Fear of Seeds. I deal with a lot of beginning vegetable gardeners when I’m out at the garden centers. Among these well-meaning folks there seems to be a nearly universal fear of planting seeds. They’ll come to the garden center looking for corn or beans already started in a six pack. Six corn plants won’t provide much of a crop and an entire packet of corn seeds (enough to grow several small rows of corn) can be purchased for the same price as six plants. When I suggest this to the new gardener the response is usually “I never have luck with seeds” or “I can’t get into all that.”
I have to say that there really isn’t anything at all difficult about starting seeds directly in the garden...much easier than starting seeds indoors in winter. Some seeds like tomatoes and peppers must be started inside in March but the real value (savings) to be gained from vegetable gardening is from crops that we seed directly in the garden. Lettuce and all the other greens like chard and spinach are good examples. Radishes are also very rewarding since you can sow a row every two weeks and they grow and mature in less than a month. First, go to the garden center and pick up the “Vegetable Schedule”. It is a wonderful resource for the beginning gardener showing when the different plants and seeds should be planted. You can get one at any Hewitt’s Garden Center.
Let’s take a look at beans...according to the vegetable schedule you can start sowing them in early May or anytime through the third week of July. As you can see, there’s plenty of time to start a crop or two of beans. Now let’s take a look at a bean seed pack. These are bush beans so no support is necessary. The front of the pack is pretty but the back has complete growing instructions. This is pretty simple stuff honest!Let’s go step by step. I’ve made a little trench 2” deep as per the instructions and placed the seeds at the bottom. Then I cover them with 2” of soil and water them in. I like to use potting soil to cover them since it looks different than the garden soil so I know I’m watering the right area. Now I just need to keep them moist and they’ll sprout in a week or less. After a couple of weeks they’ll be all up and sprouted. I had to thin them out by removing any that were closer together than 6” spacing the seed pack indicated I should have. Let me illustrate “’thinning out” the crop using Mesclun Mix...those tasty greens we pay so much for at the market. Mesclun Mix is a blend of lettuce and other greens. As you can see the seeds are tiny. I followed the directions and planted them too close together knowing that I’d be back later to thin them out. They came up too close together so I need to pull some out. This is the part beginners have trouble with but, if you don’t thin them out, they will crowd each other and the crop won’t be as good. Sometimes less is more.
That’s pretty much it. All seeds work the same way...corn, beets, radishes and so on. All you need is a little patch of soil and the ability to read the back of a seed pack. Learn to use your Vegetable Schedule to time your plantings. Once you go through a season with well timed plantings, you’ll see that it is possible to get a great deal of food from even a small plot. Learn to read the information on the seed packs and trust the seeds. This is the way to really make your garden pay maximum dividends.
“It’s too late to plant s vegetable garden.” This is also something beginners like to believe...that they’ve missed the opportunity to have a vegetable garden once Memorial Day has passed. If you spend some time with the vegetable schedule you’ll soon see that vegetables aren’t something that you “plant in the spring and harvest in the fall”. There is a huge planting season that won’t even start until late June and into July.
As our early crops of spinach, lettuce and others bolt in the summer’s heat, it is time to rip them out to open up space for the crop we sow in summer. Here’s a little list of “mid summer sowers” and you can refer to your Vegetable Schedule for even more. It is easy to forget the garden in summer but this is your best opportunity to really take advantage of summer heat to get fall crops up quickly for a large fall harvest. Many cool season greens that mature in September taste better than their spring counterparts so summer sowing is a huge opportunity.
Seed packs are cheap so play around with them. There are plenty at the garden center so take some
harvested into October most years. There’s something quite rewarding about starting your crops from seed right in the garden. Try it out...you’ll be hooked in no time. Thanks for the read.

These babies mother was dropped off at a mobile home park a few days before she gave
birth. She had her pups under a trailer and our rescue volunteers moved to a safer, healthier
location as soon as they could. Mama has found a wonderful home but her pups are still in need
of placement. They are 8 - 9 weeks old and weigh about 7 lbs. They have been vet checked,
dewormed and given first vaccines.
These two were rescued from Vidalia Shelter along with four more pups that already went
to rescue. They were very sickly and had a skin condition. They have been extensively treated by a vet and have been in a foster home since 5/7 where they are doing great! Eating every
bite, vaccinated them 5/12, wormed. They are both doing awesome and ready for a rescue.
Named them Luke and Mack.
These two beauties are at least half lab. Their dad was
a pur bred lab and their mom was a lab mix. They are as sweet as can be and have
been vet checked. Given first shots and de-wormed.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER IS AS CLOSE ASYOUR LIBRARY
CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millionsof people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is avail-able for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries inthe form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries havean older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, someof whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasingthey face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel aboutthemselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child WhoStutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available freeof charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact theFoundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

PRAYER TO THEBLESSED VIRGIN
(Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. HOW TO PURCHASE YOUR FIRST HOME IN 2015(NAPSI)—The American dream of homeownership may not be as hard to attain as manypeople seem to fear. A few intriguing facts and hints can help.
The FactsWhile existing home sales have risen recently, the National Association of Realtors’ an-nual Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers found that the share of first-time buyers recentlyfell to its lowest level (33 percent) in nearly three decades. Many first-time buyers expe-rience obstacles on the path to homeownership, including difficulty saving for a downpayment and tight credit conditions.
The HintsConsider these tips:• Find and work with an expert Realtor who knows the neighborhood. Nothing can re-place the local knowledge and real insight that professional Realtors can provide to first-time buyers as they navigate the complex home buying process.According to the Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, while most home buyers in thepast year began their home search online, 90 percent ended up purchasing their homethrough an agent. Realtors are not only the source of online real estate data, they alsouse their unparalleled local market knowledge and resources to help close the deal forbuyers and sellers.• Meet with a lender to determine how much you can afford. Last year, the median pricea first-time buyer spent on a home was $169,000. Chances are, you don’t have thatamount of cash lying around. That’s why 95 percent of first-time buyers who bought ahome in the past year financed their purchase.Find out what you can afford with a preapproval from a lender. A lender will check yourcredit history, current debt obligations and other expenses to determine the amount ofmoney you’re qualified to borrow at a specific interest rate. Don’t forget to consider theother costs of homeownership, such as taxes, insurance and utilities.• Identify your housing wish list. Although 46 percent of first-time buyers got a single-family home in the suburbs, you may prefer a condo in an urban environment near publictransportation.Regardless of your preferences, identifying and sharing your wish list can help your Re-altor focus on the right home for you, scan listings and connect with those who representsellers to zero in on homes for sale that meet your budget and criteria.Keep this advice in mind and you may soon find yourself waking up in the home of yourdreams.
