The Willunga Waldorf School Autumn Fair is on Saturday April 5th 2014 from 10am until 4pm at 1 Jay Drive Willunga. From a modest beginning in Bethany Hall on Strout Road, Mc Laren Vale to our beautiful and ever evolving grounds in Jay Drive, Willunga Waldorf School has certainly come a long way. Throughout its 25 years, the school has maintained a strong commitment to the outdoor environment. Our gardens are lovingly maintained and continuously developed by a dedicated group of

gardeners and parents. A walk through our playgrounds will reveal an assortment of climbing and play equipment which closely parallels the physical developmental needs of the children through each stage. The annual Autumn Fair is an enjoyable family day in a unique atmosphere. Visitors will experience the charm of a village fair with live music and entertainment, taste delicious local produce from our good food stalls, relax and savour the best coffee with a piece of homemade cake and explore the marketplace for books, plants and more. There are excellent handmade craft items and toys on sale and many children’s craft activities. Development of the

gardens and grounds has proceeded hand in hand with the school’s physical expansion. In recent years, a beautiful new library (whose form mimics that of an open book) and Hall have complemented other specialist facilities for Science and Technical Studies. Currently, our new middle school building is nearing completion. The classrooms will be open at the Autumn Fair with children’s work on display and teachers available to answer questions. We invite you to step into a Waldorf School classroom and experience the difference!

WBTA AGM July 23rd 7.30pm Alma Hotel The Willunga Business and Tourism Association committee would love to see some new faces at the meetings – not that we’re completely tired of the old faces – but it is the way committees regenerate and we do welcome new ideas and initiatives. At the moment we are involved with the planning under the overall management of the City of Onkaparinga for a Willunga facelift with work scheduled to begin in 2016; we hold regular Business after Five promotional events at various local businesses; we are represented on the Willunga 175 committee; represented with other business and tourism associations on an Economic Development

Forum hosted by the city of Onkaparinga; have representation at our meetings by Onkaparinga councillors and local police through Business Watch; have a pivotal role to play in Stage 5 of the Tour Down Under; have a very good website and publish the excellent Willunga Gazette each month. There is plenty to get your teeth into. Currently we are considering ways to make our town more ‘bike friendly’ as part of our ‘tourism’ brief and we are following up a concern from one of our members in relation to the appalling Willunga signage on the Victor Harbor road approach to our town. The WBTA also acts as a conduit between the City of Onkaparinga and WBTA membership with the website acting as a distribution house for information from the council and its many subsidiary and associated groups. The commitee meets monthly in the Recreation Park office. Please give some consideration to not only becoming a member of the WBTA, but also to being a member of its committee. D.Greenslade Chair

rites of passage weekend For 20 years now, men and young guys have participated in rites of passage and initiation weekends taking place on Kangaroo Island. Many men, young men and fathers (many from the Willunga and Mt Barker Waldorf communities) have passed through these rites of passage and discovered a depth of self-knowledge of value in everyday life. The weekend is run by a not for profit, voluntary organization. This year it will be held on May 16, 17 and 18. An information night is held 4 - 8 weeks prior. Friends of Willunga Basin

FOWB is one of our community’s organizations which, like many others, busily works away in the background striving to make our wonderful local area even better. Since the late 1980’s, when the group started as a result of great community concern about the plan to cut through Sellicks Beach to create a marina the group has remained active. We changed our name to Friends of Willunga Basin (FOWB) once the marina idea was dropped, and

since then we have been working to protect the environment of Willunga Basin, in particular working on issues of planning and how that affects the local environment. The main objectives of FOWB are:

Protection of our local environment

Defending the region from urban sprawl and inappropriate development

Retaining and enhancing natural and heritage assets

Encourage sound planning, challenge poor planning decisions

Maintain agriculture as primary land use east of South Road

Planning for climate change and a low carbon future

Promoting sustainable agriculture & lifestyles

Having been very actively involved in working with State & Local Govern--ment, the wine industry and other community groups to get our fantastic Character Preservation Legislation in place, we are very keen to see that this legislation does effectively stop urban sprawl and that the worst of proposed developments in our area are challenged. FOWB are also active in creating new contributions to our area. At present we are developing two particular ideas. One for a hiking trail of over 100Km to circle the entire Willunga Basin – we have

been in discussions with Council for some years and our plans are definitely taking shape. Another project, in collaboration with the grape industry and other community groups, is to get Federal funding for clearance of weeds choking our waterways and replace them with the local species that should be there, thus greatly improving our district biodiversity. If you like the sound of what we do we would love you to join – our membership fee is only $8.00 and every additional member increases our clout when we do what we can to influence Council

or our State Government. Brochures with member-ship forms are available at the Willunga Environment Centre, or from our web site which you will find at www.fowb.net . Also feel free to contact secretary David Gill on 8556 2289.

Primitive Methodist Chapel, 27 High Street.

Built and opened in 1868 as a Primitive Methodist chapel – one of two in the district (the other was built on the corner of Strout and Binney Roads in 1858/59 and demolished in 1894). The foundation stone was laid in September 1867, followed

by the official opening in April 1868. The first minister was William Wiltshire, assisted by William Whitefield. Following its closure after Methodist Union in 1900, the Willunga chapel became a private home - the Herring family lived here in the 1920s. In the forties and fifties Bess Turner gave piano lessons while living here. Owner Bart Hailstone then leased the building to the Gill & Marler Veterinary Clinic in the early 1970s. The dilapidated building was bought by Stan Green who renovated and restored it over several years, finally opening Vanessa's Restaurant here in 1979. It was so named after Stan's daughter. The new stained glass windows came from the Pirie Street Methodist Church. Stan was previously a chef with the PO shipping line - he offered fine dining with silver service at Vanessa's for nearly 20 years before retiring. The premises were re-named Willy Hill Café in 2000. Then from 2007-2012 it became Christina's on High St - substantial renovations occurred during this time.

“Community Share” a new name “Willunga Community Share” is the new name for the weekly food (and other goods) swap that has been thriving since the Green Light Festival in November last year. Now situated in Willunga’s High Street adjacent to The Green Room, the Community Share operates from the new starting time of 9am till 12 noon every Saturday morning. The name change rides on the back of the successful inclusion of a clothing table at the food swap last Saturday. Scores of locals turned out in the glorious autumn weather to trim down and update their wardrobes. A number of

youngsters even collected some rare treasures for their fancy dress boxes. Due to popular demand, the clothing table will continue for the next two weeks (March 29 & April 5) to allow for those who weren’t able to be involved last week. Following this, Community Share will host their next clothing table on September 27. The name “Community Share” also more accurately represents what we do. There is no swapping. You gift your items to the table and you take what you want. There is no bartering. We also want to involve the whole community irrespective of whether you have a garden or not. If you have no garden produce, you can gift some preserves, craft items you have made or some cakes or biscuits to share. “Community Share” lends a hand Our name change to Community Share, reflects the evolving nature of our activities and in particular, our desire to support those who’s circumstances are such that they have nothing to gift to our tables. Surely these folks need our surplus food more than

anyone else. If your larder is sparse, filled with second grade specials, or cheap processed foods because that’s all you can afford, come and talk to us. Willunga is a giving community and we have great quality, fresh, chemical free surplus food that we want you to have. This also applies to items on other tables we host at different times eg clothing, CDs, DVD & books, furniture, garden resources and sporting equipment. “Community Share” needs volunteers Will Heidt and Jeff Simmons are looking for volunteers to relieve them on Saturday mornings. It has to be one of the most relaxed positions you can imagine. After the initial set up (which is always shared with someone else), it’s simply a matter of making everyone feel welcome and being able to explain what happens. You don’t even have to be there for the whole morning. Working in pairs there is always time you can go off and do your shopping or you can just sit back and chat to your friends. If you are interested, pop in and see us or drop us a line.

Food Garden Mentoring There are so many wonderful gardeners who contribute to our food table each week, and there are also some locals we talk to who want to be food gardening but don’t know where to start. Food Garden Mentoring involves linking up local gardeners with those wanting to start their first food garden. Mentors simply give a little advice when required. We are not looking for experts, just people who enjoy and are confident growing food in their own garden. If you have a productive herb, fruit and or vege garden and would like to encourage others, or you would like to have some guidance in this area, contact Jeff on [email protected]

Letter to the Editor Hi, I am forwarding this email to you as I am seeking assistance with an opportunity Willunga has to tell a history story on the SA Life program. The email below is from Grant Cameron who produces history stories for the SA Life program and in support of Willunga175 he is seeking a Willunga history story to tell on the

show. As he says he is looking for a story related to the lesser-known aspects of the town. From my rapid education I have received about Willunga over the past year I am sure we have several such stories to tell and I am seeking your assistance to try and identify them. A few spring to mind such as the Cheer-up Society, the beginning of the Almond Blossom Festival, the building of the stadium, the motor bike racing, the Willunga Show, the name behind the oval scoreboard but I know there are plenty more stories we could tell. So my plea is for you to dig deep into your memories and memorabilia and identify anything you think may be

of interest and contact me. Nothing will be considered silly as they may be the just the type of story Grant is looking for. I am seeking a timeline for this story from Grant and will let you know how long you have to think and search. Please feel free to pass this email onto anyone else who you believe may have a story we can tell. Thanking you in anticipation of your assistance. Regards, Graham Ormsby 0402 892 425 hi graham i do the history stories for both the sa life magazine and tv show and i'd love to do something on willunga in its 175th year.

your email address was handed on by the public relations company that works with fleurieu tourism, who suggested you'd be the man who may be able to help me out. my interest is not in the parts of willunga's story that are well documented- almonds and slate and the like - but on the less-known aspects of thetown's evolution. is there some part of the story that rarely gets told, or are there significant people who's role in the growth of willunga has been dusted over by time? i've covered the story on the railway that once linked willunga and the city, and also done a brief history of the town in a special we did on the fleurieu, but i'm sure there's plenty about the town that we could write about and film. any help you can provide - either in the way of information or people who may know those unusual and interesting stories - would be greatlyappreciated thanks grant cameron sa life

Branching out! New cellar door and restaurant to be built at Seppeltsfield in the Barossa. THE transformation of Seppeltsfield continues with owner Warren Randall announcing that construction of a new cellar door and restaurant is to start. Prominent McLaren Vale restaurant FINO will set up a new outlet in the refurbished 1900 bottling hall at Seppeltsfield, bringing another high end

dining experience to the Barossa. The renovations are the third major project carried out by Mr Randall, who bought Seppeltsfield in 2009. His first restoration was the 1888 gravity flow winery, completed in 2012. This was followed by the restoration of the 1850 stables which now house the Barossa arm of Adelaide art and design studio Jam Factory. “Along with cellar door and restaurant undertakings, the redevelopment works will also include substantial landscaping projects, including stone terracing, water features and palm tree transplantations,’’ Mr Randall said. “The landscaping will enable alfresco dining spaces for FINO @ Seppeltsfield as well as clear pedestrian connections from a welcome and information centre to cellar door and the JamFactory @ Seppeltsfield studios.

“The estate will also launch a new tasting room concept, inspired from South Africa, where individual ‘pods’ will enable separate tasting zones hosted by specialised wine educators.’’ The project was designed by architect Max Pritchard, who was also responsible for the Kangaroo Island Southern Ocean Lodge. The new cellar door and restaurant are expected to open at the end of October. From- CAMERON ENGLAND THE ADVERTISER MARCH 24, 2014

WALK FOR WHEELS On Sunday the 27th April at 10.00am – two locally based international charities are joining forces to host an awareness and fund raising walk. The walk begins at the Aldinga Arts Eco Village, 170 Port Road Aldinga. Participants may choose a 4.5k or 7km walk from the Village, along the beautiful Port Willunga Beach and returning to the Aldinga Arts Eco Village where food and drink will be available at a fund raising stall. The Community event is to raise awareness and funds in support of millions of people in developing countries unable to access an appropriate wheelchair. All money raised from the walk will support the work of Partners in Disability and Development (PDD) and Motivation Australia –

two locally based charities that work in partnership with local organisations in developing countries to increase opportunities for people with disabilities. Motivation Australia CEO Kylie Mines notes: “65 million people in the World need a wheelchair and 80% of these people live in developing countries where accessing a wheelchair is almost impossible”. The World Health Organisation recently published the first World Report on Disability – where the desperate need for all forms of assistive devices globally was highlighted. Motivation Australia and PDD believe that mobility is a human right and enables people to be included in their

community. Both organisations invite young and old to come and Walk for Wheels and help raise much needed funds for Motivation Australia and PDD. Prizes will be given to those participants who raise the most money. Registrations on line via: www.motivation.org.au Contact:

ERIC BOGLE CONCERT FOR APRIL 11th CANCELLED Eric’s backing guitarist Pete Titchener suffered a sporting (squash) injury (which may sound like an oxymoron – sporting injury, not backing guitarist – but it happened) to the extent that with a broken bone in each arm/wrist, Pete will be out of guitar action for some time. So the bad news is that the concert had to be

cancelled – the good news is that we may be able to re-schedule later in the year. In the meantime our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Pete. The upshot is that in preference to cancelling the evening out altogether I have approached HALFWAY TO FORTH who have agreed to come on board and play for us. So something to look forward to after all. Dave www.wirracreekmusic.com.au www.facebook.com/wirracreekmusic

------- Uniting Church April is our time of autumn colours, roses in full bloom, school holidays, hot cross buns freshly made, sultana grapes in the markets, apples crisp and juicy just harvested. Also the remembrance of our ANZAC’s and the celebration of Easter. This year, 2014, Christians from all traditions – Western and Orthodox - will celebrate Easter on the same day, the 20th of April. The date coincides when the full moon following the equinox comes so late that it counts as the first full moon after 21 March

in the Julian calendar as well as the Gregorian. This is not a regular occurrence, but it has happened more frequently in recent years - in 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2011. It will also take place in 2014 and 2017, but, after that, not again until 2034. The Easter Mystery This year, during Lent, Good Friday and Easter Day, Christians across the world will be moving through a time of remembering the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ at the same time. We will be held together in that unity as we mark these days in diverse ways and in various places. Willunga Uniting Church remembrances will include the following worship times. Maundy Thursday at 7.30pm Good Friday at 9.30am

Easter Day, including flowering of the cross at 10.30am. The Flowering of the Cross

The flowering of the cross is the placing of flowers on the bare and barren cross. This has come to be a special Easter tradition at Willunga Uniting. People are invited to bring a garden bloom; flowers will also be in baskets at the foot of the cross for visitors to use. Garden roses and greenery transforms what was empty and dead, into a symbol of life, colour and hope. Enquiries: 85562758.

From sapling to seed

Willunga is nestled amongst the wooded foothills of the Fleurieu.

This photographic exhibition examins our relationship with the trees in the areas, their lifecycle, the importance they play in our lives and the bonds we have with them.

In this 175th year of the community the growth of the area is depicted through compelling images of the full life cycle of these important characters of the community from sapling through growth into stalwarts dropping seed to begin the cycle again.
