GOING PLACES After accidentally moving from Los Angeles to New York accidentally in December, its been the coldest winter ever for me, and I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been coping with treats. Here’s a list of fourteen favorite spots to pig out at.

CAN’T WAIT! ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE It’s my first St. Patty’s Day in NYC, the second most Irish-American city, right behind Boston, MA, and I’m super psyched to drink green pints and dress from head to toe in all green everything.
COACHELLA Its bittersweet, I’m not going this year but I’m really excited to see all of the amazing street style and uninhibited celebrity photos that are sure to come. The line up isn’t life changing but I have to stop myself from buying that cross-country ticket + a pair of wristbands everyday. Coachella is a special place meant to be experienced in a carefree fun loving way and I can’t wait to go back!

ON NETFLIX NOW
ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW Miranda July, wrote, directed, and starred in this 2005 movie which depicts contemporary life in a very surreal, casual, and entertaining manner. The movie’s main character, Christine Jesperson (Miranda July), an eccentric, performance artist and senior citizen chauffeur, meets a recently divorced shoe salesman, Richard Swersey (John Hawkes). As their relationship develops, July introduces us to several other characters that are affected by their relationship and involved in either of their lives, creating a web of connectivity. The adolescent Swersey boys are played by the most adorable actors, Miles Thompson and Brandon Ratcliff, are both hilarious.
UNITED STATES OF TARA A twisted hybrid of tragedy and comedy, United States of Tara depicts the daily struggles of a mother and wife (Toni Collette) coping with Dissoative Identity Disorder (multiple personalities) while dealing with her relationships with her family and the world at large. Her other personalities take the form of a 50’s-style Stepford wife, Alice; T, a teenager straight out of an “Out of Control Teens” episode of Maury; womanizing, beer guzzling, motorcycle-riding, Vietnam vet, Buck; Shoshanna, Tara’s therapist; and Chicken, a 5 year-old version of Tara.

PORTLANDIA The Peabody Award winning, IFC original series stars Saturday Night Live alum, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, lead singer/guitarist of Wild Flag, making fun of the uber hipster lifestyle that exists in Portland, OR, where “the 90’s are alive” through surreal sketch comedy situations using a variety of different characters with a ton of random guest stars. Its totally worth a good, old-fashion binge viewing on a boring Friday night.
TINY FURNITURE Before Girls, there was Tiny Furniture, Lena Dunham’s South by Southwest winner for Best Narrative Feature. The film is somewhat a mirror of the noted writer/actress’ real life. In the film, Aura (Dunham) is a recent graduate from a Midwestern Liberal Arts college; she moves back home to her artist mother’s Tribeca loft and tries to get a real job with her Film Studies degree. Aura’s mother is played by Laurie Simmons, Lena’s mother and her real life sister, Grace, plays her on screen sibling.

TECHnically 2.0 Insert Clever Race-Related Title Here
A few weeks ago, an article, “And Read All Over”, written by Jamelle Bouie (@jbouie) and originally published in The Magazine, Issue 7 went viral. In the article, Bouie points out the small number of minorities in technology journalism save Southeast Asian and South Asian individuals. He goes on to say that this problem is in part due to a handful of factors; economic, African Americans and Latinos are often unable to afford an unpaid internship for an entire summer; a lack of diversity within tech networks, companies hire from within their networks which are rarely comprised of African Americans and Latinos; and finally cultural, for a lot of African Americans and Latinos, who are the first in their families to pursue a college education, it is ingrained in them to pursue traditional and reliable career paths. Bouie doesn’t throw a huge amount of blame on the tech industry, he even points out that technology is for the most part a color blind industry and he recognizes that in tech, employees are chosen based on merit. Bouie presents two major solutions for the tech journalism community, 1) have the conversation about race, have several conversations, don’t ignore the problem and 2) make a conscious effort to diversify the environment. The article started a conversation on Twitter and then several journalists took on the subject, many criticizing the response of Jason Calacanis (@jason), a noted entrepreneur and blogger.
For the sake of full disclosure, I’m basically a fan girl when it comes to Calacanis’ podcast, This Week In Start Ups, I respect his opinions on the tech industry and entrepreneurship, and I appreciate the classic rap quotes preceding each of his blog posts. I know that Calacanis is not racist and that his intentions were good when he wrote a response, “Doing The Right Things”. Calacanis approaches the subject sincerely, expressing the sadness he feels for his daughter who is half Korean and describing the overt racism his wife experiences. He finds some solitude in the fact that his daughter will be living “in the post-race world”. Calacanis says that Bouie’s position “counters everything” he’s experienced in his career, using two early writers he hired for his tech zine starting in 1995 as examples, Xeni Jardin and Rafat Ali. Calacanis describes them like this, “the first a woman, the second with much darker skin than mine (brown, but not black for those obsessed with the exact tone – really?). He then proceeds to describe his experience as an Irish guy from Brooklyn who broke into tech, knocked doors down, and created opportunity for himself. He then says that those internships no longer exist; they haven’t been around since, “’94 max”. This old school method of magazine internships has been replaced with this model for Gawker, Engadget, and TechCrunch, according to Calacanis, “a) Post highly intelligent comments – not about yourself – on those blogs 2-5x a day for three years. b) Start your own blog and write one blog post a day about one subject for three years, not about yourself, about the topic. Don’t ever talk about yourself. c) Go to any party, meetup or SIG you can find. You do these things you will break in. Two hours a day for three years.” Calacanis continues, touting tech as “the most open meritocracy…in industry” that he’s ever seen. He teasingly advises not to “let anyone tell you that some secret cabal of rich, old white guys on some secret golf course is trying to stop you.”
Calacanis’ response was ignorant of the daily reality Americans face. Honestly tech is very open, it is a meritocracy, but I can’t help but notice that whether its New York or Los Angeles, if it’s a tech event, I’m usually one of a handful of African Americans and pretty much always the only African American female, if I could code, I’d be a unicorn. Why? I’d say 99% of my African American and Latino friends and acquaintances from high school went on to college, but I can’t think of one who pursued a degree in anything tech related, a lot of Political Science, Pre-Med, and Business Management with a sprinkling of Liberal Arts and Public Administration majors. Most pursuing very safe, traditional career paths, in fitting with the expectations of their families. These aren’t impoverished kids; these are the children of college graduates, who went to private high schools and outstanding public schools, and who have participated in unpaid internships at Fortune 500 companies and prominent law firms. I have no idea why none of them have pursued tech.
My argument isn’t about right now, or even three years from now, my argument is about the kids. Kids are our future and while the smallest Calacanis and my little mixed babies will live in a post racial world (hopefully), we have to make changes now to see it through. Like Trick Daddy, I “luh da kids” and after working with a ton of kids and volunteering at many elementary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second largest in the country, I’d say school is where this all starts. Compared to the city’s many parochial and private schools, Los Angeles’ public schools are starving for technology and programs that promote technological innovation and spark interest in the minds of kids early on. I’ve often assisted in classes that only had one old school Mac DV complete with hockey puck mouse, the schools often supplement this with weekly, and hour-long computer lab visits which consist of free play on the Internet and nothing of substance and more often than not, nothing of true educational value. Alternatively, while working as an after school program counselor at a much more affluent school where teachers are called by their first names and the students have trendy names, all of the latest tech gadgets and they know how to use them efficiently. In the classroom, these students use the computer often to complete assignments, they know how to do research and find resources using the Internet. At home, their access is not hindered, for the most part, they have access to a modern, working computer, equipped with Internet. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the impoverished youth who are usually both brown and black and white, attending LAUSD Title I schools.
The problem is not one of race, this is a cultural, social, economic issue that won’t be solved by offering college students paid internships, a lack of access compounded by a cultural attitude of indifference towards math, science, and technology. So what can the tech community do? For starters, we don’t have to write a bunch of articles and blogs about there being a problem. Instead focus on creating effective, long-lasting solutions that will create real change and develop talent early on. Creating programs within schools, K-12, that are in the most impoverished areas of major tech communities, replace their Mac DVs with modern technology, donate time, develop educational programs, give them a fighting chance to compete with their peers. A three step plan isn’t going to help the kids at George Washington High in Los Angeles, CA or Teresa Hughes Elementary in South Gate, CA nor the students at Audubon Middle School in Los Angeles, CA, to name a few. These kids are under serviced, underfunded, and often overlooked. They’re not less intelligent then the students that later decide to become involved with tech, they’re just less informed and have fewer resources available to them.

SHORT SHORTS “JUSTINE IS A THIEF” BY SIMONE WYRICK
Every morning, Justine walks her dog, Jimi Costa who never seems to “go” until they get home and he reaches the kitchen. Justine drops Jimi and picks up her laptop and workbag at home and then heads out for the day. She bikes to the Starbucks on Pearl Street. She orders a grande cup of ice water por gratis and finds a table near the barista and a three prong electrical outlet, setting up her laptop and logging onto the free wifi. As Justine listened to Naima by John Coltrane, she typed quickly, periodically taking sips from her water cup and surveying the ever-changing landscape of the busy coffee shop, when she hears the barista call out, “VENTI DOUBLE AMERICANO” and two minutes later, “VENTI AMERICANO….FOR PERRY”, eventually giving up and leaving the drink on the bar top. Justine watched the drink, waiting, for Perry. Who would just abandon a $5 cup of coffee? Who does this Perry guy think he is? She waited what seemed to be the longest 5 minutes of her life and then she stood up, snapped the drink up from the bar and retreated back to her comfy, safe seat. High off of her latest victory, Justine sipped the drink feeling unusually accomplished.
Around noon, Justine pops up from her table and skips to the counter, grabbing a Panini press sandwich and a bottle of clementine-flavored Izze. She goes back to her table and unwraps the neatly packaged sandwich and untwists the cap on her drink and begins to eat her lunch. After quickly finishing, she resumes her work tapping quickly on the keys listening to “Sonnenbank Flavour” by Bushido. She works for an hour uninterrupted until she got up to refresh her water. As she walked to the counter, she heard a nasally, high pitched voice, “OMG, and did I tell you I got a paper cut today? It was really traumatic, I called my therapist and we worked through it,” the short, strawberry blond said into her rhinestone-covered cellphone complete with plastic bunny ears and a fluffy bunny tail. She put her phone conversation on hold to order her drink, “Can I have a Venti Caramel Frappacino with extra whipped cream and extra caramel sauce?”. Wow, even her drink order is annoying, thought Justine. The girl continued on her phone, “Yeah, I came to the conclusion that the
paper cut was really a reminder to pay attention, you know, like from the universe and stuff?” Justine watched as the girl walked outside and her loud conversation became muffled through the glass of the storefront. Then the barista called out, “VENTI CARAMEL FRAPPACINO with extra whip and caramel” Justine watched the annoying girl through the glass, twirling her hair around her finger, feverishly texting, and not paying any attention to anything at all around her, she looked back at the annoying drink and back at the girl, and then she jumped up to the bar and grabbed the drink. She stopped at the condiment bar and acted as if she were adding cream and sugar, discreetly tossing the drink into the trash can, looking up and around to make sure no one had seen her. Justine watched the girl talk for what seemed like forever with her headphones on and her music loud. The girl walked back in and searched for her drink, pacing around the store for a few minutes looking truly confused, until finally she approached the cashier inquiring the status of her overdue drink. The cashier is equally confused and tells the barista to make another annoying drink for the annoying girl. Justine just watched mockingly thinking, first the paper cut now my frappacino?!, laughing to herself quietly.
She continued to peek up at a variety of scenes at the coffee house, still typing, tapping on the keyboard with so much determination and focus. Justine is a thief. All of her typing, all of the keyboard tapping, all of the focus, Justine is stealing. Justine isn’t only stealing overpriced caffeinated beverages; she’s stealing money, and a lot of it. As she sat at the Starbucks from 9am to 4pm, she coded a sniffer and began to scout databases nearby to purge, this neighborhood was the perfect place. But she always made sure that she left before all of the lame financial sector workers emerged from their fortress-like high rises, she hated rush hour, she hated all of those unfamiliar people in her personal space. As she walked back to her apartment, starring up at the sky, she thought of the day, of all of the people she observed, and the work she finished. She couldn’t wait to be back in her own personal space where she could work on something more creative and beneficial to the world at large. As she approached the door to her tiny one bedroom walk up, she could hear Jimi barking excitedly. The loving terrier mix greeted her with warm, wet kisses and a cold nose on her cheeks. She took her coat off, put her keys on a hook next to the door, peeling off the rest of her clothes, balancing herself on the wooden frame of the door. She walked to the fridge, with Jimi only steps behind her trotting along, leaning down to grab a Stella for herself and a mini frank for Jimi. She walked back to the couch, plopping down, taking up its entire length, Jimi jumped onto her lap, she acted as if she were going to eat the mini frank, and then gave it to Jimi. Justine is a thief.
