Former Winchelsea man, Paul Mathison (pictured top left), is currently cycling from one end of Ireland to the other for charity.Paul, the son of Winchelsea’s Stewart & Jenny Mathison, set off on the 740km cycle on Sunday which will take him from the southernmost to northernmost points of the country. Departing from Mizen Head in County Cork, he expects to arrive at his destination – Malin Head in County Donegal - 7 days later, on Saturday August 1st.
He and a few mates are taking the ‘scenic route’ along the west coast of the country, taking in some of Ireland’s most famous places like Killarney, the Cliffs of Moher, Galway & Donegal. They are riding to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland and the Irish Cancer Society, to keep fit and for some craic along the way.
You can support Paul’s cause and follow his journey at his Facebook page www.facebook.com/Mizmal740.

The Fisherman and his Wife By Vedasara Farmer - Grade 1/2
The fisherman and his wife lived in a hut by the sea.
Once the fisherman went fishing and found a talking fish who said, “I will give you wishes”.
When he got home he told his wife had everything.
She said, “Bring that fish NOW”. So the fisherman set off.
Now the fish was angry.
“WHY do you come again man?”
“Because my wife told me to come,” he said.
The fisherman came home sad, he was in a palace. “But I want a mansion NOW!” So the fisherman set off and called the fish.
He said your wife is greedy.
Your wife is going to pay so the fisherman went back and had his hut back.
The fisherman was happy but the wife was GRUMPY.

Car Drivers – What do you think of roads in South-West Victoria?ARRB (formerly the Australian Road Research Board) would like a number of drivers to complete a 60 km road circuit in the Winchelsea/Birregurra area. This will form part of a survey assessing road surfaces, condition and travel. The car used will be an automatic Subaru Outback. The circuit will take approximately 50 minutes to complete.
(The work complements a similar study recently completed with truck drivers.)
The circuit will contain road sections of different lane and shoulder widths and a range of good and poor road surface conditions.
The need to have a reasonable number of drivers is critical to the sound outcome of this work.
This is great opportunity for local drivers to have their say on the standard of road conditions and other levels of service provided by the road authorities.
• Are you an experienced car driver?
• Would you like to drive the circuit in the Winchelsea area to provide valuable feedback on road and access conditions to the road authorities?
• Drivers will be asked to drive one circuit in the automatic Subaru Outback.
Test days will be selected to suit driver preferences, but we hope to conduct the drives, one circuit per driver, on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays throughout August.
If you, or members of your organisation, would like to participate, more detail can be obtained by contacting:
Brendan Gleeson on [email protected] or 0427 554 568
Church NewsSt John’sWe were so fortunate to have such good weather to celebrate our Annual Healing Mass at St Joseph’s Meredith on Saturday. St Joseph’s church provide a beautiful setting, with Father Aurelio Fragapane leading our Mass and Father Herman assisting, The music group helped to add to the atmosphere, along with the candles and flowers in the church, all contributing to a moving and peaceful scene as all were blessed by Father Aurelio and Father Herman.
While the church was filled with parishioners, and many of Father Herman’s Pilipino friends, a group a ladies, and Michael, worked away kitchen under Mary’s direction, to have the three course meal ready for all who attended. On entering the hall a glass of sherry or red or white wine were available to warm everyone. Pumpkin and lamb shank soup also helped to settle everyone. The main meal of roast chicken and pork with beautifully prepared vegetables and gravy followed, it did not take long to fill our plates. The setting in the hall, with the tables being so bright and colourful, all helped contributed to a relaxed atmosphere for people to catch up with each other, so there was a lot of noise and chatter. Then it was on to the desserts and what a variety, all laid out for everyone to select their favourites, plus having the opportunity to try a desert that they may have not tried before. Pavlova and sticky date pudding appeared to be a popular choice. We then had the opportunity to have a coffee or cup of tea, along with a lolly to finish the day.
As people headed for their homes before the evening chill settled in I am sure that everyone went home with a full tummy and a warm feeling that they appreciated all of the effort that goes into preparing for the Annual Luncheon every year. Thank you to all whom in anyway prepared food, or who helped in the kitchen especially those who washed or dried dishes. Every effort contributed to a wonderful get together in our Parish.
Until next time, God Bless Marg Bushell

At the last Growing Winchelsea Inc. meeting, held on July 15, we were given a briefing on several items of interest by our guest speaker, Matt Taylor, Manager Economic Development & Tourism at Surf Coast Shire.Matt gave us an update on:
• Upcoming consultation on RV’s in Winchelsea
• Economic Development and Tourism Budget for 2015/ 2016
• National Stronger Regions Fund Application for Winchelsea
• Winchelsea Prospectus
• Matt also encouraged the group to engage with GORRT (Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism).
Concerns regarding travelers still taking Hamilton Highway and Cape Otway Road and not coming into Winchelsea were raised in a letter to the group. Business numbers are apparently still down, with many travellers not realising that the duplication works are now virtually completed on the section into Winchelsea from Geelong. The written request was for Growing Winchelsea Inc. to lobby Vic Roads to advertise that the highway to Winchelsea is now open. Vic Roads and the Council are intending to advertise when the bridge-works and street-scaping is completed.
Tourism:• Growing Winchelsea must have a
representative on Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism (GORRT), plus further independent representatives from the hinterland area.
• Although we are not on the GORRT radar, GORRT does recognise that the hinterland area does have a lot to offer.
• Winchelsea and hinterland area must have a destination plan to be noticed.
• Michael Hastings of Hastings Ostrich Farms is happy to continue as the representative from Growing Winchelsea Inc.
R V Friendly Submission:The cost structure and report from SCS was presented. During August/September, Council will write to surrounding landowners to get their views, as well as advertising in the Star and Surf Coast Times.
A ‘listening post’ will also be set up to enable rate-payers views to be heard.
It is expected that a document will be finalised by the end of the year, ready for a Council vote.
Footpath Project:A priority list was presented by Jaqui Doyle and Lindsay Bennett was for the following paths-
1. Barwon Terrace from bridge area to swimming pool. It is envisaged that the path will be concrete and run along the western side and be separated from the roadway.
2. Renewal of footpath in Harding Street, from Willis Street to the Senior Citizens clubrooms.
3. Bennett Street, from Willis Street to the Eastern Reserve.
Other projects suggested for investigation are a connection across the Barwon River from Armytage Street to Mercer Street (this would form part of the river loop walk); access from Trebeck Court to Barwon Park mansion; Anderson Street
(Main Street to Warner Street) path renewal; and a pathway to the SES on Princes Highway as part of the highway duplication to Colac.
Forums:Mens Health Night:
Friday 9th October, 2015. Full details will be advertised in September.
NHW Schools Day 19th October, 2015
Childcare: Councilor Carol McGregor will seek further information from Surf Coast Council regarding the lack of support from the Shire for Long Day Child Care in Winchelsea. She will report back to committee next meeting. Terry Mulder has requested to be kept informed of progress.
General Business:• Park Naming - In progress, not yet
presented to Council
• Torquay Swimming Pool & Gymnasium – Concerns raised in relation to all SCS ratepayers having to pay a levy towards the purchase of a $29 million Torquay facility. Councillor McGregor advised that SCS Council will consult and survey communities regarding the justification of the application.
Next Meeting: The next committee meeting will be on Wednesday 12 August, beginning at 6pm at the Presidents Room, Eastern Reserve. Members of the public are invited to come along and suggest new priorities for Winchelsea to be included in the 2016-17 Surf Coast Shire Council Budget.

Slim Dusty is an icon of Australian country music, and the undisputed “King”. When he passed away in 2003, he left behind a lasting legacy. With over 100 albums, hundreds of songs, and countless awards, Slim Dusty told the story of Australia for almost 60 years. In August the songs and stories of Slim Dusty and his life will be revisited when former Colac singer Leigh Moneghetti leads a special tribute show.
“Slim Dusty was my main influence when I first started as a Country singer in 2002”. Moneghetti said.
“I used to study his method and stage presence, and was taken by his ability to
hold the attention of his audience with only his guitar and story-telling songs. Slim knew how to connect with his audience”.
“While technically, there have been better singers, none have been more influential in shaping the country music industry in Australia”.
Moneghetti has put together a three-hour tribute that will show in Colac and Warrnambool in August.
“While Slim played a major part in my formative years as a country singer, my musical journey has taken a few different turns over the years, and Slim’s music has played a smaller part in my repertoire in recent times.” Moneghetti said.
“I just felt that it was time to revisit Slim’s music, and pay tribute to the amazing life of this great man.”
Moneghetti has put together a special band for this tribute, and will be joined on stage by his wife Ammie.
“On the night that I met Ammie in 2003, she sang ‘Saddle Boy’, one of Slim’s great songs from his early career. It will be fantastic to perform together in these shows”.
‘In Dusty Footsteps… a Tribute to the life and music of Slim Dusty’ will show at the Colac RSL on Friday, August 7, and the South Warrnambool Football Netball Club, Sunday, August 23.

After three years of courtesy bus transport for social outings, the popular Bus to the Hub service has a new and permanent home. Hesse Rural Health Service has been a major sponsor of the program providing the buses since its inception and has now taken on the Bus to Hub program permanently. Growing Winchelsea officially handed over the program to Hesse Rural Health Service as of 1st July 2015.
Beginning three years ago with the support of Growing Winchelsea Inc, (formally Working With Winchelsea) Hesse Rural Health Service, Winchelsea Community Bank, Winchelsea Lions Club, Surf Coast Shire, Main Street Milk Bar, Winchelsea Football & Netball Club and Winchelsea Cricket Club the bus service has grown and developed over the three years providing courtesy transport each Thursday evening to the local hub and local eateries along with occasional outings to Geelong.
30+ locals are registered with the program and enjoy a weekly outing, meeting new friends, rekindling old friendships and keeping in touch with the local community.
The service provides low cost meals along with the opportunity for fun and friendly socialisation to anyone who is either over the age of 65, finds themselves becoming isolated or has a disability. Together we all come together for an evening meal with friends and keeping in touch with our wider community.
The program will continue just the same with the fabulous volunteers who give of their time so willingly along with the inclusion of Leisure and Lifestyle Staff from Hesse who will now co-ordinate the program.
Now that the program is sustainable and successful it is time to pass the program over to Hesse Rural Health Service so that Growing Winchelsea Inc can concentrate on developing and promoting
the wonderful township we live in. We sincerely thank Hesse Rural Health Service for taking on the Bus to Hub program and look forward to its continued success.
Anyone wishing to join this fun and friendly group are warmly welcomed. If you would like to come along and give the program a try, we even will shout you your first meal free. What have you got to lose!
The bus travels around town and picks you up from your doorstep between 5.30 – 6.00pm and will have you home in time for the evening movie at 8.30pm
Bookings can be made by calling Ph: 5267 1200
Growing Winchelsea Inc would like to sincerely thank the groups and organisations who have contributed to the success of the program.

Over the weekend OCR FM hosted their inaugural Christmas in July Winter Warmer Community Dinner at the Log Cabin Scout Hall in Colac.Preparations for the evening were preceded by a number of the programs on OCR FM getting into the Christmas spirit with a Christmas in July theme including the No Horse Cowgirl Show and LOL Radio who interviewed Santa Claus live from the North Pole.
With a warm blaze crackling in the fireplace and wintery conditions outside, it certainly felt like a traditional Christmas celebration from the Northern Hemisphere. Guests who came along to the community dinner were treated to a delicious three course meal, Christmas Carol-oke, photo booth and visit from Santa Claus. Children and adults alike enjoyed the ‘Kids Corner’ activities, decorating a Christmas tree and colouring in station.
The night was enjoyed by many locals who left the building with new friends.
OCR FM President Tyson Graham thanked all the OCR FM volunteers who contributed to the evening, with a special thankyou to Maree Redmond who created the incredible Christmas decorations that adourned the hall.
OCR FM are looking forward to their next major event, hosting a screening of the new National Lampoon movie at Colac Cinemas.

Sarah Henderson, Federal Member for Corangamite, today welcomed the release of the Commonwealth Government’s Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper.“For the first time, Australia has a long-term plan to make agriculture stronger”, said Ms Henderson.
Ms Henderson said the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper is a vital part of our plan to build a strong, prosperous economy and a safe, secure Australia.
“A strong agriculture sector contributes to a strong economy—and that means more jobs, more exports, higher incomes and better services to the community.
“We’re determined to make the sector even more competitive and to deliver practical actions that will keep our farmers and farming families profitable and resilient.
“We are lowering tax, cutting red and green tape, building infrastructure, encouraging trade, and supporting business to innovate and create jobs.
“I’m pleased that the Government is delivering lower, simpler and fairer taxes for our farmers.
“We have already abolished the Carbon Tax and the Growing Jobs and Small Business package announced in the Budget will benefit 97 per cent of farmers”, said Ms Henderson.
The White Paper and the 2015 Budget deliver a better tax system for farm businesses by enabling:
• banks to allow farmers to use FMDs as a business loan offset, reducing interest costs estimated at up to $150 million a year, from 1 July 2016
• farmers to opt back into income tax averaging after 10 years, from 1 July 2016;
• farmers to double their Farm Management Deposits (FMDs) to $800,000, from 1 July 2016;
• immediate tax deduction for fencing;
• immediate tax deduction of the cost of new water infrastructure; and
• accelerated three-year depreciation of capital expenditure on fodder assets.
The Government will also invest $11.4 million to boost ACCC engagement with the agricultural sector including a new Commissioner expert in agriculture.
“A more farm-savvy and proactive ACCC will encourage fair-trading and strengthen competition in agricultural supply chains”
The White Paper builds on the Government’s investments to build 21st century water, transport and communications infrastructure, including a new National Water Infrastructure Fund.
“The Government’s $500 million National Water Infrastructure Fund will provide future water security for our farmers”
Ms Henderson said “I also welcome the Government’s announcement of an additional $60 million on top of the $100 million Mobile Black Spot Programme to improve mobile coverage across regional Australia.”
Australia will always stand by farmers in drought. Including initiatives announced in the 2015 Budget, the White Paper provides long-term support for famers when they need it most:
• up to $250 million in Drought Concessional Loans each year for 11 years;
• $22.8 million to increase Farm Household Allowance case management for farmers;
• increased financial counselling services and improved access to community mental health;
• access for farmers to their Farm Management Deposits when needed, without losing tax concessions;
• $35 million for local infrastructure projects to help communities suffering due to drought;
• $25.8 million over four years to manage pest animals and weeds in drought-affected areas; and
• advice and help from the Australian Taxation Office.
Ms Henderson said the Government is opening new export markets and will protect Australia’s highly prized biosecurity status, which underpins our valuable exports.
“The Government has successfully delivered the trifecta of free trade agreements with Japan, the Republic of Korea and China – this will deliver new opportunities for our farmers”, said Ms Henderson
“I am delighted that the White Paper includes $200 million to improve biosecurity which will help ensure Australia’s premium products remain top quality and $30.8 million to break down technical barriers to trade and appointing five new overseas Agriculture Counsellors”, said Ms Henderson
“Together we are building a stronger, more productive, more profitable and more sustainable Australian agriculture sector.”
Sarah Henderson encouraged farmers and residents wanting to know more about the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper to visit agwhitepaper.agriculture.gov.au
White Paper is a strong plan for local farmers

Hosting North Geelong at home we would face tough physical matches across the board and need to be strong and composed. Both A Grade and the under 15’s got back on the winners board with convincing wins but unfortunately that was all we could manage for the day.
A GradeWinchelsea 74 def North Geelong 20
We got off to a brilliant start which is what we needed to shake off the voodoo of our last games. Our goaling was shared by 4 goalers and all delivered. The defenders were spot on putting the pressure on and keeping North’s score low. We went into the second half determined to increase the score line and get a good percentage out of this game. Katrina Filice put up every shot in the third quarter and made herself a great option, the other attackers moved the ball quickly to capitalise. Leanna Hosking got her hands to several balls on their centre pass robbing them of a chance to score. A massive 54 goal finally had us with a happy coach.
Best Players: Tayla Hardiman, Leanna Hosking and Karlee De Bono
B GradeNorth Geelong 33 def Winchelsea 30
The game was won by the team who had the most run of goals and unfortunately for us, North Geelong had one too many. With North’s A Grade out of contention for finals they have strategically dropped players to strengthen B grade and with Sarah Todd going down with a serious wrist injury in the first 5 minutes of the game we were on the back foot from the beginning. Ebony Berg did a great job stepping up and replacing Sarah. Everyone played reasonably well but the game came down to a couple of errors from us throughout the game.
Best Players: Bronwyn Walker, Ebony Berg and Sharna Arceri
C GradeNorth Geelong 34 def Winchelsea 13
North Geelong proved too good for us in C Grade this week outscoring us comfortably each quarter. Claire Round, Alisha Adams and Amanda Carroll put plenty of pressure on North Geelong defensively and worked the ball well out of defence. Unfortunately we couldn’t convert this on the score board. Windy conditions made accurate shooting difficult and heightened the importance of working a good shot and working hard for rebounds. Unfortunately this week we were just beaten by a better side.
Best Players: Claire Round, Amanda Carroll and Alisha Adams
D GradeNorth Geelong 34 def Winchelsea 17
Having lost to North Geelong last time by 10 goals we needed an improved performance this week. We started off well, being only 1 goal down at quarter time, but North Geelong picked up their intensity and were able to capitalise on our unforced errors. North put on some physical pressure but to our credit we maintained our composure and didn’t get caught up in any nonsense. Halleisha Kirby and Tilly Campana created many turnovers in defence whilst Jackie Steere kept the ball moving steadily through the centre but we had some trouble penetrating the circle and wasted too many opportunities.
Best Players: Halleisha Kirby, Tilly Campana and Jackie Steere
17 & UnderNorth Geelong 28 def Winchelsea 12
Unfortunately we didn’t come away with the win this week as we faced a strong, developed North Geelong. Caitlin Burgess and Lily Connors showed their versatility when they moved from goals to the centre court. A credit to these girls
for transitioning well into a non-preferred position. Connie Royal had a standout game getting countless intercepts which unfortunately we could not convert into goals. Romy Fawcett continues to improve and is a fantastic asset in our goal ring. Great job girls as we almost halved the margin from last time we played North.
Best Players: Connie Royal, Romy Fawcett and Caitlin Burgess
15 & UnderWinchelsea 28 def North Geelong 22
A tough close game today gave us a taste of what the games in finals may be like. A few new faces in the North side saw more contesting and fighting for the ball all the way down the court. We had to try various combinations to match up the players. To our credit when North Geelong came back at us in the third quarter we dug in and found a way to extend the lead. Ebony Berg shot beautifully against some very good defenders whilst down the other end of the court Beth Connors-Southall shut down the goal attacks strong lead and took many intercepts.
Best Players: Beth Connors-Southall, Ebony Berg and Claire Mawson
13 & UnderNorth Geelong 50 def Winchelsea 1
A tough run home has seen our 13’s take on top placed Bannockburn last week and 2nd placed North Geelong this week. We knew it was going to be a tough game with two defenders out this week due to illness. We mixed up our usual combinations and the girls did a great job trying new positons. Unfortunately we didn’t get many opportunities to score but the girls did a great job remaining position and having fun.
Incentives: Indie Jenkins – for a fabulous effort in the centre court, remaining strong and fight hard for the entire 4 quarters
Shachi Bhutani – for a great job in the defensive end and never giving up

Colts (U18’s)Winchelsea 6 . 6 – 42 St Marys 12 . 14 – 86
Over the past 2 weeks if determination & courage were being monitored our boys would win hands down! The boys are to be commended on their commitment in what has been a difficult season with depleting numbers, but they continue to stand by each other, together as a team.
On Saturday with only 13 players, we were not sure we could even take the field, but a huge thanks to the U16’s who stepped up & allowed the game against St Mary’s to go ahead (with just 14 players). A special mention to Harry & Brian (Blair) who after playing a full game of footy for Geelong College, returned to Winch at ¾ time to help out their teammates in a tough game against St Marys.
It was a great contest with the Winch boys putting the pressure on St Mary’s & at half time they had St Mary’s concerned. Unfortunately Winch lost the game, but as mentioned earlier not without giving it a ‘red hot go’ by working together as a team.
Congratulations boys!

Seniors The 2 oclock side did well to have held North Geelong to 8 goals in the 1st half of the game, while managing to kick 4 of their own. However after ½ time the opposition went up a notch & showed the Blues why they are sitting on top of the
Ladder at the moment. It was an 82 point loss for the Blues but an improvement on the first encounter earlier in the year, & certainly not the 150 point loss being predicted by the Geelong Advertiser. Also good to see some of our 1st year Senior boys kicking goals & featuring in the top 6.
Goals: Graeme McFarlane 2 Trent McLure 1 Jye Price 1 Kurt Berg 1 Kane Bonner1.
Best: Byron Mathison Andrew Leak Kurt Berg Graeme McFarlane Tyson Berg Oscar Briody.
This week sees the W.F.N.C. travel up the ring road to Werribee. It would be great to see as many as possible make the trip to cheer the teams on.
GO BLUES ! !

Winchelsea SES Volunteers RepresentedTwo of our dedicated SES volunteers have represented Winchelsea in two very diverse events.During the April floods in New South Wales, 341 volunteers and staff from 75 Victorian Units were sent to help relieve the local crews. Within 12 hours of the first request for help, taskforces were on their way. Throughout this event NSW SES had received over 22,000 requests for help and undertaken over 170 flood rescues due to record breaking rainfall up to 300mm in parts of the state. All states have a reciprocal agreement and it is very comforting to know that help is not very far away whenever an emergency anywhere in Australia occurs. Murray Bennett represented Winchelsea, being deployed around the Newcastle and Grafton area.
Our other volunteer Margaret Forbes Biram represented Winchelsea in the 2015 Victoria Police and Emergency Services Games held every year to encourage comradery and interoperability between emergency service agencies who ordinarily only see each other during times of emergencies. The games are held at various locations across the state and bring together a diverse group of people for friendly competition in a social setting. Margaret and her partner won gold and silver in the Team Tennis.
