Literacy Campaign Davi Killion Ingram, PISD Board Member, and her two daughters, show off the first community outdoor library that is open 24-hours a day, seven days a week located outside Killion’s Collision, 1230 North Link Street in Palestine. The outdoor library is a free standing bookcase with doors that keep the books safe from the elements. Inside the cabinet are books, ranging from early childhood stories to adult novels. Mrs. Ingram taught middle school English for 8 years in Austin, Plano, and Lake Jackson prior to moving back home to Palestine with her family. She began thinking of starting a different kind of library in the community during the 2015 Literacy Festi-val. She didn’t want to take away from the public library, but wanted to make books accessible to people who were unable to get to the library. Their goal is to spread literacy across Texas by putting books in the hands of people of all ages in a new kind of public library. In just a few short months book baskets have been placed inside more than 20 locations in Pales-tine, and they are now awaiting the arrival of a second outdoor library to be placed in another prominent location in town.
