COUNCILLOR REPORT FOR JANUARY 2015

December was a busy month as Mayor and Council needed to focus on the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Capital and Operating Budget for 2015. We had extra meetings in December and both budgets were passed. Some of the capital projects in Ward 4 include upgrades to the Anzac Community hall, lights for the sidewalks in Janvier and Conklin, and upgraded services for high speed internet in Gregoire Lake Estates. It was wonderful and I was so thankful to see the overwhelming support for the Conklin Multi-plex from the residents of Conklin, Janvier, Fort McKay, Anzac and Fort McMurray. Letters of support were also received from local non-profit groups, industry, local businesses our college and provincial representative. A letter of support was also written to the Fort McMurray Today from Metis Local Organizations within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Conklin was very well represented at City Hall when the capital budget was passed. I personally thank all the residents who came in on the bus and drove in and waited for hours for the chance to listen and present to Mayor and Council in support of the Conklin multi-plex. The presentations were very thoughtful and insightful. I attended the Christmas Community Dinner in Anzac. It was well attended with a great meal and door prizes. There were gifts for all the young children and a visit from Santa. Minister Scott and Councillor Cardinal also attended the event. February 5, 2015 has been the date set for the engagement with Mayor and Council. The engagement will be in Anzac. There will be advertisements as to the time and place. The engagement will be open to all residents in Anzac and Gregoire Lake Estates. Potential plans are to have a sit down dinner. Please stay tuned for more information. For any good deeds or concerns please telephone 780-334-0516 or e-mail [email protected]

From the WLCA board We wish one and all a Happy New Year. 2014 has been a busy year for our board, some of the key objectives we worked on this year with our local Councillor and RMWB were the water and sewer servicing in our communities and seeing the commitment from our governing body RMWB to bring it to fruition. We have completed our new board structure and bylaws, along with a budget allowing us the funding for training board members as well as networking with other communities facing similar issues and work together in finding solutions. WLCA and the FCSS have joined to become a stronger voice for the community. Our 2014 elections brought us a very committed and visionary mix. These individuals give up their family time to work on projects essential to our community and we look forward to working with you in 2015. The WLCA holds a monthly open meeting in the Rec. Centre 6:30 pm. the second Monday of each month. The next meeting will be January 12, 2015

-Darryl Woytkiw, President Willow Lake Community Association

On behalf of the Anzac FCSS and the Community, we would like to send out our appreciation to the following sponsors of our Annual

Community Christmas Dinner.

Your donations and support are greatly appreciated!

AFCSS On behalf of the AFCSS, we would like to take this moment to thank everyone in the community for a great year. The FCSS board has been very busy this year. We are trying different programs to see what works for our community. We have had some wins and some failures. This past year we also had help from two summer students from Nexen. They did programming for the youth and elders. They did a fantastic job. The luncheons and bingos for the elders were great success and continue to be so. The Anzac Daze Treasure Hunt and BBQ were also great successes, not only for the Board but for the Community. In the month of October, we hired Megan. She is to work with the Tiny Tots, Recreation Board and AFCSS. She has been a great contribution to the boards and Community. We as a board hope to keep improving and growing in our Community in the years to come! We wish everyone a Happy New Year!

SENIORS’ CORNER

CHEQUE OVERPAYMENT FRAUD Fraudulent cheques are used in a variety of scams such as advance fee letter fraud, overpayment and prize pitch to name a few. Overpayment scams is the type of fraud where the person receiving the cheque is actually owed money for goods sold. The seller receives a counterfeit cashier's cheque personal cheque or corporate cheque from the “purchaser” in an amount in excess of the amount owed; is asked to deposit the cheque and wire the excess funds immediately back to the sender/purchaser or the purchaser's agent or shipper; and, the deposited cashier's cheque is subsequently returned as counterfeit and charged back to the seller's account. Anyone selling goods should be suspicious of any cheque, especially if it is for more than the agreed selling price. Consider an alternative method of payment, such as an escrow service or online payment service. Talk to your bank about the safest way to receive funds from overseas. To protect yourself against this sort of scam, never agree to a deal in which the payer wishes to issue an amount for more than the agreed price and expects you to reimburse the balance. The scammers use a variety of excuses to explain the overpayment, but any such excuse should be treated with the utmost suspicion. In order to avoid overpayment scams, remember the following general words of advice:

Know who you are dealing with; independently confirm your buyer's name, street address, and telephone number;

Never accept a cheque for more than your selling price; Never agree to wire back funds to a buyer. A legitimate buyer will not pressure you

to do so, and you have limited recourse if there is a problem with a wire transfer; Resist pressure to “act now.” If the buyer's offer is good now, it should be good

when the cheque clears; if you accept payment by cheque, ask for a cheque drawn on a local bank or a bank with a local branch. You can visit that bank branch to determine if the cheque is legitimate; if the buyer wants to use a service you have not heard of, be sure to check it out to ensure it is reliable. Check its Web site, call its customer service hotline, and read its terms of agreement and privacy policy. If you do not feel comfortable with the service, do not use it.
