OFFICIAL

Dr. Edward Meier:

Ed was one of the original volleyball officials in New Jersey from the game’s beginning in the early 1970s to where it is today. Ed was the go-to official during that period of his career and officiated numerous Bergen County Tournament Final matches. Under the leadership of Volleyball Legend Doris Grassini, Ed was equally in demand when it came to State Tournament Finals. Ed served on the Executive Committee of the Northeast Chapter # 2 Volleyball Officials Association and served as its President from 1982-84.

Ed continues to serve the young people as a guidance counselor at Cliffside Park High School in Cliffside Park, New Jersey. Previously, he was a Social Studies teacher at the school as well as a teacher of the handicapped.

In addition to his volleyball accolades, Ed Meier served as the Ivy League's Coordinator of Women's Basketball Officials from 1990 to 2014. A 30-year veteran basketball referee, Meier has officiated on the high school, college, international pro level. Meier has a wealth of professional experience. He has officiated NBA games, training camps, and invitationals, as well as the CBA, Eastern League, USBL, ABL and Women's Pro League. Meier was a 20-year veteran of the Jersey Summer Pro League, serving from 1980-2000.

On the college level, Meier has worked with many Division 1 conferences. He has officiated games in the ECAC, MAAC, Northeast Conference, A-10, America East and the Patriot League. Meier has also worked four NCAA Division III Championships and one Division I Championship. He was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Official of the Year in 1997. Despite all of his obligations, Meier takes time out of his schedule to serve as a professional magician, with over 250 charity appearances under his belt. After a hiatus from volleyball officiating he has rejoined the NE #2 and is back providing excellent service to the volleyball community. Ed is the proud parent of the beautiful Madison.

Jack Tsikitas

Jack began his involvement in volleyball as a player in 1976 though his work place recreational leagues. He then began officiating on the high school even before there were organized programs in South Jersey. In 1993, volleyball was brought into the Olympic Conference and that brought the birth of the NJVBOA - South. Jack was a charter member of that organization and served as the first Recording Secretary on the Executive Board. He later held the office of Vice-President and has returned to serve as the current Recording Secretary. He was also a member of the Central Jersey Volleyball Association.

Jack has officiated for 25 years and has been assigned to many of the top championship matches. He has worked numerous state tournament matches including many State Final and Tournament of Champion matches. He was awarded the "Volleyball Official of the Year ". He continues to be a sought after official and travels throughout the state working competitive tournaments.

Jack has been married for 39 years to his BFF Mary-Jo and has three great adult offspring (Irene, Marisa and Paul) and two fantastic grandchildren (Annemarie Josephine and August Xavier Lin). He is a retired Electrical Engineer from RCA/GE/Lockheed Martin after 35 years in their Government Missile and Surface Radar Division and loves to spend his free time with his grandchildren.

COACH

Chris Sheppard-Williamstown High School

Chris Sheppard, a graduate of Williamstown and Rowan University was the first, and remains, the only head coach that Williamstown Girls Volleyball has ever known. Starting with the program in 1998, in the Olympic Conference, his current record stands at 412 wins with 112 losses. Over the past 20 years, his teams have won 15 Olympic Conference titles (2001 through 2015), one Group III sectional championship in 2006 and three Group IV sectional championships (2010, 2012, 2015), and three State Championships (Group III in 2006, Group IV in 2010 and 2012). That translates to three appearances in the Tournament of Champions.

Totally committed to the program, Chris maintains contact with his past players and their families via text messages, providing them with updates on their current season and successes. He has coached some of the most successful players in the state of New Jersey, including Christina (Nina) Camaioni who was inducted as a Legend in 2015. Chris has also served as the first boys’ volleyball coach at Williamstown, a position he left in 2010 after 12 years.

Coach Sheppard is a physical education teacher at Williamstown Middle School and serves as a member of the NJSIAA seeding committee for the girls’ volleyball tournament. He states that he shares his success with long-time assistant coach and former player, Rob Cooper, who has been with him for the past 12 years. He also credits his parents, Bruce and Judy Sheppard, as well as his lovely wife, Melissa for their contributions in making him the coach he is today.

Helen Antzoulides- Paterson Catholic and Rutherford High Schools

Helen Antzoulides, a graduate of Elizabeth High School and Kean College, began her coaching career at Paterson Catholic High School. Her team there won the BPSL League Championships in 2002. But it was when she moved to Rutherford High School that her star really began to shine. As both the softball and volleyball head coach, her teams found success and numerous championships and honors. Rutherford Volleyball won two championships in the former BPSL-American, and when the leagues re-organized into the NJIC, her teams won five league championships and advanced in the State Championships winning the Group I sectional championship in 2013. With nearly 300 career wins, a winning percentage of nearly 70% at Rutherford, her teams continue to strive for success, including this year’s team which was seeded third in the Group I pairings.

Personally, she has been honored with the NJSIAA Volleyball Sport Award in 2011, The Bergen County Coach of the Year in 2013, and was a NJSCA Hall of Fame inductee in 2014. She serves as a member of the NJSIAA Volleyball Sport and Seeding committees. She continues her work as an educator at Rutherford High School where she is highly regarded by her teaching peers. Those feelings are equally shared by her coaching peers, officials, players and fans. She recognizes that through athletics, the

students in her care can and have learned valuable life lessons. She is a caring and compassionate individual who continues to demonstrate her respect for the game of volleyball.

PLAYER-

Ariel Scott- Immaculate Heart Academy

Ariel Scott is simply one of the most dominant volleyball players to come out of New Jersey. A four-year letter winner and captain of the Blue Eagles for two years, she led IHA to four straight Big North League Championships. In addition, her team captured the 2009 Bergen County Championships and earned three consecutive Non Public State Championships and three consecutive Tournament of Champions trophies. During that period, she was recognized with the Most Valuable Player Award for the NJSIAA Finals and Tournament of Champions. Ariel also lettered for the successful basketball and track programs at IHA.

Not surprisingly, she was named to numerous All-Star teams including First Team, All Big North for three years, First Team, All Bergen County for two years and was an All State Honoree. At the conclusion of her senior year, she was named as the Gatorade Player of the Year, Under Armour All American, and Star Ledger Volleyball Player of the Year.

Ariel continued her volleyball career at Penn State where the awards and accolades continued; NCAA Championship MVPs, All American, Big 10 Player of the Year and NCAA Division 1 appearances each year she was there, and captured two National Championships.

Ariel is the daughter of Dr. David and Alisa Scott and has a brother Brandon and a sister Raquel, also an accomplished volleyball player at Immaculate Heart Academy.

Janet Snell- Bogota High School

Janet Snell is one the most outstanding players in the recent annals of North Jersey Volleyball with her success as an outside hitter at Group I, Bogota High School. She was a four-year starter, graduating in 2008. She recorded a career total of 1224 kills and during her senior year received Player of the Year laurels from The Record. As a junior, she led Bogota as they captured the Group 1 state championship and she finished the season with 396 kills and 184 digs. She was honored with a First-Team All-State (All Groups) selection by the Star-Ledger following her senior season. Janet was named Honorable Mention All-American to cap off her scholastic career. She was also named to BCSL All League for three consecutive years and First Team All- Bergen County Teams for her junior and senior campaigns.

After her scholastic career she continued her volleyball success as a player at New Jersey Institute of Technology. As a freshman, she appeared in 22 matches (4 starts) and saw regular playing time on a senior-laden team. Her playing time continued to increase and she started all

matches from that point on. She completed four years of collegiate volleyball. Janet is one of the best outside hitters to come out of Bergen County and North Jersey. After graduating from NJIT in 2013 she started her professional career and currently serves as a member of the management team for Avalon Bay Communities in Jersey City. Janet is the daughter of Frank and Cheryl Snell, the youngest of seven siblings, and is engaged to be married to her fiancé, Tripp Davis, this coming January.

By Brian Bobal | For NJ Advance Media - November 11, 2017 WAYNE -- Sometimes losing in a big game can be a blessing in disguise. Verona had a year to dwell on its loss to Bogota in the Group 1 final and that experience paid dividends this time around. Behind 19 kills from Hunter Coppola and key kills down the stretch from Brooke Cooney, the top-seeded Hillbillies knocked off second-seeded Bogota, 20-25, 25-21, 25-18, to capture the NJSIAA/Wilson Sporting Goods Group 1 title Saturday at William Paterson University. “I don’t think any of us ever thought this was going to happen,” Cooney said. “Two years ago when we started playing we weren’t even ranked in the state. Now that we’re here it’s just really incredible. I’m at a loss for words.” Things did not start out as planned for Steifbold’s team, however. In a first set that featured six lead changes and 10 tied scores, Bogota gained the upper hand and won the first set by five points. It snapped a streak of 53 consecutive set wins dating back to Sept. 13. “I said take a deep breath,” said Stiefbold on what he told his team between sets. “It’s only one set. We won 53 in a row, we only need two in a row, let’s go get two and we got them.” With five kills in the first set, Bogota did a great job of blocking Coppola, but that all changed starting in the second set. “Last year we learned that they can block,” Coppola said. “They have very good blockers and their defenders are amazing. They touch everything, very scrappy, so we knew we had to keep it away.” Coppola helped lead the charge in the second set and put down eight more kills as her team rode a strong start all the way to a four-point win. “Hunter has been great for us all year,” Stiefbold said. “She hasn’t been blocked much, she’s hitting over a .500 hitting percentage on the season. I told her you’re going to get dug a little bit, just keep swinging and finding your angles.” Verona grabbed a 4-3 lead in that second set, never letting it go, and that momentum carries into the final set. Coppola and Carly Waterman each got timely kills and blocks until Cooney turned it on and put the match to rest. “It felt so good,” Cooney said. “I started off the game a little bit weak, I wasn’t really on my game. I think something just flipped during the third set and I just knew I needed to get it together if we really wanted to win.” Waterman finished the game with eight kills and 12 digs but her biggest contribution was with the serve. She led Verona on several lengthy runs that helped turn the tide of the match. Madisyn Matthews also had a big game with 26 assists. Cameron Fuentez helped lead the defense in trying to slow down Nylene Mateo and Leila Ksiyer. The senior racked up 20 digs and four other players had at least 10. “Just have to put a lot of time in club,” Bogota coach Brad DiRupo said.“We’ll use this experience in the finals. It’s tough because it’s a differentenvironment. We’ll draw off the experience just like they drew off the experiencelast year losing to us. They were better for that. It makes a difference.”

By Jason Bernstein | For NJ Advance Media - November 11, 2017 WAYNE - River Dell enjoyed a storybook 2016 season, only to see it end in a heartbreaking three-set lost in the state final. Twelve months later, the Hawks got the redemption they've been seeking ever since. Combining a versatile offensive attack led by Samantha Grandich, Emma Plutnicki and Makayla Serrett, as well as a resilient defense, second-seeded River Dell, No. 6 in the NJ.com Top 20, defeated top-seeded and No. 3 Demarest, 25-14, 25-23 in the NJSIAA/Wilson Sporting Goods Group 2 final at William Paterson University. It is the third Group 2 crown in four years for River Dell (23-1). Demarest (23-2), which was seeking its first state title since 2014, has fallen to River Dell in the Group 2 final twice in the last three years. "I thought we deserved it last year and this year, everyone worked extremely hard to get it back," said Grandich, a four-year starter, recalling the disappointment of last year's loss to Ramapo in the final. "We beat Ramapo a couple of days ago and we really thought we had it in us to win today. This means a lot. I've been looking forward to this day for quite some time." River Dell celebrates after winning Group 2 for third time in four years. After getting its revenge on Ramapo in the form of a two-set victory in Wednesday's sectional final, River Dell came out strong in Saturday's final, using an 11-4 run to open up a 15-8 advantage. Grandich had three kills in the stretch, but it was the combination of juniors Plutnicki and and Serrett in the middle, which wreaked havoc throughout the match. Plutnicki, who splits time as a setter and middle block, had 19 assists assists, five of them going to Serrett. "I think the fact that we have so many options creates space on the court. I try to establish my middles so that the block goes in different directions and leaves more room (for others). Having a lot of options helped us win today," said Plutnicki, an Ohio State commit, who also had two kills, two blocks and five digs. "Me and (Makayala) are best friends on and off the court. We have a really great chemistry together and we play club together, so we're always working together." "They're very versatile players and they can do a lot," said Grandich, who had 10 kills and eight digs despite battling illness. "They're very good at blocking and hitting exactly where it needs to go." After struggling with unforced errors in the first set, Demarest's offense got going behind Ellen Hamlin, Ohr Yahalomi and Sedona Gaard in the second, building up a 20-16 advantage. River Dell fought back as consecutive kills from Grandich and Logan Grebla and the serving of Sofia Poznansky ignited ignited a 7-1 Hawks run, which culminated in another state championship. "It's all we've been focused on, it's all I've been focused on," Serrett said. "We all wanted to come back here and get that win."

By Brian Bobal | For NJ Advance Media - November 11, 2017 Experience and depth has paid off in a big way all season long for Old Tappan -- and Saturday was no different. Alexandra Trouilloud put down 10 kills to help power the top-seeded Golden Knights to their third consecutive NJSIAA/Wilson Sporting Goods Group 3 title after a hard-fought 25-19, 25-20 win over third-seeded Wayne Valley at William Paterson University in Wayne. “In this environment, it can be very nerve-wracking and your adrenaline can get the best of you,” said Old Tappan coach Melissa Landeck. “I thought we did a really good job of staying in the moment and working on each point, not getting too ahead of ourselves or down on ourselves if there was a mistake. I liked our composure today.” The Golden Knights have been a team dealing with adversity all season. Injuries and a few tough losses could’ve derailed this team, but it has been able to stay afloat because of its depth and defense. “This team is real special because they’ve had to play through a lot of adversity,” Landeck said. “In years past, we might’ve had one or two go-to hitters that we can just rely on. I really have to turn it back to my defense. Our passing and our serving are as much of the reason why we’re here as any and that flies under the radar.” “It’s good to have a lot of options like we do on this team because you never know when someone is going to get hurt,” Trouilloud said. “I think we’re so happy that we can bounce back from it without too much trouble.” Trouilloud’s 10 kills were a team-high and Gianna Fasano did a great job of adding offense with six digs of her own. “Alex is consistent, very smart,” Landeck said of Trouilloud. “She knows when to take the big swing, she knows when to take a finesse shot. She plays a very smart game.” Camryn Monfried was another strong hitter all game, and the junior finished the match with five kills and seven digs. “Camryn is just a kid who started playing volleyball a little later and is just getting better and better as time goes on,” Landeck said. “Last year was her first year with varsity and played three rotations. This year she’s playing six. We’ve asked more of her and she’s still coming into her own.” Kelly Chen and Chrissy Chu worked well once again as a duo and finished the match with 12 and 11 assists, respectively. The win keeps Old Tappan’s hopes of a three-peat in the Tournament of Champions alive. “We’ve been working really hard all season despite all of our injuries,” Monfried said. “I’m just so happy we won. We worked so hard on and off the court and I couldn’t be prouder of my team.” The loss snaps a 20-match winning streak for Wayne Valley. DeVoe added 11 assists in her final match. Emily Gonzalez put in a strong effort defensively with 13 digs. Gina Ziegler added nine digs.

By Jason Bernstein | For NJ Advance Media - November 11, 2017 WAYNE - Back in August, when members of the Ridge girls volleyball team discussed their goals for this season, they centered around competing for a Somerset County title and having a good showing in the state playoffs. Winning a Group 4 championship was not something they envisioned. Twenty six matches later, this self-professed team without superstars can call can its state champions. Using strength in numbers on offense and clutch serving late from Rachel Tam, top-seeded Ridge, No. 7 in the NJ.com Top 20, is state champs for the first time in program history after defeating second-seeded and No. 14 Cherokee, 25-19, 25-20 in the NJSIAA/Wilson Sporting Goods Group 4 final at William Paterson. Ridge (26-0), went 10-11 last year and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Cherokee (28-1) was seeking its first ever state title. "At the beginning of the year, the goal was to win counties, to do well in states. And as we kept doing better and better, we kind of upped those goals," Ridge head coach Joanne Milot said. "We were like, we can advance into states, we can do really well. And they wanted to go for a championship this year. "We knew we were going to be good. Did we say 'oh, we're going to go for a state championship at the beginning of the year?' No. That developed though. As we got better and better we said okay, this could be a goal for us." Like it had been so many times this year, Ridge's success was predicated on its depth of offensive options. When Ridge fell behind 11-5 in the second set, it followed with a 15-3 run, which featured kills from five different players. "We have so many offensive weapons and I think that makes it so difficult for teams who play us," said Tam, who had 15 digs. "If one person's having an off game, we just go to the next person and the next person. We have an endless amount of people on the bench and on the court who really deliver for us offensively." Tm delivered the most damaging contribution of the run when she reeled off three consecutive aces to make it 20-14. "I was just thinking about getting it in bounds at that point. It was a really tight game when I started serving and I knew we needed a burst of energy at that exact moment," said Tam. I thought the best way to do that was by putting a tough serve in a tough spot. I'm really glad that I could deliver for my team." Two Kayleigh Kitchen kills and Brooke Strauss block helped cut the Cherokee deficit to 22-20, but Ridge's depth was once again a factor as kills from Peyton Robb and Evelina Adamczyk closed the match out. Chelsea Winegar led Ridge with five kills. Adamczyk and Isabela Garcia had four each, with Rob adding three as Zoe Pan contributed 14 assists and 10 digs. "That is our strength. We're really not weak (at any spot)," Milot said "Honestly, we don't have a superstar that's going to go out there and dominate the game. But no matter who's up front hitting, we've got hitters up front. Often times on a team there's a weak spot that you (can go after). There's no one on this team (like that) and I think that's hard to defend." Kitchen paced Cherokee with nine kills and seven digs. Makenzie Jackson had six kills, while Alexis Bickett and Amber Conley added eight digs apiece.

By Brian Bobal | For NJ Advance Media - November 11, 2017 WAYNE - - There was just something about the number 11 for Immaculate Heart. Thanks to another textbook team performance, the Blue Eagles used an 11-point win in the final set to capture its 11th consecutive Non-Public title on the 11th day of the 11th month with a 25-1, 25-14 win over third-seeded Hudson Catholic at William Paterson University. “It’s our 11th consecutive on (Nov. 11) so it’s been in our heads that we have to do it,” said Immaculate Heart coach Maria Nolan. “Of course they want to keep the legacy going for Immaculate Heart for our team, the program, the school and the alumni who have played. It’s great to keep going.” Entering the match, a key factor was going to be Immaculate Heart’s ability to slow down Alanis Alvarado and Karen Ramiu, one of the best one-two hitting punches in the state. Both entered the match with over 530 combined kills. “We were just ready to go,” said Sydney Taylor. “We knew Hudson Catholic was coming for us and we’ve read all the articles and seen everything out there. We really worked together as a team and we knew if we play our game we could win. That’s what we did.” Thanks to six blocks from Anna Morris and nine digs from Taylor, the Immaculate Heart defense held Hudson Catholic’s big hitters to a combined 15 kills. “When it came down to it, it was just game plan,” said Immaculate Heart assistant coach Ed Jedziniak. “We prepared all week, we’ve scouted them all season. Just like every team in the state we never overlooked anyone and broke it down to what we needed to do do and how we needed to do it.” Offensively it became all hands on deck as the Blue Eagles stormed to a 14-point win in the first set. Hudson Catholic showed some heart and came out strong as expected in the second set and built a 10-6 lead thanks to four aces from Alvarado. Immaculate Heart wasn’t amused and seemingly turned things around with a flick of a switch and went on a 17-3 run to build a 23-13 lead that all but put the match away. “We always try to stay calm and show the girls that it’s alright that this is happening,” Jedziniak said. “It’s just patience and understanding what’s happening and why those mistakes are happing and going to fix them.” All of Immaculate Heart’s hitters came up big in that stretch. Taylor and Catherine Fazio collected some key kills and Julia Morris kept spreading the ball around. “I think we played really well,” Julia Morris said. “We knew they were going to come out strong and we knew we needed to play our best to beat them. Everyone was really fired up. I have such an amazing group of hitters. It’s not like there’s just one that stands out, I have four or five amazing hitters.” The senior finished with 14 assists. Taylor picked up a team-high six kills while Fazio had five and Anna Morris added four. Most of the team’s focus immediately went to the road that lies ahead. Immaculate Heart is one step closer of achieving its ultimate goal. “This whole season we’ve been focused on the end goal which is to win the Tournament of Champions,” Julia Morris said. “We need to just keep going, keep pushing. We’ve been in this situation before.” For Hudson Catholic, it was a terrific season that came to an end against Immaculate Heart for the third consecutive season. Alvarado recorded eight kills and Ramiu had seven. Lauryn Hansford had 17 assists and Kaylana LeeChow led the defense with 10 digs.
