Hugh George Williams founded the College in 1894. The photo above shows him taking an early class in Charters Towers, North Queensland, proudly displaying the two typewriters that were the latest technological wizardry of the day.

His goals, which have been upheld by successive generations of the Williams family and successive owners are to:

Our graduates benefit from the long reputation of the College, while at the same time continuing to build it and their own reputations by delivering a competitive edge in the employment market. Some of their stories are here, and on our website, because they are good illustrations of what can be achieved through quality training, hard work and a “can do” attitude.

This handbook introduces you to the philosophy of our college and gives detailed information on the current programs. You are also welcome to visit us to see our facilities and discuss your career options.

Who are the students at Williams?

School leavers:

Williams is unlike University. We don’t require an ATAR. What we offer is management, marketing and secretarial courses that are suitable for high school graduates. Our subjects are structured so that you build your qualification in stages with assessments each term (10 weeks) spreading the work.

We know from many years of experience that if you are interested in your chosen field, you will do well. With the skills and knowledge you need to get your career off to a great start, you are ready for work after just 1 year with us. Many of our graduates have also continued to university using credits from the qualifications they gained at Williams, and with the confidence that they are making the right choice for longer term commitment to study.

International students:

Williams has welcomed international students to its classes since the 1970s. We recognise what a broadening effect they have on college life and how, in turn, we can broaden their experience of life.

About one quarter of our student body is from overseas. In recent years, our international and exchange students came from the following countries: Bhutan, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan,

About you: your business future

Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Madagascar, Malaysia, Nepal,Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, SouthKorea,Switzerland,Taiwan,Thailand,Turkey,UnitedKingdomandtheUSA.

Mature students:

Williams offers full time, part time and short courses designed specifically for mature students. Whether you are looking at a career change, or enhancing or formalising your qualifications, we have a course to suit. You may take individual subjects, or whole qualifications by day or evening.

Our evening programs are tailored to suit students who have a minimum of two years (although often much more) work experience. Your work does not necessarily need to be in the area you wish to study, and a Williams qualification can be a great career enhancement on its own, or can give you the interest and the confidence to continue on to further studies using your nationally recognised Williams qualification to gain credits at University.

Reputation

The Williams family managed the College for 115 years. Thousands of quality business graduates have made Williams a trusted name that employers know and value.

Employment

We routinely receive many graduate positions from employers. We help you to prepare for employment and make informed decisions with a Career Strategies program. This covers resumé and application preparation, interview techniques, job-hunting strategies, and planning for ongoing career development. Student Services then continue to work with you on your final job selection.

Enjoyment

There is more to College than just study! It’s a place to make new friends and participate in social events during the year. The Student Council plans fund raisers, BBQs, club nights, harbour cruises, and a range of social events.

Endorsement

The College is a Registered Training Organisation approved by the New South Wales Vocational Education and Training Accreditation Board (VETAB), and the qualifications we offer are nationally recognised. It is a foundation member of the Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET). The qualifications are recognised internationally by being listed on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).

Environment

The campus at North Sydney is a delightful place to study, with light and airy classrooms and plenty of green space in the park outside to relax and refresh during the lunch break. Visit www.williams.edu.au and take a tour to get a feel for our campus.

Student amenities include a well-equipped student common room, outside balconies, a lunch café at the entrance to the campus building, and personal lockers.

The campus is close to North Sydney CBD and an easy walk from trains and buses.

Flexible, friendly and focused education

We prefer to keep our college on a human scale, with a few hundred rather than a few thousand students – large enough for diversity but small enough for us to know and care for each student personally. It is important for us that you feel comfortable, make friends and develop personally as well as professionally.

Employers want people that are computer savvy and can communicate, write, analyse, think independently, work with a team, and make right decisions. If you work with us, you will gain these qualities along with your nationally recognised qualifications. Our average class size is under 20 – large enough for interaction and team learning, but small enough for your voice, ideas, questions and concerns to be heard.

Why Choose Williams?

Structured classes are held between 9am and 5pm Mondays to Thursdays leaving you time out on Fridays for additional study, team projects, work experience or a casual job. Subjects are delivered over 5 or 10 week periods. Each subject has clear objectives and a timeframe short enough to encourage active, organised study. There’s a holiday every 10 weeks to recover!

Teachers you can relate to

Teachers at Williams Business College are professionals with qualifications in both training/education and their specialised subject areas. They bring a wealth of current information, industry contacts to classes. Our subjects allow sufficient time not only for lectures and teaching, but mentoring individuals as well.

Support networks and a friendly atmosphere

We want you to enjoy yourself while you are at learning at Williams. Williams has support networks to make your time at college fulfilling and fun.

• Astaffmemberwillhelpyoumanageyourprogramandanydifficulties that might affect your studies.

• StudentServicespersonneltohelpinotherareas,includingpersonal welfare and guidance.

• AnactiveStudentCounciltomanagethesocial, culturalandcharitable activities in the College, and student/management liaison.

• A long history of College Directors who have been in thebusiness of quality education for over a century.

Advance to Higher Education

Williams Advanced Diploma and Diploma graduates meet the minimum entry requirements for most Australian universities. Provided you have completed HSC or equivalent and meet minimum entry grades in your Williams course, you can apply to any university or Higher Education Provider (HEP) for credit transfer or advanced standing into one of their relevant undergraduate degrees.

Spring in Paris!

Spend a semester in Paris (March to June), continue your studies (in English), learn some French, and immerse yourself in the culture of one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the world.

ESA Paris offers an international business program in English, and we can help you select subjects which will be relevant to your future plans. Located in central Paris, you have easy access to the all the sights and activities, history and tremendous beauty this city has to offer.

ESA can arrange student accommodation, and Williams can help with student visas and travel details.

A group of ESA Paris exchange students in front of the North Sydney campus.

Exchange and ChangeOverseas travel is a great experience. Living in another country and studying there expands your horizons even more. At Williams we are establishing exchange programs abroad to offer our students the opportunity to develop, in both business and life skills.

There are many benefits to participating in an exchange program.

Travel plans, accommodation, costs and your objectives are sorted well before you go.

Classes are all taken in English.

You spend enough time in an overseas location to really be part of another culture. This is probably the single most important aspect of business globalisation. It is the reason we are developing exchange programs.

Our current international links are in France and Finland. We have welcomed students from these exchange partners at Williams, and can now offer our students the same experience in return. We are very conscious of the cost of spending time away from home, so we are working to make the exchange experience as affordable as possible.

Snow in Scandinavia!

For a completely different experience, you can venture to central Finland, just below the Arctic Circle.

For 10 years now, Williams has welcomed students from the Finnish School of SME Business - a faculty of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences. A semester in another country is an integral part of the Finnish School’s 4-year International Marketing Degree program, and Williams has been the choice for many students over that time.

The Gateway Program is a 3-month program (March to May) encompassing the history, culture and economics of Finland, the Baltic States, and Russia. The program (conducted in English) includes a study tour to the Baltic States or Russia, as well as visiting companies in Finland.

TheSchoolisatKauhava,centralFinland,350kmnorthofHelsinki,andstudentslive on campus or nearby student accommodation. You will experience the warmth and sophistication of Scandinavian culture, and the incomparable beauty of a season change as deep snow is replaced by green forests and wildflowers. You do not need a student visa, and the tuition fees are fully subsidised by the Finnish Government, reducing expenses to travel and living costs.

For more than 20 years, Williams’ business majors in management and marketing have established a reputation for depth, breadth and student achievement.

If you have substantial relevant work experience, we recommend you look at our part-time evening/Saturday program – see page 13.

School leavers and students without previous business experience begin with the one-semester Certificate IV in Business, itself a broad-based, stand-alone business course that is the foundation for both majors. It covers essential computer, communication, financial, marketing and project management skills. The Advanced Diploma level occupies the second semester of study.

The Management and Marketing advanced diplomas, are among our most popular programs delivering knowledge and skills appropriate for entry to lower or trainee management and subsequent progression with experience to middle management. The programs are also ideal for those wishing to set up their own businesses.

The Advanced Diploma of Marketing recognises that effective marketing is essential to any successful business. The subjects provide an understanding of how consumers behave and how to research and analyse a market, then how to draw up and manage a marketing plan both nationally and internationally. You also learn how to manage the changes that an entrepreneurial marketing drive inevitably brings to a business, as well as the finances that underpin the marketing process.

International students are invited to call for information about our new night courses. Certificate III, IV and Advanced Diploma of Business run 5 nights a week over 2 years.

Management and Marketing

Alana Ranatawake chose a position in Marketing Communications when she finished her Williams program, and loves the variety and people contact in her job. “The study experience was a very enjoyable experience and you learn and make good friends along the way.”

Fernando Vieira chose Williams’ double major for his Australian experience in education. “The college staff provide fantastic support, and I enjoyed the program. While challenging, it is definitely worth it.”

Sharon Moore “Juggling work and study commitments successfully gave me a significant advantage as the subjects were backed by real life experience”.

Sarah Frazer works for Foxtel as a programmer for Fox 8. “I chose the double major because of its diversity, and I am using my organisational, time management and computing skills from Williams all the time in my role.”

Joel Pallister has been putting his Williams skills into practice for CMC (Australia) for nearly 10 years. “I have loved my role since day one, and particularly like the travel, flexibility and responsibility. The program was a great choice for me.”

Whether you wish to work in a small business, a large corporate environment, or to start your own company, the Advanced Diploma of Management will prepare you with the skills needed for today’s business world. The subjects include management strategy and planning, operational management, leadership, how to manage change, risk and finances, and the planning and management of marketing.

Our flagship program provides the best of both worlds – the double advanced diplomas in management and marketing. This mix has gained our graduates the best jobs because it offers maximum career flexibility. Our graduates have progressed in careers in all types of businesses, large and small, in Australia and around the world. While the double Advanced Diplomas require more work and commitment from you, they also deliver greater rewards and the potential for greater credit if articulating to degree programs later.

In most programs, you also choose a elective subject from – Events Management, Human Resources or Financial Control to allow you to personalise the course. More details on page 10.

Danilo Avalone had completed a degree in external trade in Brazil before coming to Williams. “The additional skills and business knowledge I gained at Williams has been invaluable. I now live in Australia and run my own business working in recruitment and education.”

Diploma of Business Administration BSB50407 Certificate IV in Business Administration BSB40507 (incorporating Certificate III subjects)

Williams has built a strong reputation in secretarial training for over 100 years. We routinely receive far more positions than we have graduates to fill. It is the variety of opportunity and wealth of available positions that makes these programs so popular.

If you have substantial relevant work experience, we recommend you look at our part-time evening/Saturday program – see page 11.

School leavers and students without previous business experience begin with the pre-requisite subjects from Certificate III in Business Administration, that provide foundation skills with a heavy emphasis on computer expertise. It is ideal for people who wish to gain practical skills for a first office position. Certificate IV in Business Administration is awarded after 6 months.

The Certificate IV in Business Administration builds on basics from Certificate III, extending computer skills and introducing supervisory and higher skill level subjects, allowing you to take on more responsibility. You develop skills in researching and reporting, complex word processing, building relationships and networks of people, and managing projects and business travel arrangements.

Our top program for over a century has been the Diploma of Business Administration. Williams has a long-held reputation with top employers for arming our secretaries and Personal Assistants with the right skills, knowledge and attitudes. An executive PA is an integral part of a management team, and we find that many of our graduates move into management roles in the years after they leave College.

Executive Secretarial/Personal Assistant/Office Manager

Lara Goudie landed a job with Servcorp when she graduated. “I enjoy looking after high profile clients in a role that is very demanding and where the quality of my work is very important. Williams really prepared me for this type of working environment.”

Leigh Chadwick’s role with Wildfire Publishing International included being Secretary to the Managing Director and also Directories Co-ordinator. “I chose Williams’ program as it covered a variety of skills. I love that this role includes attending fashion shoots, seminars and product launches.”

Angela Berry launched her career as a secretary in the Global Human Resource Solutions Group at Pricewaterhouse Coopers. “I moved from Gunnedah to Sydney and was looking for a course that would give me a good foundation to work in the corporate business sector in Sydney.”

Xanthe Addison joined Synchro Marketing as an Administrator. Synchro specialises in customer loyalty campaigns, event management and staff and customer incentive programs. “It’s a great way to be involved in a dynamic marketing environment, and I spend my time organising staff, answering queries, maintaining data and keeping the office happy and organised.”

The Diploma subjects build on those in the Certificate III and Certificate IV to give top level administrative skills. They give you the skills to manage word processing and whole administrative systems, manage meetings and conferences and take care of the day-to-day running of the computer network requirements of a small office. You also choose an elective subject from three available areas – Legal Secretarial, Events Management and Human Resources – to allow you to personalise the course.

For those who want to change careers or to update their skills quickly, our short office skills course is a one-term (10 week) full-time or part time program designed to add basic administrative and computer skills to other abilities. You can choose from a wide range of available subjects that are relevant to your own circumstances and receive recognized AQF Statements of Attainment for those competencies.

Georgina Burrows and Gabriella Foster both joined Clayton Utz’s one-year graduate program for the opportunity to experience different areas in the firm before being offered a permanent position in an area of their choice. Georgina: “Choosing the legal specialisation at Williams has really prepared me well for my traineeship.” Gabriella: “Clayton Utz is a great firm that is constantly growing and with the back up of my “Williams” skills I look forward to excelling in the field.”

Overview

Students in the Diploma of Business Administration, Advanced Diploma of Management and Advanced Diploma of Marketing programs may choose an elective subject that fits their interests and will enhance their qualification. The electives are selected because they represent areas where our students have commonly been employed in the past.

The electives are Legal Secratarial, Event Management and Human Resources. Subject to timetabling, it may be possible to take 2 electives (see student services regarding additional fees).

LEGAL SECRETARIAL

Many of our graduates are placed with legal firms, and the Legal Secretarial Elective is available to Diploma students and enables you to expand your core administrative skills to cover the legal environment. After an introduction to law, you develop skills in word processing, office procedures and accounting tasks specific to a legal office. The additional subjects may be scheduled during normal class time, or on Fridays. We use working industry specialists to deliver these subjects, so just when they are offered depends on the availability of the specialists.

Legal Firms who have employed our graduates include Blake Dawson, Clayton Utz, Freehills, Henry Davis York and Minter Ellison and the Crown Solicitors Office.

Short and Part Time Courses at Williams

Part time day study

All our full time courses may be taken part time by attending either a Monday + Wednesday pattern or a Tuesday + Thursday pattern. Fees are half the normal full-time fee each term, and completion times are usually twice the normal full-time course duration. While you will most often be able to nominate your chosen days, you may occasionally have to move to the other pair of days to access some subjects.

Part time evening and Saturday study

Special evening versions of the Diploma of Business Adminis-tration and Advanced Diplomas of Business Management and Marketing are available. At least one year’s relevant work experience is needed to enter directly into the Diploma and at least two years for direct Advanced Diploma entry.

A variety of delivery patterns make this a particularly flexible program for working professionals. Eight subjects are required for each qualification. At least two subjects are available each term, so it is practicable to complete the qualification in four terms or one year. However, if work or other commitments intrude, you can reduce your study load to one subject, or skip study entirely for a time. Our evening short courses offer opportunities to learn new skills in just 10 weeks – 1 night a week. Courses include: touch typing, word processing, excel spreadsheets, powerpoint

presentations, MYOB etc. and a refresher course for those with some experience & knowledge of these programs. Are you struggling with MS Office 2007? We can help.

The classes assume you will do substantial private study. You will need a computer at home, or may use the private study facilities at the College. Most subjects require you to attend College for five evening lectures, plus one full Saturday workshop.

Full details of these courses are on the next two pages.

Short courses

The Short Office Skills Certificate is a one-term (10 week) full-time, flexible course leading to Statements of Attainment in individual competencies. It is designed for those who wish to add basic administrative and computer skills to other abilities and is ideal for people who want to change careers or to update their skills in the shortest practicable time. Further details are on page 9.

You may also attend any individual subject being offered in any course, day or evening. You are issued with a Statement of Attainment for the competency or competencies in the subject on successful completion. For details of subject availability, talk to our Student Services people.

Allecia Robinson became a Corporate Consultant for Australian Business and Conference Travel after completing her Williams program. “I have already been to Singapore, Hamilton Island and Brisbane with conferences I have organised and I LOVE my job.”

Personal Assistants are so in demand that learning on the job offers attractive prospects. Then there are vast benefits both for the individual and their organisation in learning formal skills in areas where supervisory or effective unsupervised work is required. How to gain those skills while working can be complex and time consuming. However Williams has over 100 years of experience in this area, and we have developed a course which delivers the latest skills around your work commitments, and it doesn’t take forever!

Eight subjects are required for the qualification. These may be taken in any order or combination, with subjects offered by evening with Saturday workshops, or by day if that suits your circumstances. With multiple starting dates throughout the year, subjects can be fitted around work schedules. You may also add computer subjects to enhance and develop your skills specific to your current role.

At least two subjects are available by evening/Saturday workshop each term, so it is practicable to complete the qualification in four terms or one year. However, if work or other commitments intrude, you can reduce your study load to one subject, or skip study entirely for a time. Some subjects may also be available with offset starts, making it even easier to fit your study load into a busy life.

The classes assume you will do substantial private study. You will need a computer at home, or may use the private study facilities at the College. Most evening subjects require you to attend College for five evening lectures, plus a one-only full Saturday workshop.

As a guideline for entry, around one year full-time relevant work experience is recommended to gain the most from this qualification. Alternatively, you need to have the majority of the competencies required for a Certificate IV in Administration or other relevant qualification. The Williams computer subjects can also serve as experience for those people who have been working in a different environment and wish to change to a rewarding career as a Personal Assistant.

There are seven required subjects and one more to be chosen from a wide range of practical electives to suit your needs. Contact us for details of subjects.

Our student services people can advise on study plans to suit your particular circumstances.

Advanced Diplomas of Management and Marketing Part time evening/Saturday study

In today’s increasingly sophisticated business world, it is essential that managers and marketers have formalised skills and knowledge to make a significant contribution to their organisation. By popular demand Williams has developed these courses that provide core knowledge, special interest areas, and allow for study outside regular business hours so careers are not interrupted by study, but enhanced with new ideas and strategies.

And it doesn’t take forever!

The 8 subjects required for each qualification may be taken in any order or combination (subject to timetabling), with normal progress being 2 subjects per 10-week term allowing completion of the management or marketing qualification in 1 year. Study patterns are one evening per week plus one Saturday workshop per subject. With multiple starting dates throughout the year, subjects can be fitted around the most strenuous of work schedules, or staggered so assessments are spread throughout the program.

Because some subjects are common between the two qualifications, it is possible to achieve a double Advanced Diploma by taking an additional two subjects. Depending on subject timetabling, it would be possible to complete this very practical double Adv Diploma in 15 to 18 months.

As a guideline, two years full-time relevant work experience is recommended to gain the most from this qualification. Alternatively, you need to have the majority of the competencies required for a Diploma of Management/Marketing or other relevant qualification.

The program overview on page 6 shows the subjects contained in these programs.

All programs lead to nationally recognised industry-standard AQF qualifications or Statements of Attainment

Is the College/Course accredited?Yes. The College is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), and its programs lead to nationally recognised industry-standard AQF qualifications or Statements of Attainment.

Do you have entry requirements? Williams programs are designed so that people of all levels of ability are able to benefit from vocational skills training, and our philosophy is to place more value on how students perform at each qualification level of a program than on their UAI scores. Those who have not completed the HSC may enter Certificate IV programs in any school of study, and are considered for entry to higher levels if performance is satisfactory. Those who have completed HSC, as well as mature age students, may enter all vocational programs at all levels.

Do you take international students and are there any special rules for them?Williams has warmly welcomed international students since the mid-1970s. They help us to globalise and enrich our business learning experience to everyone’s advantage. Typically 25-30% of our students are international or exchange students with no one country predominating. In the past two years, they came from: Bhutan, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan,Kazakhstan,Lebanon,Madagascar,Malaysia,Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania,Slovakia,SouthKorea,Switzerland,Taiwan,Thailand,Turkey,UnitedKingdomandthe USA.

Due to visa and other legal requirements, there are special rules for international students, and they change from time to time. The latest information is in our International Student FAQ at http://www.williams.edu.au/sitepages/50_faq_international.htm.

Do you give credits or recognition for previous learning? You may be able to save time and fees if you are exempt from subjects. To gain exemption, you need to provide evidence that you can satisfy the subject competency for which exemption is sought. This could include certificates showing successful previous study, or work or life experience that can be evidenced. Because the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) allows considerable flexibility in how qualifications are gained, you may also gain credit for subjects or competencies that are not part of our program and be able to enter directly into a higher level.

Our Student Services people can give you guidance.

If you think you may be entitled to exemptions, you should contact us and request a copy of the subject description you would like to be exempted from. Read through it to see if you have covered all competencies for that subject and can provide evidence to show that e.g. a transcript or exam paper or certificate. Then tick the appropriate “yes” box on the enrolment application form and we will give you an Exemption Request Form and information on how to prepare your evidence. Exemptions should be applied for at the beginning when you submit your application and receive your timetable.

What university pathways are available?Williams Advanced Diploma and Diploma graduates meet the minimum entry requirements for most Australian universities. Provided you have completed HSC or equivalent and meet minimum entry grades in your Williams course, you can apply to any university or Higher Education Provider (HEP) for credit transfer or advanced standing into one of their relevant undergraduate degrees.

Each university or HEP grants credit differently depending on their policies, the subjects and results achieved in your Diploma or Advanced Diploma at Williams, and other study or experience in your life. For example, some universities and HEPs give block credit based on the qualification achieved while others apply credit on a subject-by-subject basis. We can advise you on the best way to structure your program if you are seeking to continue on to degree level, and will help you in your selection of and application to universities or HEPs.

How do I enrol? There is an application form in this Handbook, or contact the College and we can email or post one to you.

Do I have to decide my electives or elective when I enrol? No. We will introduce you to the electives in day programs after you have begun your program so that you can make an informed decision.

Do I get a student ID card? All full time students receive a student identification card that entitles them to regular student concessions.

What non-academic support do you provide? We like you to settle in quickly, so you will be

given a full orientation, normally on the work day before your start date. At Orientation, you are introduced to the structure of your program and the College facilities. We also walk you through how the College works and what our expectations are.

Our Student Services team will help you before, during and after your time at Williams with all non-academic matters related to your study. These include guidance in job-seeking (both for part-time work while you study and full-time work when you finish) and in selecting further study options at Williams or other Australian institutions. We also help country students find accommodation and settle into a new city.

Do you practice access and equity principles? We both practice and teach principles of fairness, access, equity and privacy. We recognise that, by providing a learning environment and related support mechanisms which encourage all students to achieve their personal best, regardless of their background and personal circumstances, it will both enrich their quality of life and make the College more relevant to society as a whole. Details of College policies and legislative requirements in this area are contained in the Code of Practice available at http://www.williams.edu.au/sitepages/55_code_of_practice.htm.

What do I wear to College? We require you to dress appropriately for an office environment (smart casual – no jeans, t-shirts or running shoes). This is a practice which we have found works well in developing a businesslike attitude, and it helps you develop your own style for the office. Students can let their hair down on occasional “mufti days”.

What are the hours, and how does the timetable work? For full-time day students, subjects are timetabled from Monday to Thursday between 9am and 5pm. Some electives subjects may be timetabled on Fridays, and if so you will be given two or more weeks notice; otherwise you are free to use Fridays for study, for work or as you please. Students can use Fridays to come to College for assignment or group project work. For more information on timetabling, including sample timetables, visit http://www.williams.edu.au/sitepages/50_starts.htm.

Do you have minimum attendance and achievement requirements?Yes. As both the delivery and assessment of your vocational subjects are competency based, you

Frequently Asked Questions

15

will have difficulty if you often miss class or are late. Should your attendance rate in any subject become lower than 90% for whatever reason, or your academic results be unsatisfactory, your Director of Studies will work over the problems with you to establish the best way forward. If your attendance rate in any subject is less than 80%, you may be failed in that subject.

What happens if I have to miss classes? You may apply for leave of absence or deferment of your studies. Leave of absence is approval to miss up to 20% of your studies in a subject or subjects. Deferment is approval to defer one or more terms. Application should be made to the Principal and must be applied for immediately you become aware you will be absent from classes.

How are subjects taught? Most of our teaching is classroom based, though a wide range of methods are used depending on the nature of the subject. These range from lecture and seminar sessions to role-plays, demonstrations, group practical projects and case study work.

How much study is required out of class time? Most subjects will require you to do some study, research, assignment or project work outside class time. An average student should allow around 4 hours per week at Certificate level and 8 hours per week at Diploma or Advanced Diploma levels. The actual time needed will vary depending on your personal abilities, language ability, work habits and subject mix.

Can I get additional help with subjects?Yes. Teachers at Williams monitor the progress of each student, and will spend additional time with you if you are having problems in understanding the subject or managing your study, or with language, literacy or numeracy.

How are subjects assessed?Assessment in vocational subjects is competency based – i.e. you need to provide your teacher with the evidence that you meet a set of performance criteria for each subject. These are given to you in full when you begin each subject. The assessment methods vary between subjects, but include direct teacher assessment in class, project and assignment work, examination, and practical demonstration.

Most subjects require between 3 and 5 assessments, spread throughout the delivery of the subject.

What happens if I fail or miss an assessment?Provided you attend and your progress is satisfactorily, it would be most unusual for you to fail all of the performance criteria for a subject. Where only some of the criteria are not met, your teacher will set you additional tasks and assessments to satisfy those criteria. In other cases, your Principal will work with you to set a new study strategy that will depend on the subject and the level of competence you have already shown.

What do I get at the end of my program?WBC vocational qualifications are presented to graduands at Graduation Ceremonies normally held in December.

You will be issued with the following documents when you complete or terminate a Williams program:

• An Australian Quality Training Framework(AQTF) Statement of Attainment, which shows the national standard industry competencies you have achieved. All registered vocational training organisations in Australia now issue these documents, ensuring that your skills are recognised by all employers and other educational organisations nationwide.

• A Williams Business College Transcript ofResults.

• YourAQTFQualificationorQualifications.Thequalification levels are Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma, and are issued only if you achieve all the required competencies (subjects) that industry specifies for the qualification.

What are the College’s refund policies? They are given in full in the enrolment application section at the back of this Handbook.

How do you resolve grievances or disputes? The College has many support systems and networks so as to reduce the chance of grievances before they occur, whether they are against the College or against the student. A Director of Studies helps you manage your program, Student Services personnel help in other areas, and an active Student Council ensures good student/management liaison. If a grievance or dispute does arise, the Code of Practice in the student handbook gives procedures for resolution that are designed to be fair, fast, include a nominee of the student if the student wishes, and involve minimum cost if independent moderation is required.

Williams’ graduate Megan Marshall displays some of the charity fund-raising activities that the student council gets involved in.
