Dear Parents and Carers,

sure you have confirmed your time with your child’s
teacher.

The Big Vegie Crunch Did you know that currently
only 5% of NSW children are
eating enough vegetables?
In order to work towards
improving this percentage, we need to increase
children’s knowledge, exposure and positive attitudes
towards vegetables. Vegetable Week is a NSW health
initiative aimed to promote these outcomes.
In 2019 vegetable week will run from Monday 1 April to
Friday 5 April, with ‘The Big Vegie Crunch’ being held at
10am on Thursday 4 April.
Our school will be participating by exposing our
students to the benefits of vegetables within classroom
activities as well as participating in the ‘Big Vegie
Crunch’.
On Thursday 4 April at 10 am our school will be joining
hundreds of schools across NSW to break the record for
the most students crunching vegetables simultaneously.
But we need your help to make it a success!
On Thursday 4 April, please pack your child a container
of vegetables (not fruit this time) for them to crunch on.
Need some ideas?
• carrot, celery, cucumber - cut into sticks or left
whole
• capsicum - cut into sticks or wedges
• corn - raw baby corn spears or a cooked corn cob
• broccoli or cauliflower florets - raw or lightly
cooked to keep their crunch
• tomatoes - small cherry tomatoes or a large
tomato that can be eaten like an apple
• beans or snow peas - raw or lightly cooked to
keep their crunch
• mushrooms - sliced or left whole
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to
contact the school.
P & C Meeting
There has been a change to the date of our next P & C
Meeting. Our monthly P & C Meeting will be held in the
staffroom on Thursday 4 April at 9.00am. Please join us,
all welcome!
Annual Report
Our 2018 Annual Report is nearing completion and will
be published on the school website. This mandatory
document is completed by schools to highlight major
programs and Strategic Directions and communicate
them to the school community.
NAPLAN - 2019 In May 2019, the National Assessment
Program - Literacy and Numeracy
(NAPLAN) will be completed by
students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support
of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will
assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across
Australian schools.
The results of the tests will provide valuable information
to schools about what each student can do, and will be
used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents
will receive a report indicating their child’s level of
achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be
reported against the national minimum standard.
Please ask your child’s teacher for any additional
information regarding NAPLAN.

Tell Them From Me Student
- Feedback Survey This term, our school, like many
other public schools in the state, will
participate in a Department of
Education initiative: the Tell Them
From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures
factors that are known to affect academic achievement
and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide
survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and
effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available at:
http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to
provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what
they think about school life, how engaged they are with
school and the different ways that teachers interact with
them. Schools in Australia and around the world have
used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how
they do things at school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The
survey is conducted online and will typically take less
than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered
during school hours before 12 April.
Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary!
Homework Centre The Homework Centre will finish this week. There will be
NO Homework Centre in the last
week of the term. It will re-open
again next term once teachers have
distributed homework for their
classes.
Easter Hat Parade Hopefully our K-2 students
will have started making their
wonderful ‘hats’ in readiness
for the Parade which will take
place on Friday 12 April -
12.00pm under the main COLA. I’m looking forward to
seeing all the creative designs!
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
William Stimson has begun their PBL (Positive Behaviour
for Learning) journey! This journey is ongoing and will
take some time to set up. Separate phases will be rolled
out at various times.
PBL is an evidence-based whole school framework that
actively promotes positive behaviour. It enables students
to develop a clear understanding of required
expectations, become responsible for their own
behaviour and work together to create a positive,
productive and harmonious learning community.
The PBL committee have been working hard surveying
staff, students and the community on what core values
our school would like to pursue. Behaviour expectations
are also in the process of being developed with positive
and consistent language. Once these expectations have
been established posters will be designed to be displayed
across the school.
We have introduced the 3 core values we will be
promoting and encouraging in our learners - RESPECT,
RESPONSIBILITY & RESILIENCE.

Term Two - Athletics Program
Next term, students will be
once again participating in
an exciting athletics
program organised by an
experienced external
provider, ‘Dancefever Multisport’.
Dancefever Multisport will provide staff who will teach
the students sprinting, long jump, high jump, shot put,
discus, relays and hurdles so that the students are
prepared for their athletics carnival. The program is
structured for all ages and abilities and the students will
not only learn the event techniques, but the rules and
safety aspects for each event. The program is aligned
with the PDHPE curriculum and the students will be
assessed accordingly. We are really looking forward to
having Dancefever Multisport continue to work with the
staff and students of WSPS!
The price of $28.00 for the ten-week program is
discounted. We are asking to pay the fee in a single
payment. Please make payment by Friday 12 April.

Stage 2 Coding - During library lessons, Stage 2 students
have been learning about coding. Topics covered include:
What is coding? Where is coding used? and Why is
coding important?
Coding makes computers work. There is a huge demand
for technology, so we need people that are able to write
code. In the future, it is important that more computer
scientists are trained to keep producing all the machines
that are part of our lives every day, e.g. smartphones,
washing machines, microwaves.
Here are some excited students using the computer
program Blockly to start coding!
