Summary:Act4,scene1Inadarkcavern,abubblingcauldronhissesandspits,andthethreewitchessuddenlyappearonstage.Theycirclethecauldron,chantingspellsandaddingbizarreingredientstotheirstew—“eyeofnewtandtoeoffrog,/Woolofbatandtongueofdog”(4.1.14–15).Hecatematerializesandcomplimentsthewitchesontheirwork.Oneofthewitchesthenchants:“Bytheprickingofmythumbs,/Somethingwickedthiswaycomes”(4.1.61–62).Infulfillmentofthewitch’sprediction,Macbethenters.Heasksthewitchestorevealthetruthoftheirpropheciestohim.Toanswerhisquestions,theysummonhorribleapparitions,eachofwhichoffersaprediction.
