WARD 4 COUNCILLOR REPORT
Councillor Newsletter, October 2018 I woke up to snow falling this morning. It looks like an early
winter. 😊 Mayor Scott and a number of Councillors including myself attended meetings in Edmonton this last month and met with Minister Mason, Minister Anderson and Minister Jansen. Our discussions included funding for the disaster relief program, terminating the master land agreement with the province, the East Clearwater highway, service roads, highway 69, the winter road to Fort Chipewyan and better signage to the airport. I also brought up the lack of or poor connectivity (high speed internet) in some of the rural hamlets. At the spring session of the AAMDC conference, there was an announcement that funds would be released to increase the connectivity in rural hamlets.
A rural coalition meeting was held this last month. I had gathered up concerns from some of the different community boards in Ward 4. We had a good discussion with municipal staff, some Council representatives and members of the rural coalition. It has been decided that potentially a Council meeting will be held in Anzac. Items will include the Anzac Community Hall. Moving forward there are plans also to have a ribbon cutting for both the Conklin multi-plex and the Anzac fire hall in the very near future. I attended the Alberta Care conference in September in Fort McMurray. It was quite informative. Topics included, carbon credits, recycling, waste management, Fire smart, wildfire recovery, oil sands reclamation and scrap tire processing. I also gave a tour of some of the areas in Fort McMurray. Members of the tour included Council representatives from other areas of Alberta. Members of Council also met with representatives from the Catholic School Board, Public School Board and Northlands School Board. We shared information and a path moving forward. We also met with the representatives from Keyano College and discussed their upcoming initiatives which included post secondary education.
I wanted to ensure that the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo rural hamlets had an opportunity for some of this funding. I also lobbied to the Minister of Transportation for improvements to highway 881, specifically driving onto and away from the bridges between Gregoire Lake Estates and Conklin and potholes on portions of highway 63.

I also had the pleasure of being invited to tour the Brighter Beginnings Academy on #468
First Nation. Future plans are to have a licensed daycare. The picture below is taken at Brighter Beginnings Academy which is part of the Aboriginal Head Start childhood development program.
For any good deeds or concerns please e-mail [email protected] or telephone 780-799-6024.

A new online tool, the RCMP Crime Map enables us to share up-to-date information on criminal incidents with members of the communities we serve across the municipality. The crime map is a targeted, evidence-based approach to informing residents about five crime types:
• Break and enters
• Stolen vehicles
• Missing persons
• Theft from motor vehicles
• Mischief
Neighbourhood crime isn’t just about numbers; it’s about knowing where crime is happening in our region. This new tool gives residents an opportunity to be an extra set of eyes and ears for the Wood Buffalo RCMP in the communities we serve. By providing the public with tools like the map and crime prevention resources, we can work together to build a safer region. Review the RCMP Crime Map at woodbuffalorcmp.ca.

Quotations of the month
Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to honest man it comes
as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow, which may mean every day, or at least once in seven days.
- Edward Sandford Martin
Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you
concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.
Oprah Winfrey
