthropy with outstanding memorials to the period being the Austin Hospital in Melbourne and the Austin Homes in South Geelong.

Both resulted from her concern for the less well off and disadvantaged in the community which continued till her death in 1910.

After hearing the ‘Chinese whispers’ of what was or was not happening... thought might be worth a call to Surf Coast Shire Manager Engineering Services, Peter McLean, to get the record set straight.

And, as always, Peter was happy to accommodate with the set of plans for the redeveloped entry. See below the plans for the new entrance including a new ramp and steps up to the new entrance.

These works are scheduled to start mid March and will be completed in April.

Dear Editor

Just wanting to say a big thank you to Kaye Batson our Maternal Child Health Nurse for organising the Water Awareness Day last Thursday 26th February. The initiative was developed to provide water awareness for toddlers with a growing amount of toddler drownings being recorded around the country. It was a fabulous day to help our children become water wise and another great way to utilise our wonderful local pool facilities. We really are fortunate to have such great people, organisations and facilities in our town. Thanks again Kaye and thanks to our local families for supporting this day.

Dear Editor

My partner and I recently went to the new Winch Indian Cafe next to the Black pearl, and I must say it was a great experience. The staff were so friendly and always had a smile. We ordered The Veggie Curry and the Lamb Korma. The Mix of sweet and spicy was perfect and filled us up to the point where we couldn’t eat another bite.

I Would definitely recommend everyone to try the food at this beautiful cafe at least once. I Know My partner and I Will definitely we going back.

Danielle Bader.

Dear Editor

I would like to reassure your readers the Growing Winchelsea project does not propose changes to long vehicle parking at the Main Street Shopping Centre. There appears to be uncertainty about this given a letter to editor in the Winchelsea Star on Tuesday 24th February 2015.

When we sought feedback on the Winchelsea ‘Town High Street’ project, it was clear the community did not support the removal of long vehicle parking from the Main Street Shopping Centre.

Council has heeded these comments. We are still gathering broader feedback however the recommendation in Growing Winchelsea is that no change be made to

the car park – this includes the retention of long vehicle parking in the centre strip.

Growing Winchelsea recommends beautification works of the Main Street shopping strip. This would be limited to themed furniture, lighting and landscaping.

The plan now on exhibition retains the existing car park at the front of the Main Street shops. In the accompanying text we note that if the footpath was widened the car park would have to be reconfigured. This point is included only to guide discussion as some people have previously called for a wider footpath.

Council welcomes community input and feedback on the draft Growing

Winchelsea report and is currently seeking submissions from the general public. The report is available at www.growingwinchelsea.com.au. The closing date for submissions is 5.00pm, Friday 27 March 2015.

Post a written submission at: Growing Winchelsea C/- Sally Conway – Project Manager Surf Coast Shire Council PO Box 350, Torquay VIC 3228

Or email to [email protected]

Yours sincerely Kate Sullivan Director Planning Surf Coast Shire

Letters to the Editor

A new musical based on the book of Revelation in the bible will be prepared over the coming weeks with a combined choir in Winchelsea.

The musical “The 7 Stars and 7 Candlesticks” is based on the 7 letters to the churches in Asia written be John in the first century. The music varies from rock,

to ballad, and even baroque, with the style of music following the sometimes strange apocalyptic language of the text. The musical is set for a full choir, several soloists, 2 narrators, and instrumental backing.

Rehearsals will start this coming Thursday at 7.30pm in the Uniting Church hall. The

first rehearsal will be a run-through the whole work to see how it all works. Those interested can ring John Bumford, who has written the music, on 0419 535490. Many will remember the wonderful presentation of “And the Angel Said...”in the Globe Theatre last Christmas.

Last Tuesday evening Local fire brigades were paged to a forest fire in Coal Mine Road, Winchelsea South. On arrival a scrub fire was burning slowly around the area, up Stringy Bark trunks, and into the branches of the trees.

Brigade members found clear evidence of trees struck by lightning within the burnt out area. Also another tree outside the area was split open by suspected lightning.

The last lightning in the area was the previous Saturday evening, with associated rain in the area. It is suspected that the fire lay dormant until Tuesday evening when the scrub had dried out sufficiently to allow the fire to take hold of the drying bush.

This is a warning to everyone to be vigilant for many days following an electrical storm.

Wurdale brigade was supported by Winchelsea, Modewarre and Deans Marsh brigades.

An independent assessment of public libraries described the GRLC as a “highly efficient high-performing public library” which displays the “desired combination of very high service levels and usage delivered below average industry cost”.

The report, which compares Victoria’s 47 public library services on a number of benchmarking indicators found Geelong Regional Library Corporation ranked number one based on the 10 key indicators of service and collections quality, efficiency and participation.

Chair of the Geelong Regional Library Corporation, Cr Andy Richards, said the results of the independent report were truly outstanding.

“Our library service is the best in the State. We have never compromised in our mission to achieve excellence and this has shown through in these incredible results” Cr Richards says.

GRLC Board Member, Surf Coast Shire’s Cr Libby Coker, is delighted by the results.

“These outstanding results and recognition are well-deserved. Library members and supporters in the Shire will already be aware of the tremendous services and facilities on offer and have an appreciation of the role of the library corporation in supporting reading, learning and community,” Cr Coker said.

Surf Coast Shire Mayor and recent GRLC Board Member Cr Margot Smith said the library corporation played a significant role in the shire.

“The Torquay Branch Library and the mobile library service are much more than the sum of their parts – they are a great way for people to get together and meet new people and discover new ideas,” said Cr Smith.

The Geelong Regional Library Corporation is funded by four member councils – the Borough of Queenscliffe, City of Greater Geelong, Golden Plains Shire and the Surf Coast Shire – and serves a regional population of 273,000.

From the Burrow

Dear Editor. The following may be of interest to your readers. Digging out the pith from a recently lopped dead 6ft. diam. Gum tree stump, we came across a hard lump of soil embedded with an old spoon and knife. We wondered how long they have been there! Pictures shows lump of soil dug up about a foot below the pith pictured. Regards, Jean Johnson

Psst...Want to learn a secret? Want to reverse the effects of the aging process? It’s a funny concept but stick with me. Ever met someone in their 50’s but they looked like they were in their 60’s? Or have you ever met someone in their 60’s but looked 10 years younger? Most of us abuse our bodies so badly that we can literally age faster. Let’s look at this a little deeper. Imagine a 50 year old lady who has smoked most of her life and is often depressed. She drinks every night and has takeaway every week. She doesn’t exercise and has low back pain that comes and goes. We know she was born 50 years ago but what about her physiological age? Much older right. Let’s assume her body is 60 years physiologically. The lady came in and we got rid of her low back pain and showed her ways to stop recreating it, we taught her strategies on how to deal with

stress, how to eat healthily and how to successfully exercise. A year goes by and she is now 51 years old. But what about her body’s physiological age? Clearly she is healthier now even though she is older. She has reversed the effects of the again process. You can too!

Gluten FreePatricia SchroeterGluten Free Flour Mix In a re-sealable container combine : 2 cups White Rice Flour Two-thirds cup Potato Flour One-third cup Arrowroot Flour

Stir well to combine and then use as required.

Gluten Free German Cherry Almond Cake

1 cup Sugar 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon 2 Teaspoons Baking Powder 1 rounded teaspoon Xanthan gum 1/2 teaspoon Salt 185g Gluten Free plain Flour 250g cultured unsalted butter, cut into 1cm cubes 4 eggs separated 185g glace Cherries halved and rolled with a tablespoon of almond meal 50g Almond Meal

Preheat the oven to 160c Grease and line a ring cake tin.

In a large bowl add sugar, xanthan gum, salt and flour. Using hands, rub butter through these dry ingredients until well combined. Add lightly beaten egg yolks.

In a separate bowl, beat egg whites to soft peaks. Gently fold egg whites through the dry ingredient mixture then add the cherries and almond meal and fold in gently.

Pour mixture into prepared cake tin and bake in preheated oven for 35 - 45 minutes. (I suggest testing the cake after 30 minutes).

Cool in the tin on a rack for 5 minutes before turning out. When cold, store in an airtight container. It keeps well, if you can resist.

Note ; This cake can be cooked in a square tin, but I find it sinks in the middle.

Winchelsea Refugee Support GroupAt the inaugural meeting of the newest group in town last Tuesday, it was pleasing to see 13 people in attendance, with numerous apologies. This meeting, in response to the penetrating talk given by Jason Brown on the previous Sunday evening entitled “I Worked on Manus Island” gave an in depth perspective on the horrendous lives endured by those who are in detention courtesy of our government. A collection on the night raised over $250 to go towards the cost of paying for interpreters to help in Visa applications for those refugees seeking Australian residency.

Interim chair, John Bumford welcomed all, especially Linda Cusworth, an executive member of the Geelong Combined Refugee Action Group (CRAG), who gave some details of some current actions, the history of this protest movement Australia-wide in response to both government and opposition unpopular stance on this most pressing issue. A letter has been sent to Winch House requesting that the group be auspiced by them in these early stages.

Linda urged all to continue to put pressure on our local member by writing letters in support of a more humane treatment of the people involved, especially the children. She also encouraged us to join in the big Melbourne Palm Sunday Walk for Refugees. This was met with an enthusiastic response, and subsequently, a bus has been booked to go to Melbourne on Sunday March 29th to join the march. Those wishing to join can make a booking with Jenny Bowker on 0407 440306. Cost is $20, and the bus will leave St. Thomas’s Anglican Church carpark at 11.30am, and return by 7.00pm.

Another suggested activity was to host a group of refugee children to a BBQ and activities here in Winchelsea. Contact will be made with those that would benefit from such an event, and information will be sought to support in a tangible way those who have unmet needs while at school in Geelong.

The next meeting of the group will be in St. Thomas’s Church hall on Tuesday March 24th at 7.30. All welcome.

Last Wednesday 12 Men’s Shed members had a day in Melbourne spending time at the Shrine of Remembrance. Following our tour of the Shrine, we then parked near the Crown Casino, and those able to walked down to the Yarra and had lunch.

Some members had never been to the Shrine and it was a long time since some members had been in and around the city. They were amazed at how it had changed.

Thanks to “Do Care” for the bus and also capably driven again by David Loone. Thanks David.

It was a big day out for members and the 4 members across the back seat (they know who they were). Talking non stop all the way up to Melbourne and sleeping zzzz on the way home.

Planning My Life Part one When I grow up I will be rich because I’ve got golden hair. When I want to buy something I can just pull my hair and it comes out and it will be money.

I would like six bedrooms upstairs with white walls and 3 downstairs with a bathroom in every bedroom. And in the bathrooms there are waterfalls to wash your hands and to dry your hands you use a fluffy towel. When you want to have a bath or shower you will have to go underneath the waterfall.

Part Two A kitchen upstairs and then downstairs is an inside swimming pool and a spa. Outside I will have a big backyard, there will also be a tennis court and basketball court for my family and I to play on.

Also I will have a full time job being a midwife delivering new born babies! by Eve Mawson Year 3/4

Eleven community groups will receive funding as part of Council’s Small Grants Program February round. The Surf Coast Shire Small Grants Program aims to support community groups, projects and local initiatives. It is a grassroots grants program which enables community strengthening and helps to build vibrant and healthy communities in the Surf Coast.

“It’s exciting to see these community programs are able to come to life with the addition of funds from the Small Grants Program,” says Mayor, Cr Smith.

The 11 recipients are from across the Shire, with fund allocated from a pool of $22,564, and includes one program funded under the Minor Community Events Program.

“The variety of programs being funded through the program is fantastic and I am proud we are able to provide the additional support some of these groups need to achieve their goals,” Cr Smith says.

The following groups were awarded funds from the February Small Grant Program.

• Australian Marine Conservation Society for their Good Fish Project educating Surf Coast Shire chefs, seafood suppliers and the public about sustainable seafood - $5000

• Lions Club of Lorne Inc. / Lorne Aireys Inlet P12 College for a Youth Street Art Open Space program working with the College’s arts program as part of the Lions Club of Lorne 2015 Easter Art Show - $1500

• Veronica Phillips for her “Weaving Through the Marsh” community art project - $2500

• Torquay Sailing Club Inc. for a beach trailer to improve accessibility to the beach - $1000

• Coastal Pod Photography for their “Trees of the Surf Coast Region” photographic exhibition and book - $1500

• Torquay Community Men’s Shed to purchase a television and iPad for their “Singing in the Shed” program - $1064

• Karingal BacLinks to support connecting local businesses with community organisations during National Volunteer Week 2015 - $1000

• Surf Coast Energy Group to purchase a data projector to use at their events - $1000

• Bellbrae Residents Association Inc. to purchase a set of African-style drums for the Bellbrae Heartspace Drum group - $1000

• Growing Winchelsea Inc. to facilitate a series of community forums to be held in Winchelsea in 2015 - $4000

• Deans Marsh Community Cottage to assist with the promotion and marketing, as well as equipment hire, for the Deans Marsh Festival in March - $3000

A Small Grants celebration will be held in the second week of March, with certificates presented by Councillors to the grant recipients.

Chop it World’s Greatest Shave!“Today, 31 Australians will get the news they have blood cancer. That’s another 31 reasons to support the Leukaemia Foundation’s work – providing practical and emotional support to people facing the challenge of blood cancer, as well as investing in vital research to find better treatments and cures. Across Australia, 60,000 people are going through this right now.”

This is the reason David McCulloch has signed up for this year’s World’s Greatest Shave! The event raises much needed funds used to help those suffering from blood cancer and their families through the cruel epidemic as well as aiding in research. David has boldly made the decision to shave off both his hair and beard in the hope to raise $1,200 for the foundation. We are asking the community to support this cause and come and watch him shear it all off on March 15th, 3pm at the Winchelsea Tavern. Donations can be made on the day or at any time at the Winchelsea Tavern.

IPAD ClassesNow that the Christmas period is over Ipad classes are about to start again.

The program works this way:

1. The students meet as a group of up to 5, generally at the Senior Citizens Clubrooms on a Friday evening.

2. At the first session each student is given an ipad and shown the basics of operating it. If needed, they are also given a WiFi device to connect to the internet.

3. The ipad is then taken home, with the WiFi device if needed, for practice in using it. An instruction manual is provided.

4. After about a week the group gather again and any problems being experienced are sorted out. Work is done on emails, using an ipad as a camera and downloading newspapers such as the Addie. The students then go away for another week.

5. At the third session again problems are solved. New topics are different types of tablets, purchasing tablets, internet connection types, music, books and use whilst traveling.

6. If more time is needed the student can retain the ipad until the start of the new course.

If you are interested in learning how to use an ipad contact Mick O’Mara on 5267 2295 or 0427 672295

Welcome to all W.F.N.C. Supporters & Sponsors for Season 2015 ! Autumn is here, which means Footy & Netball is just around the corner. Pre-season continues, with practice matches fast approaching. The boys will be looking forward to getting much needed matchplay under their belt - let’s hope it’s not too hot for them in the first couple of hitouts.

The Club’s first home & away match is - at home - at night- against Anakie. Friday the 10th of April sees the opening round for the Blues at Eastern Reserve under lights in what should be an interesting contest. The Committee & our new Coach would love to see a real ground swell of support for The Blues in their opening endeavour to a flying start to the 2015 Season. Please keep that date in mind to come on down to Eastern Reserve - get behind the boys, & cheer for “The Mighty Blues”!

A big Thank You to parents & Committee who attended & helped on Registration

Day last Sunday. A new Statewide requirement is that all individual players (from Auskick through to Senior levels) must register on-line through the Club Website. A Sausage Sizzle was enjoyed by many, a gold coin donation was greatly appreciated.

The Club is very pleased to announce that “ The Black Pearl” already a valued sponsor of the W.F.N.C. has donated a coffee machine for the up coming season,

coupled with Joe’s fabulous blends of coffee, this is something to look forward to - on the opening night game or that first really cold snap, the Blues has “Coffee Covered”! This will please even Pricey, decent coffee !

Once again we are indebted to the Winchelsea Lions Club, their assistance on the ground gate is much appreciated, the Club has a long standing reciprocal relationship which we value very much.

There is still much to be done before the opening bounce, the W.F.N.C.Committee has generated a great deal of time & energy in the “off season” effort. We welcome any input by our supporters .

As a Club, we wish to create an atmosphere where everyone is encouraged to be the best they can be, - on & off the field We can’t wait til the opening bounce, - bring it on !

Go Blues!

Friday the 20th of Feb saw the Winchelsea Cricket Clubs annual Chinese night held at Eastern Reserve. The “Full House “ sign was put out once again as over 180 patrons enjoyed a banquet style meal that included: sweet chicken soup, fried dim sims and spring rolls, salt and pepper calamari , beef satay, honey chicken, rice, banana fritters and deep fried ice cream.

During the night senior coach Scott Kent gave a report on the season so far and aims for the rest of the season.

All 18 tables participated in the “ Table Bingo” with table 4 containing Lisa and Ron Hayward, Pam, Cookie, Bob Western, John Nanson, Kellie Newman and Tamiko Davis taking out the prize.

Four “ One Ton” draws were also done with Stacey Batson (1) , Matt Tench (5), James Stephenson (123) and David Lewis (31) the lucky winners.

The wonderful facilities were “fully” utilised all night.

And finally club president Nathan Schroeter thanked everybody for their attendance and support. The clubs sponsors were for their continued support of the club also. Nathan also recognised everybody who had helped put the night together and run the night these included: kitchen helpers the Kelly’s, Bergs and Hills. All the young waiters and waitresses who did a fantastic job! The bar staff all committee members and Marg Tench for her help with ticket sales.

Divisions 1 and 3 played at home in very humid conditions with the wind becoming stronger as the day went on. Division 1 were def by Colac Central and unfortunately the teams finals chances are over for this season. Division I were def by Colac Central winning 1/4 rinks, 84 shots to 101 shots. Division 3 def Camperdown winning 3/4 rinks, 106 shots to 78 shots. Division 4 had a bye, but many players came along to support the two who were playing. In a fortnight both Divisions 3&4 will play in the first semi final as they both finished on top of the ladder.

Last Sunday a successful Open Fours Tournament was held at the club in very warm and humid conditions.
