100% of your fi re levy goes to our fi re servicesLast year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfi res Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victoria’s fi re services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession.

100 per cent of the fi re levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes fi refi ghters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fi re stations and 2,300 trucks.

Each year, Victoria’s fi refi ghters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fi res, fi res in the home, and workplace incidents. It’s a fairer fi re levy.

In 2008 the Federal and State Governments agreed to pay for 15 hours of early childhood education for four-year-olds, which came into effect last year.

Under the agreement, called the Universal Access to Early Childhood Education, the State Government funds 10 hours of kinder education and the Commonwealth funds the extra 5 hours.

Unfortunately the recent Federal Budget only included money for the agreement until the end of 2014, with no guarantee to renew the funding beyond that point.

It is a huge concern that taking away kinder and preschool funding would not give our children the education they need to prepare them for formal schooling, and the reality is, that if funding is not provided by all levels of government, preschool and kinder hours will be reduced, fees will rise and some children will miss out on early learning altogether.

Any reduction in hours offered will have a major impact on families with children making the transition to school from 2016 and beyond.

However, the funding problem does not stop with our children. The introduction of the Universal Access to Early Childhood Education program has also helped create more jobs in the Early Childhood education sector. Kindergartens made enormous changes, not only to infrastructure, but also to the workforce, to deliver the additional five hours so any scaling back of funding would be a loss for both families, and early childhood staff and centres.

The program has offered greater access to early childhood services, greater flexibility, and has allowed children a great head start for their future learning.

We need to call on the Australian Government to recognise the importance

of quality early childhood education and continue to fund a minimum of 15 hours of kindergarten for all 4 year old children.

Quality early learning programs are pivotal for the well-being and development of all children and fundamental to Australia’s social and economic future.

We would urge not only parents, but all members of the community in helping us to support The Early Learning Association Australia’s online petition which calls on the Australian Government to recognise the importance of quality early childhood education and continue to fund a minimum of 15 hours of kindergarten.

If you would like to find out more about the cuts to kindergarten funding or to register your support please sign the petition located online at www.keep15hours.org.au

Upon arrival we had a blustery morning tea before visiting the Marine Discovery Centre on Swan Bay. What a hidden gem. Our wonderful guide led us to the touch pool and just like kids we were in awe of all the hidden marine creatures; starfish, hermit crabs, shellfish, sharks egg casings that looked just like seaweed, all sorts of wonders, and what an informative guide.

Situated around the walls are tanks holding fish, seahorses, eels, rock

lobsters and more. A special low profile observation room to watch the local birdlife. Certainly a great place to visit especially with children. The group of school children following us had experienced a somewhat rough crossing on the ferry!

We were then taken by John on a tour of the township of Queenscliffe , many wonderful buildings steeped in history. A

delicious lunch at the bowling club then on to the Maritime Museum where the

first thing our guide Mary said was, “I have a relative in Winchelsea does anyone know Yvonne Orchard?” Who doesn’t??? Well, Mary, an ex teacher I might add, was absolutely wonderful. She told us all the fishing history, how the lifeboats would turn out when there was a disaster at sea, how the old lighthouses worked and many amusing anecdotes. Quite a character.

So ended a wonderful day. We came home with information overload. Our thanks to Les and Lyn once again for a wonderful day out.

John Bumford Piano Recital Uniting Chuch, Winchelsea. Saturday 19th July 2014It was my birthday we decided to take a drive back to my old town Winchelsea. The gift was a pleasant two and a bit hour drive from my (for a year and a bit) new home of Stawell with mum Gabby and brother Alex, to see our friend John Bumford perform a recital program of Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven. Others too had come from distances to hear John, some from Melbourne, some from Colac and some from Geelong. John never disappoints.

On introduction to playing Bach, John talked about about the fugues from the first book of the Well Tempered Clavier: a keyboard instrument that was tuned like a piano. This new tuning, that is now standard, has the ability to move in and out of all keys, making the breadth of expression a composer has to use far wider. This change was first explored by Bach since the Antiquites. Thus Bach modernised the keyboard and modern music as a whole. John played Bach’s BWV 869, wr. 1722, Fugue No. 24, in B minor of 48 fugues for the Well Tempered Clavier. John expressed with sensitivity the mood of the fugue. Often the Fugues have a solemn nature, and it is hard to take them out of pure exercise and make of

them art. His playing has always been able to bring the difficult and make it emotional and real.

In Playing the Brahms’ Eight Piano Pieces, each work related to Bach’s use of melodic ideas. What comes to my mind is Johannes Brahms musical prediction of leading motif, which is a recurring theme or phrase that leads the ear and ties together the melodic frame of a piece of music. Beethoven had been making blatant use of these short recurring phrases even before Brahms.

It is in John’s experienced hand and mind for music that an ear both untrained and trained can perceive and appreciate such melodic concepts, without disturbing the textures and colours that were explored by Johannes Brahms.

Next was the Appassionata in F minor, of Beethoven, technically challenging but rich and beautiful at the same time. John explained the story of Beethoven and his temperament toward the piano, his pianos often suffering unmendable breakage. The pianos of the future were after that made with a steel frame. What was apparent when I heard the Appassionata, was the passion came through. John’s knowledge of music history always entertains; his story about why copyright came into use, which was slanted more toward the favour of publishers, made us all smile. Come along to John Bumford’s concerts and recitals, the programs are highly entertaining, enjoyable, educational and always passionate; for me it was a really nice birthday.

Tales from the burrowFinancial Planning explained by an Irishman. Paddy bought a rabbit from a farmer for $100.

The farmer agreed to deliver the rabbit the next day.

In the morning he drove up and said, ‘Sorry son, but I have some bad news. The rabbit died.’

Paddy replied, ‘Well just give me my money back then.’

The farmer said, ‘Can’t do that. I’ve already spent it.’

Paddy said, ‘OK then, just bring me the dead rabbit.’

The farmer asked, ‘What are you going to do with him?’

Paddy said, ‘I’m going to raffle him off.’

The farmer said, ‘You can’t raffle a dead rabbit!’

Paddy said, ‘Sure I can. Watch me. I just won’t tell anybody he’s dead.’

A month later, the farmer met up with Paddy and asked, ‘What happened with that dead rabbit?’

Paddy said, ‘I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at $2 each and made a profit of $898.’

The farmer said, ‘Didn’t anyone complain?’

Paddy said, ‘Just the guy who won. So I gave him his $2 back.’

Paddy now works for a Big Bank.

Nominations for the 2014 Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Awards are now open.

Details of centres and times for the supply of carrots and bait are listed below

Your co-operation in this campaign will assist in reducing the district rabbit population to the lowest possible level and is earnestly requested.

ANOTHER DISAPPOINTING MEETING FOR A HARD WORKING COMMITTEE

The attendance was most disappointing at the recent annual meeting of the Infant Welfare Centre Committee. The service provided for babies, young children and advice to mothers free of charge and most beneficial to all.

The centre has had a facelift over the past three years with a new carpet square in Sister’s room, new curtains, bright orange light fittings in the changing room, a wall

clock and new rubbish bins, fluorescent tubes and wall heater. The phone has now been connected. The Winchelsea Shire financed the painting of the interior of the centre.

Due to the lack of interested people it was necessary to call two meetings before a committee could be elected. This committee comprises Mrs Elizabeth Bennett, President, Mrs Julie Oataway, Secretary, Mrs Shirley Lloyd, Treasurer.

It is hoped that in the future the young mothers of the Winchelsea district will give the whole hearted support to this very valuable service and also their assistance to make sure it runs efficiently. Don’t leave it to the few; YOUR help is needed too.

Geelong to WinchelseaMuch of the roadworks between Geelong and Austin Street in Winchelsea are very weather dependent as the materials needed to seal the road are only able to be used when weather conditions are warmer and the road and ground conditions are dry. VicRoads’ utmost priority is the safety, quality and longevity of the road, and because of this are ensuring that the works are only conducted when weather conditions are acceptable.

VicRoads’ contractors applied a seal to the new lanes on this section, however due to the cold and wetter than expected weather, traffic could not be moved onto these new lanes permanently. This also prevents the upgrades to the existing road from commencing.

Currently, the contractor is continuing to complete works where able including installing concrete barriers and handrails on the new bridge over the Warrnambool-Geelong Railway line. There have also been significant improvements to traffic management in the Winchelsea township area, including the installation of street lights and reflectors to provide further definition of the lanes between intersections, providing a safer and clearer route for motorists especially during these foggy winter months.

VicRoads welcomes and relies on the local community to provide us with feedback and alert us of any specific traffic management issues. Please call VicRoads on 13 11 70 or email

[email protected]

There has been good progress on the section between Austin Street and Deans Marsh Road during recent months where asphalt is being laid at the Murrell Street intersection. On the duplication project, a crushed rock pavement is being used to construct most stretches of the highway, with asphalt pavement used at signalised intersections. This is because asphalt pavements perform well at signalised intersections, where there is regular braking and acceleration. Construction of asphalt pavement is not as susceptible to bad weather as crushed rock pavements, because you do not need to wait until the individual layers dry before beginning a new layer. The intersection is expected to be open to the public in coming weeks.

Construction is also progressing well on the new public toilets with the slab poured in recent weeks. The toilet block is expected to be completed in September. Temporary public toilet facilities, including for people with disabilities, are available during construction.

Winchelsea to ColacFollowing a review of Planning Scheme Amendment documents (Surf Coast Shire, C91 and Colac Otway Shire, C80) and public submissions to an Independent Panel, a detailed report has been prepared by Planning Panels Victoria. The aim of the report is to provide an independent assessment and recommendations to

VicRoads.

The report is available on the Planning Scheme Amendments Online website

The report is also available at the VicRoads Project Office in Waurn Ponds, Bendigo Bank in Winchelsea, and Surf Coast Shire and Colac Otway Shire Council offices.

VicRoads will now finalise an ‘Adoption Report’ where recommendations are reviewed and responded to before being sent to the Minister for Planning for approval. VicRoads representatives will continue meeting with landowners who are affected by land acquisition.

How can I get more information?Visit: www.vicroads.vic.gov.au , Call: 03 4243 3800, Email: [email protected] , Visit: 174-212 Colac Road, Highton (opposite Bunnings in Waurn Ponds)

The Princes Highway duplication between Geelong and Colac is essential to improve safety, travel times and reliability for locals, freight and tourist traffic. All works between Geelong and Winchelsea are expected to be completed in 2016. Subject to planning approvals, construction for the proposed Princes Highway duplication from Winchelsea to Colac is expected to begin in 2015 and take about four years to complete.

Highway Project UpdateVicRoads Project Director, Tony Hedley.

Do you like crosswords and puzzlesor is advertising your thing? Many readers have welcomed the return of crosswords and puzzles to the Star.

This creates a position for a volunteer with an interest in puzzles to be responsible for organising the puzzles for publication. Like other areas in the production of the paper each week, the task is made easier by access to the internet. Complete

puzzles are available for download or there is a program that will create a themed crossword which could have local clues.

An important feature of the Star structure is to have more than one person familiar with the work done in each section of the organization. This ensures that there is always a substitute in the event of ill health or holidays.

We have 2 compositors, 2 people familiar with finances and to make 2 we are

looking for another volunteer to become familiar with advertising.

Both these positions can be managed from home by anyone with basic computer skills.

If you are interested or need further information, talk to the editor Stu Fountain 0417160559 or Stewart Mathison 0428672054.

I REALLY WANT… by Lily Fountain Grade 1/2 I really want a puppy because they are very cute and muck around in the mud. They are very playful.

ROADWORKS by Kiamma Pierce Grade 1/2 On the holidays I went to the tea rooms. On the way to the rea rooms I saw the workers working. I saw the bobcats were working. One of the men had so much to do I saw one man had broken one bobcat.

At the Zoo Grade Three Four Camp By Zoe Luppino - Grade 3/4

One day there was a School Camp. It was at the zoo, it was grade three four.

When we arrived we went straight to sleep in our cabins. The next day when we woke up we went to the Lions. The cage open and the Lions chased grade three four down the path. They finally got to their cabins. ’Phew’, they were all safe.

Later, when we all safe, we went to see the Monkeys. The Monkeys poo on us and made a lot of noise.

After all that we saw the other Zoo Animals. It all went well and nothing went wrong with them.

Then we when back to the Cabins and got all the stuff packed up and the Bus came to pick us up. Next we to School.

On the way Home on the little bus we got to listen to music. When we arrived at school we saw all the Mum’s and Dads waiting for their kids. For the grade Three’s it was their first Camp with the School. It was so fun we all had a great time.

Next week’s Morning Melodies (Thursday August 7th) in the Winchelsea Tea Rooms has once again attracted a new talent in Melbourne-based lyric baritone, Luke Belle, with considerable success as a performer already, who is looking forward to his trip down the highway to entertain us.Luke has recently completed his undergraduate music degree at Monash University, under leading Melbourne teacher of voice, Loris Synan.

He has had wide experience performing in a tour to Italy in 2012, winning the John Dingle Memorial Aria Award in 2013, and has been chosen as the lead role “Armiger” in an original Australian Opera “The Play of Herod” with the Victorian Opera Youth Opera later this year..

He looks to continue studies with a Masters next year. He has been a regular performer at University productions featuring in Sondheim and Puccini classics, and been a soloist in lunch time

concert series. His involvement in the popular Opera in the Alps and Opera in the Market have meant great exposure to his chosen creative direction.

Luke’s program will include arias by Haydn, and Mozart, songs from the artistry of Wolf, Schumann and Faure, and popular songs by Gilbert & Sullivan, Col Porter, Lerner & Lowe – a varied and entertaining

As this goes to print, next week’s Morning Melodies is again heavily booked with early pre-bookings, such is the popularity of this event in our town, and the mid-winter break in July.

The sumptuous morning tea at 10.00am prepared by Philomena is a fitting prelude to the musical program commencing at 11.00am.

Phone Joan MacKenzie on 5267 2075, or 0407 506119 to book your spot there.

Why Would You Come to Winchelsea?Growing up in country Victoria, in Hamilton, Kerang and secondary schooling in Castlemaine, I loved sport, particularly cricket, and athletics, and showed early interest in music. A Science degree at Monash University lead to 17 years as a classroom teacher (in the city for 5 years) prior to a move to the North-East, settling in Euroa, not a great deal larger than Winchelsea. A change of scene occurred when I headed back to University to continue a long held passion for music, completing a degree in 1991, and starting life as a freelance musician, and teaching piano throughout the district. He instituted a scholarship scheme valued at over $20,000 to encourage young musicians on their journey to a career. He played in several bands – Country, Jazz, and Wedding reception bands. Gradually more happened with solo concerts, and work with Arts Victoria.

In 2005 a dramatic change with a move to Geelong to take up a position at Western Heights Uniting Church as music director and Pastoral Care co-ordinator. This was attacked with much alacrity, and lead to the completion of a Masters in Divinity in 2008. A brief sojourn transpired as resident organist at Wesley Church, Geelong followed prior to the move to Winchelsea in 2012.

With the retirement and movement away of the long time pastor of the Uniting Church, Don Cracknell, the church council moved to install me as an interim Co-ordinator in lieu of no minister coming to Winchelsea at the beginning of that year.

The kindness and willingness to embrace new people is something special to Winchelsea – assistance to find accommodation, the church having the old manse restored for my wife Olive and I to live in, being greeted at the Bendigo Bank by first name the first week here, many helpers assisting with the shift from Geelong, offers of food and in kind help on the way, the comical reparte with Alan at the Post Office (including help beyond his role). It is a joy to be able to use the

ideal facilities – the Tea Rooms, the Globe Theatre, the Hub, the churches, and the Leisure centre for musical functions, and to see the appreciation expressed on each occasion. The instigation of the Winchelsea Morning Melodies at the Tea Rooms has been a real boost to the town’s cultural landscape.

As co-ordinator at the church, I am responsible for arranging people to lead in the Sunday worship, and also sometimes speaking, co-ordinating with church elders on decisions related to the running of the church, assisting with inter-church events – remarkably active in Winchelsea, and leading the church singing group, and occasional choir. At times, I am called on to visit those who have a pastoral need (from church or community), and enjoys times at the Mens Shed, and occasionally the gym. The day normally starts with a run along the river or the golf course with Scotch Collie, Hamish. Sharing in worship

at Chelsea and Hesse lodges with the residents are treasured times.

My first community event was at the Hub in early 2012, leading the funeral service of the late Barney Parsons – what a way to meet people! It is such a tribute to the town that the iconic Thursday night meal at that same Hub is such a respected and valued community event.

That is the answer to why Winchelsea is such a wonderful place to live – people, people, people.

A concern I have about the future of the town is the push to have Winchelsea develop quickly into a larger centre. It would be sad to see the character and qualities and personalities that make Winchelsea such a wonderful place to live being diluted and potentially spoiled by a rapid influx of those who do not relate to the current culture.

Submissions to The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page. Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted. Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

Water Concerns There was a recent meeting at the Hub of a group of Western District residents concerned at what is happening, and what might happen, to our water. Of concern is both above ground and below ground supplies. Sixteen people attended from as far away as Warrnambool. Others were from Beech Forest, Gellibrand,

Freshwater Creek, Moriac, Camperdown and Winchelsea. Alarm was expressed at the way our water is becoming polluted and, if fracking for unconventional gas is approved, the potential for this pollution to increase dramatically. It was decided to lobby our local state politicians to make an enquiry into water issues policy for both major parties prior to the upcoming State election. There will be a further meeting this Wednesday 30th July, 7:30PM at the Senior Citizen’s Clubrooms. Further details contact Malcolm Gardiner 5235 8325.

Below is an email sent to Terry Mulder, Winchelsea Plice and Surf Coast Shire.

A petition will be set up at the Winchelsea post office, to be sent to the Minister of Transport. This has been an on going issue since august 2010.

Good Morning Terence,

URGENT action is required to slow speeding motorist in this street.I live at 48,have been here for 4 years. Its getting worse because of the road works and at school drop off and pick up. Happy to meet with you, The local Police and Shire don’t seem interested. Looking forward to a quick response. I am now going to start a petition at the local Post Office. Thanks for your time

David Chrimes

Reading through the July 15 issue of the Star I was interested to see what was called the CWA reserve is to be renamed the Stirling Park . Who is this named after?

I also noted that the reserve bounded by Cooper, Sussex & Neilson Streets is unnamed when approx 10 years ago the Shire named it the R.H.Bennett reserve after my father in recognition for his many years service to the Winchelsea community.

Dad was on the committee to first start the hospital and continued on the hospital management committee for many years. He was also on the school committee for about 15 years, also on the Globe Theatre management committee, running and MC’ing the Saturday night dances

Letters to the Editor

for more years than I can remember. He helped run the marching girl squads in 1950-60 era, all this while trying to keep my brothers and I in line (the fear of the number 9 boot helped!).

There used to be a sign on the corner of Cooper & Neilson Sts with R H Bennett Reserve but it disappeared one Saturday night a couple of years ago and has never

been replaced. I hope this oversight regarding the naming of the reserve will be rectified and that the sign be replaced .

As an aside I have two grandsons with the Bennett name and they are the sixth generation of Bennett continuously living in Winchelsea.

Yours etc Murray Bennett

Newtown & Chilwell 12 . 13 . 85 def Winchelsea 5 . 2 . 32.

Another bleak Sat morning saw the Under 18’s travel to Newtown for what the boys knew would be a tough assignment, however they made a great start in the 1st quarter kicking against the wind. The 2nd saw the Blues have most of the play on their forward line , but were unable to convert on the scoreboard. Still right in the game at 1/2 time the3rd quarter saw Newtown & Chilwell pile on 5 unanswered goals & although the boys fought the game out - they outscored the opposition in the last quarter the gap was too much to make up.

There have been several injuries emerge after the game, so some of the boys will be resting up this week before taking on Torquay this week at Eastern Reserve.

GOALS : J. Bush C. Mirrabelli J. Peters J. Price L. Stokes all 1 goal.

BEST : D. Tenabel K. Berg D. Witcombe C. Mirrabelli E. Fletcher Z. Moules.

With 3 games left in the home & away rounds, make the most of your time playing for the Under 18’s , make the effort to get to training and let’s see out the season with some real Blues grit & determination - to show just how far this group has come,

We headed to Belmont this week to try out their new courts and to hopefully bring home more success than last week. Both time the two clubs have met this year we have shared the wins with three each but this time our wins were a bit more convincing and we managed to narrow the margins on our losses. A, B and D Grade had substantial wins which will again help us secure good positions as we lead in to finals.

A Grade Winchelsea 75 def Belmont 25WOW what a game! All 9 of our players took the court and all 9 players deserved their court time. We started strong in the first quarter with Tahlia Berg hitting the mark and feeding strong. With Janelle birch injured Sarah Davies had big shoes to fill but this didn’t worry her and Alisha because they combined beautiful in the ring. We had a good lead of 10 heading into the second. Some changed into the second strengthened the team and we continued to dominate. Ciara Stewart and Chloe Wilson shot at 100% and combined well and with the quick passes to each other caught Belmont off guard. The ball was brought down smoothly and we scored 18 to their 6. A strong lead heading into the second half.

Katrina Filice came on into GS and Elly Castles into WA. It started to rain and the wind picked up which slowed us down but once we adjusted, we were ready to fire again. The defenders didn’t let anything through and this kept them to scoring

only 6. Hayley Birch’s workload was outstanding help bring the ball down court and then be on the ring if needed. We scored 19 goals this quarter which brought the score out to 22- 57. We had a target for the last quarter and this was the first game all season we achieved it and then some. Everyone dug deep and continued to play their roll to get us to the target. Our strong team defence and driving attack helped us score 18 and kept them to just 3 goals.

Best Players: Hayley Birch, Tahlia Berg and Alisha Adams

B Grade Winchelsea 57 def Belmont 22A great warm up had the team focused and ready to take it to Belmont. We haven’t been playing to our full potential the last couple of weeks so hopes were high for today’s game. The attacking end did a good job at getting the ball but at times threw an ineffective pass which gave them the opportunity to score. Our defence was tight and this forced them to throw balls away and we were there waiting for the scraps. We were doing most things right and had the lead 12-6. We some changes and Sam McKenzie came on into Wing Defence and Makayla Bulte took the Centre. It was a great move because Sam killed it in Wing Defence getting her hands to 3 intercepts and Makayla Bulte deflected 4. The mid court press that Belmont played had us a little shaken and we threw away balls and drove too early. Once we caught on to our errors and found Belinda, the goals came very quickly. We had a convincing lead 24-13 at half time

More changes were made which only stretched our lead, Angie Mawson found her feet and worked efficiently to deliver the ball into Belinda Czerniawski. Karly Honner gave the attack end a little more control and the defenders were outstanding with Monique Bulte, Makayla Bulte and Sam McKenzie keeping them to scoring only 4. Belinda shot 15 from 15 and was provided with plenty of ball. The score going into the last 41-17. A few more changes to practice the ‘what if’ scenario and we were pumped and ready to take this game out. Lots of ball being won by us and provided to the goalers, particularly Belinda. We finished off well and played like every minute counted. A great result

and a very happy team.

Best Players: Makayla Bulte, Karley Honner and Monique Bulte

C Grade Belmont 36 def Winchelsea 23Although we lost today it was a half the margin of a previous clash and it was one of our better games for the year. We kept with Belmont for three quarters but we just ‘ran out of legs’ in the last quarter and they were able to run away with the game. With Millie King out injured, we missed her on court and this only left us with one on the bench which put a lot of pressure on the centre court to run out the game. We wish Millie and speedy recovery and hope she is back with us soon. Danielle Kuchenmeister and Kelly Steere took over the centre court and played really well. Our defensive combination of Haleisha Kirby, Lyndell Dobson and Abbey Todd were superb providing many turnovers and keeping Belmont to under 10 goals per quarter. Well done girls, great effort!

Best Players: Abbey Todd, Lyndelle Dobson and Lucy King

D Grade Winchelsea 38 def Belmont 21Having lost to Belmont in our earlier clash by two goals we knew that we had improved but wow what a difference! With finals a clear goal for our team we cannot afford to drop another game for the season so we went out firing against a team sitting just above us on the ladder. It was a fantastic game from the whole team. Amanda Partridge was a very strong target in the goal circle and finished off with accuracy. The centre court combinations worked well together and created great passages of play. Holly McFarlane made strong drive for the ball and then delivered with accuracy to our goalers. The defenders were again “on fire” with some great intercepts and rebounds which they then delivered well to our attackers. Everyone gelled and played well as a team , it’s a tough road ahead to get to finals but if we continue playing like we did yesterday there is no reason for us not to.

Best Players: Amanda Partridge, Josie McDonald and Holly McFarlane

Last Wednesday at 3.15pm, Aussie Hoops, the new Junior Basketball programme developed by Basketball Australia, commenced in the LTC. I turned up thinking that the 16 registrations we had, would be a good start. I was wrong!

Come 3.15, we had almost 40 kids running around! A great turn out! Last week we had some problems with online registrations, but we have opened up more spots, so if you haven’t registered yet, visit www.aussiehoops.com.au and register now. The programme is aimed at developing basketball skills and promoting fun and fitness. For more information, please call stuart on 0417 160 559.

Attention 11 and 12 Year Olds !Due to the age restrictions placed by Basketball Australia on the Aussie Hoops programme, 11, 12 or 13 year olds could not register. I have had some parents ask about running a programme for the older kids. So, if you have an 11, 12 or 13 year old in Grade 5 or 6 at Winchelsea Primary School and they would like to participate, pleas call me on 0417 160 559 to register your interest.

Belmont 23 Def Winchelsea 22We started off slow this week but had an amazing come back to only go down by a goal. Claire Mawson drove hard all game but showed particular talent in her strong feeds to our goalers Caitlin Burgess and Ebony Berg who finished off with accurate shooting. Abbie Clarke provided strong drives onto the ring making it easy for her team mates to deliver the ball. All seven players provided strong defence down the whole court putting pressure on Belmont to get the ball through them. Olivia Black showed her strength in the circle, teaming well with both Chloe Miller and Connie Royal. Turnovers were capitalised by the work of Rachel Boddington down the court.

Best Players: Olivia Black, Ebony Berg and Claire Mawson

13 & Under Belmont 32 def Winchelsea 1It was a tough morning for our Under 13s this week who only managed to get 1 goal on the score board. Like every week our girls didn’t let this damper their spirits and continued to fight for the ball and work hard to reduce the scoring opportunities of Belmont. Our defensive combination of Maddison Kattwinkel and Georgia Glynn saw plenty of the ball and took all the opportunities for intercepts and rebounds that Belmont allowed. They worked hard to work the ball out of defence but unfortunately most times it just came straight back at them. Ieisha Brown provided strong defence and drives through the centre court and even had a go in the goal circle. Again keep your positive attitude girls, take your lessons from Belmont’s good skills and work hard at training!

Best Players: Ieisha Brown, Georgia Glynn and Maddison Kattwinkel
