$000’s damage bill as over 35 Willunga premises affected by faulty transformer by Tom Laing

On Saturday evening, as a full house at Willunga Show Hall enjoyed a “Life with Brian”, a number of Willunga premises experienced horrifying moments as a transformer fault in Moore Street sent power surging through their housing and business premises causing thousands of dollars worth of damage to appliances and fixtures.

With the terrifying sounds of loud bangs like fireworks, and horrific sights of lights unexpectedly flaring and dimming and smoke billowing from appliances, microwaves unexpectedly burst into life and died, DVD players sent forth dark clouds of smoke, televisions ended their reception, air conditioners closed down to never heat or cool again, ovens ceased their baking, hot plates gave up the ability to cook, refrigerators ceased cooling, extractor fans ceased pulling and NBN connected householders lost their phone and internet connections.

Late on Saturday evening and in the early hours of Sunday morning SAPower Network crews individually checked each affected household, eventually returning stable power a little after 1am.

Damage assessments and restoration of NBN connections and associated telephone connections continued into the week. Have you been affected? - Contact SA Power Networks on 131261 and ask for a claim form to be sent to you.

There is a new community radio station going to air on 91.1 FM in early October 2014 in the southern vales area.

Southern Vales Community Radio Inc (SVCR) which has received it community broadcast license from the Australian Community Media Authority (ACMA), is the governing body of Triple Z which is to be a community based radio station serving the Willunga Basin and surrounding districts including Mt Compass, Meadows and from Happy Valley across to Christies Beach in the north. A HOT TIME IN OLD WILLUNGA TOWN Recipe for a fabulous night out: Take one cavernous basketball stadium. Drape ceiling with nets and fairy lights. Add one stage, coloured spotlights and dance floor. Surround with tables covered in crisp white tablecloths, accompanied by burgundy-coloured linen napkins. Decorate each table with burgundy, pink and green helium-filled balloons. Invite nearly 170 people dressed in their glad rags. Supply them with delicious food and delectable local wines. Entertain them with quality musicians, dancers and one hot cabaret singer.

In collaboration with the local STARS (Southern Theatre and Arts Supporters) group, the Willunga175 committee has delivered another successful event to celebrate Willunga’s 175th anniversary. “As Chairman of the Willunga175 committee, I’ve received many positive comments about the evening,” said Graham Ormsby. “It was terrific to see how people really got into the spirit of things, enjoying the cultural and gourmet aspects of Willunga. Chef Todd Steele and his team provided a wonderful meal, which was complemented by wines provided by Leconfield Wines, Minko Wines, Fox Creek Wines and Willunga100 Wines. I’d especially like to thank my committee, STARS members, and the local residents who turned up to help us prepare for the event and to clean up afterwards. I’ve found the overall support from the wider community most gratifying.”

Built to inspire!

On Friday 13 June 2014 Willunga Waldorf School officially opened the new year 6 & 7 building.

This capital works project has been funded by the Australian Government and The Hon Jamie Briggs MP officiated at the opening ceremony.

The building design conveys some of the character belonging to the Waldorf/Steiner curriculum content. Class 6 has a focus on Ancient Rome and the establish-ment of Law as the foundation for civil society. This follows the birth of Democracy and the retreat of the Gods in Ancient Greece (Class 5). Class 7 moves on to the Middle Ages culminating in the Renaissance.

With stylised rammed earth pillars and deep steps for sitting and standing, the outdoor eating and socialising area loosely reflects the architecture of an ancient Roman forum. Historically a gathering place of social significance and often the scene of diverse activities including political discussions and meetings, the space may well inspire the students to partake in some hearty oratory.

Class 7 students had this to say about their new space:

“The outside seating arrangements are good for socialising” – Liam Miller “The beautiful open space brings you closer to nature” – Lia Petagna “The outside seating and columns reminds me of a

colosseum” – Grace Hartley “The rooms are light and airy” – Kiara Irvine

Janet Molloy, Principal, says: “I warmly invite all members of the public to join us for the opening of this beautiful new building. Willunga Waldorf School is leading the way with architectural design in schools. We continue to challenge ourselves to create aesthetically beautiful spaces within which children will feel inspired to learn.

Future School Tours: Wed 30 July, 9.30am and Wed 27 August, 4.30pm. Members of the public are very welcome.

Willunga. As this year is the celebration of Willunga’s 175th birthday the knowledge gained will prove invaluable next term as we celebrate as a school this significant community milestone. Being one of the oldest towns in South Australia Willunga has special significance in South Australia’s history and as a community it is important that this history is recorded, retained and celebrated. During the day, staff were shown the locally produced online Wikipedia titled “Willunga Now and Then” willunga.nowandthen.net.au/. I urge everyone to take a few minutes to explore this website and find out more about our town and its place in South Australian history. Anyone can submit articles / photos to this website to enhance and develop and retain the history of Willunga.

Further on in the day the staff visited the Bassett School House, Old Court House, Jail and Slate Museum. Many staff (some being local residents too) were surprised to know what wonderful historical resources were on our doorstep.

Another part of the day was spent trialing the new Willunga Walks APP to determine its suitability for school and student use. Again I urge everyone to download this APP and undertake this heritage walk either up or down High Street. It comes with photographs, documented descriptions and voice over of many of the historical sites at our fingertips in Willunga.

I must acknowledge the wonderful work and dedication undertaken by the volunteers of our National Trust and staff of

Museums SA to develop these resources. Through their enthusiasm the history of Willunga will be recorded and enjoyed by others for many years to come.

It certainly was a historic staff training day as the National Trust members of Willunga and staff from Museums SA joined us and led most of the training. Some National Trust members from Gawler even attended as they were keen to find out about what was happening in Willunga. I believe this was most probably a first for a public school, to undertake training with its local community members. If anyone wants to find out more about the National Trust of Willunga and its offerings information can be sourced at the following addresses.

Plastic Free July

“Plastic Free July” got off to a flying start at Willunga Environment Centre at a well attended showing of the movie ”Bag-It”, a graphic, very moving and personalised account of the harm done to our environment and ourselves by our contemporary reliance on plastic with little thought of alternatives or the harm caused by the exponential growth of its production, throw away

and non degradable nature. It puts it right up there with climate change as a major threat to the planet. Janine is able to loan you the movie throughout July so if you were unable to see it on Monday you haven’t missed out. You can get involved in Plastic Free July by pledging to go plastic free for 1 day, 1 week or the whole month of July! Register as an individual, family, business/organisation or school. For more details and to register: www.plasticfreejuly.org The beach clean up is an event for the groups aligned to the Environment Centre. Would you please contact me at [email protected] to let me know if you are thinking of attending the beach clean up in order to organise refreshments that can be

used as a fundraiser for the Environment Centre YACCA youth group, the next generation of guardians of our marine environment and our planet. Hope to hear from you and to see you at Port Willunga Beach on July 20th Patricia Ninnes Sustainable Communities McLaren vale

GET READY TO HIT THE HILL! Have you watched in awe as the Tour Down Under cyclists power up our famous Old Willunga Hill? Willunga 100 Wines Hit the Hill is the premier event of the Willunga175 celebrations and will allow cyclists of all standards to test their own hill-climbing skills. You will have the opportunity to challenge yourself in a hill-climb time trial and to compete for the inaugural ‘Hit the Hill’ crown, so now is the time to start your fitness regime. This exciting event will be held on Sunday 7 September, so save the date! Whether you are a competitor or a spectator, it’s going to be a fun day.

Take the uphill challenge

Old Willunga Hill Road will be closed for the duration of the time trials, so you can ride in safety. The 3 km bike hill climb will begin in front of the Old Bush Inn on High Street, featuring a starting gate based on that used in the Tour de France. “We’ve decided to adopt the Tour Down Under "King of the Mountain" finish line at the top of the hill, approximately

50 metres before the turn-off onto Range Road,” said Willunga175 Chairman, Graham Ormsby. “Riders of all ages and abilities are invited to ‘have a go’ at the hill, and everyone who reaches the finish line will be awarded a certificate of achievement. We will also crown a ‘Hit the Hill’ hero for each of the various age groups.”

To enter If you are interested in entering for the hill climb, please complete the online expression of interest form available on the Willunga175 website www.willunga.com/175, or contact race organiser Graham Ormsby on 0402 892 425 or email [email protected] . This will ensure your place in the starting line-up when entry forms become available early in July. Details on how to enter will then be posted on the website and also Cycling SA’s site www.sa.cycling.org.au

Ride a Billycart down High Street

Those who prefer something less physically challenging can register to compete in a revival of the historic billycart

derby on Willunga's High Street, which was a regular feature in past years. The Willunga Business and Tourism Association and former members of the Willunga Apex Club will oversee this activity. Derby organisers will supply the billycarts, built to original specifications, so that no one rider has an advantage over others. Travelling down High Street from a starting point near the Golden Fleece coffee shop, the billycarts will cross the finish line in front of the Post Office. Only people aged 14 years or older may take part in the billycart races, due to insurance restrictions. If you are interested in participating in the billycart derby, check the Willunga Gazette each month or monitor the Willunga175 website where details of how you can be involved will be announced soon.

Wind down and relax

The day will be capped off with a wine and food event featuring local produce, where all participants and spectators can relax after a day of fun and achievement.

Know your Willunga

Sadly Peter Dawson the famous singer did not live in Willunga as a child (see June Gazette, page 12), although this has been claimed many times in the past.

Peter Smith Dawson was born in Adelaide in 1882 nearly 10 years after his parents left Willunga.

Peter’s parents Thomas and Alison Dawson and two young children had lived at 18 Main Road in Willunga for several years when Thomas was manager of the flax mill next door. A daughter (Agnes) and son (Thomas Jnr) were born at Willunga in 1872 and 1873. The family then moved to Adelaide where Thomas owned an iron-working business.

Thomas and Alison Dawson had ten children in the fifteen years after their marriage in1867. Peter Dawson was their ninth child.

“DIVERSITY” BY SHEP

A selection of landscapes, seascapes and contemporary work by Neil Sheppard AKA Shep Fox Creek Cellar Door Gallery | May 28 – July 31, 2014

Shep’s work encompasses a wide range of styles and subjects from impressionist landscapes, seascapes, naive, abstract and contemporary. He loves to use lots of bold colour to create soft, moody and organic atmosphere through his pieces.

Neil Sheppard (alias Shep) was born in the UK in 1956, and migrated to Australia as a child with his parents and grew up in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Shep worked as a teacher for over 20 years, then 4WD Driver / Tour Guide on Kangaroo Island, but now enjoys life as a full time artist. From an early age Shep always enjoyed drawing, and started his art career working in pen and ink, often featuring rustic rural scenes and historic buildings. Willunga Football Club Creek Easy Winners Under Harsh Conditions Langhorne Creek won the toss and kicked with a 3 or 4 goal wind. West kicked an easy goal 5 minutes in after a mis-kick from the Willunga fullback. Mattner kicked another gimme goal two minutes later when he was awarded a holding free 50 metres ahead of the play. A Perrey tackle was rewarded

one minute later. His well weighted kick found the strong leading Hateley who kicked truly. Willunga’s mid-field and defence tightened up and held Langhorne Creek’s forwards at bay for the next ten minutes until a poor Willunga a hand pass gifted the ball to a hard running Kellock who delivered to Konitzka. He did not let his team down and sent the Creeks into quarter time with a four goal lead. Three minutes into the second quarter Sherry snapped a left foot goal to get Willunga onto the scoreboard. Langhorne Creek then battled hard to deny Willunga back-to-back goals. Their disciplined effort paid dividends when Kellock kicked long to Mattner who kicked his second and the first for either team into the wind. Groom, who had been hard at it for Willunga since the first bounce, was rewarded when his quick kick rolled across the line. Standfield and Keeley had a competitive battle in ruck. Standfield also had many damaging touches in field play. He kicked a fine goal while resting in the forward lines after a diving mark in the pocket. Burdett and Collier were instrumental at driving the ball forward to give Willunga a sniff at half time. Willunga’s second halves have been a problem all season.

Players were prepared to tackle the issue but the Creeks were determined to win the Premiership Quarter which they did comfortably. They kicked 4 goals with the wind and held Willunga goalless. Glass and Alexopoulos battled their hearts out to stem the Creek’s forward momentum but at times the dam burst. West kicked a long goal from the fifty metre line then strong forward line tackle allowed Perrey to run into an open goal. Derham intercepted numerous Willunga forward movements then combined with Ryan and Tonkin to drive the ball goalward. Mattner set up a Cleggett goal. Huizink’s desperation deep in the Demons backlines prevented two Langhorne Creek goals. Warren eventually broke free to drive a goal through and give his team a commanding lead going into the last quarter. Sherry kicked one for the Demons at the four minute mark but Langhorne immediately answered the challenge from the centre bounce. Consecutive free kicks gave Hateley the opportunity to convert. He kicked truly. A stalemate

ensued for nearly 10 minutes before Alexopoulos kicked a long goal with the breeze after a 50 metre penalty. Warren, Lyon and Dominish set the Creeks. The team goal of the day resulted. Butler kicked it from deep in the pocket having run from the wing and been involved in a series of kicks and handballs. Just before the final siren sounded the Creeks ut a final nail in the coffin when Dominish won a free kick and screwed a long kick into the wind where Mattner marked in a pack and split the middle.

Church Notices Willunga Uniting Church – Children’s Art exhibition and Annual Spring Fair September 5-6

One excellent way to get through the long nights of winter is to look forward to the season of Spring and the renewal of life energy everywhere. The students from the Willunga Waldorf School are working together towards the season of Spring, through their creative art, to celebrate themes of

environment, community,

Archie Sharp Pastel Ghost Gum

inter-connectedness, and new life. This is a joint community project of the Waldorf School and the Willunga Uniting Church, seeking ways to dialogue, through creative expression, our common values. An exhibition of the students’ work will be exhibited at Bethany Hall, and throughout the church complex from 5 September, followed by our Spring Fair on Saturday 6 September.

This is an annual project of the Willunga Uniting Church, making its gallery space open to local schools each year in September for student art.

Rebecca Hicks, the Art teacher from the Waldorf School describes it like this: “Our curriculum strives to awaken social responsibility and service to the community and much of what we do as a matter of course seems to comfortably align with the messages within Psalms 104 and 138. From Kindergarten onward, an intrinsic love of nature is combined with a hands-on approach, followed in later years by a scientifically based understanding of natural processes and active care for the environment. At every level, students learn to live in partnership and cooperation with the natural world and her

cycles, planting gardens, caring for animals, and learning lessons for meeting and taking responsibility for the ecological challenges of the future.

“We value soul moods through which learning unfolds: wonder, awe, devotion, gratitude, compassion and trust. The ability to recognise beauty, to discriminate between right and wrong, to carry out a chosen course of action, are the qualities consciously cultivated in the school.

Art is a 'humaniser'….it strengthens not only our sense of self, but a sense of community. The arts are integrated into all aspects of our curriculum, and extending the arts into the wider community through this exhibition at Willunga Uniting Church is a wonderful opportunity and privilege to make and strengthen connections with each other.

Artwork from all year levels will be represented, however the high school Art Elective students are working specifically on individual and collaborative projects in response to Psalms 104 and 138. We have engaged in conversations around environmental stewardship, social responsibility, what is at the core of environmental and social sustainability and pondered questions around what is needed to live in a compassionate world.”

The Waldorf School Exhibition will be hosted by the Willunga Uniting Church during the month of September, with a launch date of Friday the fifth.

The Annual Spring Fair occurs the next day also at Bethany Hall and the

adjacent Bell Paddock, home of the historic Bell Tree. There will be a variety of food and craft stalls, live plant sales, performances of music composed by the Waldorf students, children’s games and activities, and much more.
