Janne Bowen, Manager of Regional Operations presented the awards. Murray Bennett did a great job as MC. Janne had been a volunteer in Colac SES before joining the SES Staff so has an understanding of what Volunteers come across in their line of duty. John Carter received a 5 year certificate. John came to Winchelsea after being a volunteer in Anglesea CFA for 25 years, and 8 years as a community ambulance officer also at Anglesea, so is able to assess situations from all angles and can often diffuse difficult situations with one of his famous “one Liners”. He is a member of Winchelsea Lions Club. Sue Dunstan (affectionately known as Nanna) received a 15 year certificate and medal. Sue has been a very active member juggling her work, family and being a member of Gnarwarre CFA. Her greatest asset is her caring nature and the knack of finding anyone at an incident who needs a shoulder to cry on, some of whom she is still in contact with to this day. Wayne Johns received a 15 year certificate and medal. Wayne is what’s known as a quiet achiever and also possesses a very dry wit. His ability to assess the scene and draw up a plan of action is second to none. Wayne also juggles a very busy home life and CFA commitments Last but not least Leigh Marshman received a 20 year certificate and medal. During his time in the SES Leigh has been deputy controller and is now in his 4th stint as Controller - as well as running a successful business, the family farm, an active member of Wurdale CFA and raising a family. I am sure the power behind the throne is his wife Virginia!! Leigh was instrumental in negotiating with the Shire to obtain the site for the new HQ on the highway. He is totally unflappable and can always be relied on for his cool and rational assessment of the situation. So as you can see this band of 16 or so volunteers are well equipped to handle whatever may come their way, and the Community can be very grateful people like this that are prepared to give up valuable time to train and serve their community. Judging by these people you can never be too busy to be involved. In 2013 The CWA of Victoria celebrated 85 years heralding an exciting new era by providing new opportunities to open new evening/day branches around the State. The opening of new branches especially evening branches has enabled those women who work away from the home during the day, or who are busy on the farm to join the Association, as well as mothers of young children who are looking for “me” time. The initiative of the Country Women’s Association to open branches has been greeted with much enthusiasm by women of all ages. The Association is a diverse, vibrant, busy organisation offering friendship and personal development, as well as supporting communities through projects to improve the lives of women and children in both local communities as well as in developing countries mainly through our support in the South Pacific Areas.

The CWA is an important lobby group to Government on issues as important and diverse as childcare, postal services and road funding. CWA not only allows you the opportunity to extend yourself in areas of craft, performing arts, cookery, photography, literature and public speaking, it also offers training and opportunities in leadership.

Our Social Issues theme each year enables our members to learn about issues and where appropriate to act to try and raise awareness in their communities. In 2014 the Social Issues theme is “Suicide-Raising Awareness in our Community”. The fact that so many women have been members for 40, 50 and 60 years is testament to the wonderful friends you make, and the fulfilment you achieve working with the Country Women’s Association.

We welcome all women to come and join a group in friendship. Come by yourself or bring a friend. The CWA also have Junior members which are growing in popularity. Polwarth Group is our local group and takes in Colac and district. Branches in our Group are Apollo Bay, Barongarook,

Birregurra, Colac, Colac Night Owls, Dreeite, Irrewarra and North Pomboneit. We would love to see Winchelsea as our next new branch.

An information evening is to be held on Wednesday, September 17th at 7.30 pm at the Winchelsea Fire Station, Harding Street Winchelsea. We welcome women of all ages to come along and learn about our wonderful Association.

Are you a Star writer? - or would like to be? When asked to write something for the Star, the common reply is “I can’t write.”

An attempt to change the “can’t do” idea is the Writers’ Workshop in October, organised by the Star.

The course will run over 4 weekly sessions and is fully sponsored by the Star, so no fee to participants.

Workshop dates and times will be agreed by those participating.

We are fortunate to have Janet Brown, who wrote the article “Are you a Star writer” in last week’s Star, facilitating the workshops.

Janet Brown is a writer whose work has been published since the early 1990s. Her short stories and essays are published in anthologies and literary journals in Australia and the US and have won prizes in Australia and the UK.

As a freelance writer and editor, her articles are published in various major newspapers and magazines. She writes fiction and non-fiction, has a Master of Arts in Creative Writing, and writes plays and other scripts. Janet teaches writing courses and workshops and assesses other writers’ manuscripts. Since 2006 Janet and her husband have been living on a small farm at Gherang.

Letter to the EditorThank you to the Star

On behalf of our family, I would like to thank the Star and in particular Mick O’Mara for the excellent article on the recent Winchelsea Fire Brigade Presentation Night held at Eastern Reserve.

The photographs and report make a wonderful keepsake of a special occasion for our family and the Winchelsea Fire Brigade.

This pretty well sums up the M.P.s of today! From an elderly Farmer.

An elderly farmer was in the Emergency Ward having stitches put in his hand, due to an accident with a piece of machinery.

The doctor carrying out the procedure struck up a conversation with the old man.

Eventually the topic got around to Politicians and their role as our leaders.

The old farmer said, “Well, you know, most Politicians are ‘Post Tortoises’.’’

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him, what a ‘Post Tortoise’ was?

The old farmer said, “When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a tortoise balanced on top, that’s a post tortoise.”

The old farmer, seeing the puzzled look on the doctor’s face, continued to explain.

“You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there, he’s elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with.”

Best explanation I’ve heard yet !!!!! Have a good day John Bader

Great Ocean Road planned closureVicRoads is planning on closing the Great Ocean Road for four days from Sunday 24 August 2014, for essential upgrade works to replace a large drainage pipe under the road.

We are really keen to ensure this message gets out to as many people as possible to minimise the impacts and inconvenience.

We are aware that this is going to mean a significant challenge for the local community and drivers travelling between Apollo Bay and Lorne.

Whilst closing the road is unavoidable, VicRoads will be running 24 hour shifts to endeavour work gets done as quickly and as safely as possible.

Church NewsSt John’s ChurchJust a reminder that the Annual Inter - Church h Dinner will be held in St Thomas’s Hall this coming Friday night, 22nd August. Commencing at 6 pm, the meal will consist of soup, casseroles and sweets and the usual cuppa. The cost is $15.00 the money raised will go towards the cost of the inter-church support for Special Religious Instruction in our local primary school. Rev’d Wendy Gravolin has organised for the visiting guest speaker Vicki Mustafa, an amazing woman with an interesting life journey to share her story with us. Everyone is welcome to attend and Wendy has suggested that we bring along our questions to ask Vicki. Hope to see you there.

Next Saturday evening at our 6p.m. Mass we will welcome Alyssa Mawson into our community with Father Herman Baptising Alyssa during Mass. As well as that four of our younger parishioners will celebrate their First Reconciliation, their second Sacrament, with Father Herman speaking to and meeting with the children before Mass, before they participate in their First Reconciliation.

If anyone would like to organise a baptism, marriage etc at our church, or in the parish, please contact Father Herman or Dianne Ritchie, the parish co-ordinator at the Parish office on a Wednesday or Friday. The phone number is 5286 1230. Please remember also that early in the New Year we will be asking for names of children who would like to prepare for their Sacramental programs of Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation. We are fortunate to have classes here in Winchelsea, or classes are available in Bannockburn if that is closer for you.

Father Herman is also organising for Adult Education classes to be held over at Meredith in the Presbytery, more information later.

St Thomas’ ChurchTuesday 19th of August 7:30 pm St Thomas Vestry meeting.

Wednesday the 20th: St Thomas Guild at 10am followed by a special guild Communion service at 11:15. 1pm Inter-church prayer at the Uniting church hall.

Friday August the 22nd 6pm Remember the inter-church dinner involving all three Winchelsea churches. Tickets at the door are $15. Our guest speaker is Vicki Mustafa who is an Australian who came from a Turkish Muslim family, not a Lebanese one as previously reported; but she did spend time serving in Lebanon as a Christian missionary during the war there. After her talk Vicki will answer questions from the floor so come prepared! Vicki is an engaging speaker.

Sunday August the 24th of August 9am is our regular All Age Family Service at St Thomas, last month we had a record number of children and they led the entire service themselves and it engaged them all. Why not come and join us this Sunday.

Monday August 25th 10am Mainly Music in the hall.

Coming events for your diaries with some changes to note!

Sunday August 31 will be a combined service at 11am at St Thomas with the other churches in the Anglican parish of Winchelsea to be followed by a “Bring and share lunch” in the Hall, all welcome. Please note, owing to some Anglican governance issues from our Synod that need to be explained, we have reluctantly postponed the intended combined service with the Uniting church for August. My apologies to John and our friends at the Uniting Church.

October the 19th at 9:30am will therefore be the next combined service when we join with the Uniting Church at Hesse street and then on November the 30th at 11am they will join with us at St Thomas’ for our service followed by a bring and share meal. Meanwhile this week we will all join together for the Inter-church dinner, catered for by all three churches.

Food for thoughtBono the lead man in the band U2 and a Christian is on record as saying that the identity of Jesus Christ, that is who he was, is the defining question for all Christians. On Sunday we considered the question, “Who do you think Jesus is?” and the impact of the answer you give to this question on our lives. Bono went on to say that he didn’t believe you could be let off easily by just saying that Jesus was a great philosopher because Jesus himself claimed to be much more than that. He claimed to be the Son of God and the messiah sent by God to save us and his world. Consequently Bono recognized that either Jesus was who he claimed to be or he was a ‘nutter’ with a delusional religious Messiah complex that was possibly worse than Charles Manson!

C.S. Lewis, the great 20th century scholar and the author of such books as “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” from The Chronicles of Narnia, began life as an avowed atheist. On coming to faith in Christ he called himself possibly Christianity’s most reluctant convert. Lewis is famous for the argument that Jesus either was who he claimed to be, or he was a lunatic, liar or worse. The evidence of Jesus teaching alone, his insistence on loving your enemies and doing good to those who hate you and parables like the “Good Samaritan” suggest to many that these are not the teachings of a raving lunatic. The quality of his life and the love which he demonstrated to those who society despised, rule out the plausibility of him being a wicked or a liar. His prayer from the cross that his heavenly father, forgive those who had put him there because they didn’t know what they were doing certainly doesn’t seem t be the cry from a wicked man’s death bed.

So who do you think Jesus Christ is? This may be the most important question you can ever consider. The gospel of Luke is a good place to start investigating, you can find it on the “bible gateway website” or come and speak to me and I will make sure you have access to a bible. Why not begin to explore this question today? It could change your life!

God bless, Rev’d Wendy Gravolin.

VicRoads has produced landscape plans with input from Surf Coast Shire Council to ensure attractive landscapes around the duplicated Princes Highway.

The beautification work focuses on the entrances to Winchelsea and paths around the highway to create an inviting environment where people will want to enjoy the outdoors.

VicRoads Project Director Tony Hedley said landscape architects were engaged to select particular species to complement the heritage values and country feel of the rural township.

“The landscape plans have been displayed during information sessions held in the town and the feedback has always been very positive.

“While removal of some Sugar Gums and Elms was necessary to allow the duplication to proceed, the use of the Callery Pear and Red Oak will ensure the historic ‘avenue’ feel created by the Elms is maintained.

”In addition to native River Red Gum and Swamp Gum around the Barwon River adding to the natural beauty of that environment, to provide an ideal transition from the farming paddocks to the west, that entrance to Winchelsea will include Silver Wattle, River Red Gum, Black She-oak, Light Wood and Black Wood.

“Many native shrubs and tussocks will also be planted in various locations throughout the project.

“Along with the 2 kilometres of new or rebuilt paths as part of this project, the new landscape will be inviting for all forms of recreation,” Mr Hedley said.

Winchelsea Ward Councillor Heather Wellington said the landscape plan would contribute to the town’s look and feel.

“The highway duplication has provided an opportunity to look at what can be done to beautify the entrances to Winchelsea and reduce maintenance costs.

“This plan has taken into account planning work that has been done in the past, while also contributing to the Growing Winchelsea project that is

now underway,” Cr Wellington said.

Winchelsea Ward Councillor Rod Nockles said it was important that the duplicated highway fit with the fabric of the town.

“We are pleased to have been able to provide input into VicRoads’ landscape plan,” Cr Nockles said.

“The plans look at elements like the new bridge over the Barwon River and how this fits into the design along with retaining walls and the path network as well as suitable plantings,” Cr Nockles said.

Landscape plans from Lennox Street to Austin Street have been completed, with plans for the section from Austin Street

Construction in Winchelsea between Lennox Street and Austin Street is expected to be complete by the end of 2014. Completion on the duplication to Deans Marsh Road, which includes the new crossing of the Barwon River and new traffic lights at Hesse Street and Deans Marsh Road, is scheduled for completion in 2016.

V/Line performance deteriorates againVictorian Greens leader Greg Barber has called on the Minister to explain V/Line’s July performance, where one-in-five Warrnambool line trains ran unacceptably late.

“It is time for the Terry Mulder to explain why V/Line is continually unable to meet its performance benchmarks,” Mr Barber said. “Was there a shortage of rolling stock, was the driver sick, was there a cow on the tracks, was there a tree across the line?

“It isn’t acceptable for our regional trains to perform so poorly month in, month out. July’s performance is even worse than last month, which was nothing to write home about.

“People across western Victoria need trains that get them where they need to be, when they need to be there.

“In 2011 V/Line provided a report explaining what they need to fix their performance and punctuality problems, but the Napthine Government has largely ignored their recommendations.

“Terry Mulder knows that the Regional Rail Link will not fix these problems, so it is time that he offer a transparent explanation to the residents of Victoria’s south-west,” Mr Barber said.

MY WEEKEND WITH DAD by Will Larcombe Grade 1/2

This weekend Dad and I are going to cut wood at our house. After that we are going to light the bonfire. If there is left over wood dad and I are going to light the inside. The next day we will go to the showgrounds and we are going to do some concreting and Stewart Stands is coming too.

ON THE WEEKEND by Klay Miller Grade 1/2

My dad and Regan and I went motorbike riding down near my friend’s paddock. Kya brought his motorbike too.

There was a steep hill and my dad watched me go up. My dad told me to go up so I did a mono. When I was going up there was a hole and I nearly fell off. I did the jump five times. Then my friend gave me five bucks.

THE SIMIAN FLU by Sam Phelps Grade 5/6

After a brief period of testing in a Gen-Sys lab near the amazon rainforest, a group of genetically modified apes have escaped from their holding chambers and into the rainforest. According to recent studies on wild apes, the modified gene has mutated into a disease.

The disease, known as the simian flu, has been found to hugely increase ape intelligence. It enables to build rafts, small colonies, domesticate horses and make crude weapons.

As the disease is lethal to humans, and the apes are getting aggressive, it is greatly

recommended that you stay indoors when apes are passing through your town.

Disease Traits

The Simian Flu has extremely deadly traits, including dysentery, total organ failure and insanity. Although the disease is no where near pandemic stage, cure research has already begun. It is obvious to disease experts that the Simian Flu is an unusually odd disease. Unique among other diseases, the Simian Flu has been found of eliminating traits useful to humans. It has, until now, been found with a trait that has increased human intelligence.

Tight Lines by Leakey

Brian King and his family have recently returned from a holiday on Phillip Island, and with him came the biggest snapper I have ever seen. 25lb cleaned. Also some very nice king whiting.

Neil Leak and Brian Schroeter and their wives have enjoyed the New Year week-end camping at the mouth of the Ayre River . They had a successful trip catching 14

brown trout for the week-end, Neil catching one weighing 3lb 2 oz and Janet caught one weighing 2 ½ lb.

A party of 15 of our members enjoyed an evenings fishing down the Barwon River, Christmas week-end and found trout hard to catch, but Tom Stephenson caught one weighing 2lb and as the evening drew on they caught 30 eels, so all was not in vain.

Our bit of RiverA common theme in surveys conducted for the “Growing Winchelsea” project is the importance of the river as a feature of the town. The river banks provide an area for rest and recreation, a place to walk the dog, a rest area for travellers and a feature that catches the eye of many visitors to Winchelsea.

With Spring fast approaching it is time for continuing the plantings on the cleared areas and some weeding of last year’s planting. The River Care group is

organising two Sunday working bees and all interested people are welcome to come and help with the planting and weeding, even if it is for only one hour. Bring gloves and a hoe, if you have one.

WHAT CHEESES ME OFFAfter just returning from a road trip holiday up the East coast ( approx 6,000 km ) as far as Hervey Bay in Queensland and return, there were 2 standout problems with drivers on our roads.

1. IMPATIENCE Drivers who, when you are driving on the speed limit sit right up your tail and some passing over double white lines. ( I don’t know how many times I pulled over to let someone pass.) I am sure they were cursing “ Blooming Victorian tourist “.These are accidents waiting to happen.

2. INATTENTION

Drivers who still continue to be distracted by mobile devices. You see drivers who are looking down and not having their eyes or minds on the road. It only takes a few seconds to be on the other side of the road at 100 kph. Many drivers over the trip were on my side of the road.

These are 2 standout dangerous driving habits which contribute to our road toll. These need to be highlighted and stamped out. Not fines for someone who is safely 5-10km over the limit on good roads. ( I know “ it’s the law “)

Don Smith (Grumpy old ex ambo. And no I didn’t get a speeding ticket)

(Is there something that Cheeses you off ? If there is, then send it in to the star. You can leave your Cheesed off note at the IGA or you can email [email protected])

This year we moved a young peach tree for the third time. I can almost hear you say how crazy that is and, of course, you are right. This is no way to treat a fruit tree if you want a crop any time soon. So what is going on with all this changing around? Simply that gardening is a learning experience and each time we make a decision the variables, including our knowledge, have changed a bit.

It is big help to have a sense of overall design and the purposes for the different sections of your garden. That big picture generally remains reasonably constant. That means that you know where the winds come from to place your windbreaks, that paths and tracks are practical and that you view your garden from the windows and verandahs of your home to provide vistas as well as viewing the house from the garden. That said, a gardener needs to be flexible and prepared for the garden to evolve and become what is needed now and in the future.

So let’s look at our recent changes. The peach tree was planted beside an old nectarine that had been cut down because it had had its day. The following year, the old tree revived and went on to bear the most delicious fruit. The peach was replanted in another spot in the orchard which, a year later, seemed to be just the right place for our greenhouse. Out the peach came and in it went in a garden nearby. After more thought, we opted for a bigger greenhouse in a different place, leaving the orchard spot vacant. But why move the tree back there? Well, the rest of the plants in its garden are

natives and they don’t have the same watering and feeding needs as a fruit tree. Clearly more thought and planning would have prevented two of the moves but, ultimately, we have been able to adapt to new circumstances and understanding of plant needs and have not stressed over making changes.

Other changes this year have been to the shape of several gardens to facilitate mowing and to the various combinations of plants in our gardens so that like needs plants are growing together. These changes, although they are work now, will make future gardening maintenance much easier

Then there are the changes that come from the heart. I have gone back on my pledge to have no roses in our gardens at the nursery, made because of my abysmal record of pruning and caring for them in our garden at home. Roses are hardy and I love them so I simply must have some. Appropriately for a gardener, I plan to ‘turn over a new leaf’. I am starting with four ready to plant roses but I also have lots of cuttings from my friends’ roses coming along. Thinking about where to plant them brings us back to the need for forward planning for change.

At home, a once loved sandpit is never played in now. Could it become the home of some succulents which thrive in spots which drain very well? Could it be cleaned out, filled with compost and become a raised bed for vegies? Should we keep it as a sandpit, put a cover on it to

keep it clean for visiting children, maybe sit some pot plants on top? Decisions, decisions, decisions. One of the great things about gardening is that we get to make them ourselves. And we get to change them when the need or inspiration arises.

For people like me who seem to change their minds a lot in the garden, it can help to impose the ‘one month’ rule. You get inspired and have a great idea, but if it involves a lot of work and/or money, you think about it for a month before going ahead. Personally, I hate the ‘one month rule’ and always want to jump straight into a new and exciting garden project. I do, however, see its advantages and at least it is not as bad as the ‘one year rule’, which some people live by.

Change is part of the nature of a garden and is something to enjoy. It brings with it opportunities for creativity, problem solving, exercising autonomy and putting new learning into practice. It keeps you interested, involved and excited – wonderful feelings for anyone and all to be gained from gardening, be the scale large or small.

If you would like to have a copy of any of the garden notes that I have written, drop in at the nursery, 77 Dundas St Inverleigh (on the Winchelsea Road) or email me at [email protected] Until next time, happy gardening.

Submissions to The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page. Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted. Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

Netball Notes Compiled by Brownyn Walker

We hosted our neighbours and rivals Inverleigh in the last game of the season. When we travelled to Inverleigh we only managed a B Grade win so we were hoping our lead in to the finals was a much improved effort. And boy did we deliver, D Grade knocked off 2nd placed Inverleigh to score a finals position. A Grade are really hitting their straps at the right end of the season taking a comfortable ten goal win against third placed Inverleigh. B Grade are back at their best taking a comfortable 14 goal win to really cement their second place. While C Grade, 15 & Under and 13 & Under couldn’t secure a win they all put in really solid performances.

Please come along and support us during our finals campaign. All finals are played at St Albans Football Netball Club 212 St Albans Rd, Thompson. The games for the weekend are as follows:

Saturday 23rd August – B Grade at 1.30pm

Sunday 24th August – D Grade at 11.30am

– A Grade at 2.30pm

A Grade Winchelsea 45 def Inverleigh 40

What a fantastic result. We knew we were in with a real chance of taking the 4 points if we put out a good team performance. We started strong with Leanna Hosking taking 4 intercepts but we struggled to find space and convert into an immediate goal. Everyone kept pushing through to make sure that we stayed with them. We went into the 2nd 11 all.

We made some changes in the attack in an effort to move the ball with a bit more ease so that the goalers could take a low pressure shot. Katrina Filice’s introduction into the game meant that we had a nice hold in the circle and this opened up the goal third. The defenders continued to play tight defence and force some errors. Our confidence was growing even though we were trailing 23-24.

We knew that we could play better netball if we just hold the ball and throw with patience. Things just seemed to work for us in this quarter. We lead well, the movement in the ring was beautiful and our whole team defence put them under a lot of pressure and they started missing shot. We

had finally taken the lead 35-32, now we just had to hold it.

To the coaches disappointment we threw away the first two center passes but defensively got that ball back and safely into the ring. Katrina and Chloe Wilson worked so hard to protect each other and the confidence was building. Janelle Birch, Alisha Adams and Leanna Hosking worked tirelessly to wear them down and it paid off. We were all patient and made the best of every opportunity provided and as a result of this great team work from all 9 players we caused an upset and won 45- 40.

Best: Leanna Hosking, Janelle Birch and Katrina Filice

B Grade Winchelsea 43 def Inverleigh 29

Awesome team effort again by B Grade. Every combination we ran today worked. All 9 players have improved on the individual skills that have been targeted as ‘areas for improvement’ and as a result there are very few gaps in our team. We had a different combination than usual on the court and this combination was our ‘steady heads’ combo. We played to our pace and didn’t get caught up in chase netball. Angie Mawson found it easy to get the center passes and this opened up the goal circle for Belinda Czerniawski to make a lead out. Karly Honner’s smarts and Meg Royal’s accurate passes made it easy work. We were up by 2.

Bron Walker and Angie Mawson came off in the second and the fast legs of Sarah Todd took the Wing Attack bib and Makayla Bulte the Wing Defence bib. Although we struggled to get the center passes as easily as the we did in the first quarter that didn’t matter. The pace of the ball in attack was fast and crisp and Belinda and Karly made sure they converted it into a goal. Our back defensive line was making it extremely difficult for Inverleigh to get the ball into their ring. We were slowly chipping away at the GA who in the first quarter was on target. We pushed out the lead to 6 and went into half time up 25-19.

We made some major changes again in the third, but the team just adapted and we

outscored them 9-6. The defenders kept us in it with their tight work and reading of the play. Karly did just as I asked and came out hunting while Sam McKenzie took the knocks and the tips. Belinda and Sarah combined as I would have expected, with Belinda shooting at 75% and Sarah 100%. Some great feeding and effortless attacking of the ball. We had pushed out the score just as the I had asked and we were up 34-25.

A few more changes were made coming into the last. What a luxury we had today to make all these changes and still push on for a good win. We outscored them again 9-3. Defensively we smashed them and the attack end did their job to make sure we scored and Belinda’s confidence was at a season high and she even took some long shots. Excellent team effort from all 9 players and a great way to head into the finals.

Best Players: Karly Honner, Sam McKenzie and Meg Royal

C Grade Inverleigh 44 def Winchelsea 29

One of their best performance for the season against a top 5 side in Inverleigh. Down to just seven players with a number of players unavailable, the girls really worked hard as a team to keep Inverleigh’s score down and to convert what they could.

Plenty defensive pressure over the ball all the way down the court any vital turnovers. Danielle Kuchenmeister provided the “legs” in the centre court with plenty of strong drives while Kelly Steere was the steadier, making sure the ball was delivered to safe hands.

Lucy King has been a real stand out the last few weeks, taking over and really claiming her Goal shooter position. Whilst this game ends the season for our C Grade players we hope that it will be onwards and upwards for 2015 and we can put out a successful C Grade side.

Best Players: Danielle Kuchenmeister, Kelly Steere and Lucy King

D GradeWow, what a win! In a must win game we all pulled of a mammoth win defeating third placed Inverleigh to slip into the finals. With key defender Cheralee Warren and key gaoler Amanda Partridge out this week we made some very strong substitutions. Eliza Mathison returned to the club and filled the Goal shooter position beautifully while Janelle Lucas showed us all why she is a previous D Grade League Best and Fairest winner.

Our usual team transitioned to the new line up fabulously, adjusting to the faster pace and really taking it to the strong 2nd placed Inverleigh side. We were down a couple at quarter time and made some changes slotting Janelle Lucas into the centre, this provided us with a great defensive centre as well and a strong attacking line up. By half time we had the lead. We were able to make quite a few rotations which only helped us to improve in the second half. In the end we came home with a strong four goal win and we are looking forward to a strong finals series.

Best Players: Janelle Lucas, Kelly Rochford and Holly McFarlane

15 & Under Inverleigh 38 def Winchelsea 29

Wow, what a game. The girls all stepped up and played the best game of the season. Although we didn’t come away with a win, all systems ran smoothly. The girls implemented all the skills we have worked

on throughout the season, played as a team and made both of their coaches very proud. Although the final score was a nine goal deficit Inverleigh really only broke the game open late in the last quarter, there was really nothing in it up until then. We put plenty of defensive pressure on all the way down the court which allowed our goal keeper Olivia Black to pick off some really good intercepts. Rachel Boddington was a fabulous transition player providing a good “safe” option after an intercept was taken. Caitlin Burgess provided a great target in the goal circle and finished off with some great shooting.

This game really highlights the great things this team has achieved throughout the season, the improvement in every players has been massive, and if they stick together and work hard they show some really good potential. We had a really strong patch mid-season where we won four in a row, unfortunately we couldn’t sustain the winning streak but we certainly maintained the good play. Go Blues!

Best: Olivia Black, Caitlin Burgess and Rachel Boddington

13 & Under Inverleigh 37 def Winchelsea 8

A fantastic game this week by the 13 & under’s in their last game for the season against the fourth placed Inverleigh. Inverleigh were an extremely strong side and we just couldn’t match them so we chose to really enjoy the game and give the girls some valuable experience in some new positions. The girls adapted really well to being moved around and enjoyed the luxury of having a go at some new spots. Emily Steed is our only Under 13 player who will not be eligible next year, great job this week Emily and a fantastic season you have had. We hope she continues on with her netball and takes the step up to the 15 & Under competititon next year. We hope the remaining team members stay together and keeping working hard, it is amazing what six months gives a junior player, I’m sure coming back next year they will be a real competitor in the 13 and Under competition.

Best: Maddison Kattwinkel, Georgia Glynn and Amy Hobbs

The Club can be proud of the Team finishing the season the way they have. There are many people who have assisted the Team along the way - a big Thank You to you all!

SENIORSThe Winchelsea Blues are on their way to St Albans to participate in the GDFL Finals after a convincing victory against Inverleigh on Saturday.

In what could have been his last ever game of football Winchelsea coach David Mensch ensured the season would be extended by at least another week with a match winning 8 goal performance.

The Blues jumped out to a 5 goal lead at the first break and Inverleigh never looked like getting themselves back in the game Joel Tipping and Trent McLure played support roles kicking 3 goals apiece.

Amongst the better players beside Mensch Lewie Hollmer & Tom Steven once again were solid contributors were have gelled well within the side after a late start to the season. Steven Oliver also cemented his position as favourite for the best and fairest with another tireless effort.

Winchelsea 7.1-43 13.2-80 17.4-106 20.7-127

An injection of senior experience helped guide the reserves to a great win over Inverleigh. This put an end to Inverleigh’s season campaign. The 4 point win came after the Blues trailed by 15 at the main break.

In defence Matty Partridge was able to repel many attacks. The running players in

Tournier, Gladman and Wilson were able to utilise the most of their opportunities to allow the Blues to make solid use of the ball. Gladman once again was amongst the top goal scorers with 2 and Daniel Hermans played another outstanding role up forward also kicking 2.

The reserves now can only reflect on what might have been with a handful of close losses during the season preventing them from being within striking distance of a finals berth.

On Saturday we will have B Grade Netball in their qualifying final however Sunday will be the big day for the club with Senior Football, A Grade Netball & D Grade Netball playing off in elimination finals, lets bring a sea of Blue to St Albans.

On Wednesday August 6th Winchelsea lost one of the pillars of this wonderful community that we all call home. Murray Leak passed away peacefully, just 12 days short of his 77th birthday, surrounded by his family and judging by the large amount of people who attended his funeral, he was well loved by all.

Murray’s great grandparents John and Hannah Leake settled in 1848 from Holmfirth in England to the property now known as “Kilwarre” on the Barwon River Winchelsea.

One of their grandchildren Edmund married Victoria Parish and had three children, Murray and two younger sisters Beryl and Helen. Edmund Leake decided he didn’t like the e on the end of Leake and changed it to the present day spelling of Leak. For seven generations now spanning 166 years the Leak family have been in the Winchelsea District.

It was a sure sign of the respect held for him by the presence of Winchelsea and a number of neighbouring Lions Clubs who formed a guard of honour at Murray’s funeral. And by the District Governor of V2 Phil Johnson who performed the special Lions Committal Ceremony and a wonderful eulogy by our present President Murray Aisbett.

Murray always had the community’s interest at heart and even by his families admittance he could be a bit grumpy he had a heart of gold. He will be sadly missed.
