Are you a Star writer? - or would like to be?

When asked to write something for the Star, the common reply is “I can’t write.”

An attempt to change the “can’t do” idea is the Writers’ Workshop in October, organised by the Star.

The course will run over 4 weekly sessions and is fully sponsored by the Star, so NO FEE TO PARTICIPANTS.

Workshop dates and times will be agreed by those participating.

We are fortunate to have Janet Brown, who wrote the article “Are you a Star writer” in last week’s Star, facilitating the workshops.

Janet Brown is a writer whose work has been published since the early 1990s. Her short stories and essays are published in anthologies and literary journals in Australia and the US and have won prizes in Australia and the UK.

As a freelance writer and editor, her articles are published in various major

newspapers and magazines. She writes fiction and non-fiction, has a Master of Arts in Creative Writing, and writes plays and other scripts. Janet teaches writing courses and workshops and assesses other writers’ manuscripts. Since 2006 Janet and her husband have been living on a small farm at Gherang.

Mr Wall has accepted a position as Chief Executive Officer of Maribyrnong City Council.

Mayor, Cr Rose Hodge, thanked Mr Wall for his work as Surf Coast Shire Council’s CEO.

“We congratulate Stephen on his achievement and, while we are sad to see him leave we certainly recognise that he has a significant opportunity,” Cr Hodge said.

“Stephen has been very much a part of the Surf Coast community, which has been greatly appreciated. He has left Council in a strong position and we wish him all the best on the next stage of his career.”

Mr Wall thanked Councillors, Surf Coast Shire Council staff and the community for their support over his tenure.

“I will be leaving with mixed emotions as I have really enjoyed working with and being part of the Surf Coast community.

“This is however an outstanding career opportunity and important challenge that I can’t refuse. It has been rewarding working for a dynamic and capable Council and wonderful community, as well as working with highly professional staff.”

Cr Hodge said Council would shortly start work to recruit Mr Wall’s replacement. Mr Wall will finish work at Surf Coast Shire Council on Friday 17 October.

This terrific annual event will once again be held at the Leisure Time Centre (LTC) on Monday, October 27th, between 10am and 1.30pm, with the usual format of awards, presentations, music and fun on the ‘good neighbour , good citizen’ theme. 10 district schools have been invited to participate this year, so we’re expecting a good crowd for the day. Due to the (inexplicable & sad) disbanding of the Police bands – Code !, Show Band and Pipe Band, all of which we have enjoyed and appreciated over the years - we have booked a youthful Geelong band “Iron and Clay” to engage the kids and entertain us all. ‘Policeman Pete’, ‘Constable T.Bear’ and perhaps ‘Waddles’, the (Villawood properties) platypus will also contribute to the fun of the day.

We are hoping to have Sgt Rob Noggler from Geelong to engage the attending students (and the rest of us!) on aspects of ‘cyber safety’ which can affect us all. A reputable show has also been booked to do a knowledge based ‘show and tell’ about the reptiles who share our world and how best to engage with them.

‘Our own’ Sgt Gleeson is arranging the display of Police and emergency service vehicles on the school oval for the kids (of all ages….) to inspect during the break, so we’re hoping for fine weather this year!

The Winchelsea Lions Club will be assisting in many ways (as they always do)! – and will have their famous Chuck Wagon on site to provide lunch for band members, dignitaries and visitors.

Members of the community are encouraged, and very welcome, to attend the School’s Day – acknowledge the award recipients – including the Memorial Sgt John Rowley award - and enjoy morning tea – all for a gold coin donation for the morning tea! It doesn’t get much better than that!

So please come along and support YOUR Neighbourhood Watch, Police and the students from Winchelsea and other district primary schools. We hope that it will be an interesting, fun and memorable day for everyone who attends.

2014 Good Neighbour AwardAs most readers will know, this annual and quite prestigious award is presented at our School’s Day, and we ask that you all give some thought to nominating someone who, you believe, really ‘fits the bill’. There are many community members out there who do so much good work for others which often goes unnoticed and is not acknowledged. This is YOUR chance to have a Good Neighbour acknowledged, recognized and rewarded, so get thinking! A nomination form is available in this publication, at the Police Station and the Post Office.

SO PUT OCTOBER 27TH IN YOUR DIARY NOW, MAKE YOUR NOMINATION AND JOIN US FOR THIS ‘FEEL GOOD’ EVENT!

If you are able to assist with morning tea, or the setting up and ‘dismantling’ of the venue on the day prior to, and after, the event please contact me, Beryl Read or Merle Rigby, or other NHW members for details, or just turn up to the LTC on Sunday afternoon (26th)!

Church NewsSt Thomas’ ChurchTuesday August 25th Parish Council 7:30pm: Wednesday 26th 10 am Guild followed by guild communion service at 11:15 am 1pm Inter-church prayer at the Uniting church. Sunday the 31st of August at 11am will be a combined Anglican Parish service followed by a bring & share luncheon. Our guest preacher will be the Rev’d John Minotti. All welcome. Monday September 1st 10am Mainly Music in the hall.

Coming events for your diaries!Tuesday September the 2nd 11am Communion and Worship Hesse Lodge.

Saturday September the 6th is our annual pre-fathers day breakfast in the church hall. This year our special guests are Ashwani and Sukoon Bedi from our local Supermarket. I have been told that Sukoon is going to share with us their experience of migrating to Australia and choosing to settle here amongst us in Winchelsea and take on the supermarket. Ashwani and his whole extended family have become popular local business people in our town and it will be fascinating to hear something of their story. Additionally Maureen King will head up the women’s team in serving breakfast for the local fathers. You don’t need to be a member of any of the churches to come this will be a purely social occasion and opportunity to spoil our local dads. The cost is $10 per-head, not bad for a cooked breakfast!

If you missed the Inter-church dinner on Friday night you missed a great night and an amazing speaker we had a good crowd and raised a healthy amount for the cause of SRI (Special Religious Instruction which was Formerly called CRE) in the schools. Vicki has offered to return to speak on the position of Women in the Middle East it might be for the pre-mothers day breakfast next year, so watch this space.

New service arrangements for St Thomas’ Church. After three years of running various services at St Thomas’ including family services and combined services with the Uniting church our church parish committee and I

have decided it’s time to make some new arrangements. The family services have become very popular with the children in our parish and our more mature members have graciously allowed us to focus on developing these child friendly innovative services every fourth Sunday, which we will definitely continue each month. We are now going to set aside every first Sunday to run a traditional Anglican prayer book, robed service, which will only use hymns and not use the data projector. This is a decision to care for and value our mature, faithful and gracious people. However we are also planning on developing services on the second Sunday to offer what I am calling “Worship for Today” which will use a contemporary yet still Anglican service style, using up to date worship and video clips. We love having combined services with the Uniting Church but now on four third Sundays a year we will go there and they will begin to worship with us here, on fifth Sundays from the 30th of November. This will also mean they can join with us for the shared meal following these 11am services. If this all sounds confusing I hope the following table will clarify, but please just remember from September at 9am every Sunday there will be a service at St Thomasevery week, (apart from four specially well pre-announced weeks). People of all ages are always welcome at them all! If we were a larger congregation we could offer these different service styles every week but being in a small community this offers us another way forward! But why not come and support your local churches as we seek to faithfully serve God and worship his Son our Saviour Jesus Christ in Winchelsea in 2014 and into the future!

So Welcome to our All Age Services at 9am: 1st Sundays Traditional Holy Communion. * 2nd Sundays H.C “Worship for Today”. * 3rd Sundays H.C Blend of Old and New. * 4th Sundays Creative Extra Child Friendly Family Services. * *With Morning Tea Following Our Services. 5th Sundays 11am Combined parish and churches service**. **A Community Bring and Share Luncheon follows this service.

God bless, Rev’d Wendy Gravolin.

St John’s ChurchThank you to everyone who attended the Inter-Church Annual Dinner at St Thomas’s on Friday night. The guest speaker Vicki provided an amazing insight into her world, growing up as a Muslim and her journey to become a Christian. Vicki then told us of her experiences when she worked as a missionary in the Middle East, giving us a view of another world that we do not observe here in Australia. The funds raised for the night will assist in providing Teachers and Students books and resources for the SRI program in our local Primary School. Thank you also for the donations for the leaving collection for Vicki.

Father Herman had a busy evening on Saturday; he welcomed Alyssa Kate, through the Sacrament of Baptism into our community. It was a joyful Mass with Alyssa’s family and friends in attendance. Before Mass, Father Herman spoke to four of our young parishioners, Tamykah, Lucas, Eve and Declan who then participated in receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The children after Mass enjoyed receiving their certificates and having their photo taken with Father Herman.

Diary Dates.Mass will be celebrated at Bannockburn at 10a.m. on Saturday the 6th of September to celebrate the birth of Mary.

Father’s Day Mass; Dad’s, grandfathers, uncles etc are invited to join us when Father Herman will bless all of the Dads and there will be a small present for each one, Saturday the 6th of September, at 6pm Mass in Winchelsea.

September: Father Herman will conduct Adult Faith classes at Meredith during September, more info later.

Profile - The Globe TheatreStatement of Significance from Heritage Victoria. The Globe Theatre was built in Winchelsea in 1926-27 as a picture theatre and concert hall. Constructed by the Lawrence family, it provided a venue for the local talent, Marjorie Lawrence, to perform. Lawrence, who became an internationally acclaimed soprano, gave her farewell concert in the building in 1928, prior to studying in Paris, and gave her first return concert there in 1939. The theatre was also used for movie screenings, weddings, dances and horticultural shows. In 1946 the theatre was acquired by the Winchelsea Shire Council. In 1990, management of the theatre was taken over by the local Lions Club. In 2004, the Globe Theatre Committee of Management was formed and are the current administrators.

The simple, hall-like building has a main broad gable roof and a smaller gable to the front, both of which terminate in eaves along the sides of the building. At the front, a bold, bracketed, stepped parapet conceals the building behind. The original skillion verandah across the front facade was replaced by one of similar form in 1992. Paired ventilation stacks dominate the ridge line of the main roof. The original portions of the building are clad with galvanised iron sheeting to dado level, folded to reflect strapped horizontal boards. The upper walls are clad with strapped cement sheets. Double hung, paned windows with segmental arched pediments above, line the sides of the hall, and paned windows and ticket

openings flank the central front entrance. The interior of the main hall has a coved, decorative pressed metal ceiling, with pressed metal ceiling roses and ventilation openings. An original landscape scenery back drop remains in place at the rear of the stage. Interior walls of the foyer and the hall have timber dados, strapped cement sheet wall cladding and pressed metal ceilings.

The original dressing rooms at the rear of the building have been replaced by a brick addition. The Globe Theatre, Winchelsea is of architectural and historical significance to the State of Victoria.

Why is it significant? The Globe Theatre, Winchelsea is of historical significance for its association with Marjorie Lawrence, who became the leading dramatic soprano for the Paris Opera Company and also triumphed in New York, performing with the Metropolitan Opera.

The Globe Theatre, Winchelsea is of architectural significance as a small, intact example of a theatre built in a Victorian country town. The building retains much of its early form and original decoration, including a rare surviving early scenery backdrop.

The Globe Theatre, Winchelsea is of scientific (technical) significance for its use of galvanised iron folded sheeting as a form of cladding. This form of cladding would appear to be highly unusual.

Maintaining The Globe Theatre’s safetySurf Coast Shire Director Infrastructure, Chris Cowley. “Council and the Globe Theatre Committee of Management take their responsibilities to ensure the building is safe seriously. Council commissions registered builders to conduct regular condition audits of all of its buildings. Recently, an asbestos audit of all buildings was completed and as part of this process, the roof and gables at the back of the Globe Theatre were replaced. Asbestos in the projection room is due for removal by the end of August, with access to the room restricted until this work is done.

“A disability access audit of the building has also been conducted, with upgrades including an accessible toilet and improvements to emergency exits completed. Council recognises the challenges in retrofitting public buildings to meet modern accessibility standards and annual funding is provided to meet these needs.

“Fire facilities including extinguishers and fire blankets are inspected annually by the CFA. The Globe Theatre also has evacuation procedures reviewed every six months and a full safety inspection is done annually with any pressing issues addressed.”

Annalisa currently resides in Melbourne, and her varied program will include simple and quirky English folk song, a couple of Aria, and songs from popular musicals. Annalisa will be accompanied by local pianist, John Bumford, and as a prelude to the musical program, Philomena will provide a sumptuous morning tea from 10.00am.

Bookings are highly advised, due to the dramatic growth in popularity of this Winchelsea event. Phone 0419 535490 to reserve your place.

...Who, What, Where, When (continued) WHAT CHEESES ME OFFDog PooMy wife slammed the door on her return from picking the girls up from school…

‘Not happy dear… ?’

After a short pause… “Dog poo…, there is dog poo all over the footpaths” she said.

‘Who walks their dog and lets their dog ‘poo’ on the footpath…. and leave it there?’

I have been walking my dogs prior to sunrise.. so haven’t noticed.. but now the mornings are getting lighter... she’s right! There is dog poo scattered all over the footpaths up Armytage St, Hesse, and Cressy Roads.. then along Main Road, in front of the Post Office.

Not big Labrador poo.. but ‘little dog’ poo. If you have a ‘little dog’ and walk around the footpaths in Winch… would you mind picking up your dogs poo !

RoadworksThe length of time it is taking to complete the road to Waurn Ponds and the road duplication in Winchelsea.

Why can’t Winslow Construction ( who is contracted for the town duplication ) hire double, triple or even quadruple the number of workers and machinery and complete the job in a quarter of the time so residents can get a bit of peace and their town back

As for the road to Waurn Ponds I think the Pyramid of Giza was finished in less time than this road.

Everyone needs to take proactive steps to boost their immune system to give them the best chance to prevent or fight colds and flu’s. Here are a few steps you can take to help you with this.

1. Lower your stress levels- Stress hormones result in the immune system receiving signals to slow down, leading to more infection etc, so take time to manage your stress through exercise, meditation, relaxation or whatever works for you!

2. Improve your nutrition- White flour, white sugar and table salt stress the immune system, so make sure you continue to eat well, getting lots of fruit and vegetables. Supplements such as omega-3 fatty acid (i.e. Fish Oil), a probiotic and vitamin D will enhance your immune function also.

3. Increase your water intake- We need around 2-3 litres of water per day. A

hydrated body will work much more effectively than one that is not. So aim to drink more water per day, it can be hard in winter as we are often not as thirsty with the cold weather, but we still definitely need to keep our water intake up!

4. Increase sunshine- we need around 20 minutes of good sunshine per day to be getting enough vitamin D. Of course there is less sunlight in winter so many people tend to become deficient in vitamin D as a result. This lowers immune system function. If you are not getting the required amount of sunshine then consider taking a vitamin D supplement.

5. Have good quality sleep-When we are sleeping our body is healing and regenerating. Your body requires 6-8 hours sleep per night with the best hours between 10pm and 6am.

6. Exercise each day-exercise helps improve the immune system function

by reducing stress hormone levels in the blood.

7. Have regular Chiropractic Adjustments-Chiropractic helps to ensure your nervous system if functioning optimally and as a result enhance your immune system function and the self healing ability of your body.

Submissions to The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page. Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted. Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

Dice it!Dice games are fun and one of the easiest and cheapest ways to entertain children of all ages. Dice games are not only an activity the whole family can do together but can also be a great learning tool. Dice games can be very educational, helping children in the skills of number recognition, adding, subtracting and in young children the ability of losing...nicely.

Enoy some of these more basic dice games, which can be adapted to suit every age group. Enjoy!

You will need two or five dice (for game three only).

Game One - Number combinationsRoll the dice and put them in order to make the highest number possible. For example if you roll a 4 and a 6 your best answer would be 64. Share the dice with the other playes with the player making the highest number the winner. You can also vary the game by combining numbers to make the smallest number.

Game Two - Number bingoSimple and easy game young children will enjoy. Each player picks a number between 2-12. Roll the dice then add the numbers together. The player who guessed the correct number is the winner. You can adapt this for younger children by using only one dice.

Game Three - Stuck in the mudThe aim of the game is to achieve the highest score. You can only score on a roll which does not include the numbers 2 or 5. Any dice which show a 2 or a 5 becomes ‘stuck in the mud’.

Choose a player to start and roll your dice. If you have rolled a 2 or 5, you do not score any points for the throw. If you have not rolled a 2 or 5, add up the total of the dice and remember it or keep a score card.

Set aside any 2s and 5s and throw the remaining dice. Again, if you have rolled a 2 or 5 you fail to score. Throws without a 2 or 5 are added to your previous total.

Continue in this way until all your dice are ‘stuck in the mud’. Write down your score and pass the dice to the next player. Agree on the number of rounds and at the end total up each players score. The player with the highest total is the winner.

Netball Notes Compiled by Brownyn Walker

FINALS FEVER!

We went into the first week of finals with three teams in, B Grade having a double chance and starting us off on Saturday, while A & D Grade had to win to stay in on Sunday. B Grade started us off by smashing Bell Post Hill by 15 goals, given they beat us just a few weeks ago this was a fantastic effort. D Grade gave us a heart stopper on Sunday, holding on to beat North Geelong by 3 goals. A Grade finished off the trifecta with a thumping 12 goal win against Thomson, a team we haven’t beaten this year. Come along and support the girls next week at St Albans Football Netball Club 212 St Albans Rd, Thompson. The games for the weekend are as follows:

Saturday 30th August B Grade v Werribee at 1.30pm

Sunday 31st August D Grade v East Geelong at 11.30am A Grade v Inverleigh at 2.30pm

A Grade Winchelsea 60 def Thomson 48

After last weeks game we knew that if all nine players played to that same standard we have a good chance of winning today. We reviewed the stats from our previous encounter with Thomson and we knew what we had to fix in order to take the game. We had a really good start, scoring the first goal and forcing a turn over on their centre in our attack end at times we were a little to patient with the ball but once we worked out timing it was free flowing. Tahlia Berg did a great job to get out for the centre passes and Chloe Wilson and Ciara Stewart continued to work well in the ring with great accuracy. Leanna Hosking and Hayley Birch tried to block the transverse line but Thomson were finding it to easy to find the big pass into their massive goal shooting target.

Janelle Birch was contesting the ball under the post and when she did get atop made sure it was converted into a goal. We went into second quarter even-Stevens.

We made no changes to our line up because we were starting to find enough flow. We had a few opportunities to take a good lead but made some careless errors

and let them back in, our defensive line up was starting to work out how to slow down the play but it just took too long because Thomson managed to stick with us and we went into half time a draw.

The pressure was put onto all seven players to step it up. If we were to win this game we needed to make sure that every error they made cost them a goal. Elly Castles came into Wing Defence in an attempt to shut the Wing Attack down . Katrina Filice came into Goal Shooter and Ciara Stewart moved out to Wing Attack. Our new line up came out firing and did as they were asked. We our scored Thomson 22 to 9 this quarter. Janelle started getting lots of tips and intercepts as keeper, Alicia Adams came through with intercepts and with Elly’s distance caused three held balls. The attackers combined beautifully, made some sharp moves and had some great holds. Hayley and Ciara fed the ball with precision and the goalers finished off. The score had blown out to 49 to 37.

We continued to play with the determination that we played the third quarter, everything just seemed to worked. For eight minutes of the last quarter everyone gave it their all. We ran out of puff in the last seven minutes and let Thomson get a run of goals on us, but our massive third quarter effort allowed us to take a comfortable win.

Best Players: Hayley Birch, Ciara Stewart and Janelle Birch

B Grade Winchelsea 46 def Bell Post Hill 31

We warmed up like a winning team and there was no doubt we were going to win today. We started with a very experienced attacking line up and Bell Post Hill didn’t know how to stop that. Angie Mawson had some spectacular passes into Belinda Czerniawski, who shot with confidence and accuracy. Captain and Goal Attack Karly Honner did the smart work, and also fed Belinda well, but put the shot up when needed. Our defensive line up took a couple of minutes to warm into the game but once they did they caused Bel Post HIll to turn over the ball. With Meg Royal’s safe hands in the centre we had a handy lead of seven goals going in to the

first change. We made one change with Bron Walker taking the Wing Defence bib because the Wing Attack needing to be shut down. Bron did an excellent job on her and took her out of the game. Monique Bulte and Sam McKenzie worked well together in the ring, making sure the high pass to Bell Post Hill’s massive goal shooter wasn’t an uncontested pass. The attackers continued to do their job and at times it looked effortless. We had a very good lead of eleven goals heading into the second half.

Because Bron, Meg and Angie had worked so hard and we had a strong lead we gave them all a rest. Sarah Todd came on to Wing Attack, Makayla Bulte came into centre and Sara Groves returned from injury and took the Win Defence bib. This change provided us with a faster line up which meant we could increase our goaling opportunities. Everyone played with tight defence and a crisp attacking mindset. With Belinda presenting into the goal ring, finishing it off for us, our confidence had increased and we knew we were heading into the last quarter on top of our opposition.

Although we lost this quarter by one goal it gave us another opportunity try to out another combination and keep us on our toes. Sarah Todd took the GA bib, Karly took a well earned rest and Bron moved into Wing Attack. The errors we made were due to fatigue and being a little to comfortable with the score line. Monique and Sam put a lot of pressure on the goalers and forced them to miss quite a few shots. The defenders worked the ball down to the transverse line, we just got caught standing still and not finishing off our leads.

Very impressed with the win and our confidence is now sky high as we take on Werribee next week.

Best Players: Belinda Czerniawski, Monique Bulte and Samantha McKenzie

Cheralee Warren, Tilly Campana and Kelly Rochford provided many turnovers but we struggled to move the ball through the centre court and find our goaler’s. Amanda Partridge back from injury converted well once we got the ball to her she moved off her spot and bit and our centre court weren’t making it to the circle to provide the best feeds. We went into the quarter time break trailing by 1.We came out firing in the second and finally started to find the goaler’s and put the score on the board. An injury to our coach Jodie Mawson brought Jackie Steere to the centre court, who worked hard to come into the game mid quarter. We outscored North Geelong by 5 goals this quarter and went in to the second half with a four goal lead.

Jodie came back into the game in to Wing Attack and Holly McFarlane took the centre position while all other players stayed as they were. Unfortunately we let North

Geelong back in this quarter, once again making hard work of our attack all the way down the court. A tough umpiring decision saw Tilly sit off for two goals leaving us a player short. Fortunately we hung on to a two goal lead going into the last quarter. Josie MacDonald took the Wing Defence position from Tilly and Cheralee and Kelly swapped over in defence. The last quarter was a real heart stopper with North Geelong getting within a goal, however our experienced line up kept their heads and we were able to come away with a three goal win.
