G’day. They call me the Bushwacker and I now live on the mid north coast of NSW. They used to call me Ocka and I used to live in Winchelsea. In 1978 I took a dramatic change of career direction and moved to Canberra to pursue a professional career with the Federal Police. Over the past 36 years I have returned to Winchelsea on many occasions on family visits and have noticed with increasing interest the growth of the town and the many changes that have occurred for the better.

On my most recent visit I happened to purchase a copy of the ‘Star’ (August 12 issue) and I must say that I was very impressed with its professional appearance and quality content. It is a very different publication to the one that I first read back in the late 1970s. The professionalism and wide range of the content in The Star is a credit to the organisation and to the town as a whole. Well done.

I was particularly interested to read about the Winchelsea CFA awards night and to see the photographs in the centre pages. I grew up with John Stocks, Harry Schroeter and Daryl Wilson and their combined service to the CFA of 100 years is an extraordinary achievement. It is locals like this that make the town particularly attractive to the retirees and tree changers that Janet Brown referred to in her article on page four of that issue.

In early 2007 my wife and I decided to put tenants into our home and we then commenced to travel this great country of ours. We kept travelling over most of the country until late 2011 covering almost 200 thousand kilometres. We met all manner of fellow travellers, and there are thousands of them both Australians and foreign tourists alike and we all had the same thing in mind. That was to see and do as much as we could on the limited funds that we had. One thing that we all had in common was to talk about

where we had been so far, where we were going to and where the best camping spots were to be found. Free camping, access to drinking water, toilets, and local attractions were all topics we talked about that may not have been listed in the Travellers Bible (Camps 7). We passed on details of where to go and where not to go depending on what was available.

As you can imagine the free camping travellers would spend their tourist dollar in the area that they camped in. Winchelsea has many attractions for tourists and once the road works have been completed it would be an ideal stopping place. There are fuel sales, quality coffee shops and tea rooms, two Hotels providing meals, take away shops, tourist type retail shops as well as a supermarket, butcher, bank, medical centre and pharmacy etc. There is also a very large and picturesque area on the river bank where it would be ideal to stop for a night or two with an RV or caravan. An RV dump site is also located near the Barwon Hotel.

However, the Surf Coast Shire has a by-law that is designed to prohibit any free camping.

On the approach to Winchelsea from Colac there is a Vic Roads sign on the edge of the highway indicating a Power Nap area 5 Km ahead. In the township opposite the Milk Bar on Main Street there is another Vic Roads sign indicating a Power Nap area a further 400 metres on the left with another sign on the Geelong side of the bridge stating Power Naps Save Lives. On the corner between the Swimming Pool and the Catholic Church there are further council signs pointing towards the river bank as a Caravan Parking Area as well as another sign stating No Sleeping in Vehicles. I wonder where a traveller is meant to have a Power Nap and why Vic Roads safety advice is at odds with the Surf Coast Shire by-laws.

There is an excellent free camping area at Meredith Park on the banks of Lake Colac and only a few kilometres from Colac and Beeac. It offers town water, toilets, garbage collection and concrete fire pits. When we stopped there in 2011 there was also a generous supply of firewood. There is also another excellent free camping area on the banks of the Leigh River at Inverleigh only about 20 kilometres from Winchelsea. The Golden Plains Shire advises that travellers are able to free camp there for up to three nights at a time. The area is opposite the Hotel and offers public toilets, garbage collection, picnic tables, a playground at Lawson Park and a comfortable shade canopy during the summer months. The whole town is within walking distance from the camping area.

It seems to me to be a great pity that many travellers would choose to stop near Colac and/or in Inverleigh and spend their tourist dollar in those towns rather than in Winchelsea. Perhaps the Surf Coast Shire could see their way clear to opening Winchelsea up to more tourist stop overs by not subjecting Winchelsea to a by-law that would seem to be targeting surfers or beach goers to prohibit them from camping in their vehicles on the foreshore.

On behalf of all the travellers on the road I would like to see some proactive lobbying of Winchelsea’s Surf Coast Shire representative to have this by-law relaxed in the town. I am pretty sure that word would soon get around and Winchelsea would become a highly rated stopover point and could only benefit from more money being spent in the town.

Again, I must say the town has lots to offer and the people of the town should be congratulated.

Dates and Times set for Star Writers WorkshopsWith already eight interested people on the list to attend the writers workshops being organised by the STAR, dates and times for the 4 sessions have been agreed by participants. The list is not closed and more people are welcome to attend these free workshops.

The workshops will be held on Thursday evenings commencing at 7pm and finishing at 9pm on the first 4 Thursdays in October-2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd.

The aim of the workshop is for participants to come with ideas for actual stories they would like to write, which may be a news report, history story, feature article about a place, person or a trip, opinion piece or maybe a comment about an event at your club or work place. This could include reviewing a previous article you have written or a completely new topic. It will be important to attend the first session so you can establish what you want to get out of the workshop and the subsequent sessions will be for you to write your story with the help and guidance of our facilitator Janet Brown.

Anyone who has attended the small business writing workshops held this week are welcome to come to the above sessions as it will be an opportunity for you to practice what you have learned with an experienced writer on hand to assist.

Surf Coast Shire Council has called for all major parties to declare their hand on unconventional gas exploration before the November Victorian election.

Council is also calling for the current moratorium on fracking in Victoria to be extended to all forms of unconventional gas exploration and development.

Mayor, Cr Rose Hodge, said Council has participated in the Victorian Government’s current consultation process on the fracking moratorium and encouraged the Surf Coast community to have its say.

“What we have heard is that people are really concerned about the potential impacts of unconventional gas exploration on their land, on our environment and on people’s livelihoods,” Cr Hodge said. “This needs to be acknowledged and respected.”

“The uncertainty around the safety of this practice and the lack of clarity in how it might affect our environment, agriculture and vital industries like tourism mean it is simply too big a risk to take.

Winchelsea Ward Councillor Heather Wellington, who moved a motion on the issue at Council’s August meeting, said

the current regulatory regime around unconventional gas exploration and development was inadequate.

“The current fracking moratorium and the existing regulatory framework are inadequate to protect property owners, communities and the environment,” Cr Wellington said.

“There is serious concern in many Surf Coast communities. There are exploration licences covering areas of the Surf Coast and there are real gaps in understanding of how unconventional gas exploration and development might affect our region.

“The current moratorium needs to encompass all unconventional gas exploration and development unless and until there is a clear community mandate for unconventional gas to be explored further; which is certainly not evident on the Surf Coast.

“It is vital that our community can make an informed choice on the issue at the November state election.”

Council will also approach the Municipal Association of Victoria to gauge its interest in leading a collaborative advocacy approach on the issue across the whole local government sector.

Gluten Free Anzac BiscuitsPatricia Schroeter2 cups gluten free cornflakes 60g (3/4 cup) dessicated coconut 150g (3/4 cup) caster or brown sugar 1 1/2 cups gluten free plain flour 125g butter or margarine 1 tablesp golden syrup or corn syrup 1 1/2 teasp bicarb soda 2 tablesp boiling water

Preheat oven to 160degrees celcius. Line tin with baking paper.

1. In large bowl combine cornflakes, coconut, sugar and plain flour.

2. In a small pan melt butter and syrup

3. Add bicarb soda to boiling water and mix to dissolve, add to butter mixture.

4. Pour butter mixture into dry ingredients, mix well.

5. Roll teaspoons of mixture into balls place on the lined tray allowing room for spreading, flatten lightly with fork (dip fork into cold water if sticking). OR Roll mixture out to 1cm thickness and cut with 5cm cookie cutter, gently lift onto baking tray, leave room to spread.

6. Bake for 20 mins or until golden brown. Cool on tray, place on wire rack to completely cool before storing in airtight container in fridge or freezer.

It might look innocent or even attractive, but declared noxious weed Cape Tulip (one leaf) is about to flower on the Surf Coast and now is the time to help stop its spread.

Surf Coast Shire Council is doing extra work to remove the weed on municipal roadsides, Council owned and Council managed land around Winchelsea and Buckley; and land owners are being encouraged to also step up their efforts to help protect their land and stock.

Cape Tulip (one-leaf) looks like a pink-orange flowering bulb that appears in early spring on roadsides and paddocks. All parts of the plant are poisonous to humans and stock. Stock consuming around 1kg of fresh material can die within 24 hours and there is no treatment readily available.

The weed is a perennial herb from South Africa that grows to around 700mm high with erect stems. It grows from underground corms, with more corms produced every year after a 2-4 week flowering period in spring.

Suggested control measures include:

• Manual control of small infestations is possible, however it is important to try and remove all corms. Any removed corms should be burned.

• Cultivation provides some control however timing is critical as the work must be done after the old corm is exhausted (shrivelled) and before the new corms are formed (usually around June/July). Trash must be burned.

• Chemical control using a registered herbicide just on flowering.

Cape Tulip (one-leaf) is a declared noxious weed under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 and landowners are responsible for taking all reasonable steps to prevent the growth and spread of Regionally Controlled weeds on their land.

Cape Tulip spreads by the movement of seed (up to 1200 seeds per plant) and corms (dense infestations can produce up

to 7000 corms per square metre) which are caught up in farm machinery and particularly in hay or silage.

If you already have Cape Tulip on your property, it is vital that you do not allow it to spread beyond your boundary and that you maintain good machinery hygiene.

Until we have the musicians and singers to develop a worship group we will continue to use contemporary video clip worship. All generations will continue to be welcome at this service as a church is supposed to be a place; which enjoys the input and fellowship of all generations sharing their God given gifts in order to become all that our maker can enable it to be. Why not give up that annoying Sunday drive into Geelong and come along and see how you can contribute to your local church?

Recent events. On Saturday morning about 21 local men enjoyed a lovely pancake breakfast cooked and served by Maureen King and her band of willing helpers. But the highlight of the

morning goes to Sukoon and Ashwani Bedi residents of Winchelsea and our well known supermarket propriety family, who shared something of their journey with us. Sukoon is a natural speaker whose stories of growing up in India have probably changed the way I view bees, watermelons and little boys forever! The funds raised at this breakfast will be sent to the “Samaritan House” for homeless men in Geelong. This is a local charity set up by a coalition of Geelong churches that we have been supporting since its inception a couple of years ago.

The Mysterious Disappearing Tablecloths. It seems that we have a bit of a mystery to solve at St Thomas’ as after one of our functions earlier this year somebody kindly offered to take the lace tablecloths home to launder but seems to have forgotten to return them. A number of very unreliable witnesses seem vaguely to recall the kind offer but no one can remember who actually made it. We were all hoping that it might be one of our traveling nomads but as each of them have now returned from their wanderings we still haven’t discovered the whereabouts of the tablecloths and we are now wondering if it was a less frequent parishioner! So if you could all just take a look in your laundry basket’s we will ask no questions when they reappear, as long as they are freshly laundered that is! If you have them and are just too embarrassed to return them, (like me and my last bunch of theological library books), drop them at the vicarage door and I will smuggle them back for you.

Food for thought On Sunday we considered something of the love of God the Father for those the world often ignores or despises as revealed to us in Jesus’ story of the lost sheep. In this well-known metaphorical story Jesus warns us not to despise the lost sheep since God goes to great lengths to rescue them. Considering it was Father’s day it was good to be reminded of how much our heavenly father values each one of his children and how human parenthood can serve to give us a picture of the love of Father God. Sadly it can also distort our image of God when we have abusive or distant fathers and so our heavenly father sent Jesus to show us what God is really like.

Surf Coast Shire Visit On Wednesday we had a visitor from the Surf Coast Shire. It was Jan McClean from the Positive Ageing department. She came to inform us on all the benefits which are available to all aged or seniors within the Shire.

Recipe of the weekSpiced Pumpkin Tagliatelle With Lime2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil 1/4 cup Thai red curry paste. 2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar 600g pumpkin peeled and cut into 3 - 4cm chunks 2 lemongrass stalks bruised 400ml light coconut milk 1 1/2 Tablespoons Indian Lime Pickle 350g Tagliatelle 1/4 cup Coriander leaves

1. Heat vegetable oil in a saucepan on medium. Add curry paste and cook for 2 mins, until fragrant. Add brown sugar and cook for 4 minutes until sticky and fragrant. Add pumpkin and lemongrass and cook, stirring for 2 minutes until well coated. Add coconut milk and lime pickle. Bring to boil and simmer for 20 minutes until pumpkin is tender but not mushy. Remove and discard lemongrass stalks.

2. Meanwhile, cook the tagliatelle in salted boiling water according to the packet directions. Drain.

3. Pour half of the sauce into a large bowl. Add the tagliatelle and use tongs to mix well. Add the remaining sauce and stir to combine. Divide between serving plates and scatter over with coriander leaves.

Indian Lime Pickle is one of the most popular condiments in Indian cuisine. Different brands vary in heat and acidity, so it’s best to start with a mild one and work your way from there. Lime Pickle is available from Indian food stores.

A recent report released by Victoria’s leading transport advocate, RACV has called for an injection of $4.6 billion in regional Victoria over the next decade to address critical road and public transport deficiencies, which are limiting the travel opportunities for regional communities and putting the brakes on economic development.

The Regional Growing Pains report says Warrnambool needs $460 million of that funding to address its road and public transport problems.

The report follows a year-long comprehensive investigation by RACV into the transport needs of regional Victorians which involved broad ranging consultation with regional community groups, RACV members and residents.

A Regional Growing Pains survey attracted almost 8000 respondents with the results providing valuable information to help us identify the most pressing transport concerns of regional Victorians. RACV

also engaged with local Councils, public transport operators and State Government agencies.

The resulting Regional Growing Pains report presents an integrated and balanced package of road and public transport improvements which we consider is needed to strengthen the links that connect regional centres to each other, to the communities surrounding them and to Melbourne.

They include town bypasses, road duplications, capacity upgrades, safety improvements, railway station upgrades and public transport service improvements.

The report also identifies the more localised transport improvements needed to cope with transport demands in the state’s ten largest regional cities including Warrnambool. Listed below are RACV’s priority projects for Warrnambool:

• Princes Highway West - Complete duplication from Geelong to Colac

• Princes Highway (Raglan Parade) safety upgrade

• Warrnambool Railway Station upgrade

• Warrnambool rail line upgrade

Warrnambool Mayor Michael Neoh said he strongly supports RACV’s recommendations.

“As a growing regional city Warrnambool needs to ensure continued investment in both road and rail infrastructure to ensure efficient and safe movement of people and freighting of our region’s product which is essential to our economy.”

RACV General Manager Public Policy Brian Negus has called on the State Government and the State Opposition to adopt the recommendations in the Regional Growing Pains report as a matter of urgency.

Bell Post Hill 55 def Winchelsea 27

This was the bonus game so we had nothing to lose. We started with a different combination again this week that proved effective in small passages. A timers error which stopped the game early at 12 minutes seemed to stop our run. The attacking end did a good job to break the zone only the shots were not sinking. Our defensive line ran with them and made them work hard for every shot. Unfortunately for us Bell Post Hill’s goalers were very accurate.

We made some changes again hoping to ignite some drive through the centre third and bring forward some movement. This didn’t work as we were called for some offensive contacts and struggled to find our shooting range. The defenders kept chipping away at it and playing tight one on one defence but with that whistle going and not allowing contesting this often meant we had a player out of play. To many three goal runs from Bell Post meant they had a good lead heading into half time.

We made some more changes because we could and we were still having the same issue in attack. Although with Elly Castles coming into Goal Shooter our shooting accuracy did improve and she seemed to shoot well when needed.

Hayley Birch moved to wing defence and contested many passes but the umpiring didn’t see it as contesting and we were a player down in the defensive end again. Alisha Adams was caught with her head down this quarter which meant the strong Bell Post Goal Shooter took a few easy passes on the base line. Janelle Birch matched it with Bell Post’s power house Kim Martin well and made her work hard for the ball for a shot. We had a few good runs but just not enough. We went into the last with a big margin to catch.

We made some more changes in the last quarter and Chloe Wilson had her first run in Centre. We had nothing to lose so we wanted to make some uncharacteristic changes and wear Bell Post Hill out for Werribee.

The team kept trying to do something different to get that one break but

inaccurate shooting again and the sound of that whistle made sure that wasn’t happening. Everyone finished strong and not too disappointed with the game because unlike last week there were good passages of play but Bell Post experience and skill just was too much for us this year.

The Annual Good Neighbour Award

Dear Editor

I am writing in response to your article titled Its Wabbit Firewood Season published on 2/09/2014.

It was with a bit of amusement that I noted that the Minister for speak Mr. Terry Mulder announced that the Victorian spring firewood season is now open (01/09/2014 until 30/11/2014)

The only problem we have is that both of the remaining collection points that are available to us in Winchelsea are still closed and will remain so for the foreseeable future

I cut and pasted the following statement from the DEPI Website with the hope that you will publish it and stop people wasting

their time going down to Forest and or Irrewillipe hoping to get some wood

Barwon South West Region domestic firewood collection areas are closed due to wet weather. These areas will be open as soon as conditions permit and it is safe for the public to enter domestic firewood collection sites.

Of course this doesn’t include the closest area that we use have access to Paddy’s Swamp but that has been closed for the last couple of years (no one can tell me why)

Today is the first Thursday of the month, 7th September.

Every ‘first Thursday of the month’ lately I find myself at the Winchelsea Tearooms listening to the most amazing artists and today I was not disappointed.

Annalisa Kerrigan, enthralled all present not only with her amazing voice but her warm, vivacious personality. She has a

CV that fills an A5 in any size font. She told us, very casually, how if she wants to sing at any particular venue she makes it happen by joining forces with other artists and preparing a program instead of waiting to be invited. These venues extended from Florence where she lived for 6 years and performing all through Europe... not to overlook many other countries.

She was just soooooo good. Thank you, Annalisa for a wonderful morning. Danny Boy has always been a favourite but now I understand the story behind the song.

John Bumford is the force behind these Morning Melodies events. With his years of involvement in music he knows when someone is good and if they hadn’t heard of Winchelsea they are soon encouraged to come and sing at the Tearooms. Thank you John for bringing these artists to us.

For those who have never been, make a diary entry for 10am Morning Tea and 11-12 am Musical Program, 1st Thursday of the month at the Tearooms. Great value for $20 all inclusive. Notices are always in the Star or in the butcher’s window.

Blues NewsColts League Best & Fairest Winner Zach MoulesAnother great result for the W.F.N.C. with the result of the Colts League Best & Fairest Vote Count held at Buckley’s Entertainment Centre , on Monday 1st September. Winchelsea’s Zach Moules took out the Div 4 Vote Count with a 6 vote buffer from 2nd place, a fantastic reward both personally & for the Club. Congratulations Zach ! Other team members to poll well were Captain Kurt Berg , Jye Price , & Jarryd Lubcke, well done boys.

W.F.N.C. is a “stand alone” Club & to have Regan Miller - under 14’s & Zach Moules -Colts Best & fairest vote getters is an outstanding result for the Club & shows really encouraging signs for the future.

• Local driver John Davis won the feature race on the program at Bendigo Speedway on Saturday night Feb 11th in his sprint car. Geoff Davis had trouble in an earlier race and damaged his differential. Geoff Leigh was in trouble too damaging a piston. Both Geoffs say they will be back, especially for the feature races at Mildura and Swan Hill at Easter.

• This week’s long story - Peter Bogie has popped the question to Barney and Barney has consented providing Peter plays football with Winchelsea this season. Peter Bogie and Heather Parsons announced their engagement on the 17th of February. Congratulations Peter and Heather.

• The staff of the Winchelsea and District Hospital would like to thank Mrs Beatrice McFarlane of Inverleigh for her kind donation following her hospitalisation. The donation has been used to purchase a much needed babies changing table.

Sunday the 7th of September saw the opening of the 2014/2015 season at the clubrooms. The first jack was rolled by Julie Johnson and Dennis Delaney, our new coach rolled the first bowl. An enjoyable 3 games of 2 bowl triples was played followed by some speeches from our President, Peter McConachy, Ladies President Jenny McConachy and coach Dennis Delaney. A scrumptious afternoon tea was welcomed after bowling in beautiful weather. The winners of this afternoon were Gordon Bubb, David Yandell and Dale Hateley.

On Saturday the 6th of September Winchelsea played host to Highton Bowls Club for a practice match. All rinks were full and it was an excellent kick off to our pre season training. We have several practice games scheduled for Saturdays and Tuesdays until pennant begins in earnest in October.

Over the winter months Noel Vesey has run a very successful Saturday 2/4/2 competition and with players from other clubs attending regularly, it has helped to keep those who enjoy winter bowling in form. The members thank Noel very much for offering us this opportunity each week.
