Summer Yard Of The MonthWe are excited and anxious to see what homeowners can

show us with some beautiful landscapes. We will be judging yards around the last days of May, June and July, so let’s all get dirty. We are looking for colors, textures, manicured lawns and gardens. We hope everyone will take pride in their landscapes so we all can benefit from an increase in value in our neighborhood.

ARMED FORCES DAYMay 18

In the United States, “Armed Forces Day” is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. In 2013 it will be on May 18. The day was created in 1949, and was a result of the consolidation of the military services in the Department of Defense. It was intended to replace the separate Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Days, but observance of these days, especially within each particular service, continues to this day.

The purpose of Armed Forces Day is to honor Americans serving in the five services - the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

MEMORIAL DAYMay 27

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May, which is May 27 in 2013. It was formally known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season. It is traditional to fly the flag of the United States at half mast from dawn until noon. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

How to Keep the Park Clean While Enjoying ItBy James Deitiker, Social Events Chairperson

This is not a message to those who carelessly throw trash in our parks. Instead, it is a message to those who have civic pride and want to do a little extra for the community. Take a small plastic bag and latex gloves with you when visiting our park for use in collecting paper and plastic. Your effort will add to the overall exercise value of your outing, inspire the young people who witness your civic pride and will make our park better.
