Wikis, Blogs, & Web Publishing
By: Tracy ShawApril 2010
Using Wikis
- A Wiki is a way for users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. School Use: • Great way for students working in groups to contribute
information on one site • Teachers can collaborate with other teachers and share
ideas without having seperate web pages
My Wiki: http://teacherconnection.wikispaces.com/ Negative: Creating a wiki can be very time consuming
RSS ( Real Simple Syndication)
• Subscribe to a web page to read new content as it is made available
• Saves time because the
news comes right to you • Easy to set up
Types of things to Subscribe to:
• wikis• blogs
• podcasts• newsfeeds
My RSS Choice:
• igoogle
Blogs
• A place to express your thoughts, feelings, or ideas in a journal like style
Educational Use:• Great way for kids to share opinions about books• Gives students a way to practice their writing skills without
just a pencil and paper• Encourages sharing and commenting on the opinions of
others

Other Web Publishing Tools
These are the ones I can't wait to try out in my classroom: • Animoto• Glogster• Xtranormal • Jog the Web

My Personal Experience
• I found the wiki page to be the most challenging to work with. I had a difficult time deciding what I wanted to create a page about. I also felt that it took a long time to arrange the page and enter the content.
• I enjoyed playing around with igoogle and think this is
something that I will use everyday. I enjoyed how I could make different tabs for both professional and personal use.
• Glogster is a fantastic way to incorporate technology into the
classroom. I feel students of all ages will enjoy making posters/projects using this tool. Not only is it fun and easy to use, it is an environmental friendly way for students to complete an assignment!
My Personal Experience Continued...
• I LOVE online learning. I enjoy being able to work at my own pace and starting and completing assignments when I am able.
• I found Moodle very easy to use. I really like how organized
everything is. I enjoy checking the forums to see what my other classmates have been working on.
