Medical Device Industry - MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA (MENA)

• Total medical devices sales amounted to USD 7,518.05 million in 2016

• MENA is the second least attractive region in the world in which to commercialize a medical device

• Despite its slowdown, Saudi Arabia will continue to lead the GCC market, while Iran will spearhead the

non-GCC market

• The UAE will remain a predominant base for multinational medical device companies to set up regional

subsidiaries or headquarters

• Economic improvement from 2018 onwards will benefit the MENA medical device market.

o GCC will be driven by economic growth and ongoing healthcare developments.

o The outlook for non-GCC will be mixed, with Iran to be the outperformer and Iraq to benefit from a

gradual removal of Islamic State.

Market Outlook

Medical Devices Industry

The European market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.85% for the 2017 to

2021 period, supported by good economic performance in the eurozone and

emerging Europe

Europe will be the slowest growing region in the global medical device market.

Due to local currency weakness, market growth will be lower in the US dollar

terms.

The MENA market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.37% for the 2017 to 2021 period,

but market growth is expected to be limited by lower import growth in light of

macroeconomic imbalances derived from lower oil prices, particularly in GCC markets.

Despite its slowdown, Saudi Arabia will continue to lead the GCC market, while Iran will

spearhead the non-GCC market.

The UAE is expected to remain a predominant base for multinational medical device

companies to set up regional subsidiaries or headquarters.

The Sub Saharan market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.66% for the

2017 to 2021 period, after witnessing a weak performance in previous years

because of exchange rate fluctuations and a poor economic environment for

most countries, including South Africa which dominates the market.

The medical devices market is expected to remain reliant on imports and

international aid and funding, therefore multinationals would continue to

strengthen their presence.
