ABOUT WILDSIDESince 1993, Wildside Nature Tours has been offering quality worldwide wildlife adventures. Our dedicated, enthusiastic leaders are as excited about your trip as you! We have done extensive ‘hands on’ research into many different areas of the regions we visit, in order to offer you the best opportunity and safest experience for birding, photography and nature exploration.

Our groups are small, typically about ten people. Group size varies from trip to trip—our Galápagos tour maximum is just 14 while the Alaska cruise is only 6. Most larger groups have two leaders to keep the client to guide ratio low. Expect a truly personal experience with minimum impact on our environment!

We choose our accommodations wisely, preferring to stay close to the wildlife. We use locally owned and operated “green” accommodations wherever possible, many of which are part of environmental organizations or sanctuaries.

Tour prices are per person, based on double occupancy and include the following unless otherwise noted in itinerary: •Alltripmaterials,custombird/wildlifechecklist,packingchecklist,detailed

daily itinerary, recommended reading list and much more •Allservicesoftheleadersandguides •Allaccommodationsduringtourdates •Alltransportationuponarrivalindestinationcity •Allentrancefeestosanctuaries, parksandothersites •Allmealsareincludedonmosttours, typicallyfrombreakfastonthefirstfull

Tour prices do not include the following unless otherwise noted in each trip itinerary: Rount-trip airfare, passport/visa fees, departure taxes, immunizations, baggage fees, optional excursions, single supplement fees, telephone calls, alcoholic beverages, laundry, room service, souvenirs, and anything of a purely personal nature. Be sure to review individual itineraries for all details. Itineraries are available on our website or may be obtained by calling our office.

ENviRONMENTAL EdUCATiONWildside supports many local educational and environmental protection efforts worldwide, financially or otherwise. We encourage participants to bring asmalldonationofeducationalsupplies, binocularsorfieldguidestobegiventoschools, novice guides and sanctuaries, as appropriate.

KidS iN NATUREOur leaders created the PA Young Birders Club because we enjoy working with children. Many Wildside trips are appropriate for kids age 12 and older with an interest in nature, learning and new experiences. Parents must be responsible for their child’s behavior at all times, with no group disruptions.

Kevin began birding and photographing nature at the early age of six. By age ten, he had explored 48 US states and 7 Canadian provinces with his family. His passion for travel, birds and photography, along with a desire to share his experiences, led him to create Wildside Nature Tours in 1993. His zeal for sharing adventure comes through on every trip.

ALASKA

ALASKA’S iNSidE pASSAgE SMALL Ship CRUiSE

Whales, bears and birds abound where mountains meet the sea! Surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, which covers most of Southeast Alaska, our nation’s largest national forest is also the most extensive remaining temperate rainforest in the Northern Hemisphere.Throughoutourtravelswe’llfinduniqueopportunitiesto view eagles, bears, whales, and the breathtaking vistas.

The grand scale of Alaska can be overwhelming and is often enjoyed most through its details. Though frequently obscured by a veil of mist, color is everywhere. Tide pools rich with purple sea stars and red anemones sit below majestic Sitka Spruce, 400 years old and covered in soft green Old Man’s Beard lichens, that stand tall against a backdrop of glacier-scared mountains. Life is everywhere.

The cold waters are rich and teeming... the shoreline and old-growth forests lush. The Tlinkets have no word in their language for “starvation.” They have a saying, “When the tide is out, the table is set.” Our table is set as well, for fun, for adventure and for discovery. Look within... look around. Breathe the cool, crisp air. Listen to the sounds of rain on the water, waves on the shore and a not so distant Humpback whale as it takes a breath...

With chests puffed enormously and their long tail feathers spiked straight up, the proud Sage Grouse struts in remarkable display, giving everything they’ve got to out compete rival males and attract a female’s attention. This fascinating spring mating ritual is the focus of our special trip to Colorado. Our visit is timed to witness the peculiar courtship behavior of Greater Prairie-Chicken, Lesser Prairie-Chicken, Great Sage Grouse, Gunnison Sage Grouse and Sharp-tailed Grouse on their display grounds or “leks.”

This ultimate chicken odyssey also includes searching for Dusky Grouse, Scaled and Gambel’s Quail, Bobwhite and the introduced Chukar. Above the treeline, amidst snow-blown peaks, we’ll look for the elusive White-tailed Ptarmigan, perfectly camouflaged against the white-blanketed terrain, which will require our best efforts to locate!

“Adrian, I just wanted to thank you again for being such a great trip leader. I really appreciated everything you did for us and how organized you always were! It was a wonderful trip in every way and I’ll not soon forget the great time we had together.” — Linda B, WA

South Florida is home to a number of species found nowhere else in North America, including Mangrove Cuckoo, Black-whiskered Vireo, Short-tailed Hawk, Shiny Cowbird, Smooth-billed Ani, Snail Kite and Florida Scrub-Jay. We’ll also see the Miami “exotics” such as Spot-breasted Oriole, Red-whiskered Bulbul, Hill and Common Myna, Yellow-chevroned and White-winged Parakeet.

dryTOrTugaS

We’ll visit the Dry Tortugas National Park and historic Fort Jefferson, located 70 miles west of Key West, Florida at the height of spring migration. These seven tropical islands are home to a seabird colonyofthousandsofSootyTernandBrownNoddies,MagnificentFrigatebirds, Masked Boobies and Brown Pelicans.

Highlights of the trip include possible large numbers of passerines and other migrants that use these islands as a stopover point on their journey to the mainland, as well as the possibility of a visitor from the Caribbean. Close-up views of warblers, tanagers, vireos, nightjars, shorebirds and other passerines make for an exciting three days of birding. Snorkeling and sightseeing of historic Fort Jefferson add to the many activities that make up a Dry Tortugas experience.

WHAT’S IN A NAME: BOOBYFour species of boobies are found within US waters: Masked, Blue-footed, Red-footed and Brown, which has yellow feet.

Booby comes from the Spanish word “bobo” meaning stupid. While nesting, boobies were considered stupid or “boobies” for their awkwardness, as well as their lack of fear. The scientific name Sula comes from Icelandic for foolish or awkward person.

Every spring a variety of tropical birds make their way from the South and Central American continents, across the Gulf of Mexico, and into North America. A majority of these species nest in the northern states and Canada. They migrate at night and land in time for sunrise and immediately look for food to build their energy stores. In places like Cape May, NJ, and eastern PA along the Delaware River and in northern Ohio at Magee Marsh, the concentrations of warblers, thrushes, tanagers and more can be quite impressive!

A few of the expected warblers we’ll seek include: Blue-winged, Golden-winged, Black-throated Blue, Black-and-White, Northern Parula, Worm-eating, Chestnut-sided, Hooded, Prairie, Ovenbird andthethreatenedCeruleanWarbler.Weshouldalsofindmanyvireos (Blue-headed, Red-eyed and Yellow-throated), Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and thrushes such as Wood, Hermit, Swainson’s and possibly even Gray-cheeked and Bicknell’s. BIRDING TIP: USING A SCOPEWhen birding with a scope, it’s best to scan with binoculars first, before using the scope. You’ll cover more territory looking through your binocs to locate birds more quickly. To get the desired scope view, first set the scope on wide angle and pan to find the bird. Then zoom-in slowly to bring the bird closer, adjusting the focus while you do so. Keep in mind that a zoomed view is not always the best one, as this magnifies heat waves and motion, making the image less sharp.

hAWAi’i: LANd OF COLORFUL ENdEMiCS

Best known for Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii hosts a large variety of endemic birds. On this fun, exploratory adventure we will visit four main Islands: Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai. Hawaii’s degree of endemism in birds is best witnessed through the colorful Hawaiian Honeycreepers—the brilliant jewels of the native forests. Some 20 of these species of honeycreepers still remain—most are highly endangered.

Each island is home to a unique group of honeycreepers as well as other native forest bird species, and we will focus on these throughout the Islands. Smoking volcanos, thundering waterfalls, lush forests, deep canyons andthebeautifulPacificOceanroundoutanincredibletrip!

HAWAIIAN HONEYCREEPERSHawaiian honeycreepers, of the subfamily Drepanidinae, were once quite abundant in all forests throughout Hawai’i. Less than half of Hawaii’s previously 51 species of honeycreeper still exist.

The honeycreepers are threatened by recently introduced predation, competition, parasitism, degradation of habitat, and infectious disease. One of the consequences of the invasive birds is the introduction of avian malaria. The immune system of the honeycreepers had not been exposed to avian malaria since its common ancestor existed 4 to 5 million years ago. Thus, the honeycreepers had not co-evolved with the pathogen to develop resistance as those birds on the mainland did.

The beautiful I’iwi is just one endemic of many we will seek. © Kevin Loughlin

The dramatic, rocky coastline of Maine is amazing any time of year, but in June the wildflowers are coming out in full color! The southern migrants have also begun to nest and the outlying islands become home to hundreds, even thousands of breeding seabirds that can be difficult to see the rest ofthe year... including our target, the comical Atlantic Puffin. This wonderful cruise will offer wonderful photography opportunities as we explore the secluded coves full of hidden treasures. Hiking the beaches and forest trails we will discover birds and other wildlife throughout. If weather conditions permit we will include some pelagic birding with hopes of spotting whales, dolphins and seals.

Down-time will allow for photo discussion and teaching opportunities as well as exploring some computer software to expand your photographic arsenal.

NOTE: The Wanderbird may be available to enjoy in Puerto Rico, during the winter months, as an extension to our Endemic Dash. See the Puerto Rico trip description on page 18 for more info.

SNOWMOBILES IN THE PARK?Today’s snowmobile technology is the same as most cars, using 4-stroke engines, not the 2-stroke of past designs. They are clean and quiet, like your car. Strict regulations helped bring about these new technologies, though some still have concern for their impact. Consider this, last year Yellowstone received about 3.4 million visitors, even if they came 4 people to a car that would be over 800,000 cars! Only 22,000 snowmobiles were used in the park last year, less than 3% the number of cars. So come enjoy a safe, clean, quiet and exciting photo experience with us!

Spring in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an extraordinary time of the year. The wildflower bloom in the park is simply legendary and it will not take you long to realize that this is the most biological diverse ecosystem in North America! Babbling brooks, tumbling waterfalls, mountains that tower to almost 7,000 feet . . . the Smoky Mountains offer the visual explorer more than a lifetime’s worth of photographic opportunities.

This workshop will concentrate heavily on learning to master the art of photographing waterfalls and wildflowers. Wildlife enthusiasts will love this trip as well, as the park has become famous the world over with wildlife photographers for its whitetail deer, black bear, and turkeys.

With this trip you also have the option to add on our Crystal Coast of North Carolina workshop, making your adventure a tour de force of photographing one spectacularly beautiful and diverse state from the mountains to the sea!

WHAT IS HDR PHOTOGRAPHY?The HDR stands for “High Dynamic Range”—the range between the lightest and darkest areas of the image—and the idea is that they look more similar to what your eyeball sees than regular photographs.

HDR images are achieved by blending several photos with different exposures—usually at least one over-exposed and one under-exposed—to make for a more dynamic scene.

HDR photos have long been maligned as a gimmick as so many photographers create over-saturated, “Harry Potter” effect images. However, HDR can be used to make landscapes look more like our brain perceived the scene, since our eyes have a much wider dynamic range than cameras.

Learn more about HDR on any of our photo workshops!

Costa Rica has quickly become a popular birding destination. The abundance of birds and other wildlife due to the incredible habitat diversity, and its location as part of the land-bridge between North and South America, is astounding. Over 800 species of birds have been recorded within its borders.

LEADER SPOTLIGHTAs a boy growing up in Belize, Glenn Crawford would venture into the ‘bush’ and camp for days at a time,

just to be close to ‘his’ birds. He studied them intently, learning their songs and behaviors long before he knew anything about binoculars and field guides! A visitor to Crooked Tree Village was so impressed with the birding skills of this boy he met, he left his field guide and binoculars behind, giving Glenn the tools he needed to become Belize’s top birding guide. With Wildside since 1995, Glenn is a senior leader and guides throughout Central America and beyond!

Belize is one of the most environmentally conscious countries in the Americas. Thanks in part to its small population, over 60% of its 8867 square miles are protected! This has allowed the birds and other wildlife to continue to flourish. Over 600 species of birds have been recorded within its borders and along the 172 mile barrier reef!

Belize is the last Central American stronghold of the majestic Jabiru which nests in wetlands and savannahs where regional endemics like Yucatan Jay, Yucatan Flycatcher and Yellow-lored Parrot may also be found. The rare Orange-breasted Falcon and Stygian Owl prefer the Maya Mountains alongside many northern migrants. The broad-leaf rainforest holds more target species including many forest raptors and the rare and local Keel-billed Motmot.

“Our trip to Belize was a fabulous experience. Glenn has extraordinary eyes and ears and loves to show the birds to others. Our trip was great fun!” — Edie P, PA

The PAX Guest House, adds more species to our already impressive bird list. A boat ride through Caroni Swamp brings us close to scores of Scarlet Ibis coming to roost, while Red-capped Cardinals visit the feeders at the Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust. We’ll also take an excursion for the rare Trinidad Piping-guan.

FUN FACT: STEEL PAN ‘DRUM’The steel pan is a chromatically pitched percussion instrument, made from 55 gallon drums that formerly contained oil. In fact, ‘drum’ refers to the steel containers from which the pans are made.

The pan is struck by a pair of straight sticks tipped with rubber; the size and type of rubber tip is unique to the class of pan being played. Some musicians use four pansticks, holding two in each hand. This skill and performance has been shown to have grown out of Trinidad and Tobago’s early 20th century Carnival percussion groups known as Tamboo Bamboo. The pan is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago.

Spain offers some of Europe’s very best birding opportunities, from the snow capped mountains and green valleys of the Pyrenees, to the dehesa and extensive steppe of Extremadura and the wetlands of Coto Donana.

At Coto Donana, Europe’s most important coastal wetland, we’ll search for the endangered Marbled Teal and White-headed Duck. Azure-winged Magpie’s and Red-necked Nightjar are found in the steppes.

Extremadura offers Europe’s highest concentration of breeding raptors in Monfrague—including the endangered Spanish Imperial Eagle. By contrast, the rolling short grass plains hold Little and Greater Bustards, Great Spotted Cuckoo, sandgrouse and Black-eared Wheatear. In the Gredos Mountains we’ll search for Bluethroat, Ortolan Bunting and Citril Finch.

The Ebro steppes are home to elusive Dupont’s Larks, Wallcreeper, Lammergeier, Black and White-backed Woodpecker. Alpine Accentor and White-winged Snow-Finch can be found among the scenic peaks and valley of the Pyrenees.

LAKE BAiKAL: pEARL OF RUSSiA

This splendid tour brings us to central Siberia. As the vast evergreen forests of Russia’s Siberian taiga extend southward toward Mongolia, the ground rises and the terrain becomes more varied. The border between Siberian Russia and Mongolia is a natural divide, with rugged hills and mountains forming a series of wrinkles between the sprawling Russian forests to the north and rolling grasslands to the south. About midway along this border, a gigantic stone bowl nearly 400 miles long and almost 50 miles wide, Lake Baikal holds almost one quarter of all the fresh water on earth. On the merits of magnitude alone, the lake is renowned as one of the earth’s most impressive natural wonders.

What fewer people realize, however, is that Baikal’s majestic expanse is situated in a region of surpassing beauty, its forested shores surmounted by the jagged, snow-clad peaks of the Barguzin Mountains. In addition to the unparalleled beauty of the region, many gorgeous Siberian species of birds can be observed.

Imaginefindingsomeofthesegreatbirds:TaigaFlycatcher,Radde’sWarbler, Arctic Warbler, Greenish Warbler, White-throated Needletail, Siberian Blue Robin, Siberian Rubythroat and Black-faced Bunting. Maybe a Saker or Amur Falcon will fly overhead!

The Antarctic Peninsula offers the most dramatic scenery and largest variety of wildlife in Antarctica. Visitors are easily overcome by sensory overload as they experience the huge amount of icebergs, glaciers, dramatic mountains and abundant, fearless wildlife. Iceland, sitting due south of the Arctic circle, offers a unique landscapesculptedbytwoofthestrongestelementsfireandice. You will have the opportunity to photograph both extremes, from active volcanoes to icy glaciers plus hot springs, geysers, waterfalls, icebergs and stunning landscapes.

This is a sparsely populated country of only 320,000 inhabitants, the majority of whom live in the area immediately surrounding the Capital Reykjavik. Geologically, it sits on the divide between the two continental plates. Their constant motion causes the volcanic activity found throughout the island. This is a landscape photographer’s dream world, full of color, rock formations, vast open areas, and abundant waterfalls... there will certainly be no shortage of subjects!

Spring offers wonderful color as life emerges. A backdrop of snow-covered mountains, plus the golden light, offers stunning images.

Autumn offers some of the best opportunities to photograph the Aurora Borealis, the colorful phenomenon that lights up the northern night sky.

AURORA BOREALISThe aurora borealis, the Northern Lights have always fascinated mankind. The auroras occur when highly charged electrons from the solar wind interact with elements in the earth’s atmosphere. Solar winds stream away from the sun at speeds of about 1 million miles per hour. When they reach the earth, they follow the lines of magnetic force generated by the earth’s core and flow through the magnetosphere. As the electrons enter the earth’s upper atmosphere, they encounter atoms of oxygen and nitrogen. The color of the aurora depends on which atom is struck, and the altitude of the meeting.

Created from fire and ice, Iceland offers fantastic photo opportunities. © Tim Vollmer

Here is the fine print required by our insurance company!Since our programs specialize in viewing wildlife, every effort is made to plan programs where wildlife is known to exist. However, the animals we visit live wild and free and we cannot fully predict or control their migratory patterns (nor would we want to). In an attempt to locate wildlife which may have deviated from its normal pattern or in the interest of traveler comfort or safety, we may be required to make reasonable changes in itineraries. If it is necessary to change hotels, boats or other facilities, comparable accommodations will be substituted wherever possible. If such changes or fluctuations in exchange rates occur, additional costs may require the program fee to change with little or no notice. Should Wildside Tours be required to cancel a trip due to unforeseen circumstances, travelers will be refunded for their trip cost, but Wildside Tours will not be liable for accompanying expenses (such as gear purchases, airline tickets, etc.).

Terms & ConditionsWildside Tours and our cooperating agents make every effort to select reliable suppliers and contractors to provide air and other transportation, hotels, guides, and other travel related services; we do not assume responsibility, directly or indirectly, for any loss, damage or injury to property or person in connection with such services. Each traveler agrees not to hold Wildside Tours, its owners, employees, agents or representatives liable, in the absence of their own gross negligence, for any loss or injury, expense, or damage which results directly orindirectlyfromanyactoromissionofanypersonorfirmwhichistoordoesprovide goods or services in connection with the trip or with any available option. Wildside Tours and its cooperating agents shall not be liable for circumstances arising as a result of Acts of God, weather, detention, annoyance, delays and expenses arising from quarantine, strikes, theft, pilferage, force majeure, military, political or terrorist action, civil disturbances, government restrictions, failure of any means of conveyance to arrive or depart as scheduled, discrepancies or changes in transit over which they have no control. Wildside Tours reserves the right to change the program fee, dates or itinerary with little or no notice. If such changes do occur, no refunds will be made beyond those described in our cancellation policy and Wildside Tours will not be liable for expenses incurred as a result of the change (such as air ticket change fees, etc.).

Safety & Trip EnjoymentWildside Tours plans these trips in natural areas where the environment can sometimes lead to unpredictable conditions. To avoid possibly dangerous situations, both for our travelers and the animals, it is extremely important that all travelers obey the rules and regulations set forth by the Tour Leaders and/or Local Guides. We reserve the right to prohibit any traveler from continuing on a journey if, in our opinion, that traveler’s actions pose a threat to the safety of themselves, others, or to the wildlife, or if that traveler’s actions or behaviors are seriously jeopardizing the enjoyment of the trip for others. Participation in the program will require that travelers sign releases and covenants not to sue Wildside Tours or its participating agents in the absence of their own gross negligence. On advancement of a deposit, the traveler agrees to be bound by the terms and conditions set forth above.

Please NoteThe information in our brochures is prepared well in advance of departure dates. Due to the nature of the programs we provide, hotels, modes of transportation, and, in some cases, itineraries change. If this does occur, we will attempt to provide similar facilities but are not always able to do so. We hope you understand.

Cancellation & Refund PoliciesWe understand how disappointing it is for travelers in the event they are forced to cancel their adventure, especially one that they have been looking forward to for a long time. But we too plan for these adventures for quite a long period prior to departure and must continuously send non-refundable payments to hotels and suppliers of transportation. Therefore we must strictly adhere to our Cancellation & Refund Policy for all travelers.

The following are cancellation policies for our adventures:All cancellations must be made in writing. All cancellations processed before 120 days prior to departure will require a $100 cancellation fee. Some of our trips have non-refundable deposits which are listed on the tour pages. For all of our land-based trips the following policies apply:Cancellations made less than 120 days prior to departure date require a loss of 100% of the entire program fee including all extensions. For our expedition cruises, cancellations made less than 180 days prior to departure date require a loss of 50% of the entire program fee including all extensions. Less than 120 days prior to departure requires a loss of 100% of the entire program fee including extensions.
