VicRoads advises that traffic has been progressively moved onto the new lanes on sections of the Princes Highway between Waurn Ponds and Winchelsea over the previous week.

The locations include:

• Almost 3.0 kilometres of highway between Mt Pollock Rd and Waltons Rd

• About 4.0 kilometres of highway from east of Andersons Rd to west of Hendy Main Rd

There will be reduced speed limits throughout these areas to monitor the condition of the road and allow for motorists to get used to the changed traffic conditions.

Drivers are advised to plan for extra travel time and expect minor delays during this time.

Drivers should remain alert to the changed traffic conditions when travelling through the area and to obey all roadwork signs and speed limits.

The traffic switch will allow work to commence on the remainder of the duplicated road.

VicRoads would like to thank all motorists for their continued patience during the Princes Highway duplication works.

People are encouraged to call 13 11 70 to report road hazards and to visit the VicRoads VicTraffic website and App which provides live traffic information about emergency road closures, traffic alerts, freeway travel time and traffic flow across the network.

A Winchelsea welcome. What a delight to receive the letter to the editor from Jules McDowall and be able to publish it for all to read (page 4). The pleasure for me is, firstly, to know that a newcomer has found a generous welcome at Winchelsea and secondly, that our weekly newspaper provides an insight for new and old residents into the activities and services available in the town. Having lived in the community for 70 years, I find it hard to judge how the community is seen by new residents.

The Star has also received praise from a previous resident who left town 30 years ago. He commented that the paper was much improved in layout and content since he first read it in the late 1970’s – I would certainly hope so!.

These words of encouragement are much welcomed by the volunteers of the Star team.

New Editor needed. After bringing fresh ideas and new energy to the position of editor for the past 6 months, Stu Fountain has had to relinquish the position. Unfortunately he found that wearing the 3 hats - editor, compositor and printer - has led to conflicts that are hard to resolve. It also conflicted with the Star policy of involving a number of people to share the load in the demanding schedule of getting the paper on the streets every week for the past 37 years. Only around 10% of community newspapers in Victoria are produced weekly.

So there is an opportunity for someone to volunteer for the position which is responsible for the content in the weekly paper. Reporting is done by members of the community. Finance, advertising and other admin tasks are handled by other members of the Star team. Being editor of the Star is a great way to be involved in the community and your efforts will help to produce a tangible and valued result each week.

Armytage Street ‘Lit Up”Last Tuesday evening at about 7.30pm, residents of Armytage Street and surrounds were ‘Lit Up’ by the Air Ambulance as it used its spot light to navigate and land on the Hesse Street Oval.

The helicopter made its approach from the north, almost directly over the train station, then the tennis courts in Armytage Street, delicately navigating its way over the pine trees, finally landing near the end of the newly developed, Redgum Court. Once landed, the crew hastily disembarked, delivering a humidicrib. Five minutes later, once the special care crib was delivered and the ‘chopper’ was quick to depart, back on its way to Melbourne. The humidicrib was transferred to a road ambulance which had brought the patient from Colac and then proceeded to Geelong.Image courtesy The Daily Advertiser

Drivers Beware.Late in the afternoon Bob and I were asked by a friend to help tow out her “AWD” Ford Territory which was bogged on a back track in the Otways. On arrival the vehicle required a “winch tow” out of the water and slush.

The vehicle on inspection did not have any tow points. How do people tow out vehicles even if on a slippery surface? The vehicle was a AWD (all wheel drive). Ah, look up the owners manual. The manual stated that if the owner requires the vehicle to be taken off-road etc you

have to purchase the towing attachments as an after sales item. You can imagine what was said.

A lesson to be learned, and I would encourage everyone to check their vehicles and make sure your vehicle has appropriate tow points.

Happy end to the story, after time on a shovel , a couple of us finally pushed the vehicle out through water before dark.

Beware. Towing from the wrong points can cause structural damage to your vehicle.

Proud Member

I moved to Winchelsea in March this year. I fell in love with Winch some months prior when I looked at buying a house here (the sale fell through & I ended up in Buckley) Now my circumstances find me living here and I couldn’t be more pleased. I was familiar with Winch through some of my customers at Faggs Mitre 10 in Torquay. Joe Buhrmann of the Lions Club being one such customer who visits our store at least once a week. I often wave to him when I pass his place on the way home from work… on his verandah taking in the sun.

What a joy it is to live in Winch! Though only here a short time, I feel so at home and have been welcomed by so many people already. In my first week, the lovely couple at the visitors centre gave me the inside scoop and even shared with me a secret spot to take my grandsons Mason and Jax fishing. The girls at Café la Hoot who make the best coffee ever, remember I take one sugar in my coffee each time I visit. Paul and Lynn at the butchers have awesome meat and their seafood, ham and turkey are the best. Lauren at the Bendigo Bank really did treat me like a person, not a number. Both pubs have welcomed my kids, grandkids and me with standout hospitality and food. The girls at the servo are always cheery despite it being the early hour of 6.30am when I usually call in. The boys at Knuckeys got me out of a fix with a car battery one weekend sharing a good laugh in the process and that same weekend Mr Schroeter came to my house to install the battery. IGA offer to carry your groceries to the car. Try getting that kind of service in the bigger towns! Jenny’s is a veritable treasure trove with many finds making their way into my home already. Same goes for the Op Shop and all the great girls who volunteer there.

Being able to pick up my mail from the post office on a Saturday is a bonus and even though I work in hardware, I can’t resist a visit to Winch Trading to soak up the atmosphere and great service. Then there’s Philomena at The Teahouse for a yum Devonshire tea with my grandkids (I’ve even had a night or two around the fire with Phil at her place with my friend, Lynny from Torquay who comes to visit

often). And turns out, despite knowing Lynny for over a decade, I only recently learnt her origins lie in the district being part of the Marshman family, something that only came to light when I told her I was moving to Winch! Stan and Robert from the local taxi service rock and the stationmaster is always smiling and helpful.

In fact, almost everybody waves and smiles in the street, a welcome change from those self proclaimed “important, busy people” in such a rush with eyes to the ground that we encounter everywhere these days. I reckon there’s more to discover in Winch and based on my experience of this beautiful town so far, I can’t wait. What a fantastic place to live, full of genuine, real people and a lovely community feel. And lastly, let’s not forget the Winchelsea Star. It’s been a great reference for a “newby” to the town.

A Winchelsea WelcomeLetter to the Editor

Great Ocean Road – Open VicRoads announced that the Great Ocean Road has reopened to all traffic following a successful four day exercise to replace an 80 year old drainage pipe.

VicRoads Regional Director, William Tieppo said he was pleased that traffic can now get through after the planned closure.

“The Great Ocean Road is open with one lane operating thanks to the dedication and commitment of the road workers, equipment operators and truck drivers,” Mr Tieppo said.

“There is still a bit of work to do but we have managed to get one lane operational.

“The road crews are focussing their efforts on the final asphalting and installation of guard rail to complete the work which is expected by Wednesday 10 September 2014.

“Drivers should expect minor delays until work is finished to reinstate the surface,” Mr Tieppo said.

Are you a Star writer? or would like to be? When asked to write something for the Star, the common reply is “I can’t write.”

An attempt to change the “can’t do” idea is the Writers’ Workshop in October, organised by the Star.

The course will run over 4 weekly sessions and is fully sponsored by the Star, so NO FEE TO PARTICIPANTS.

Workshop dates and times will be agreed by those participating.

We are fortunate to have Janet Brown, who wrote the article “Are you a Star writer” in last week’s Star, facilitating the workshops.

Janet Brown is a writer whose work has been published since the early 1990s. Her short stories and essays are published in anthologies and literary journals in Australia and the US and have won prizes in Australia and the UK.

As a freelance writer and editor, her articles are published in various major newspapers and magazines. She writes fiction and non-fiction, has a Master of Arts in Creative Writing, and writes plays and other scripts. Janet teaches writing courses and workshops and assesses other writers’ manuscripts. Since 2006 Janet and her husband have been living on a small farm at Gherang.

Spring Flower and Craft Show.To Members, Helpers, Sponsors, Judges, Speaker, Visitors, to all whom assisted in any format, and the Exhibitors for their entries, that make the Show. Thank You. WH&GC.

You are invitedFrack Free Moriac would like to invite you to our town declaration, which we are very excited about.

After surveying the towns of Moriac, Mt Moriac and Paraparap, we are thrilled to be releasing the results at our town celebration.

This a really big event for our town, and it shows we are a strong community. We have invited all surfcoast councillors, Federal MP’s, South Barwon candidates and upper house Western Victorian candidates. Already some have replied and are thrilled to be able to speak to us.

We invite you to come to the Newling Reserve hall (Hendy Main rd) Sunday 14th September, at 2pm, to be a part of our declaration and presentation. It is a chance to celebrate our great town and community spirit. After the presentation, an afternoon tea will be provided and an opportunity to chat to neighbours or even ask a few questions to the politicians.

We certainly hope to have a huge turnout, as this declaration will have a big impact not only on the state election, but on the grounds that gas companies have no social licence in our area.

Member for Polwarth, Terry Mulder has announced that the Spring firewood collection season will open across Victoria at the beginning of next month.

“From the 1 September, designated firewood collection areas will open after being closed during winter,” Mr Mulder said.

“Once collection sites open, Victorians will be able to collect firewood for domestic use until 30 November.

“Since 2011 firewood collection on public land has been made easier and more affordable under changes made by the Victorian Coalition Government.

“The Victorian Coalition Government has reduced the burden of red tape put in place under the previous Labor government, and made it easier for households to access an annual supply of firewood by abolishing useless permits.

Firewood collection is only permitted during designated times of the year and from designated firewood collection areas.

Firewood collected at these sites is for personal use only and cannot be sold. Official signs will display the rules and collection limits.

For more information and updates visit www.depi.vic.gov.au or call 136 186.

We started here in May 2007.

Dad always liked country towns and wanted to make a move from Melbourne. The IGA Winchelsea was on sale. We made a trip here to see it in August 2006 and loved the place. One because it was close to Geelong and Lorne and still had the country feel to it. The people here were nice to speak to.

Dad has been in business all his life. Our old business in India which was like “Good Guys” here, my grand father started that and we had it for 55 years before we sold and made the move to Australia. That is the reason he wanted to do business here as well. Dad loves working and he has been in business all his life.

Long working hours, 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, big capital outlay, machinery breakdowns, locals support were some of the initial challanges faced. But since then, we have renovated the whole supermarket and hopefully won’t have any more breakdowns and also we have plenty of local support which is great to see. We work very hard for the locals and it is good to see more of them come to shop locally.

Including us, we have a total of 21 employees.

Typical day would start early with bringing news papers, getting fresh bread, fruit and vegetables, milk and putting them out. Then there is a lot of paper work in the office and the store to clean for deliveries. We get two grocery deliveries

and two liquor deliveries in a week and one perishables (dairy/freezer) in a week. Fruit/Veg and Milk come 3 times a week Monday/ Wednesday/Friday and we have ordering to do other days for all IGA deliveries and all fresh deliveries. I think out of all of those, rostering is the hardest job because you have to keep all happy.

Best thing about Winchelsea is the people support and its location. It is close to everything yet it has a country character to it.

And people here are very helpful. I can take a lot of names of locals who helped us out during renovations just because they wanted to help. James Jacobs and all his family, Sam Leak, Charlie Earl, Darren Burgess, Lorry, all my staff at odd hours, Mukesh Bhutani, Harry Schroeter, John Bader, Phil and Nancy, John , Mark Brown, Kevin McDonald, the list will keep on going as we had a wonderful support from all locals and patience as well while we were renovating. I have never seen that kind of love and support anywhere else I have lived. Not just with our renovations but every day. People in Winch are just lovely and I feel part of a big family here.

I would like to see a high school again in Winchelsea. Apart from that, I think we have everything here. Probably a few more industries to create some new jobs for locals.

From a business point of view, I would like to see more locals shop locally. If there is anything that they want, please let us know so we can get it or fix any problems that the locals face from our business.

This Saturday September the 6th is our annual pre-fathers day breakfast in the church hall. This year our special guests are Ashwani and Sukoon Bedi from our local Supermarket. I have been told that Sukoon is going to share with us their experience of migrating to Australia and choosing to settle here amongst us in Winchelsea and take on the supermarket. Ashwani and his whole extended family have become popular local business people in our town and it will be fascinating to hear something of their story. Additionally Maureen King will head up the women’s team in serving breakfast for the local fathers. You don’t need to be a member of any of the churches to come this will be a purely social occasion and opportunity to spoil our local dads. The cost is $10 per-head, not bad for a cooked breakfast!

Food for thought On Friday we said farewell to Henry Hopkins in a service of Thanksgiving that was a tribute to a lovely man. The church was packed and the service was relayed into the hall with around 400 guests coming alongside Rosemary and the family to offer their support and express their love. One of the privileges of ministry is being able to visit and minister to housebound people like Henry, but in Henry’s case I always

came away feeling that I was the one who had really been blessed. Henry may have been 81 and his body was certainly letting him down with regular trips into Colac for dialysis, but he was certainly not old in his capacity to think and listen and his positive outlook on life was refreshing.

He loved to hear about new innovations in our services and would constantly encourage what he considered was original thinking. Throughout the service on Friday we heard one theme repeating itself and that was the theme of love. I think it was his son John who told us that when Henry married Rosemary after the death of their mother Judy, Henry’s family multiplied as he and Rosemary’s brood combined, but John told us that the pool of Henry’s love wasn’t divided between the families; it just multiplied to encompass them all.

This theme of love continued with our service on Sunday as Rev’d John Minotti again shared with us, this time from Romans 12 where Paul encourages Jesus’ followers in the city of Rome to a life of genuine love. This love was to be the underlying virtue in the life of all Christians, but it wasn’t to be some kind of soppy self-interested love but the type of sacrificial committed love that marked the life and death of Jesus Christ. A genuine love that shapes the way we live and is even evident in our love towards those who persecute or hate us. John shared a story of how we must write the offences of those who hurt us in the sand to allow the winds of time & forgiveness to blow them away, but engrave the actions of those who do us good in stone so that we always can remember them. I suspect many will have many good memories to engrave in stone about Henry Hopkins, because Henry’s life was shaped by the love of his Saviour Jesus Christ.

“Romans 12: 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone”.

God bless, Rev’d Wendy Gravolin.

Limerick of the week A maiden at college named Breeze Weighed down by BA’s and Litt D’s Collapsed from the strain. Alas, it was plain She was killing herself by degrees.

Recipe of the weekGreek Walnut Cake

2 cups Walnut halves, plus 12 extra for decorating 100g Light Olive Oil spread 2/3 cup Castor Sugar 3 Eggs separated 1 cup Self Raising Flour 3/4 cup low-fat Greek style Yoghurt

Syrup 1/3 cup Honey 5cm strip Lemon Zest 1 Cinnamon Stick 3 Cloves

Preheat the oven to 180c. Grease a 20cm springform cake tin and line with baking paper. Finely grind the walnuts in a food processor or blender.

Put the olive oil spread and the sugar into a bowl and beat with electric beaters for 3 - 4 minutes, or until pale and creamy. Add the egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the flour, finely ground walnuts and yoghurt until combined.

Put the egg whites into a small bowl that is thoroughly clean and dry, and beat with clean electric beaters until soft peaks

form. Gently fold half the eggwhites into the walnut mixture, then gently fold in the remaining eggwhites. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the surface. Press the extra walnut halves into the top of the mixture for a decorative effect.

Bake the cake for 50 - 55 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre, comes out clean. Set aside to cool for 5 minutes before removing the cake from the tin.

Meanwhile, to make the syrup, combine 1/3 cup water with the honey, lemon zest, cinnamon and cloves in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over a high heat. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 - 6 minutes, or until slightly thickened. Discard the lemon zest and spices.

Pour the hot syrup over the warm cake. Serve the cake warm or cold with a dollop of yoghurt if desired. Serves 12.

Letters to the EditorDear Editor

Keeping community spirit together

As the centenary of the First World War approaches I have had mixed feelings of how the Winchelsea Community would mark this event.

I submit this option for the community to consider. The community has built and maintained the existing 1st World War memorial (grand stand) at Eastern Reserve, which is quite unique and a major historic feature of the community. With the help of Mr Stuart Fountain’s expertise in computer graphics a preliminary plan of how all existing war memorials and cannon could be brought together, and landscape the area that community would be proud of, and peaceful settings for future commemoration services. The brick paving could have names of all service men and women marked on individual bricks.

As the master plan for development of Eastern Reserve is being undertaken I believe it is the right time to raise this option as traffic management plan to Eastern Reserve can be designed.

(This has been considered in submitting this plan and there is alternatives) The existing entrance would be open for pedestrian traffic only.

This project could be undertaken as a community project between Government / Shire and Winchelsea community.

David Loone

Dear Editor

I would like to back up the wife that wrote in about the dog poo left on the footpaths in the town. I can see why they are cheesed off. Just think of the children going to school and walking in it, how it would stink. I must say that each year I would sweep off dog droppings that selfish people leave behind at least 20 times so people don’t walk in it. Just this morning in front of the main shops , yes, you guessed it dog poo left on the footpath. Another thing that cheeses me off is people just drop their rubbish in the street, just too lazy to walk a few steps to put it in the bin

A special thank you to the wonderful staff of the Winchelsea Hospital for their care. Who would want to be anywhere else when your loved one needs family and friends to be with them.

The Winchelsea Lions Club - what can I say! but thank you. The farewell you gave Murray was unforgettable.

Last but not least, as I return to my community activities. I am not alone! Winchelsea is a very special place.

Last Thursday August 21, Winchelsea Probus had their monthly outing, this time it was to Overnewton Castle in Keilor. Previously Joan Mackenzie had spoken to us about her time growing up there and her great love for the place.

Overnewton was bought by William Taylor in 1849 along with 13,000 acres of land,(imagine that in todays real estate?) In 1859 after returning from a trip to his native Scotland he set about turning the existing five room farmhouse into a 30 room baronial castle complete with turrets, gables and a spiral staircase. The present

owner Leslie Norton, still lives there and we were shown around by his daughter Emma who was charming and told us many amusing anecdotes about living and growing up in a fairytale castle, she even took us into her father’s bedroom (luckily the four poster bed was made)and showed us his wardrobe concealed in one of the turrets. The house is authentically furnished with wonderful antique pieces and a great collection of paintings, yet still maintains a homely feel about it. Dr Norton is obviously a great fan of Queen Victoria as her face shines down from many walls.

The grounds are now only three and a half acres but contain many wonderful 100 year old trees and plants. The property now hosts weddings, garden parties, afternoon teas etc

Following the tour we proceeded to the equally historical Keilor Hotel with its entrance modelled like a street of old fashioned shop fronts for a delicious lunch. Once again we has a wonderful day out thanks to our trip organisers and our coach captain John from Hutchinsons. My spies tell me one or two members even had wins on the pokies!!!

Submissions to The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page. Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted. Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

Writers of the week Dear Mrs Turner Ieisha Brown - Grade 5/6

My name is Ieisha Brown and I’m from the grade 5/6 classroom. I would like to change the netball rings because they always twist and turn when you go to shoot them. It’s very annoying because it turns a lot and you can never get a goal. They are old and rusty have no padding and kids can get knocked out by the netball ring.

For my first reason, when the Monday night netball team train the netball ring is always at different angles every time you go to shoot. So when it comes to the game it is at a different angle than the one we have here at school.

For my second reason, they have no padding and someone might get knocked out because they are made of a very hard metal and can cause a lot of damage to someone. Would you like kids coming to your office with chipped teeth and concussions?

I know money might be a problem but we can do heaps of fundraisers like crazy hair day, a sausage sizzle and many more to raise money to buy new netball rings, the Monday netball team could organise this.

In conclusion I think we should get new netball rings because it will benefit our safety and not getting hurt and it will also benefit the school netball team by practising with them and will hopefully increase our wins.

Highway Matthew Bathman - Grade 3/4 One day a truck was on a Highway it was delivering Highway apples to a farm. It was late at night. The truck flipped and the farmer was covered in apples and everyone slipped and fell. Everyone cleaned up. A few people ate more than they picked up.

Sienna Nelson - Prep On the weekend my cousins came over for a play date. I fell off the swing and landed on my face.

The Kitten Charlize Cowley - Grade 1/2 On the holidays I am going to Hannah’s house and we will play with her new kitten. It’s name is Twistie. Her cat died at the age of 19. We cried because we were sad. Hannah is happy now because she has another kitten. The kitten does not bite kids and I will get the first hold and play with it and put it in the pram and take the kitten for a walk. It will get used to walking on the lead. It’s all good fun.

Giraffe Jack Leigh - Grade 1/2 A giraffe is a mammal. A giraffe has to bend it’s legs out to drink. A giraffe has to curl his tongue around a tree to get to leaves. The tallest giraffe has to be the leader. The giraffe lives in Africa in dry grassy land and tree. The giraffe has long eye lashes to they shade their eye. The giraffe has little black horns.

Netball Notes Compiled by Brownyn Walker

This week’s finals again started again with our B Grade side and they once again delivered. B Grade took a comfortable 11 goal win to beat Werribee Centrals for the first time this season and go straight into the GDFL Grand Final on 13th September! A Grade had tough fought win to come over the top of Inverleigh in the last quarter to score themselves another week of finals. They face a very strong Bell Post Hill next Saturday and are hoping to produce the upset of the season and score a Grand Final position. Unfortunately the 2014 season has finished for our D Grade team who fought really hard but couldn’t quite get over the line against a very strong East Geelong team.

Come along and support our A Grade side next week at St Albans Football Netball Club 212 St Albans Rd, Thompson:

Saturday 6th September – A Grade v Bell Post Hill at 2.30pm

A Grade Winchelsea 35 def Inverleigh 32

Lucky, lucky, lucky win. Our defenders worked tirelessly the whole game and kept us in it. The attacking line up, no matter what combination just couldn’t find any connection. We looked like we had the opportunities to score and get ahead but unforced errors and some calls that didn’t go our way was costing us the lead. We scored 7 in the first to their 8 and 6 to their 10 in the second quarter. The half time score of 13- 18.

In our normal fashion we had a great 3rd quarter scoring 11- 7. Both goalers were putting up the shots and with accuracy but we were still struggling to find a connection for an easy passage of play. Hayley Birch, Leanna Hosking and Janelle Birch each took an intercept that helped us catch them and starved their goalers of a shot. We didn’t have too many bad stats this quarter but struggled to find free flowing netball. We were only down by 1 and we were coming off a good run.

The defensive work was crucial this

quarter as we needed to keep the momentum going. All 7 players were committed and chased up every single ball. Eventually we were getting tips, deflections and intercepts. Unfortunately the attackers were struggling to find the legs to run attack and defense and we were making some silly errors. The goalers missed some crucial shots at very important times allowing the ball to come barreling back into Inverleigh’s attack. Fortunately, our whole court defense held strong, didn’t allow Inverleigh to score and kept giving our attackers more chances. The hard work paid off and we finally gained a break with about 4 minutes to go in the last quarter. Everyone dug deep, particularly our defensive line of Janelle Birch, Leanna Hosking and Alisha Adams and we took away the win with an 11 to 6 last quarter.

Best Players: Janelle Birch, Leanna Hosking and Alisha Adams

B Grade Winchelsea 35 def Werribee Centrals 24

We were yet to beat Werribee this season so we knew that today was going to be a tough and competitive game. Our starting lineup was one that Werribee hadn’t seen from and ee knew that the ‘experienced’ combination was one that was going to settle us in the game. With the versatile players we had on the bench we had the changes needed to counter act what Werribee were going to throw at us.

It was a nervous start for Werribee with them finding it really hard to find their goal circle and an early missed goal. Unfortunately we looked just as nervous with the first goal taking 1 minute and a half minutes. Both our goalers were accurate and once Belinda Czerniawski found the space to hold the feeders were finding it easy to feed in. Angie Mawson and Karly Honner shared the center passes taking leaps over the line to take the pass. Meg Royal had a nervous start with some passes not finding their target but made some nice long leads down court and hit the circle edge. The defenders played

tight and did not let the attackers gain much space, keeping them particularly high in the goal ring. There wasn’t a lot of intercepts or deflections but Werribee was turning over the ball due to the pressure. We had a small lead at quarter time, 9-6.

Belinda again held beautifully in the second and because of this holding, was the dominant target for all 3 feeders. She shot all our goals this quarter with 90% accuracy. Angie started to find the short sharp movement needed to take the Centre passes with ease and this created sharper movement for all the attackers. Our defense tightened up as Sara Groves and Bron Walker took 1 intercept each and we deflected 5 passes. Monique Bulte and Sam McKenszie were right on target playing excellent defense and recovering to take 5 rebounds collectively. Both teams doubled their score and this gave us a more comfortable lead of 5 goals 18-13.

Sarah Todd’s fast legs was the change that we needed in the Wing Attack position and Makayla Bulte went back on into Wing Defence. Our goalers started to slip with accuracy and stopped offering for each other so took a lot of pressure shots. Our center passes were shared because Werribee started to play a press but it only affected us for the first pass but then we broke it easily. We threw 3 passes away, with 2 coming from our defensive end. The new line up needed to find their rhythm and we needed to just be patient. Our circle defenders continued to dominate with rebounds, making sure that any missed goals from Werribee would end up in our hands. We managed to push the lead out a little more and was heading into the last quarter 25-17.

We reshuffled again both at the break and during a late injury time, giving players the opportunity to give everything and come off when they were spent. We knew that we could play any combination and be just as successful as the first 3 quarters. The mid courters fed just as crisp as they had the whole game. We were having no trouble delivering the ball into the ring because the holds and movement was well timed but accuracy was slightly down this

quarter. We were not giving up and the defensive pressure was still there creating two turnovers and three deflections. Monique took all 3 rebounds this quarter and even drove down court to take a second pass. All our hard work paid off because we won the game convincingly 35- 24 and are now in the GRAND FINAL! GO BLUES!

Best Players: Sam McKenzie, Monique Bulte and Belinda Czerniawski

D Grade East Geelong 26 def Winchelsea 24

We had a bit of a nervous start allowing East Geelong came out firing and take the jump and score the first couple of goals. Once we settled in and our centre court players found the circle we were able to feed with more accuracy and give our goalers some good opportunities. Amanda Partridge was making some great position but unfortunately our conversion wasn’t great. East Geelong had a very strong tall goal shooting target and they found her quite easily this quarter. We managed peg them back a bit and went into the first change down 5 to 8.

Some positional changes were made at quarter time in our centre court and our defensive end. Holly McFarlane continued to make some great drives onto the circle and deliver the ball with accuracy. Our defensive end created a few more turnovers and put some real pressure on East Geelong’s goalers forcing them to miss a few shots. We rebounded well in the circle and drove the ball through the centre court well. Unfortunately some tough umpiring decisions took the ball from us in our goal circle and a few missed shots had us down by four at half time, 12 to 16.

The third quarter we again moved the ball well in our attacking end with Holly McFarlane leading the charge in Wing Attack, however a few unforced errors gave East Geelong some opportunities. Our defensive combination of Cheralee Warren and Kelly Rochford had the East Geelong goaler’s rattled, forcing them off their spot and making them take some long shots. Both the defenders rebounded well and made sure any missed shots were ours. Unfortunately all the defensive work we were doing had its toll on our ability to drive the ball into our attacking end and we turned over a lot of ball. We went into the last quarter down 16 to 22 with a

real risk of letting East Geelong run away with it.

We put everything out there in the last quarter knowing we had nothing to lose. Kelly Rochford went out into Goal Defense and created some much needed drive through the centre court while continuing to put strong defensive pressure on the East Geelong goalers. We made a massive come back and perhaps may have come over the top of East Geelong if as Lesley Mathison said, “we were playing 15 minute quarters”. Defensive pressure was key to the comeback, we just weren’t letting anything through and kept East Geelong to only four goals this quarter. Our attacking end was getting tired but pushed through to fight it out right until the final whistle. Hold your heads high girls you gave it everything.

Best Players: Kelly Rochford, Holly McFarlane and Amanda Partridge

Blues News Anthony Coxon

The Winchelsea Blues senior football were unable to advance past the first round of finals action at St Albans on Sunday August 24th.Coming up against a strong East Geelong side meant Winchelsea had to be on their game from the start of the match.

Inaccurate kicking by the Blues saw their chances slowly slip away even though they carried an 8 point lead into the first break.

A shoulder injury earlier in the match to coach David Mensch meant his impact on the game was minimal.

Unfortunately the Blues could only manage 2 goals in each half conceding an 8 goal margin to the fast finishing East Geelong team.

A sickening blow saw Kane Bonner leave the field in the third term with facial fractures, we wish Kane well for a speedy recovery.

Lewie Hollmer finished off his season with another outstanding performance as did the consistent Brad MacKenzie and Steven Oliver. They were supported by Joel Tipping, Byron Mathison and Chris Giuricin.

East Geelong 1.5-11 5.9-39 9.9-63 13.10-88

Thanks to all the supporters for making their way to support the boys and lets look towards bigger and better things for the Blues in 2015.

Last Monday Night at the GDFL Whitley Medal night Winchelsea Footballers Brad MacKenzie and Tim VanderKlooster were named in the 2014 GDFL team of the year. This is a great reward for the two backmen who have been the catalyst for many rebounds from our defensive 50s all year.

The Vote count will take place on Sunday September 14 with all grades starting with the juniors at 10:00am and Presentation Night will be held Saturday September 20.
