It looks like summer has arrived. What a joy this warm stretch has been. Our gardens have

veggies all planted the weekend after Memorial Day.

Along with hot summer weather come the fungal diseases. Most of us are familiar with powdery mildew and black spot. Anyone who’s grown phlox, melons, squash or beans has probably seen powdery mildew. A plant under attack from this common fungal disease will exhibit misshapen leaves that seem to be coated with white powder. Black spot, another fungal disease, causes black spots (logically enough) to appear on the leaves followed by a gradual yellowing of the leaf. Black spot is very common on roses. These diseases start out as tiny spores present in the soil or on the stem of the dormant plant. When conditions be-come right, they incubate and develop into a growing organism. Once these fungal diseases take hold, you’ll have no option but to spray with a fungicide or, in extreme cases, remove the infected plant. Fortunately, there are preventive measures that you can take to keep fungal diseases from taking hold in your garden.

We can get a clue how to avoid fungal diseases by thinking about one that we humans are susceptible to: Athlete’s Foot. We know that if we constantly wear damp, dirty sneakers, we increase the chances that we’ll get a case of Athlete’s Foot. We avoid Athlete’s Foot by dry-ing our shoes between use, and we always (at least I hope you do) put on clean socks before we put our sneakers on. The tactics we use to prevent the spores of Athlete’s Foot from tak-ing hold are quite similar to how we can prevent powdery mildew and other fungal diseases

Good garden hygiene. First, avoid working in your gardens when the plants are wet. When you handle wet plants, you may be spreading the spores of fungal diseases from plant

favorable. Wait until the plants have dried completely before you handle them. If you are pruning plants that are susceptible to these diseases (like roses), clean the blades of your pruners with chlorine bleach as you move from plant to plant. This will help to prevent the spread of diseases.

Keep your gardens well weeded. Weeds may play host to a disease that won’t affect them but your garden plants may not be so lucky. Weeds are also a good place for insect pest to hide out.

MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, try not to wet the leaves of your plants when watering. DON”T SPRAY THEM WITH WATER! This spring, our garden has already been subjected to too much damp weather. When you wet the leaves, you’re creating the soggy condition that fungal diseases love (and your plants hate). Give them a break and buy a watering wand so you can soak the soil while wetting the leaves as little as possible. To me, spraying

those commercials on TV showing folks, who supposedly know better, misting down the

best avoided in the outdoor garden. In addition to promoting fungal diseases, spraying your plants with water washes away the pollen. Once this happens, the plant has no use for the

get much fruit. Did you really do all that work planting just to sabotage your own effort by spray watering.

Those who read me regularly know that I feel strongly about this, so remember: when it gets hot, you may need to go soak your head but your plants need to enjoy the dry heat as much as you’ll let them. Besides, plants absorb water through their roots, not the leaves and

with a nice cold glass of water. What would you want me to do with it? Give it to you to drink or throw it in your face. Stop being mean to your gardens and don’t spray your plants with water. Give them a nice cool drink instead. Thanks for the read.

DID YOU KNOW?Landscape fabrics are used to prevent weed growth whilestill allowing air, oxygen and water to flow to and from thesoil. Landscape fabrics are a chemical-free way to preventweed growth, endearing them to eco-friendly homeown-ers. Landscape fabrics, once laid, also are a far less labor-intensive method to prevent weed growth, as they can beeffective for several years, during which homeowners canexpect to perform little or no maintenance. In addition, many homeowners prefer landscape fabrics because theycan help the soil effectively maintain moisture during dryperiods, when gardens might otherwise be highly suscep-tible to drought. Once put down, landscape fabric can becovered with mulch to add aesthetic appeal.

HOME TIPIf there is a custom tile or specific design that you reallylike that is not within your budget for the entire kitchen orbathroom, think about using it as an accent instead. Relyon less expensive tiles for much of the room, then sprinklein the accent tiles for the style you want. The finished proj-ect will look high-end, but you will likely have stayed withinyour budget. You also can save money by shopping at areuse center or one that sells remnants and leftover ma-terials from larger jobs. For example, it's possible to finda piece of marble or granite that would fit perfectly as acountertop in a bathroom.

THE BASICS OF CLEANING WINDOWSAfter a long winter of snow and ice, many people are ready for the warmth and sunshinesynonymous with spring. But dirty windows can block that sunshine from finding its wayinto a home. Washing windows can be quite an undertaking, particularly in those homeswith many windows on multiple levels. However, there are several time-saving tips avail-able that can cut the work considerably.

* Save window washing for a cloudy day. Otherwise, the warmth and sunlight may drythe cleaning solution too quickly and you will be left with streaks on your windows.

* Vacuum windowsills and tracks first to remove a good deal of dust and debris. This willreduce the amount of dirt you smear onto the windows while cleaning them.

* Use a combination of a sponge soaked in cleaning solution and a squeegee to getreally clean windows. The squeegee helps to prevent streaks and cut down on the timeit takes the windows to dry, all the while helping the windows to sparkle.

* Window screens may be the culprit behind dingy windows. Hose down the screenswith water to clean them, using a mild cleaning solution if water is ineffective.

* Working with a partner can make the task go much more quickly. One person can cleanthe exteriors of the windows while the other does the interiors.

* A mild dishwashing liquid diluted in water can cut through dirt and grime. For stubborndirt, wash windows with diluted ammonia or vinegar.

* Use a glass-cleaning tool to clean hard-to-reach windows. A telescoping cleaning tooland pad can make it safer to reach windows that are high up.

DID YOU KNOW?Tis the season for barbecues, picnics and outdoor entertaining. As the weather warms, people take to the outdoors in droves, eager to enjoy the sunshine and the pleasant tem-peratures. Some may argue that grills, with their charcoal and natural gas heating com-ponents sending carbon gases into the air, are bad for the environment. But thedisposable plastic containers, dishes and cutlery that are staples of outdoor entertainingmay be more harmful to the environment. In addition to the energy expended and thechemicals used to produce plastic products, disposable items often end up in stormdrains, and from those drains they wash into waterways and oceans, where pieces ofthe plastic are consumed by fish and other aquatic animals. If the plastic does not injureor kill the fish, it may end up contaminating the animal, passing on dangerous chemicalsif that fish later becomes a food source. Many plastics marked as #1 or #7 can be recy-cled and made into new items, even fabrics. Even plastic products that cannot be recy-cled can be reused. Bring picnic and barbecue supplies home to wash and use again. To cut down on excess in landfills, limit use of disposable serviceware. While less con-venient, cloth napkins, reusable plates, silverware, and cups are better for the environ-ment. Designate a special set of items for outdoor use that can be used again and again.

DID YOU KNOW?Many flowers compete with one another to attract butterflies, birds and bees for pollina-tion, but at least two species of flowering plants have enhanced their ability to attract in-sects in unique ways. The titan arum (Amorphophallus titanium) is native to westernSumatra, where it grows in openings in rainforests. It is the largest unbranched flower inthe world and can reach up to 15 feet tall. But this alone is not what makes the titan arumso special. It is unwise to step in close to get a whiff of this enormous bloom, as the plantgives off a rancid odor reminiscent of rotting meat. It is sometimes known as the carrionplant or the corpse plant for this reason. The plant has created this scent to attract fliesfor pollination. The rafflesia, which is native to southeastern Asia as well, is another plantthat produces a rotting aroma to attract insects. The rafflesia has no stems, leaves ortrue roots -- it's basically one large flower.

PROTECTING AGAINST SUN DAMAGE WHILE IN A CAR(NAPSI)—The average American spends more than 101 minutes a day in a car. Unfor-tunately, what many drivers and passengers fail to realize is that when they are in a car,not all the danger they face is on the road.

Both drivers and passengers are often exposed to harmful ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, par-ticularly from the side windows of the cars in which they ride.

“Damage from certain kinds of ultraviolet rays is cumulative,” says Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, vice chair of the dermatology department at St. Louis University. “These rays penetratedeep into the skin and can silently accelerate the aging process, cause wrinkles andeven skin cancer.”

Fortunately, adding a UVA-blocking film or tint to car windows can be an effective way tohelp block damaging rays and protect yourself while you drive.

For example, a range of window film options, sold under the brand name LLumar, provideUV protection. There’s even a clear film that appeals to those who do not want a darkerwindow appearance, or where the use of dark films is prohibited by state law. When ap-plied over ordinary automotive glass, this film’s virtually invisible protection blocks morethan 99 percent of harmful UV rays.* LLumar window film acts as “sunscreen”—offeringdaily sun protection with a one-time application.
