100% of your fi re levy goes to our fi re servicesLast year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfi res Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victoria’s fi re services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession.

100 per cent of the fi re levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes fi refi ghters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fi re stations and 2,300 trucks.

Each year, Victoria’s fi refi ghters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fi res, fi res in the home, and workplace incidents. It’s a fairer fi re levy.

July 21st saw a noteworthy event at Winchelsea School.

45 years ago Margaret Reid started work as secretary to the Principal having finished school the previous Friday. Margaret had applied for the advertised position while still a student and has served continuously since. Winchelsea was a Higher elementary school at the time and the secondary section was disbanded around 1983 and continued as a primary school.

Born at Winchelsea where her father was employed at Ingleby, Margaret was part of a large family and has watched several generations of children pass through the school.

Along with her work at the school,Margaret has been involved in many roles in the wider community which included typist at the Star, treasurer of the Save the Children Fund and Winchelsea Repertory Society .

Congratulations Margaret Reid Stewart Mathison

The Deans Marsh Community Cottage recently welcomed two new coordinators Ruth Hamilton and Donna Nolan. Ruth and Donna are both Deans Marsh locals and are passionate about the success of their community.

Donna says, “This is an exciting time for us and Deans Marsh. We are so looking forward to re- launching the cottage as a welcoming and supportive community hub.”

Ruth and Donna in a few short weeks have already put together a term 3 program including a range of new workshops including photography basics, shellac etching and random basket weaving. Ruth says, “The cottage also welcomes a new “Cottage Kids” movement and music program based on the concepts of “Brain Gym” as well as monthly “talks” for adults with a focus on improving health .

Monday mornings, beginning term 3, Ruth and Donna invite everyone to have a free

coffee at the Deans Marsh General store from 9.30 – 10.30am to meet them, talk about ideas and have a general chat.

The cottage website is up and running andprovides full program details as well as information about a range of otherlocal

activities. Jump on and have a look at deansmarsh.org.au.

New Faces At Deans Marsh Community Cottage

Every now and again you need to update your iPad system. It is very easy to do, and well worth it to ensure your iPad works properly but also to pick up new features which you may enjoy.

The first step is to make sure your iPad is connected to the Internet. Then tap on the Settings app. to open your Settings page. Then tap on “General” and then “Software Update” This will bring up a window telling you if you need to update. If you see “Install Now”, tap on it, agree to the “Terms and Conditions,” and it will then start installing the update.

The current iPad ‘iOS’ system is 7.1.2. One of the great new features of System 7 is Radio. To access Radio, tap on the Music app. In the bottom left hand corner you will see Radio. Tap on Radio so that it turns red and opens up the Radio window. The top line of the Radio window is “Featured Stations,” The next line down is for stations you wish to add. If no stations have been added you will see a blank square with a red cross on it.

Tap on the red cross and it will bring up a “New Station” window or, if stations have already been added, tap on “New”. On the “New Station” window tap on “Enter an Artist.......” This will bring up a keyboard. Type in the artist you want eg. Johnny O’Keefe. Tapping on “Johnny O’Keefe Radio” will install it on My Stations and commence playing Johnny O’Keefe from his “6 O’Clock Rock” days interspersed with similar type rockers.

You can set up virtually any artist, composer or song as a “My Station” and it will play all day at no cost. If you decide you would like to buy the recording being played the cost is in the top righthand corner. It also works with iPhones. Pandora radio is a similar app that will play on either Apple or Android systems

Welcome to a very wet and cold Term 3!

This week our children have settled back into their classroom routines very well and with a great deal of focus which is great to see.

For the first 6 weeks of this term we welcome Kieren Hodge (preps) and Nicole Grant (Year 5/6), student teachers from Federation University to our school community to complete their final teaching practicums. We love having student teachers working with us as they always bring lots of fresh ideas and enthusiasm with them.

Last Tuesday our Prep – Year 6 students participated in a basketball clinic conducted by Eric from the Geelong Supercats – thank you Stu Fountain for organising the clinic. The children loved the clinic and it was great to see everyone participating with enormous enthusiasm and vigour.

Each term we conduct a writing competition to encourage our children

to write across a range of text types (writing is done at home). The response has been fantastic but we would really like to see all children entering as it a great opportunity for them to improve their writing skills and gain experience in writing to a broader audience.

Term 2 text type was ‘Persuasive Text’ and the winners were:

Prep Emily Carter

Year 1 Shivansh Bhutani

Year 2 Ethan Walker

Year 3 Alice Jennings

Year 4 Josh Fausett/Jett Price

Year 5 Sam Phelps

Year 6 Mia Robertson

Our Term 3 writing competition genre is ‘Information Report’ and I am sure the teachers will be confronted with difficult judging decisions once all the pieces of writing are handed in. Time to start writing and start researching!!

Winchelsea Primary School Kicks Off Term 3 Karen Turner

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor

Why are so many young mothers these days so frustrated? During a day’s shopping in Geelong last week, I was appalled at the behaviour of these mothers towards their children. They seem to derive satisfaction out of smacking and speaking so sharply to their young ones. The majority of these girls have labour saving devices we “oldies” never owned and still they are not satisfied. Please would some young mum give me the answer?

Signed, A Very Worried Gran

ResponseSir I’m no young Mum but I can advise “A Very Worried Gran” (Star 5/1/78). Stop worrying Gran, weren’t you ever frustrated when you dragged your young brood on a Christmas shopping spree? Did you never give them a quick slap on

the behind and a damned good tongue-banging? I am appalled at the behaviour of the young demons who run wild in the shops, milk bars, cafes and even in pubs – where they are not supposed to be. I saw a trio nearly wreck the H.B.A in Colac only yesterday. All of which indicated that Mums are not exercising control over their offspring. And whose fault is that Gran? Surely , yours and mine. We let OUR brood get away from us. In spite of modern educationists, who have had far too much to say, old Solomon had a pretty sound idea, and I don’t refer to his matrimonial activities, yet even those must have provided him with masterly experience in the use of the rod. Our young mothers are NOT frustrated Gran. In spite of modern day tensions, they are doing a mighty job. I love ‘em God bless them.

Signed, A Very Happy Grandpa

Tales from the burrowVolunteers ready to serve.Wurdale Fire Brigade alerted at 8.45 am last Wednesday to attend a fire alarm at the Wurdi Boluc Treatment Plant. Prompt turnout had the tanker arrive at the gate with Modewarre Brigade. Open security gate by contacting the control room in Geelong and arrive at the building to be met by a sheepish Barwon Water employee who said it was a false alarm. After thanking the brigade for turning up he explained that there was a meeting that morning and the urn had been filled, came to the boil and the steam triggered the alarm.

A Bale in the Bush.B Double load of wool heading for Winchelsea last week missed the turn at the bottom of the Shelford hill. Taking the next available route, the driver found himself on a narrow tree lined road and on arrival at BYV found a torn tarpaulin and one bale missing. A ute was dispatched to retrieve the wayward bale.

Growing Winchelsea Town Picnic - Barwon Park Mansion. At 10.30 Saturday morning, i took the kids out to the Barwon Park Mansion for the Growing Winchelsea Town Picnic, hosted by the Surf Coast Shire. When we arrived, there were few cars in the car park, but were warmly greeted by the Shire staff and the hosts of the Mansion. My two girls quickly headed to the face painting, while I wandered through the display. On display were boards illustrating the issues raised by residents. We were encouraged to identify, by using red dot stickers, the issues we though most affected us, or would like action on. We can not blame the Shire for not listening. Now enough talk...

The Growing Winchelsea Picnic at Barwon Park Mansion.

Lily Fountain enjoyed the Picnic.

Food for thought

Congratulations to the people who put on the Growing Winchelsea picnic at Barwon Park on Saturday I thought they did a great job, inspiring us all to share our visions for Winchelsea in a very friendly informal way. Visioning has been taking up quite a bit of my time lately as I’ve been working on gathering together our church’s dreams and aspirations in an action plan for the future. When I first came to Winchelsea I heard some comments suggesting that Winchelsea was too small to have three churches and I spent some time considering whether that was correct. It is my observation that although all Christians have been adopted into God’s family making them brothers and sisters in Christ, siblings usually have different tastes and personalities; meaning different styles of worship appeal to different people. I inherited a situation where my

predecessors and those in the other two churches had put in quite some effort to encourage cooperation between the three local churches. Considering the amount of emphasis Jesus placed on unity and his prayers the night before his crucifixion that we might be united, it seemed to me to be important to continue to encourage this unity. And with good relationships all round we have done that quite successfully over the past three years, finding all sorts of new ways to cooperate together.

When it comes to a vision for our town I pray that Winchelsea will continue to be a community that is blessed by the presence and loving service of three multi-generational healthy churches who continue to work together in loving unity to serve God and their communities. Our churches are not just impressive bluestone heritage buildings they have a unique contribution to bring to our communities as we offer people the opportunity to discover meaning and purpose in their lives beyond the empty materialistic values of our 21st Century culture; through helping them develop faith and spirituality. We also come alongside people at times of great joy and are there to support them in times of grief or sickness. In weekly services as we gather we encourage each other and we are fed with the word of God and inspired to live our life serving God and our fellow humans. I also have a dream to see the church reaching out in ways that are culturally relevant and appeal to the younger people in our midst. This inspires me to keep on finding new songs and different ways of including and serving people of all generations, for example once again next week the children will be fully participating throughout the service.

Aussie Hoops is Basketball Australia’s official junior game development program for children aged 5–10 years.

In July 2014, Basketball Australia re-launched the national program announcing a refreshed brand strategy and implementation process.

Aussie Hoops enables participants of all abilities the opportunity to learn basketball in a structured, inclusive and safe environment, developing physical fitness, social skills and an understanding of the sport while having fun.

Local dad Stuart Fountain has been pivotal in getting the Aussie Hoops program expanded into Winchelsea, working closely with Basketball Geelong to get the sport up and running in the town.

“I was bought up playing basketball and was looking for something to get my kids into. Was a simple decision to try and get a basketball presence in Winchelsea. The sport is not weather dependant, being held in the LTC. The intention is to run the aussie hoops program as a start, hopefully leading to our own junior club,

with a weekly junior competition, in Winchelsea.”

At Winchelsea Primary School the program will be delivered in each school term on Wednesdays from 3:45pm to 4:30pm. Each terms program will span eight weeks, with the term 3 program commencing on July 23rd.

Nationally, accredited coaches will deliver the program with a focus on participation and inclusiveness.

Basketball Geelong Aussie Hoops Coordinator, Liam McInerney added, “Each session promises to be jam-packed with fun and we are looking forward to welcoming new and returning participants to the program.

For a comprehensive overview of the new Aussie Hoops program, including fees and registration information visit the new Aussie Hoops website at www.aussiehoops.com.au

The re-launch of Aussie Hoops has been led by Basketball Australia with the support of

its state and territory members and the Australian Sports Commission.

Aussie Hoops, a junior basketball program developed by Basketball Australia, has started in Winchelsea.

The program has been developed for kids aged 5-10 years old. The Winchelsea program has been set up in conjunction with Basketball Geelong.

The program runs on Wednesdays from 3.15-4pm. It costs $85 per term and costs include a singlet, bag and basketball.

To register for the program, please visit www.aussiehoops.com.au and click on register.

Two weeks to nominate for Australian of the YearWith just two weeks to go before nominations for the Australian of the Year Awards 2015 close, I urge people in the electorate of Corangamite to put forward their local heroes.

This is a great opportunity to nominate someone in the community who leads by example and exemplifies what it means to be Australian.

There are many people in our community who are worthy of recognition, but they must be nominated to be in with a chance.

The prestigious Australian of the Year Awards offer a range of categories to recognise

people each Australia Day.

Each year, the Australian of the Year Awards recognise 128 remarkable Australians in eight States and Territories. The public is asked to nominate Australians to be considered for the four award categories:

Australian of the Year Senior Australian of the Year (60 years and over) Young Australian of the Year (16-30 years) Australia’s Local Hero

Nominations close on Friday 1 August 2014. For more information on the nomination process, please contact the National Australia Day Council on 1300 655 193 or at [email protected]

Bunyips CaveHi Kids,

I hope your first week back at school was great fun and you are learning heaps!

I hope some of you managed to go to the Family / Community Picnic day at Barwon Park Mansion last week. I heard it was really fantastic and there were lots of people there. What a great way to get together and talk about where we want this fabulous town to go in the future.

I would love to hear from you and then you can tell me about what you think would be a good thing for Winchelsea and you can also tell me what you have been up to.

So please, send in your pictures, stories, puzzles, jokes etc. and put them in my mailboxes, as they are so empty! Don’t forget they are at the Winchelsea School Office and the IGA supermarket.

Jokes of the WeekDoctor, Doctor, I keep seeing an insect spinning around.

Don’t worry, it’s just a bug that’s going around!

Q: How do you make a milk shake?

A: Give it a good scare!

Q: What do you call a peanut in a spacesuit?

A: An astronut!

ROADWORKS by Kaleb Berg Grade 1/2 At the front of the school the dig-gers are digging a hole for the road. It is very noisy near our classroom because we are close to the front. I hope the noise stops.

I REALLY WANT A SPRINT CAR By Logan Davis Grade 1/2 One day I went to a Sprint car shop and got a sprint car. Then I went to the sticker shop and got lots of stickers. Then I went to my shed to put the engine in and to put sticker on. Then I had a beer and then my friend came and I said can you help me put stickers on the sprint car and he said yes. So let’s go racing. And I won 1 million dollars.

Business ProfileBarwon Hotel - Janine PurcellI took over the lease of the Barwon Hotel just over 12 months ago on the 1st of July 2013. I have worked in hotels all of my adult working career, most recently was the Anglesea Hotel which I co-owned for 9 years.

When I first started looking for a new venture this hotel kept popping up. The Hotel has beautiful views of the river and the old blue stone bridge, set on 2 and a half acres with original bluestone walls still standing at the back of the hotel, so after much thought I decided to take a bit of a punt on Winchelsea and the potential the hotel and the town show.

The hotel’s previous owners had lost much of the passion required to run a small, country pub and it took some time to clean up the hotel and begin incorporating the

changes I wanted to make, that coupled with my business partner deciding pub life wasn’t for him, made the first four months quiet challenging to say the least. The result being I now have about 12 staff all customer service focused serving good country style fare, lunch and dinner, 7 days a week.

Typically my day starts at around 9 am when I do some back of house duties before setting the fires and getting the rooms warm and cosy for opening time.

Once we have opened, I am behind the bar serving lunch and drinks until around 4pm I try and have a bit of break then and either sit out the back or make the run home to organize the family for dinner, then make my way back for the locals at around 6pm, serving dinner and drinks

again until we close.

I have found the locals welcoming and to be very supportive and positive of the changes I have made and think I will have some long term friends eventually.

I believe the river is totally under-utilized in Winchelsea and would love to see it used as a tool to bring more visitors to the area, of course when the road works finally end.

Submissions to The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page. Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted. Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

Blues News Anthony Coxon

Taking the biggest road trip of the year proved fruitful for the Winchelsea Blues as they returned back down the highway with the 4 points.

It has always been a tough task to win at Werribee however with a great first half The Blues were able to set up the win. Coach David Mensch stood tall up forward kicking 4 goals. Brett Venables and Chris Giurcin playing supporting roles kicking 2 apiece.

Once again Steven Oliver controlled play throughout the midfield to take best on ground honours, Lewie Hollmer was a solid contributor and Jeremy Sezun and Byron Mathison were fantastic in defence.

With four rounds to play the Blues are currently sitting a game clear in 5th position with every game up against tough competition.

Werribee Centrals 2.2-14 4.6-30 8.11-59 10.15-75 Winchelsea 3.4-22 9.6-60 11.7-73 15.7-97

It had been a long time coming but the Reserves rejoiced with one of their best wins in recent times. Holding tight with Werribee for the first half the Blues were able to take control of the game in the second half with a dominant last quarter.

The win came from a great team effort with everyone contributing with no passengers.

Playing a rare game in the twos Andrew Leak controlled the midfield being fed by ruckman Joel Karpin who was fantastic at the clearances and stoppages.

As they head to Belmont next week, here’s hoping that the Blues are able to make it two in a row.

Edible landscapes bring sweet rewardsCommunity orchards, community gardens, composting projects and insect hotels are among the projects popping up across the Surf Coast Shire through Council’s Edible Landscapes Initiatives.

The initiatives aim to achieve a number of social, environmental and economic goals including increasing local food production, enhancing local and regional food security, beautifying places and bringing local communities together.

Heritage orchards have been planted at 12 local schools and two kindergartens, and an on farm composting pilot has started involving Camperdown Compost and Barwon Park in Winchelsea. The compost generated will be used to establish a heritage cider orchard at Barwon Park using specially selected apple trees.

Through local Men’s Sheds, 14 insect hotels have also been provided to schools and community gardens to encourage beneficial insects to set up camp.

Mayor, Cr Rose Hodge, said Surf Coast was seeking to be a pioneer in edible

landscapes. “Edible landscapes is an area where Council and community groups can work together to make a big difference to our environment. Through schools and community gardens we can encourage a lifelong love of growing fresh food, which will benefit people’s health and wellbeing and we can support edible landscape initiatives that bring people together.”

Council has included $20,000 in its 2014/15 budget to support edible landscape initiatives including the establishment of more public orchards along the Surf Coast.

We travelled to Werribee this week to face a massive challenge, Werribee Centrals are top of ladder in all Divisions with the exception of 15 & under where they are sitting second. Werribee certainly showed us why they are such a strong club with strong performances from all grade which saw us come home winless. The positive for the day was our A Grade who took it right up to the undefeated Werribee both in skill and physicality, and given another quarter may have created the upset of the season!

A Grade Werribee Centrals 38 def Winchelsea 31

Last time we met Werribee, we didn’t put out a good performance so today we played with the goal of minimising the margin, capitalising on any turnovers and staying as close to them as possible. We were prepared for a press and talked about how to match their experienced line up, we just had to put all this together on court. We had our chances in the first quarter but we just didn’t protect it enough to covert it into a goal. We were struggling to find the circle edge and they were getting hand to balls around the ring and with an experienced mid court taking away our space. Werribee worked a short and sharp attacking line up and our defenders played a tight man on man contest but they patiently worked and reworked the ball until space opened up. Our circle

defenders matched the Werribee shooters for height and made them earn every goal but Werribee did a good job in delivering to the ring and scoring off as many feeds as possible. Some changes proved effective for us because they hadn’t pushed the lead out beyond 10.

We started the second half with a goaling switch, Ciara Stewart back into GS and Chloe Wilson out to GA, with the intention of having a moving goal ring. This proved effective because the court opened up and we out scored Werribee in the third quarter 12-10. We were up the scoring end which helped our attackers control the play and give a safe pass while our defenders Janelle Birch, Alisha Adams, Hayley Birch and Leanna continued to play a tight game and force Werribee to turn over the ball. Ellie Castles and Hayley Birch were taking the bumps this quarter but held there space around the circle and started to dominate there opposition around the circle.

We went into the last quarter with confidence knowing that if we protect the ball their lead would be narrowed as we were gradually getting there. The score with 15 minutes to go was 34-26.

We didn’t change our line up because the connections were there and the defence was working. Unfortunately that meant that Katrina Filice didn’t see any court time today.

We won the last quarter 5-4. It was played with intensity with several contested balls resulting in a lot of whistle and Hayley rolling around on the ground. The change of ends impacted the scoring lines which is clear with only 9 goals being scored for that quarter. Both teams were playing with determination and as a result the umpire got involved in the game and the captains were ‘spoken to’. This changed nothing and with two minutes to go both teams continued to fight for the ball. Although we didn’t go away with the four points we took a lot of confidence from this game knowing that we won the second half and can compete against a top undefeated side. We are the only team to come this close to Werribee and we should be very happy with that.

Best Players: Chloe Wilson, Alisha Adams and Hayley Birch

We didn’t start well, very similar to last week. Our team didn’t start by dictating to them what we were doing but we started with panic and indecisiveness. When attacking the ball we were all doing head dodges and making only one lead. Everyone was waiting for someone else to do the work. The ball was delivered into the ring even with all those errors, but we didn’t convert with accuracy. Our defenders took too long to get on top of their goalers and the Werribee Wing Attack dictated the whole attack end. It was a rocky start but we were only down by 3 at quarter time. Changes were made to our mid court and defence end in an effort to shut down Werribee’s drive. We were too lose in defence in the centre court but Monique Bulte did have a go at coming out for an intercepts the move of Makayla Bulte from WD To C helped our attacking end but only through the mid third. We were just making hard work of it. We did get the ball into the ring but accuracy was again a big issue. At half time they had stretched out their lead 22-12.

We made some major positional changes to peg back Werribee but we struggled to get the ball into our goal third and had less opportunities at goals. The feeders did the work but struggled to get on the ring but when they did Sarah Todd and Karly Honner were both calling for balls they were not in the best position for. The defence end played well to slow up the ball and force some turn over ball. We had the opportunities but struggled to transition the pass through the mid third. The change worked as we drew 6 all this quarter but we just weren’t gaining anything.

Again some positional changes were made coming in to the last quarter, Belinda Tod and Bronwyn Walker came back in to the game. Belinda shot well in the last and we seemed to move the ball better through the court. We won this quarter 9-7 and the second half 15- 13 but left the run too late.

C Grade Werribee Centrals 48 def Winchelsea 10

Facing the top side this week was always going to be a massive challenge for our C Grade team who have only managed one win for the season. A fairly ordinary first quarter put us well and truly on the back foot so we tried some different combinations to try and peg back the margin. Whilst we managed to score a few more in the remaining three quarters Werribee continued to score well and ended up taking a comfortable win.

Best Players: Haleisha Kirby, Lyndelle Dobson and Lucy King

After some great performances over the past few weeks we knew we would have to pull out everything this week when we faced top of the ladder Werribee. We started the game with a new combination and the centre court really gelled well to create some great passages of play. The defence end provided a lot of pressure to provide some turnovers but Werribee were just too strong across the whole court and we just couldn’t catch a break. We did manage to break even in the last quarter, a positive finish to the game.

Best Players: Team Effort

15 & Under Werribee Centrals 27 def Winchelsea 13

Werribee Centrals were a very strong team who were able to pull off some great

systems and even a quite impressive centre court press. Our girls just couldn’t match up to them, they were strong attacking at the ball and seemed to close out the space in the court when we tried to attack. We however, put in a strong game when the opportunities were there, pulling off some great passages of play when we made strong drives and finished off our leads. Connie Royal was fabulous all game but once again played in all areas of the court, centre, goal defence and goal shooter. It is great to see this versatility in our young players. Chloe Miller was great in defence creating many turnovers and even getting some rebounds which is a fantastic effort given she was the shortest (by a long way) in the circle.

Best Players: Connie Royal, Claire Mawson and Chloe Miller

13 & UnderWerribee Centrals do not have a 13 & Under team so the girls had a week off.
