HISTORY OF THE WILLIS MUSIC COMPANY

Celebrating 120 years of Willis MusicSince 1899, Willis Piano Music has started millions of pianists on their musical journey. Founded in Cincinnati by Charles H. Willis, this family-run company has always had music education at its heart. Willis is a major instrument dealer and retailer in the USA, and also the publisher of some of the world’s most recognisable and most-used piano methods and repertoire.

Following a series of ownership changes, John J. Cranley became general manager in 1923, and later came to own the company; the Cranley family still own and run the business. Under Cranley’s leadership, Willis Music became the premier publisher of teaching methods, adding John Thompson’s Modern Course for the Piano to the catalogue in 1936, which remains one of the most popular piano methods in the world. Son Edward Cranley became president of the company in 1965, and in 1990, Kevin Cranley succeeded his father Edward as president of the Willis Music Company.

The Willis catalogue includes the work of some of the world’s most respected piano pedagogists including William Gillock, John Thompson and Edna Mae Burnam.

William Gillock (1917–1993) – dubbed the ‘Schubert’ of children’s composers – was a prolific writer, creating a number of significant series including Accent On… and his New Orleans Jazz Styles. His beautiful pieces, including favourites such as ‘Fountain in the Rain’ are frequently set on exam syllabuses, and are perfect for recitals, competitions and for playing for sheer enjoyment.

John Thompson (1889–1963) – a renowned concert pianist – published his Modern Course in 1936, and Teaching Little Fingers To Play a year later. His Easiest Course followed in 1954. The concepts at the core of these courses – teacher/student duet performances, the combination of ‘Rote and Note’, ‘Something new in every lesson’ and a general ethos of aiming to let the student ‘think and feel musically’ – have been trusted by teachers around the world as the best way to start young musicians playing the piano. The Thompson methods offer clear progression and attractive original compositions to nurture a combination of technical and musical growth.

Edna Mae Burnam’s A Dozen A Day – with its iconic ‘stick figure’ illustrations – has been used in countless piano lessons as an endlessly flexible pre-practice resource. Burnam (1907–2007) recognised that pianists need to warm up before playing, and her innovative exercises provide a fun, engaging variation on conventional scale and arpeggio drills.

Willis Music continues to bloom, with new repertoire and pedagogy provided by some of today’s leading educational composers including Glenda Austin, Eric Baumgartner, Randall Hartsell, Naoko Ikeda, Carolyn Miller, Carolyn C. Setliff, Wendy Stevens and Jason Sifford.

Part Two

As new notes are introduced in Part Two, the student is given plenty of opportunity to practise them with each hand separately. Most examples are preceded by short finger drills to support five-finger position and towards the end of the book, simple two- and three-note chords are introduced.

Part Three

Part Three of this easy and fun approach to learning the piano begins by showing the importance of playing and listening to music phrase by phrase rather than note by note. Examples of touch follow in proper sequence.


Part Four

The primary purpose of Part Four is to allow the pupil to develop efficiency and fluency in the application of knowledge gained in the earlier books. Several new keys are introduced, leger lines are presented, the dotted crotchet is explained, and simple use of the pedal.


Part Five

Part Five introduces several new theory and practical elements, from the use of semiquavers in all time signatures to legato pedalling, but the overriding concern throughout is encouraging the student to play more advanced material as musically as possible.

RHYtHM AnD AccentsRhythm has been called the ‘soul’ of music. Rhythmical ‘swing’ gives life to any composition. The first step in setting the

rhythm is by means of the accent. An accent is a special emphasis placed upon one of the beats in a bar. ‘Runaway River’ is

written in T time, which means that each crotchet lasts for one count, and there are three counts to a bar.

Always accent the first beat of each bar in T time. COUNT: | one two three | one two three | etc.

tHe tIeThe tie is a curved line joining one note to another of the same pitch, and means that the second note is to be held for its full value without being struck.

John Thompson’s Adult Piano Course

The Adult Piano Course introduces the pupil to the notes of the piano, the fundamentals of notation, different types of notes and varying rhythms, while also ensuring that sight-reading is introduced from the very beginning. From there, the student is taken through intervals, chords, phrasing and beginning scales, all interspersed with enjoyable and melodic practice pieces that put the theoretical concepts into a musical context.

Throughout this adult piano tutor, there is a great balance between developing musical knowledge and practical musical skills.
