Directed by Paul Galichia, Brian Wei-dling • 94 min. • USA/Canada • 2011 • Not Rated. Poll after poll has foundthat people’s number one fear is public speaking—the fear of death is numbertwo. Which means, Jerry Seinfeld once quipped, the average person who goesto a funeral would rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy. This docu-mentary follows six contestants from widely disparate backgrounds who haveovercome seemingly insurmountable personal and professional difficulties—and channeled those difficulties into a five-to-seven-minute speech.Saratoga Springs is home to two Toastmasters clubs—Thorobred Toastmas-ters and Turf Talkers—and there are more than 30 others from Queensburyto Albany. Members from these clubs will lead a conversation following thescreening. If you have ever wanted—or needed—to develop your own publicspeaking skills, you won’t want to miss this event. For shrubs near the house, there’s the danger of ice and snow falling from the roof and crushing them. The best way to prevent this is to cover them with wooden A-frame shrub covers. Naturally
arrives. Not only will wood shrub covers keep the plants from having their branches broken, but they’ll also provide some protection from winter wind. To help your wood shrub covers last, it’s a good idea to apply a wood preservative just as you would for a wooden deck.
Cold, Drying Wind
Remember that desiccation (dehydration) is the greatest threat to landscape plantings. The cold arctic wind that blows from the north and west is the worst culprit. The sun contributes to the drying effect, especially in late winter when the plants are still dormant and unable to take up moisture. Rhododendron, Holly, Laurel, and other broadleaf evergreens are in the worst danger of being damaged by desiccation. Though they are evergreens, they still enter a dormant stage as the ground freezes. This means that whatever moisture within them at the time they go dormant is all they have to make it through until spring. Any rain will keep evaporation to a minimum, but the dry, windy, frigid days of January and February will give these plants little respite.
Constructing burlap windbreaks is a good way to protect evergreens. I drive hardwood stakes about a foot into the ground and staple burlap to them, leaving the top open. The idea is to block as much wind as possible. If I covered the top, the shrub could be crushed if too much snow accumu-lates. Leaving the top open allows rain and snow to pass through, refreshing the shrub as much as possible. For recently planted (within the last 2-3 years) evergreen hedges (arborvitae, etc.), install a row of stakes on the west or north side and attach burlap to them. Remember, wind coming from the east or south is warmer and gentler. Construct your windbreak so it protects plants from the much harsher prevailing winds that blow from the north and west.
A less visually intrusive way to protect shrubs and trees is to apply anti-desiccant spray. These sprays coat the leaves and stems, helping prevent moisture loss over winter. The spray should be applied on a dry day when temperatures are above freezing. This will give the spray a chance to dry without freezing. If we get a January thaw, it’s a good idea to spray again for an added measure of protection. In spring, when the plant swells with new growth, the anti-desiccant coating cracks and falls away. Look for a product from Bonide called Wilt-Stop. You can also use these sprays on your Christmas tree or wreath to greatly reduce needle drop over the holidays.
Snow, ice and wind aren’t the only threats to our landscape plants in winter. There are also hungry animals out there looking for food, and unfortunately, many of our landscape plants are on their menu. So how do we keep mice and deer from making a meal of our plants? In the depths of winter, deer become desperate. They are normally shy about coming close to humans, but when they get hungry enough, they’ll overcome their fear and make a meal of our shrubs and trees by
There are sprays that are quite effective at keeping deer and mice at bay. Applying animal repel-lent sprays in fall and spring trains them to avoid the treated plants since there are smells and tastes they don’t like on them. Unfortunately these sprays are only effective for a couple of weeks, and it is impossible to reapply them during the frozen depths of winter. For absolute deer protection, you’ll need a physical barrier. To protect small fruit trees, wrap the trunk with a barrier so they can’t get at the bark. For small trees with straight trunks there is a vinyl wrap that is easy to ap-ply…just wrap it around the trunk and your tree will be safe from deer. Notice that the wrap has holes in it to allow the trunk to breathe. For trees with crooked trunks, you’ll need to use the original paper tree wrap. This product has been around so long that your great-grandfather might have used it. It’s also the right choice when you need to protect against mouse damage. Mice and
of winter. If the damage is severe enough, the tree will never leaf out again and die. Paper tree wrap allows you to wrap the trunk right down to the soil so the mice will never be tempted to take a bite. Once fruit trees get old enough and develop the rough bark of a mature tree, the mice and deer won’t bother them anymore.
nutrient-packed buds are just what the deer need in the depths of winter. Eating the buds will not
new buds in spring. The only way to prevent this is by creating an enclosure of deer netting to keep them at bay. For a plant like the lilac (pictured above), I pounded three metal stakes into the ground and screwed a wooden stake to each. Then I stapled deer netting to the stakes forming a deer proof enclosure. If you have evergreens like arborvitae that deer love to eat, wrap the deer netting directly around the evergreen without using any stakes. Deer netting is made of plastic, and with a little care, it can be reused for many years. Thanks for the read.

How to make your holiday season more eco-friendlyCome the holiday season, it can be easy to overlook certain things, like eco-friendly living, in aneffort to make entertaining easier. The holiday season has become a time of excess, with largemeals, an overabundance of presents and other wasteful measures. This year, environmentallyconscious hosts can make an effort to make their celebrations more environmentally friendly.
* Purchase locally made gifts to reduce the amount of shipping required. This cuts down on ma-terials used and fossil fuels that power planes or cargo ships needed to transport products madeoverseas.
* According to the Environmental Protection Agency, roughly 40 percent of all battery sales takeplace during the holidays. Consumers concerned about the effect of batteries on the environmentcan give only battery-free gifts.
* Make your own gifts. Not all gifts have to be bought at the store. There are many meaningfulgifts that can be made by hand, and homemade gifts cut back on potentially harmful productionpractices and transportation.
* Rely on natural items when decorating your home. When decking the halls this holiday season, collect pine cones and holly from outdoors and make garlands from raffia or vines. These mate-rials can be put into compost heaps or ground up into mulch later on, reducing waste.
* Cut back on lighting by reducing the number of lights you string up on your home and choosingenergy-efficient lights. LED lights, which use up to 95 percent less energy than traditional bulbs,is another way to leave a smaller carbon footprint this holiday season.
* Avoid especially flashly wrapping paper. Glossy or metallic wrapping paper is hard to recycle.Use paper made of natural fibers or select plain postage paper and dress up presents with reusableribbons and bows. HL13C809

Did you know?Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms fromthe natural decay of uranium found in many soils. Colorless andodorless, radon can significantly increase a person's risk of lungcancer. Smokers who live in homes with high radon levels areespecially susceptible to lung cancer. Radon can enter a homeby moving up through the soil beneath a home and finding itsway through cracks and holes in the foundation. Many peoplemay feel homes with basements are especially susceptible toradon, but radon can enter a home whether the home has a base-ment or not. Granite countertops may emit radon, but not alwaysat levels that cause cancer. Countertops can be tested for radonemissions, and such testing is inexpensive and quick.FH139467

WARM UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS!
Tree lighting tipsLighting a Christmas tree may seem like child's play, but time and again people struggle with thetask. Untangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but lighting atree doesn't have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the professionals. First, keep inmind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn't produce amulti-dimensional effect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famoustree year after year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember toplug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacingof lights to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. Stringan inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lights on top to increase visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of thelights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs. HL12C758

NEED CASH For The
Holidays?
Great gifts for new homeowners Buying a home can be one of the most rewarding experiences in a person's life. It also can beone of the most stressful.
New homeowners are faced with many expenses after buying a home, and the holiday season isa great time to help them out with a thoughtful gift for the place they now call home. The follow-ing are some great gift ideas for the new homeowner on your holiday shopping list.
* How-to books: Owning a home presents many opportunities for repairs and renovations. Of-tentimes, this is a homeowner's initial foray into do-it-yourself projects, so consider giving a li-brary of instructional books that walk homeowners through some basics, like plumbing, electricalwork or basic construction.
* Personalized key chains: A new home means a new set of keys to the front door. Have keychains monogrammed and gift with a bottle of champagne to toast the new residence.
* Welcome mat: Welcome mats can be customized with the owner's last name, and some cus-tomizing services also can print an image on a door mat or a quirky saying.
* Door knocker: Although door bells have replaced door knockers for practical use, a nice metaldoor knocker still makes a decorative statement on the front door. Have the door knocker engravedwith the family name.
* Gift certificate: A new home means new projects large and small. Homeowners will be makingfrequent trips to the home improvement center, and such trips can get costly. A gift card will helplessen that financial burden.
* Home warranty: Third-party companies sell home warranties that can cover the costs of repairson major home systems. To new homeowners, the peace of mind of knowing the HVAC systemor a major appliance can be repaired or replaced at minimal cost could make this gift invaluable.
* Portrait: Give the gift of memories by setting up a photo session with a photographer that en-ables the new homeowners to have a print made that can be hung up and enjoyed.
* Tool gift basket: Homeowners can always use nails, screws, hammers, picture-hanging kits, painter's tape, and the other odds and ends that go into making repairs.
* Furniture: Ask the homeowner what room needs furnishing and offer to purchase one or morepieces for the space.
* Linens:Guests might be stopping by to see the new house, so a gift of sheets for the guest roomor hand towels will ensure the place is stocked for anyone who drops by.
* Dining out certificates: People who have just moved into a home may be so busy with projectsthat they don't have time to make sit-down meals. Therefore, a gift card to a favorite restaurantcan provide a welcome respite from takeout.
* Security system: Homeowners who want to protect their new asset may appreciate a home se-curity system.
* Money: Buying a home is an expensive endeavor, and new homeowners may be feeling thepinch of an overextended budget. Sometimes cash makes the most thoughtful gift.
New homeowners are faced with many situations that can be both exciting and stressful as theymove into new homes. Many gifts can make the process of settling in that much easier.HL12C714
