Course DescriptionIn the 26 years following the recognition of AIDS and the subsequent realization of a HIV pandemic, there have been milestones in the evolution of effective care. The introduction of the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and the protease inhibitors heralded a new era, effectively treating HIV infection and preventing the development of AIDS. Data emerged showing that effective treatment of HIV positive pregnant women resulted in very low transmission of HIV infection to their children. Most recently, new antiretrovirals and new formulations of antiretrovirals have offered patients the opportunity of controlling their virus while taking only a few pills a day. Although treatment associated toxicities still prove to be a challenge for clinicians and patients alike, new strategies hold out promise. We are now at a point where another, equally significant, advance in care is about to take place. New classes of antiretrovirals and new technology will expand our ability to aggressively treat patients with even the most resistant strains of HIV. This Symposium addresses this explosion of information in a way that allows clinicians to bring useful information back to the patient. Joe Eron will address the latest data on integrase inhibitors and how they might fit into the current strategies. Eoin Coakley will discuss CCR5 tropism and the agents directed at co-receptors. Richard Haubrich will discuss some of the data on the latest protease inhibitors and Todd Hulgan will review the latest data on toxicities associated with NRTI. John Zic will round out the day with a presentation of dermatologic manifestations of HIV disease.

program objectives Upon completion of the Symposium, participants will be able to:1) discuss integrase inhibitors and state how they will use them with other antiretroviral

therapies.2) describe CCR5 tropism and the agents directed at co-receptors.3) review the latest data on treatment-related toxicities, particularly those associated

with NRTIs.4) identify and contrast the latest data on protease inhibitors.5) name three dermatological manifestations of HIV disease and how to treat them.6) examine what’s new in women’s HIV care

Target AudienceThe content of this Symposium will be invaluable for any healthcare provider seeking a comprehensive update in HIV/AIDS care. The program is designed for Physicians, Advanced Practice Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Nurses, Oral Health Providers, Pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals interested in clinical HIV/AIDS topics.

CreditThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for CME (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Vanderbilt Meharry Center for AIDS Research, Vanderbilt AIDS Clinical Trial Center and Vanderbilt Division of Infectious Diseases.
