by John BroadrickThe Hunt & Gather Festival kicked off last Thursday with the regional Field Days at the magnificent Barwon Park Mansion.

Events held over the four day program highlighted the beauty of our fabulous town to visitors and locals, with Barwon Park, the historic Tea Rooms, Winchelsea Hotel, the river parklands and the various artist studios all playing a part.

Hundreds of families took advantage of the school holidays to join with local farmers and food producers to view the offerings of the 50 plus exhibitors from around the state, who had gathered in the historic grounds to show their extensive range of supplies.

Produce on show varied from manufacturers and farmers, to wineries and local food producers.

A locally-driven initiative, Hunt & Gather Winchelsea has developed from collaboration between the community group Growing Winchelsea Inc., Surf Coast Shire Council, and the Winchelsea and District Community Bank.

Friday night saw an industry dinner at the Tea Rooms, with 60 guests representing cafes, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and producers from the Bellarine, Surf Coast, Geelong and Golden Plains areas, taste an absolutely exquisite menu featuring local and regional produce.

Local Winchelsea chef Luke Wakefield and his apprentice Usi, both from the hugely successful Farmers Place, together with Philomena Carney from the Winchelsea Tea Rooms deserve a special thank you for creating such an innovative menu.

Matching wines selected and supplied by Dinny Goonan Family Wines complemented each dish.

Winchelsea highlights included Winchelsea Honey, Hastings Ostrich eggs and their new Ostrich Cabana, and Casuarina Biodynamic Farm vegetables.

The goal and objectives for the evening was to educate and promote local produce, to help our local producers and retailers to build a stronger local economy.

Friday also saw the beginning of the free RV camping trial on the riverbank. Self-contained vans will be able to stop for a maximum of 48 hours in the area between the sign erected below the swimming pool, up to the railway bridge.

On Saturday, the annual Uniting Church auction took place at Hesse Street Reserve for the 33rd (or 34th?) year, with hundreds of items up for bidding by the hundreds of eager bargain hunters. Items sold ranged

from poultry and quails to hand and power tools to farm equipment and antiques.

Last year’s auction raised $7,500 for the church. That put a big dint in the cost of new windows for the church hall, which is used by Uniting Care and community groups like Land Care, and the Refugee Group, as well as church based events.

Perennial volunteers Geoff Orchard and Jeanette McConachy again worked tirelessly to set up and oversee the smooth running of this popular community event, with Geoff staying onsite overnight to guard the goods.

They head a small committee which run the auction. A number of regular non-church people pitch in to

help each year with setting up and manning stalls. The auctioneers, Charles Stewart & Co volunteer their time. The Surf Coast Shire provided a grant to provide the very visible signs for the event. The auction has become a very big event over many years for the church and the town.

Sunday saw the Rabbit Art Rally attract visitors from Winchelsea to Shepparton, with five lucky winners receiving a tasty hamper from our local Tea Rooms.

Some of the artists in the Art Rally have received commissions, so the Sunday hunt & Gather Festival has been a hit with them.

Sandra Jones from Riverlee Art Studios is to be congratulated for her work in coordinating the Art Rally.

An MG car club enjoyed the live music by Zane Carroll this afternoon, whilst grazing on the plough-man’s platter and rabbit pie at the Barwon Hotel.

Over at the Historical Society, June Rowe and Shirley Leak were inundated with curious visitors.

And our new market was slow but steady along the river bank.

The Sunday morning tours of the Hastings Ostrich Farm was attended by many people eager to visit Australia's leading ostrich breeding farm and learn all about ostrich, their history and how farming saved them from extinction.

The early tour was booked out, with a second tour organised for early afternoon. Thanks to Hesse Health for their bus donation.

Hastings Ostrich Farms are the largest commercial ostrich farm in Australia, surviving from the 3500 ostrich farms that started in the early to mid 90’s. Visitors learnt how this farm, located in Winchelsea, survived the various challenges.

The many different breeds of ostrich were on show, including the magnificent reds, blues and blacks, and Hastings unique Whites. Visitors were also able to compare them with our native emus, also on the farm.

The guided tours also covered the history of ostrich farming, products, farming practices and lots of quirky facts about these prehistoric birds and stories about the challenges faced farming them.

Congratulations to Demi Roberton, who won the guess the weight of the ostrich egg competition. Her guess was 1.56kg and the egg weighed 1.57kg. So Demi and family will be dining on Ostrich egg (an ostrich eating egg is equivalent to 2 dozen chook eggs) and also had her choice of a blown ostrich egg shell.

Due to Biosecurity and export protocols, the hatchery farm could not be visited, but there are lots of pictures of the whole enterprise on Facebook “Hastings Ostrich Farms” and www.ostrichaustralia.com.au

Robyn Lucas, Surf Coast Shire Community Engagement Facilitator said the Surf Coast Shire looks forward to supporting 2017 Hunt & Gather festival. She congratulated the Growing Winchelsea committee and expressed huge thanks to all the participating venues, as well as the many volunteers.

“The festival has been a successful partnership between Growing Winchelsea Inc. committee, The Bendigo Community Bank and the Surf Coast Shire.

Thanks also need to go to the Winchelsea Community a House, who auspiced the funding for the arts event.

The project would not have been delivered without the passion and enthusiasm of our many working group volunteers”, said Robyn.

What a great two days! Growing Winchelsea Inc. and the Hunt & Gather Field Days Committee would like thank all sponsors, exhibitors, visitors and volunteers for making our first Hunt & Gather Winchelsea Field Days a great success.

Lead DisposalA Letter to the Editor in last week’s Star stated that if the lead that is probably in the ground on the Common were collected and sold as scrap, it could fetch between $462,240 and $747,360.

It would probably cost them that to pay all the consultants reports, environmental statements, search for aboriginal artefacts, a report on the orange bellied parrot, an investigation on the possible sighting of the rainbow striped legless lizard, not to mention the cataloguing of all the native plants existing or otherwise within a 15 kilometre radius of the proposed site of the works; and a lengthy report on the possible effects of any dust emanating from the works which would necessitate the erection of a 15 metre dust excluding fence and a roof to protect all and sundry from

the toxic, poisonous, cancer causing, perilous, possibly sight affecting and certainly breathing difficulty causing dust; and then the decontamination and disposal of the said fence, roof and the equipment use in a trench 100 metres deep in central Australia, which would necessitate all those reports being undertaken again at the disposal site. But I'm not a cynic. Am I?

Cemetary RosesI wonder what the secret is to have roses blooming all summer. ….and during the dry one we are experiencing.

Whatever it is, the gardeners at the Winchelsea cemetery has managed to do just that. My roses haven’t had

a flower for months but as I pass the cemetery most days of the week, it gives me great pleasure to look at the front entry and view the flowers.

If you haven’t taken a walk around the grounds of the cemetery in the last few years, you will be pleasantly surprised.

A credit to the Geelong Cemeteries Trust and thank you for beautifying this area of our town.

Letters to the Editor

Council Turns Senate Blowtorch On Unconventional GasSurf Coast Shire Council is continuing to express opposition to unconventional gas exploration or mining activity, by lodging a submission to a federal Senate Select Committee.

Council’s submission to the Senate Select Committee on Unconventional Gas Mining reiterates the strong community concern regarding the risks and impacts associated with any unconventional gas activity in the region.

Council has also lodged submissions to previous Victorian Parliamentary Inquiries into the industry and has called on the Victorian Premier to suspend all exploration and mining activity, continuing the current moratorium on the industry indefinitely.

There is currently one active permit

to explore for hydrocarbons active on the Surf Coast (PEP163) which was renewed in late 2015.

Winchelsea Ward Councillor Carol McGregor, said the industry posed too big a risk to vital farming land, water resources and the natural environment of the Surf Coast.

“Council is committed to supporting our residents, farmers and communities that are deeply concerned about the risk that any cessation of the Victorian moratorium on unconventional gas activity poses to our region,” Cr McGregor said.

Torquay Ward Councillor Eve Fisher said “any unconventional gas industry on the Surf Coast is completely incompatible with the natural environment that our whole region is built on”.

“We have a precious natural environment on the Surf Coast that we need to protect from threats such as those posed by potential onshore gas operations.”

Anglesea Ward Councillor Margot Smith said Council would continue to oppose unconventional gas operations because of the uncertainty and risk they presented.

“The risks to farming, to our nationally significant tourism economy and to our natural environment are simply too big, and while the unconventional gas operations are primarily regulated by state governments, Council will pursue every avenue available to us to express our opposition to the industry.”

The Senate Select Committee is due to report back to parliament before 30 June 2016.

Backward In High HeelsLike many of her heroes Kelly Auty began her singing career with a church choir, and although she trained as an opera singer, it was the great women stars of soul and r’n’b who captured her heart and mind.

Ms Auty, who is bringing her new show Backwards in High Heels to COPACC on Wednesday, April 20, as part of the centre’s Morning Music series will perform the hits of some of music’s greatest women performers from the Fifties through to the Eighties.

With her band Ms Auty will perform songs by Edith Piaf, Eartha Kitt, Patsy Cline, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox and Bette Midler plus two women she particularly identifies with Miriam Makeba and Aretha Franklin.

“I devised this show because I wanted to keep the memory of these women alive,” Ms Auty said.

“As long as we keep them in our mind’s eye we can go into the future – they’re all strong, passionate, they’ve got a lot to say, they were working in an industry controlled by the fellas, they’re stayers, and great singers.”

Ms Auty, who spent much of her childhood in the Kimberley said her early musical influences were country and folk, but she was trained by the

Canberra Opera Company for Bizet’s Carmen, before specialising in soul, rhythm and blues.

“My two boys were given to me in my early twenties and I was a single mother for many years so my main job was raising my boys and I fitted singing in around them,” said Auty, who remains grateful for her opera training.

“Opera sets you in a professional headspace, it’s really good for technique, but it’s all about precision and it’s a very strict mode.

“After opera I had to learn to relax and play with the notes more in the style of Bessie Smith and Miriam Makeba.”

Backed by Boris Conley on piano, drummer Nick Carrafa and bass player Hermann Schwaiger, Ms Auty said she would sing Janis Joplin’s Bobby

McGee and Mercedez Benz, Patsy Cline’s Crazy, Eidth Piaf’s Milord, and Sweet Dreams by Annie Lennox.

“People love the costumes, the stories between the songs, the variety, and they love the music because it’ so recognisable,” Ms Auty said.

COPACC’s Morning Music Season is sponsored by Arundell, Murray & Ryan. The show starts at 11am and there is a free morning tea served from 10am.

Bag limit reduction for golden perch anglersThe daily bag limit for recreational anglers taking golden perch from Victoria’s lakes will reduce from ten to five later this month.

Fisheries Victoria Executive Director, Travis Dowling, said the change was in response to calls from anglers and feedback from Fisheries Officers across northern Victoria last spring.

"Anglers who attended our regional forums in 2015 expressed concern that bag limit catches of large golden perch were being taken regularly by groups of anglers from several stocked lakes. We were approached by many anglers concerned that those catches, which included numerous fish of more than 3kg each, were excessive and well beyond a reasonable day’s take for the table.”

Mr Dowling said the reduced bag limit of five would protect stocked populations from over-harvest and better share the resource amongst anglers.

“Golden perch populations in lakes

are nearly all stocked and take more than a decade to establish as viable fisheries so are worthy of protection,” Mr Dowling said.

“Most of these fisheries have been created using recreational fishing licence fees and are a valuable asset for anglers, the local community and tourism associated businesses.

“The change, which will apply from 20 April 2016, simplifies the rules for freshwater anglers and brings the golden perch bag limit in line with that already in place for Victorian rivers. The change also aligns Victoria’s daily bag limit for golden perch with that of New South Wales.

The next of the monthly meetings of the Winchelsea Men's Shed is to be held this coming Wednesday, April 6th at 10.00am.

Although things have been quiet on the BBQ front, the full 2 days at the Hunt & Gather festival at the Mansion was well supported by our

members, and despite not having huge sales of the drinks and donuts, there are still plenty left for our next outing.

The completion of the display shelving in the shed showcasing children’s toys and other items is something of which to be proud.

Sadly, with the paucity of water pressure, the Community garden is suffering, and needs more hands with an interest in things green.

The inter-church Walk along the river was enhanced this year with the inclusion of a stand-alone palm tree made by shed members.

Work continues on slowly with the dust extraction system, and waiting for the extension to happen in its time.

Ladies, if you are looking for somewhere to send the hubby when he gets in the way at home, send him down to the men’s shed for the meeting this Wednesday at 10.00!!

Country Of Origin Labelling A Good First StepThe Victorian Farmers Federation has backed most of the Federal Government’s improvements to the Country of Origin labelling which will deliver clarity to consumers and a more level playing field for Australian farmers.

“These changes help rid our supermarket shelves of vague and confusing labelling and replace them with clearer Country of Origin standards,” VFF President Peter Tuohey said.

“This means consumers can trust that what they’re buying is genuinely Australian and not something made here with who knows what produce?”

However, the VFF is opposed to the use of the kangaroo logo on products which may contain as little as 10 per cent Australian ingredients.

Under the government’s labelling changes, products such as Canadian pork could be sold in Australia with the kangaroo logo, because it may contain as little as 10 per cent Australian brine and other additives (see sample attached).

“The kangaroo logo shouldn’t be anywhere near those products,” VFF Pig Group President John Bourke said.

“Meat is either grown in Australia or overseas and if it’s not grown here, then we shouldn’t be giving consumers the impression that it is by using the kangaroo logo.”

Mr Bourke said Government decision makers didn’t understand the seriousness of the issue.

“The problem is that the people making these rules are too far removed from farmers,” Mr Bourke said.

The VFF policy remains firm that any product containing less than a majority of Australian ingredients should not carry the kangaroo logo.

This label is for a food product with at least 90% imported ingredients that has undergone significant processing in Australia. In addition to the mandatory kangaroo logo, bar chart and text it provides additional information about ingredients (in this example pork from Canada). Statements about the origin of specific ingredients, whether from Australia or overseas, can be added to any label on a voluntary basis.

Tuesday 5 April, 2016 The Winchelsea Star 25

Our season opener this year was against East Geelong and with new line-ups in most grades we were very unsure how the day would pan out. To our delight we took home 3 wins, A Grade, 17 & under and 15 & Under with all other matches being very competitive.

A Grade Winchelsea 40 def East Geelong 38A superstar effort from our young A Graders today. Connie Royal (16), Ebony Berg (15) and Sarah Todd (17) debuted in A Grade in a strong and physical contest. Ebony shot and moved like an experienced adult, shooting very impressively. Sarah Todd combined well through goals and the centre court with Meg Royal running well all game. Our defenders were outstanding turning around a 7 goal deficit at three quarter time with a convincing win the last quarter 15 to 5. Connie Royal was outstanding in Goal Defence combining well with our new coach Rata Hunia. Great win for the start of the season girls.

Best Players: Connie Royal, Meg Royal and Ebony Berg

B Grade East Geelong 43 def Winchelsea 28With a new look team this year our B Grade team came out of the blocks looking very, going goal for goal with East Geelong for the first half. With Belinda Czerniawski unavailable this week Katrina Filice stepped in nicely in Goal shooter. Danielle Kuchenmeister (captain) did an exceptional job driving and passing, while Tori Hose delivered many turnovers in defence. Unfortunately we couldn’t maintain the momentum and the game slipped away in the second half.

Best Players: Katrina Filice, Danielle Kuchenmeister and Tori Hose

C Grade East Geelong 42 def Winchelsea 24We had a great start and we were leading early in the first and the game was still in reach at half time with East Geelong leading by 4 goals. Our new goaling combination of coach Sally Cole and Lydal being well supported

by Holly Worland in the centre court. Unfortunately East stepped up in the second half and we didn’t have the fitness to push out four strong quarters.

Best Players: Sally Cole, Lyndal O’Grady and Holly Worland

D Grade East Geelong 25 def Winchelsea 21A very impressive first game from our D Grade team which boasted a lot of returning players to our club and juniors. The juniors stepped up and led the defence and centre court. The girls were within range for the whole game but a second quarter break of 5 goals by East Geelong gave them the edge. We never gave up and got it back to 2 goals at one point but couldn’t quite follow through – next time girls!

Best Players: Beth Connors-Southall, Rachael Frost and Taylor Buhrmann

17 & Under Winchelsea 33 def East Geelong 25After a long season with little success last year our 17 & under team returned as top ages this year (with the addition of Ebony Berg) and have started the season with a win! Ebony Berg combined beautifully in the circle with Caitlyn Burgess moving well and shooting with accuracy. Some nerves in the first quarter had them start behind but they had their nose in front by quarter time and built on this as the game progressed. Well done girls and let’s hope this is the start of many wins!

Best Players: Connie Royal, Ebony Berg and Caitlyn Burgess

15 & Under Winchelsea 18 def East Geelong 16A great start to the game saw us breaking East’s centre and moving the ball quickly down to our young goalers. Nerves were high and shots were missed allowing the ball to go from end to end without a score well into the quarter. All defensive combinations ran smoothly with the transition from attack to defence being our strongest asset. Maddison Kattwinkel killecd it in goal keeper taking our best player for the day. A team effort to secure a good win.

Best Players: Maddison Kattwinkel,

Issy Loone and Macy Blake

13 & Under East Geelong 21 def Winchelsea 2All the girls were nervous and eager to start the new season. We have a very solid line-up of key defenders, goalers and mid-court players. This week our defenders worked hard causing many intercepts for the team. Unfortunately East Geelong’s defence line-ups boasted 2 GDFNL 2015 interleague players and our attacking team could not penetrate their defence. Our attackers, Courtney, Tori and Laura played well but I think nerves got the best of the day. Congratulations to Eve Mawson and Laura & Demi Robertson for their first game with the Winchelsea Blues.

Best Players: Indi Jenkins, Hayley Steed and Jorja Hilsdon.

WFNC Football ReportROUND 1 Welcome everyone to Round 1 Season 2016. The Blues travelled to East Geelong on Saturday for the first game of the year with a full playing list. The Club welcomes all new comers & those who have returned to play for the Blues & hope they will enjoy their playing time with the W.F.N.C.

Everyone has been keen for the start of the season to arrive & for the first siren to go. Saturday was warm & windy for the 12 o’clock side when they lined up against East. The Reserves started well and remained in the hunt at ½ time , but fell away as the game went on.

Matthew Worland is a welcome return to the Club & starred throughout the match to get “B. O. G. “ for the Blues first round. The young talent also shone on the day, some of the Reserves players have been pushed up as there is no Colts League at Winchelsea this Season. The youngsters showed plenty of promise & endeavour & were not intimidated by the opposition, Harry Kelly playing a game of note.

BEST: Matthew Worland Caleb Brown Harry Kelly Lachie King Will Thomson Adam Lubcke

GOALS: Shane Brady 2 Matthew Worland 1

The Senior side has come together

only recently, and Saturdays game would be a test of how things are starting to come together. The boys got off to a great start leading 4-3 to 2-2 at the first break. There was significant wind advantage & the Blues did well in the 2nd quarter apart from 2 very late goals just before half time, to be right in the match.

The 3rd showed East Geelong get right on top of the game with the Blues going missing for much of the quarter. However the boys regrouped & had a real go in the last kicking the last goal of the game. The new recruits showed great promise in particular Brandon Smith & Pat Caddaye-Rose, while Dave Tucker was solid all day contributing 3 goals.

BEST: Brandon Smith Jared Dunkley Pat Caddaye-Rose Dave Tucker Joel Davies Ricci Sauni

GOALS: Dave Tucker 3 Pat Caddaye-Rose 2 Kurt Berg Fergus Inglis Clinton Place Ricci Sauni & Joe Wojtowicz all 1 goal.

ROUND 2 sees the W.F.N.C. host traditional rivals Inverleigh this Saturday at Eastern Reserve. This is a twilight game commencing at 5.30pm.

The Club welcomes everyone to see the new look sides compete under the best lights in the League, as the Catering team fire up in the canteen with great “FOOTY FOOD!”

The “Blues Bistro “was back with a bang last Thursday night. Thank you to everyone for supporting the Club in this way – it’s great to see familiar

faces enjoying what the Club has to offer. And of course a big thank you to the volunteers who make it happen.

Memberships will be available again this Thursday evening, & more apparel has been ordered to keep up with demand.

This week supporters will also be able to watch not only the score, but also see our Sponsors names up in lights as the match progresses on our fabulous electronic scoreboard . Our thanks go to those Sponsors who contributed to the new scoreboard these include the Bendigo Bank, AFL Victoria, the Winchelsea Cricket Club, & the G.D.F.L..

Footnote: All at the W.F.N.C. are so pleased for and proud of our No1 Ticket Holder Darcy Parish. Darcy has already shown that he can match it with the big boys at A.F.L. level ,showing last Saturday he has taken the style and composure always shown as a Junior to the elite level that is the A.F.L.

GO DARC ! GO BLUES !
