Matchup: The No. 3 Bethel University Wildcats completed the best regular season in program history Saturday with a 56-7 win over Cumberland University. With the victory the Cats moved to 10-0 on the year. They finished 6-0 in the Mid-South Conference and captured the tough Bluegrass Division of the MSC to earn a berth in the 2018 NAIA Football Championship Series. The Wildcats will face No. 12 Baker University Saturday in the first round of the series. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CST) at Wildcat Stadium in McKenzie. The Baker Wildcats defeated No. 9 Evangel Saturday to clinch the Heart of America South Division Championship and earn an automatic bid to the NAIA FCS Playoffs. Baker finished 8-2 on the season. They were 4-0 in league action. The game will match the nation’s leading scoring team as Bethel averages 56.4 points per game against the third best scoring defense as Baker allows just 12.8 points per outing. The No. 3 ranking for Bethel is the highest in program history and the ten game winning streak matches the best ever. The Wildcats had a ten game winning streak in 2007. It is the first time since 2012 the Wildcats have advanced to the NAIA playoffs. It is Bethel’s fifth appearance in the FCS and second ever at home in the championship series. Bethel is 3-4 all-time in series action. Bethel is one of three MSC teams to make it to the playoffs. Reinhardt and the University of the Cumberlands are in the field along with the Wildcats. Bethel defeated four Top 25 ranked teams with wins over Reinhardt, Southeastern, Georgetown and Lindsey Wilson. Three of those were road wins with victories at Southeastern, Georgetown and Lindsey Wilson. Baker played three Top 25 squads. They suffered losses to Grand View and Benedictine and then pulled off the upset with the win over Evangel.

He remains the school’s career and single-season record holder in passing yards and touchdowns He finished his Wildcat career with 7, 045 passing yards and 77 touchdowns. Dearmon spent time after college playing in the arena and indoor football leagues as a quarterback. (Evansville Bluecats, Tennessee Valley Vipers, San Angelo Stampede Express). He began his coaching career at his alma mater in 2007, where he served as a student assistant, coaching the defensive backs as the Cats posted an 11-2 record.After Bethel, Dearmon spent three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Vigor High School in Prichard, Alabama before taking the reins of the program at B.C. Rain High School for two seasons. Dearmon won a state championship at Vigor in 2008 as his offense averaged 36 points per game.In his first year at Arkansas Tech, the Wonder Boys produced the biggest offensive turnaround in college football - including a 360% increase in rushing yards from the previous season. Tech’s offense was the second-rated offense in the GAC, racking up 36.5 points and 458.8 yards per game. His last season at Tech, Dearmon’s offense racked up 40 points per game which ranked 1st in the GAC. Dearmon had a quarterback make the all-conference team in each of his three seasons at Arkansas Tech. Dearmon’s offense was ranked in the top four in the league in three seasons in rushing offense and several other offensive categories. This past season, Dearmon’s QB, Ty Reasnor, was named a DII Academic All-American.Dearmon is also the author of the book ‘The Evolution of the RPO’ which was released in 2017. He is the 11th head coach in Bethel football history. Dearmon’s coaching staff at Bethel consists of several familiar faces along with five newcomers. Michael Jasper, Luke Roth, Chris Springer and Dustin Kincaid remained as part of Dearmon’s first staff. Five new coaches make up the unit for the 2018 staff. Kevin Wewers, Jonathan Wallace, Bradley Baines, Richard Hutchings and Morgan Cruce are also parts of the rebuild. Baker: Mike Grossner has developed one of the premier football programs across the country in his 14 seasons at Baker. He has put together 11 consecutive winning seasons and an 105--34 record in the past 11 years, including NAIA playoff appearances in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017.In his 14 seasons, Baker has posted a record of, 116-54, good for a winning percentage of .675, and his 108 wins puts him second all-time at BU, only behind program leader and College Football Hall of Famer Charlie Richard. His 108 wins is 10th amongst the list of active head coaches in the NAIA.

The Wildcats overall record is 167- 270 -8. The Cats have been to the NAIA playoffs four times in the history of the program, most recently in 2012. They are 3-4 all-time in the championship series. The game marks the second time Bethel has hosted a game in the series. They beat Mid America Nazarene 55-34 in 2007 but lost the following week on November 17 at St. Francis 30-27. It is Bethel’s fifth appearance in the FCS and second ever at home in the championship series. Bethel is 3-4 all-time in series action. Baker is located in Baldwin City, Kansas. The Wildcats compete in the Heart of America South Division Championship and earned an automatic bid to the NAIA FCS Playoffs. Baker finished 8-2 on the season. They were 4-0 in league action. This is the 17th appearance for Baker in the play-offs. They are 16-16 all-time in the series.

Southeastern came in at No. 25. •Bethel’s Sam Castronova threw three touchdowns passes against Cumberland giving him 27 on the season. The 27 is the most by any quarterback in program history in a single season. The previous mark of 25 was held by Bethel Coach Brent Dearmon in the 2003 season. Castronova had 260 passing yards in the game giving him 2, 177 yards on the year. That ranks second most in any one season and just 211 behind Dearmon who had 2, 388 in 2003. He passed former Bethel great Ronnie Jankovich who had 2, 225 passing yards in 2007. •Eight different Wildcats captured MSC Player of the Week Awards. J’Kobi Reddick, Jeremy Beaulieu, De’Ontay Tate and Sam Castronova won the award twice. Taye Davis, Jeremy Johnson, Dalton McCann, and Senturian DeReaux also won the award. •Bethel’s Castronova is the Craig Mullins MSC Bluegrass Offensive Player of the Year. The individual awards and all-conference teams are selected by a vote of the Bluegrass Division’s coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.•Bethel’s Davius Prather is the Bluegrass Offensive Freshman of the Year and his teammate David Miller is the Bluegrass Defensive Freshman of the Year. Brandon Mueller passed for 1, 251 yards and three 11 touchdown passes. Marco Aguinaga passed for 1, 203 yards and threw 11 touchdown passes. Sam Huckabee caught 58 passes to lead the Wildcats in receptions. Seven of those were for scores. •Baker’s defense had 100.5 TFL’s and 30 sacks during the season. They picked off 14 passes. Kegan Schumann led the Cats defense with 101 total tackles. The 1982 Men’s Basketball squad was inducted last year.
