Great work This week I would like to congratulate the following students for some outstanding work. Marco S, Lily Rose M and Isabella P for great work in their co- operative reading group activities. The level and sophistication of their conversations about the book they were reading was very im- pressive. Nirasha S, Mikalee M, Amal E for great problem solving using frac- tions in Mathematics. They were presented with some very challeng- ing problems by both Mr S and myself and answered them correctly. Well done. Hundreds of thousands of students in primary and secondary schools from around 30 countries sat the Aus-

tralian Mathematics Competition on the 28th of July this year. Students from Year 3 to Year 12 compete on

the same day, making it possibly one of the largest single events on the Australian education calendar. It was

introduced in 1978 as the first competition of its kind in Australia. It is now a truly international event, test-

ing students’ mathematical ability throughout the Pacific and South-East Asia. It tests everything from

basic numeracy skills through to advanced problem solving.

The grade 3-6 teachers chose 24 students to compete. 2 students received a Distinction certificate (in the

top 20% of students), 9 students received a Credit certificate (in the top 55% of students), 11 students re-

ceived a Proficiency certificate and 2 students received a Participation certificate. Each student who partic-

ipated received their certificate at assembly, as well as an individual performance report.

Congratulations to the following students for participating

On behalf of all the staff at William Ruthven Primary School I would like to congratulate the students who

participated, and commend them on their great results. This is a testament to the hard work shown by both

staff and students during their numeracy learning.

Grade 1/2 Numeracy - Capacity

27th October 2016 Page 4

In 1/2 we have been learning about capacity. In this lesson we had to measure how many cups of water were needed to fill our container. This is called informal measurement. We

now know that we can measure liquids in litres and millilitres. 1000 mls = 1 litre

As part of a writing task the 3/4 students wrote letters to Australian athletes competing in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Eva Younan wrote a letter to Australian swimmer, Georgia

Bohl and was fortunate enough to get a reply. Please read…..

Fascinated by discovering the world through someone else’s eyes? Live streaming is a continuing craze for young people. It allows them to see events unfold literally as they happen, as well as broadcast their own lives to friends (and almost anyone!) to watch. You may have heard of live streaming apps such as Periscope, Facebook Live and most recently Live.ly, which was re-leased earlier this year by Musical.ly. Live.ly is a lot like Facebook Live. When you are in the app you can tap “Go Live” to start live streaming your videos to your Musical.ly friends and fans. People can leave comments and buy digital gifts, which are animated stickers that pop onto the screen during broadcasts. Just like every other live streaming app, Live.ly presents challenges around the content that is viewed or posted. There is no filter or monitoring, and as the streams are live there is always the chance that young people may hear bad language and see inappropriate content. Another big challenge is privacy. We all need to be aware of what we are posting online, and broadcasting live is no differ-ent. It's important that before you or your child broadcasts something live, you consider what personal information you may be sharing in the video - sometimes without even meaning to!

Time2Talk • Why not download the app? Go ‘live’ and see what it’s all about. • Before streaming check your sur-roundings to ensure you’re not giving away any personal information. • Always think before go ‘live’!

ThinkUKnowTop Tips: 1. Discuss with your children what is and isn't appropriate to share. Why not broadcast something live together so they get an idea of what is appropriate. This is also a great way to get to know the technology. 2. Ensure your child is not giving away person-al information in videos, but also on their pro-file. It is especially important to make sure names, ages and location are hidden. 3. Ensure you or your child aren't inadvertently giving out information about who you are and where you live in the videos. Can a street ad-dress or school uniform be seen in the videos? Always check! 4. Remember, always think before you go 'live'! I know those tips sound a little serious, so let's not forget the fun side of live video. Have a go! It's lots of fun.
