Saratoga 150 Window DecoratingContest Winners AnnouncedSARATOGA SPRINGS - To celebrate the sesquicentennial ofracing at Saratoga, the Saratoga 150 committee engineered awindow display contest with the theme of equine racing. Thejudging was held on Saturday, July 13. 2013. The judge, fromNorthampton, MA, was so impressed with the originality andcreativity that she went back the next morning to confirm herfindings. There were so many windows capable of winning thatsix runners up were named. The third place window was in G.Willikers. The silver went to Impressions and the win went toLifestyles. Honorable mentions, in alphabetical order were:Aggie Mullaney, Compliments to the Chef, Crafters Gallery, Hatsational, Paper Dolls and Silverwood. As with Silverwood, notjust Broadway was decorated. On Phila St was Creative Sparks,Miss Scarlett’s Women’s Boutique and on Henry St was LittleRed Millinery. Skidmore Apartments also created a lovelywreath placed on their sculptured horse. The judge said that herhometown was similar in population to Saratoga Springs. TheirMain St, although smaller than ours, is quite similar with smallshops and a vibrancy that lasts into the evening. She hopes totake back to her town some of these great ideas. All in all, it isa great addition to our downtown and a few more windows willbe decorated prior to the first day’s races at Saratoga.

It would seem that no gardening task could be easier than watering. While that’s true, there are right and wrong ways to water to keep your plants healthy and conserve water.

Let’s start with the lawn. Traditional wisdom tells us that, for a lawn to re-main healthy, it needs an inch of water a week. What you need to know though, is

that you should be watering your lawn heavily then not at all for a week or so. With a limited amount of water available to most of us, we have the tendency to try and move the sprinkler around the yard to make sure that we get the whole lawn watered at one time without any regard to whether it is getting enough water for more than temporary relief. I’d like to suggest a different way. If you have watering restrictions that only allow you to water every other day for two hours, let your lawn sprinkler soak one area for the full two hours. When your next watering opportunity arrives, move the lawn sprinkler to the next section and soak it with at least an inch of water. Folks with under-ground sprinkling systems need to follow the same advice. Often these systems can be programmed to water different zones so they set them up to water each zone every day. Instead, set them up to soak one zone each day with an inch of water then do a different zone the next day. The reason for all this is to take the best advantage of the limited water we have. By putting an inch of water on the lawn, you’ll be soaking the soil to a depth of 6”.
