A SF incubation project with thevision to provide - An open HW reference platform for Symbianand in the process
Prove that Symbian is now fully open and “anyone” can build a “device” with that.
Provide an open platform to researchers, hardware geeks, companies or anyone wanting
to experiment with the free Symbian stack

The Journey so far
Last year at SEE2009 , Symbian Foundation open sourced thekernel Package along with a minimal Beagleboard Baseport.
SF/Accenture demoed Beagleboard running Textshell :

The Journey so far
Since then it has been great progress and I feel proud to present the‘Wild -ducks kit’ , put together by the Wild ducks community.
The kit supports Symbian S^3 PDKs , QT and Telephony use cases.
Shows the power of Open source and
collaboration to the best.
Sets and example on how the community came
forward to fix one of the fundamental issues
which we all faced.

Speaking of the Wild ducks kit
The team has put together The Wild Ducks kit as astarter/development and demonstrator kit for Symbian
The kit consists of:
The very famous Beagle Board - a low-power, low-cost single-boardcomputer produced by Texas Instruments incorporating OMAP3530 SOC.
A “Beagle modem extension” - designed specifically for this
kit, incorporating a Telit UMTS module, jointly designed by Antrax and
Symbian.
A 3.6”, 262k, 800x480, TFT LCD and Touchscreen, designed by BYD.
The kit is now commercially available from Antrax.

The Wild ducks Community
6
What started with a small group of Symbian staff staying late on Tuesday nights grew into a community project with a wide base of contributors and
collaborators

Why Wild ducks
Open hardware platforms like the BeagleBoard, where the data sheet isnot a secret and the base port is available in source could fuel innovation.
It addresses one of the fundamental problems around “Open Source
Symbian” –
I have the code , now what ? Do I have a developer phone or alow cost open hardware platform ?
Have anchored and helped new entrants to the Symbian ecosystem byproviding an evaluation/experimentation platform .
Has started helping out on some of the bigger questions like SHAI -Broadcom did there first Bluetooth SHAI contribution on Wild-ducks.
Has the potential to provide a form factor device.

The Project today ...
Has a dedicated wiki with supporting documentation and detailed instructionsabout the hardware and software.
Has an active mailing list of more than 100 subscribers.
An active FCL repository with more than a dozen committers - had more than
six feature contributions in last six months.
The team now has Symbian^3 , QT and the Telephony stack working on thekit and work is in progress to enable more peripherals and use-cases.
Is in a good self sustainable state and could experience organic growth if thecommunity sees any value in it.
We also have our own blog and a twitter account.

This is just the Beginning
We believe that all what we have been doing till now provides the foundationfor further community engagement and development and we would love tosee that happening.
Things what we would like to focus on are
Enabling Graphics acceleration
Support more peripherals and devices like Ethernet , SD Card , SDIO etc.
Making it more stable and support more use cases like AV playback ,
browsing etc.

To create a good platform and to make use of hardwarefunctionality we need a proper baseport!
Some of the drivers that:
We have or we are currently working on:
UART, GPIO, I2C, SPI, tps65950, serial mouse and keyboard,
BYD LCD, BYI digitizer (touch panel), NAND, USBCC,
Monitor, bootloader..
we need – you can help by getting involved!: I2S, Sound, DMA, watchdog,
PRM (power), ethernet, USB host
MMC/SD, USB mouse, Svideo-out
Camera (if we came up with an extension board we could use)
