Election Bodes Republicans Well

Several aspects of the primary election indicate Bergen County Republicans have seen the light and without douM wilt regaird most of the laurels they dropped in the last general election. By j the overwhelming vote given Joseph W. Marini, and the nomination of Fredehck Koester and Nicholas Kiiiken for the Freeholder positions, Republicans definitely repudiated the leadership o f! Douglas G. Thomson, chairman of the Bergen County Republican Committee.

Thomson had seen fft. btfnre the election, to break an early promise to remain neutral in the election to assail Marini and urge his defeat. ,, '

It was just as well that Thomson did that. |t showed definitely and openly his position. If his leadership was anymore than an empty title, it would lie proved. He had urged the defeat of certain candidates. If he was followed by county Republicans, those candidates Would have been defeated.

The,election ot almost the entire list assailed liy Thomson is pronl enough his voice means little or nothing tn the rank and iile bl the party. He-had said that if those candidates wtre not defeated, he would retire from the office he Has held several years . It is tn be sincerely wished that he keeps that promise.

Uwnnson, long ago, ceased’to be a man of any value to his party.

* * *The voting itself contained agreeable indications. The fact that

Marini ra:- lar ahead of his ticket, and that Koester ran far ahead of Kuiketi and that' Ktnken barely nosed ciut Freeholder Knt:t helies the-statcfri^ftf the Marini candidates received regimented votes, that a "machine" Went to the polls and voted as directed.

Tbe results-do iiot hsfirout such a statement. Instead, thr wide difference,Hetweeh the candidates proves conclusively that Republican voters went to the polls, pencils m their hands and issues of the campaign in their minds.

They voted not as they were told, hit a* they heheved. M arinistrong popularity was borne out. Pred Koester’s wide acquaintanceship drew the votes tft him as wai expected. And Kuiken's support of the eight-pl.mk program won lor him considerable votes, as wa* expected, also.

* * *l.yndhurst voters reflected the same spirit apparent elsewhere

m the county. Marini and the group affiliated with him wen given large votes. The voting, while not heavy, was brisk enough, and was proof enough how vigorous .had been the efforts ol local workers. _ ' - :

The voting marked, too, the end of a particularly pleasant campaign. Leaders saw the futility..of their ’squahhfc* -of...past years and forgot them. There was a real unanimity of opinion among them. The majorities given one group of candidates prov ed that

So, it behoove* Republicans to watch thetr step fnwn now on. They have shown a powerful, united- front. They have showed strength enouah to win in the general ejection! '

And they have indicated, by their anions at the p,dh. they have discarded the old idea of “vote the ticket" Tor a better and wiser line, which is, “vote thr men".

FH E crowd was a long time drifting into-Passaic Stadium last Sunday ds the Columbus Qub prepared to cross bats with

.w jhe Holy Rosary nine. In fact, when the crowd had finally drift' pd in and arranged itself along fhe warped planks of the stadium

- feats there was still considerable room left. . . .So Billy Burns, the man with the iron derby, ei/.missioner,

(»f the old Tri-County League, shook a mournful head and said, “isn’t like the league days* eh? Nothing quite like a league, eh?"

Bart Gorman happened tp he closest to Mr. Bums and it was Mr. Gorman’s duty to answer. Mr. Gorman once was connected

. with the Yoqng Men's League (of tender memory) and had . played under the jurisdiction of Mr. Burns. He said: “No.

■ Nothing quite like a league.”It may have been pure kindness on Mr. Gorman’s part.,There

may have been in his heart a warmness for Mr. Burns quite as warm as the May sun that shone overhead. Maybe, that was

why Mr. ,answered thus. W e have no wayof knowingbecause whilir there arc plenty of ways of finding out whether a man hav a number of dollars we know none that will decide whether, he has a warm heart.

, But a question had been as^ed and a.quehwa had been answered. It was a question to ponder and the

, man to do the pondering best of all would he a man-' plwse heart was rteither uxrnn nor cold, but merely'.]aIwe dud pumping so that he would need to answer a.s

fu tm o f leagues and we have come out against leagues. fhcre is sontthing to be said on both sides of the question.

Using the game Sunday as an example; when the Columbus Club g<»t two runs in the second inning skirmish, there seemed to be -nothing to it. There had been no nits, some errors and two-runs. Mileski. was working easily, there was naught but confidence jn the Columbus Club camp. »,

So the thought: suppose they were in a league? Would there ever, after this game, be interest in another Columbus Club, Holy Rosary meeting? From the depths nf our clear., cold comctoicc tame the answer. Ho", :
