Sinceramente, Peyton Belunek, PresidentaWilliamsburg Hamlet • 281-347-2658

RECIPEGinGerbread Men

Fun to make, fun to eat - an all around fabulous holiday treat! Gingerbread men are a memorable and wonderful childhood delicacy! Below is a simple base recipe for the gingerbread men - the decorating is up to you!

Prep: 25 minutesCook: 12 minutesReady In: 1 hour, 37 minutesMakes about 2 1/2 dozen

Ingredients1 (3.5 ounce) package cook and serve butterscotch pudding mix1/2 cup butter1/2 cup packed brown sugar1 egg1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour1/2 teaspoon baking soda1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

DirectionsIn a medium bowl, cream together the dry butterscotch pudding mix, butter and brown sugar until smooth. Stir in the egg. Combine the flour, baking soda, ginger and cinnamon; stir into the pudding mixture. Cover and chill dough until firm, about 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease baking sheets. On a floured board, roll dough out to about 1/8 inch thickness and cut into man shapes using a cookie cutter. Place cookies 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven, until cookies are golden at the edges. Cool on wire racks. Recipe from allrecipes.com

DECEmbER GaRDEnInG TIPs• Group your container plants together when a freeze is in the forecast and use cloth rather than plastic to cover them. Remove the cover once temperatures rise.• Be sure not to over water your dormant plants. • Try adding primroses to your garden for extra color. Obconica and German primroses are perennial varieties, which will come back year after year.• Plant tulips on or around New Year’s Day - they look lovely with pansies!

PlEasE sPay oR nEuTER youR PETYour pet is a cherished member of your family. As their caregiver, you have a very real responsibility to their health and well-being. One of the most important decisions you will make in their care is to have your pet spayed or neutered. By having your female pet spayed before their first heat, you help prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which are fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Having your male pet neutered can help prevent testicular cancer and control unwanted litters.

Female cats usually go into heat for four to five days every three weeks during breeding season, making a lot of noise and urinating often (sometimes in your house!) in an attempt to attract a mate. This will be entirely relieved by spaying your female cat. Unneutered males will roam far from home, risking life and limb in the streets and in fights with other males in the pursuit of a mate. Neutering your male cat is a way of protecting him from the dangers of roaming and fighting in the streets.

Spaying or neutering your pet is a great cost savings. The cost of spaying or neutering your pet is much less than caring for a new litter and there are programs that can aid in the cost of the procedure for

low-income families. The cost of the procedure is also considerably less than the medical care for your pet following an accident when your unneutered male escapes or gets into an altercation in the street.

Many people feel that if their pet has a litter it will be a good life lesson for their children to learn about “the miracle of birth.” Your responsible pet ownership is a great lesson to your child! Many unwanted pets end up in shelters every year. Allowing your pet to have offspring you never intended to keep is not the lesson you want to teach. Please consider the large number of educational books and videos about birth, which can fill this need for your children responsibly.

Spaying and neutering is a great benefit to your community! When streets are overcrowded with stray animals, driving or going for a walk or bike ride can become dangerous - for both people and animals.

Please think about the large number of unwanted animals in our country when you are considering spaying or neutering your pet. Every year, millions of domesticated animals will be euthanized for lack of homes and even more will end up living on the streets. Please be a part of the solution and call to set up an appointment to have your pet spayed or neutered today, if you have not already done so!

DeeD RestRictionsPlease take some time to take an assessment of the exterior of your home. A fresh coat of paint is a solid investment in preserving your home. Approved colors for the Hamlet are earth tones. Please submit an architectural review for your chose color and consider this important home maintenance responsibility. If you have replaced your siding and have yet to paint, please do so. Tending to your landscaping can boost your curb appeal, as well as save you greatly in home repair in the long run. Overgrown plants near your home can conceal insect infestation and damage your foundation and home exterior. Now is a good time to take inventory and prune your plants. Avoid planting close to your home.

The board asks that those of you who have received letters from the management company comply with the requests to abide by the community’s deed restrictions. When you purchased a home in this

community, you chose to participate in our rules and regulations. We all want a beautiful Hamlet and every home makes a difference! If you are having difficulty complying with the request, please contact the management company and explain your situation. Communication is the first step toward understanding!

ARchitectuRAl ReviewA new Architectural Review Application is available. This year, there have been some changes in the Texas State laws and our policies have evolved to reflect those changes. The new laws allow for solar energy devices, the display of U.S., Texas and U.S. armed forces flags and rainwater harvesting systems, as well as certain types of shingles. All of these additions to your home would require an architectural review and are only allowed in certain places on your home/lot. The policy changes will be available on the new website www.katyhamlet.org. To avoid penalties, please complete the approval form before you begin any change or addition to your home, which will affect the exterior appearance of your property. Martin Courville is the board contact for architectural reviews; so if you have any questions regarding the approval process or if an application is needed, please contact him at 281-343-6881, [email protected] or contact Lisa Henkhaus at PMG at 713-329-7100. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

Pet owneRshiP ResPonsibilityPets are valued and loved members of the Hamlet community! If you love your pets, please keep them inside your home or your enclosed yard! Your neighbors cannot be responsible for your loved pets and they are not safe outside of your home or yard. All pets in the Hamlet must be licensed, vaccinated and wear proper identifying tags. If your fence is in need of repair, please take time to repair it. A bored pet will find its way into the streets and cannot be kept safe once it is out of your yard.

If you encounter loose dogs or cats in the neighborhood, you may call Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services at the following number: 281-999-3191. You may also call this number if you have stray or abandoned animals on your property.

Thank you for caring about your pets, your neighbors and your neighborhood!

RepoRt IncIdentsPlease help keep the Hamlet safe and nuisance free by reporting incidents when you notice them. Speeding vehicles, suspicious persons or vehicles and annoying sounds (car alarms that do not get turned off by their owner at any time of day or dogs barking and loud music after 10 PM) are all examples of non-emergency incidents to report to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Non-emergency calls should be made to 713-221-6000. Be observant and take down any information that will be useful to the reporting deputy - license plate numbers for speeding or suspicious vehicles, as well as make, model and color of the vehicle, will all make the deputy’s job easier upon arrival. Take down a brief description of any suspicious persons you see - physical description and clothing, as well as where you last saw them and which way they were traveling. If you are reporting an annoying noise, attempt to determine the physical address of where the noise is coming from, so you can inform dispatch when you call.

If your situation requires immediate assistance and you feel it is life threatening, please call 911.

HOW tO Use CHrIstMAs LIGHts sAFeLY

• Keep Christmas lights stored in a covered box, wrapped neatly around a plastic light organizer or just loosely wrapped, untangled.• Check each and every light for broken or non-functioning bulbs. Discard lights that don’t work and replace with new bulbs.• Make sure cords and wiring are intact. Avoid frayed cords - discard immediately if frayed.• Know that there are separate lights for indoor and outdoor use. Use indoor lights inside your home and UL-approved outdoor lights outside.• Turn off all Christmas lights when you go to bed.• Use mini, low-voltage lights on a tree. The large lights generate too much heat and can dry out your tree faster, making it a fire hazard.

HOLIDAY DANGers tO petsToxic plants and holiday/winter products:Plants and other items associated with the winter and holiday season can be toxic to your pets. What follows is a general guide. Please consult your veterinarian, animal poison control and the manufacturer for specifics. Remember, the earlier you seek treatment, the better for your pet!

Low toxicity - poinsettia leaves/stems; balsam/pine/cedar/fir; angel hair (spun glass); Christmas tree preservatives; snow sprays/snow flock; tree ornaments; super glue; styrofoam; icicles (tinsel) and crayons/paints.

Moderate toxicity - fireplace colors/salts; plastic model cement Moderate to high toxicity holly berries and leaves; bubbling lights (methylene chloride); snow scenes (may contain salmonella); aftershaves/perfumes/alcoholic beverages and chocolate (dark is more toxic than milk).

Highly toxic - mistletoe (especially berries); expoxy adhesives; and antifreeze.

Please note that some items have special problems. For example, whereas angel hair is usually considered to be of low toxicity, it can irritate eyes, skin and the gastrointestinal tract; the content of Christmas tree preservatives varies and often effects depend upon the amount ingested; styrofoam, small parts from Christmas tree ornaments and toys, as well as tinsel, can cause mechanical obstructions in the gastrointestinal tract; snow flock can cause problems if sprayed into the mouth and inhaled and chocolate, of any type, should never be given to a pet. Antifreeze deserves special mention because even a very small amount can be rapidly fatal to pets.

LOCAL TEACHERS ATTEND TSCA CONVENTIONSan Antonio was the site of the recent Texas Speech Communication Association convention (TSCA) which was attended by a group of six current and retired speech teachers and debate coaches from Katy. In addition to numerous interesting, useful and thought provoking sessions on all aspects of teaching speech and debate, several awards were given. Notably among the awards was Secondary Speech Educator of the Year, which was presented to Gay Hollis, James Taylor High School debate coach. She has had a very successful coaching career at Taylor and other schools and is a teacher looked up to by students and colleagues alike. Other teachers attending were the speech and debate coaches from Mayde Creek High School, Greg McGee; from Morton Ranch High School, Carrie Sanguinetti and from Seven Lakes High School, Charli Lennon.

Carrie Sanguinetti, Charli Lennon, Gay Hollis, Bo Williamson, Norma Coston and Greg McGee.

Gay Hollis being presented award by Sandra Jones of Alief ISD and

committee chair.

George Tennison being presented award by Sandra Jones of Alief ISD and

committee chair.

Rounding out the group were retired Katy teachers Norma Coston and Bo Williamson who currently own Custom Awards & Engraving in Katy. Although retired from teaching and coaching, the two remain active in their professional association and Custom Awards & Engraving donates the award plaques each year for the various categories of Educator of the Year. Both Bo and Norma are Life Members of the association and while Coston has been a member for 32 years, Williamson boasts a 48-year membership.

Another winner from our area was George Tennison, speech teacher and debate coach from Olle Middle School in the Alief School District. He was honored as TSCA’s Middle School Speech Educator of the Year.

Next year’s convention will be held in Corpus Christi and all speech and debate teachers are encouraged to attend and learn from the sessions provided as well as ideas of colleagues’ they meet. It’s a “once a year” opportunity to experience a “teaching growth spurt” over a short period of time.

CELEBRATION OF LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO’S 70TH ANNIVERSARY BRINGS COUNTRY ACT TO BENEFIT

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDFollowing the FFA motto “…Living to serve,” in 1943, L.D. Robinson, former Katy High School agriculture teacher, initiated the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo to serve and better prepare Katy ISD students. To celebrate the legacy of Robinson and the anniversary of the FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Casey Donahew Band will perform a concert on February 9, 2013 at 7 PM at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund.

The L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund was established in 1970 to honor Robinson. Multiple four-year scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 per semester to graduating seniors in the Katy ISD FFA and Agriculture Science program who meet the requirements of the scholarship. To date, the scholarship fund has awarded almost 90 recipients.

“We are so excited to feature the Casey Donahew Band to celebrate 70 years of grand achievements within the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo,” says Diana Elder, daughter of L.D. Robinson and co-advisor/director of the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. “In the spirit of my father, we would like to continue to give back to the community by increasing scholarship funds for students through this benefit concert.”

Casey Donahew released his fourth studio album, Double Wide Dream, in October 2011. In 2012, the Donahew organization received five nominations at the annual Texas Regional Radio Music awards and in June signed up for professional membership with the Academy of Country Music (ACM).

For more information about the concert, contact Ben Rolens, general manager of facilities at the Leonard E. Merrell Center, at 281-396-2562. Go to www.merrellcenter.org to get your tickets online.

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
