OCTOBER 1, "THE MAGIC DAY"

I had no idea! I had never heard of such a thing! Could it be true? Was October 1 such a magical day? You see, when I graduated from Claremont School of Theology in California where I grew up, I was immediately appoint-ed to a church in Arizona. Prior to that I had only visited Arizona twice and both times for quick weekend church related youth and young adult events. On both those trips I made no special notice of the grass in Arizona. Grass, you ask? Yes, when I was appointed to my first assignment as a youth and young adult pastor at Para-dise Valley United Methodist Church, I learned about the vegetation in this state. I was sitting with my first senior pastor, Don Sapp and his wife Joann, when she said, "You Californians have no idea how hard it is to grow flow-ers here. In California, whatever you plant, grows! Here, you have to really work at it". In a naïve sort of way, I asked, "why?" She said, "Because of the heat!" Then she went on to explain about all those odd and new terms like, "over-seeding" and "winter-seeding grass". It was so weird to me. In California, you did simply plant flowers and they would either grow all year around, or come back on their own the next year. The overwhelming thing to me was all this new information about lawns. Oh, my goodness, in California it simply grows all year round and it stays green all year round. I have learned a lot and have evolved into an Arizonan over time. I now plant flowers and then struggle to keep them alive when it gets hot. I now over-seed and enjoy my lawns, the summer one and the winter one. It is now quite entertaining when my California relatives come to visit and I get to explain it all to them. I even had a Cali-fornia friend come to visit and stood looking up at a saguaro cactus and asked, "Is it real?" So, I was told that October 1 was the magic day to remind everyone when to transition lawns from the summer ones to the winter ones. Interesting enough, it is amazing how right at October 1 you see green belts of lawn be-ing mowed for winter seed. Another interesting thing is that people start their winter gardens around October 1 as well. Amazingly those winter gardens start growing at this time as well. As for the church, it also grows around October 1. Our winter members and visitors start their annual trek back to Arizona and back to Willowbrook United Methodist Church. We will joyfully welcome back friends to church. Along with them will come first-time "winter visitors." In a spiritual and biblical understanding, the church is only complete when everyone who God leads to this church is welcomed and involved. The best part of the October 1 magical season, is that it is a new opportunity to welcome those first time visitors. It is not easy to go and visit a church for the first time. Think back to when you did it. So my challenge to all our regular attendees is to remember what it was like to visit somewhere new and then to seek out those visitors, greet them, and make them feel wanted and loved. Evangelism begins at home. We often think that evangelism only happens away from church. It starts right here on Sunday morning. October is growing season. God trusts us with the people led to this church. So let's put to practice our understanding of hospitality and watch God bless both them and us as we grow God's church. After all, magic happens in October.

See you in church!!

Pastor Gary

BLANKETS FOR CHILDREN

How can using scissors to cut a 4 inch fringe and making double knots affect the

life of a child in a far-away place? Rev. Kennedy recently reported to the Kris Krafters that his daughter Hannah and her school group will be taking warm blankets made by the Kris Krafters to an orphanage in rural Mexico. These colorful fleece blankets are simple to assemble. The Kris Krafters who work on cutting and tying the fringe have lots of fun as they work together, and welcome anyone interested in helping.

In addition, the Kris Krafters are working on Holiday gift and craft items that will be offered at the annual Holidaze Craft Faire November 2 and 3. Check the weekly bulletin for further information about Workshop dates and times. The Kris Kraft-ers will be accepting items made at home for the Craft Faire at their meetings in October, and will be pricing and organiz-ing the donations.

The Kris Krafters meet in Wilson Fellowship Hall at 9:00 a.m. on the first and third Thursday of each month. Come join this warm and welcoming group on October 4 and October 18.

SMILE FOR THE CAMERA!

That’s right! It’s time to update our pho-to directory! Can you believe that it has been 3 years since the last directory was done? The first set of photos will be taken Tuesday, November 27 through Saturday, December 1. We will take a break for the holidays and take pictures again Wednesday, January 2 through Saturday, January 5. If there is still a need for additional sittings, pictures will be taken Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9. Sign-ups will begin in October. Watch for more specific information soon. Lifetouch will provide an 8 x 10 photograph for each family group photographed along with a directory. We have chosen to use the Community Connect option for the directory this time. That means that when we have 15 families that either need a new photo taken because of a change in the family status or (this is the really good part) when new members join, we are able to do an update. Updated printed books will include original photographs (for up to 4 years), new photographs and an updated roster. After 4 years it will be time to do an-other book. What will we need? Everyone to have their photo taken, volunteers to help with signing people up for their photo session and individuals to sign people in when the pho-tos are being taken. If you are interested in volunteering please call Bev in the church office, 623-974-5637. A training meeting will be held in October before we begin the scheduling process.

“The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end’.” Luke 1:30-33

Do you like to shop early for Christmas? Do you like to find a large variety of gifts in a single location? Visit Willowbrook

United Methodist Church’s Holidaze Craft Faire on Friday and Saturday, November 2 & 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. where you will see over 100 tables of award-winning artisans, ven-dors and our own Kris Krafters. Throughout the day enjoy var-ious raffles, Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe featuring homemade treats and a delicious lunch served 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Craft Faire committee is especially excited that the al-ways popular Will’s Mobil Sharpening Service will again be providing his services at the Faire this year. He will be available in the parking lot to sharpen knives, scis-sors, clipper blades, garden and shop tools, chainsaws, hedge trimmers and more—all at reasonable prices. Keep this in mind when you try cutting something and the cutter does not do it’s job! Right then put a sticker on it saying, “Take me to the Faire!” You will be glad you did! You may remember one of our Holidaze Craft Faire vendors of years past is Sara Cleary with Usborne Books and More. She gives 50% of her profits in books to a charity of our choosing. The books and activities make great gifts for your grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We are again desig-nating the donation to the Child Development Department at UMOM for their “Read to Me” program. Besides the donations to UMOM from Usborne Books and More, the Holidaze Craft Faire gives support to the church’s Outreach and Mission projects. It also provides fellowship time as we work together in preparation and organization. We need lots of extra hands for planning, set-up, baking, lunch preparation, raffle sales and more. Sign-ups for working at the Faire will begin Saturday and Sunday October 20-21. If you have questions, contact Barb Christie at 623-376-7941 or [email protected].

WILLOWBROOK BOOK CLUB

Willowbrook readers! Here is an update on our plans for Willowbrook Book Club for the next few months. We’ve been having some lively discussions, and they

are all books that have been highly recommended. Please know you are welcome to join us on any of these dates:

◊ Oct. 25—”Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Win-gate

◊ Nov. 29—”The Red Tent” by Anita Diamant

Remember, everyone is welcome. Our usual meet-ing day is the 4th Thursday of each month at 1:00 p.m. in the Library Lounge (although you will see we moved the November date back to avoid Thanksgiving). If you have suggestions of books to read, please bring them! Like further information? Contact Karen Gurian 480-371-6980 or Barb Christie 623-376-7941.

GriefShare is a nationally known support group for people grieving loss through death. Using a video featuring experts on grief, along with a workbook and group

discussion we help each other sort through those erratic emo-tions and peaks and valleys. Each session is “self-contained” so you can attend any time you want and you do not have to attend in sequence. No mat-ter when you begin, you will find encouragement. You do not have to be a member of or attend the church to be a part of the GriefShare program. GriefShare at Willowbrook United Methodist Church, meets each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Library Lounge. Following is the repeating GriefShare meeting schedule at Willowbrook: October 3 Grief and Your Relationships October 10 Why? October 17 Guilt and Anger October 24 Complicating Factors October 31 Surviving the Holidays November 7 Stuck November 14 Lessons of Grief: Part One November 21 Lessons of Grief: Part Two November 28 Heaven December 5 What Do I Live for Now? December 12, 19, 26 New Beginnings ** New Beginnings is an informal grief-sharing group under the leadership of Pastor Sande Kimbel, Jean Preisendorf, and Diane Nelson. The group meets to support people who have lost family members or friends through death. The goal is a celebration of life, spiritual growth, personal reflection, stress relief, and an increased capacity toward happiness following loss.

Remember or honor a loved one with the UMW Mission Candle. Make your $15 check payable to United Methodist Women and place it in the special envelope in the pew pocket. Drop into the offering plate to help support UMW mission projects.

THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION! We appreciate all the calls that we have been receiving letting us know the recycle bin is

full. Yes, we know that, but unfortunately there really isn’t anything the office or the Trustees can do about it. They are scheduled to dump the bin on Saturdays, but if they do not come, we have to wait for the next Satur-day. The company is based on the east side of town and, despite the fact that it is full, it is not cost effective to drive to Willowbrook just to pick up the paper from our bin. We keep the bin here as a courtesy to Willowbrookers and the neighborhood; trust us it is not here because it is a money-maker for the church. So, if the bin is full please be patient and hopefully the next time you come to dump paper there will be room.
